Our students received an experience of a lifetime on 1/11/2011 as they were able to witness as well as speak to our astronauts on the International Space Station. Students pre-pared questions in advance in

preparation for the conversation with the astronauts in space. The event was aired on NASA’s television as well as our district’s network. The live, in-flight educational downlink is an integral component of NASA’s educational program, Teaching From Space. Our school was one of five schools in the nation picked by NASA for the downlink. The FAA Production Studio at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport hosted the event.

January 11, 2011—A Day to Remember at CFAA/KHS

During the twenty minute downlink, ap-proximately fourteen students were able to ask questions to astronauts Paolo Nespoli, Scott Kelly and Cady Coleman. Many students at the academy have high aspirations of becoming a pilot and or engi-neer and this was a dream come true for them. In February, our students will also have the opportunity to watch from VIP seats at the Kennedy Space Center the next shuttle launch.

FFA News By Amy Klass and Nathaniel Lawson

Kathleen FFA ended 2010 with a big bang! For the holiday season, FFA members Emily Klass and Natalee Moore coordinated the annual Holiday Celebration for Sleepy Hill’s Headstart students. Our Ag-ricultural Commu-nications class set up a Christmas tree and prompted Ag students to bring in toys for extra credit in their Ag classes. With over 70 Headstart stu-dents, FFA mem-bers were able to collect enough presents plus ex-tras. The presents were wrapped and ready to go. Klass, Moore, and a team of jolly givers helped make the big day a success. Providing Christmas sweets, the children were excited for their unfor-gettable day of gifts from giving hands.

In addition to giving back to the community, FFA has continued to shine through with their competitive side. Starting in mid-November, the magnificent team of four was able to dominate the State Forestry Career Development Event. The team consisted of: Kasie Myers, Morgan Carlton, Ary Folds, and Nicole Green. Kasie Myers was deemed High Point Individual of the entire contest. Extending the chapter’s success into December, another team exhibited their hard work and dedication by winning the State Citrus Career Development Event. Team members in-cluded Jennifer Meyer, Morgan Carlton, Risa Langford, and Clayton Kiddey. Jennifer received the High Point Individual of the entire state. Con-gratulations to our outstanding teams!

FFA sustained their drive for success into the New Year. On January 20th, we competed at state, in Parliamentary Procedure, Prepared Pub-

lic Speaking, and Ag Mechanics. Nathaniel Law-son, Morgan Carlton, Patience Costine, Tyler Wil-ford, Bonnie Tyer, and Charity Bowe triumphed over the other teams in Parliamentary Procedure.

The members had to conduct a formal business meeting including germane debates, motions, and amendments; within 10 minutes. Morgan Carlton placed second place in the Prepared Pub-lic Speaking Con-test, with her speech titled “The Green-belt Law: Protecting America’s Farmers”. The Agricultural Mechanics team, Dillon Nix, Bradley

Batke, Taylor Walker, and John Harris tried their hardest and are still awaiting results.

In January Morgan Carlton, Taylor Walker, and Ms. Hall were invited to attend the Inaugura-tion of Governor Rick Scott, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam, and various other pub-lic officials. Not only did they get to see this once-in-a-lifetime event, they were able to personally meet the new Governor himself; what a tremen-dous and remarkable experience this was!

Upcoming events include the newly estab-lished “Farm Day” and the Spring BBQ. Farm Day, coordinated by the Ag Communications class, will be held on February 25th. Children from the local Headstart programs will be attending; they are expecting over 200 children. With five stations, ranging from a petting zoo to buggy rides, this day should be an eye opening experience for these children. On top of that, Kathleen FFA will be hosting their annual Spring BBQ. Come out an support our FFA chapter by purchasing some deli-cious food!

Looking for Commu-nity Service Hours? Soft-ball is looking for responsi-ble, yet funny people to an-nounce our home games and run the score board. Stop by R100 to see Coach Desandolo to sign up. Softball and Baseball teamed up for a fundraiser in February and played a 100 inning game.

Mrs. Bradner was accepted into NASA’s Endeavor Science Teaching Certificate Project.. She is piloting the Rocket Club at CFAA and wrote and won the Gammons Charitable Foundation Grant. Rocket Club students will participate in the national Reach for the Stars Rocket Competition. Based on her leadership and dedication to STEM, she has also been selected as one of the

Last month, thirty faculty members gathered for a workshop about a new approach to classroom manage-ment: Discipline Without Stress – the Raise Responsi-bility System (RRS). The workshop taught us how to use four levels of social development to help us disci-pline, or teach, our students how to succeed at school and in life. The Raise Responsibility System empowers stu-dents as opposed to overpowering them. It provides them with opportunities to reflect on their actions and to choose between alternative behaviors and consequences. It also allows our teachers to ask students about expected behav-ior, rather than tell them to stop participating in inappro-priate behaviors. Ultimately, the use of RRS in our FIRE Academy will increase the level of mutual respect be-tween teachers and students, which will in turn, lead to greater student achievement. A special thank you to our guest speakers, Dr. Richard Marshall from USF and Lori Bradner, teacher from the Central Florida Aerospace Academy of KHS. Also, thank you to our sponsors, Chick-Fil-A North Lakeland and Keiser University for their generosity and partnership.

On Wednesday, February 23rd, the Kathleen High School FIRE Academy welcomes Mr. Reggie Dabbs to our campus. Reggie talks to the kids in a humorous style about choices each of them has when faced with drugs, alcohol, suicide, etc. He gets in kids faces and tells them that he never smoked a cigarette, never did drugs, never drank alco-hol, because he chose not to. He assures them that they can make the same kinds of choices. Reggie also talks to kids about family and dating relationships. Most of all, he drives home the fact that "You can never change your past, but you can change your future!" Kathleen High School is excited to have Reggie speak to the Class of 2014!

A Message From the Fire Academy Dean

Students and parents, check out www.fcatexplorer.com This free resource is designed to help students practice reading, math, and science skills outlined in the Sunshine State Standards. Currently, FCAT Explorer offers reading programs for 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th grades, math programs for 5th, 8th, and 10th grades, and science programs for 5th, 8th, and 11th grades. Generally, usernames have the format of the student’s last name + first initial and passwords are 53 + first four letters of the last name + the month (two digits) + date (two digits) of the student’s birthday. For example, a student named Tyler Smith whose birthday is January 23 would have a user name SmithT and a password of 53smit0123.

• FCAT Explorer is available to all Florida public school children, their teachers, and their parents.

• Children can access the FCAT Explorer from computers at school or at home.

• FCAT Explorer includes a Parent and Family Guide, offering practical advice and focused activities for parents, guardians, and mentors who want to help children succeed.
