FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANTHONY……………………… A break from our Ordinary (counted) Sundays! It has been 40 days since we celebrated our Lord’s Nativity on Christmas, and now we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, commemorating the day Mary and Joseph took the Infant Jesus to the Temple to offer Him to the Lord God. The Holy Family fulfills the Law of Moses as they bring two turtledoves for sacrifice. Simeon, waiting in the Temple for his promised Encounter with the Lord, proclaims Jesus to be the “Light to the Nations.” Once again, the Church directs us to the theme of light. In the natural order, even in the midst of January barren and bleak, we notice more sunlight – more than there was even 40 days ago! We have almost a full hour more (53 minutes) of sunshine today than we had on Christmas Day. The natural directs us to the supernatural, as we once again reflect on Jesus coming into a world darkened by sin, and then triumphing over the darkness through His Death and Resurrection. Already the Church prepares us for the Easter Vigil, a true festival of light and the most important day of the year. If we think about the two great cycles in the Church Year – Easter and Christmas – we realize that “It is all about the Light!” We celebrate Advent and Christmas during the darkest days of the year; the star leads the Magi to Jesus on the Epiphany; and today, the Presentation – or Candlemas Day – we bless candles and pray: “O God, true light, who create light eternal, spreading it far and wide, pour, we pray, into the hearts of the faithful the brilliance of perpetual light, so that all who are brightened in your holy temple by the splendor of these candles may happily reach the light of your glory.” The Church’s intention always is that what we celebrate in time be a glimpse of eternity. The Lenten-Easter cycle begins as the days noticeably get longer – this year Ash Wednesday comes on February 26, when the sun will be shining almost an hour (58 minutes) more than it is today. Our word “Lent” comes from an Old English word meaning “lengthen.” The Easter Vigil begins with “The Service of Light” as we celebrate the Resurrec-tion of the True Light of the world. When the priest lights the paschal candle from the new Easter fire, he prays: “May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.” I invite you to take a pack of candles home with you today to use; may their light keep us on our way “to the feast of eternal light.” The Feast of the Presentation is also the World Day for Consecrated Life. Please pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life. Those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God’s gift of their vocation. God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as sisters, brothers, religious priests, consecrated virgins, and hermits, as well as members of Secular Institutes. Renew their knowledge and love you, and send your Holy Spirit to help them respond generously and courageously to your will. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. I am happy to report that the Mardi Gras planning is in full swing! I hope that you will plan to celebrate on Tuesday, February 25, at 6:00PM. If you would like to wear a festive outfit for the occasion, the organ-izers encourage you to do so. The committee also hopes that you will bring a covered dish to share with others. The plan presently is that the parish will provide a main dish. Looking forward to this celebration before the rigors of Lent begin. Last weekend, we welcomed students from Christ the Divine Teacher School, Latrobe, and Greens-burg Central Catholic High School as they promoted Catholic Schools Week. Sometimes we forget that the parishes subsidize heavily the schools – our assessment for Fiscal Year 2018-19 was $60,565.04. Tomorrow we celebrate the Memorial of St. Blase, Bishop and Martyr. The Church traditionally offers the sacramental of throat blessing on this day. We will bless throats at the 8:00AM Mass and then again at 7:15PM to allow for the participation of the children and catechists in the Faith Formation program. However, all are invited to receive the blessing at Mass or at Evening Prayer. A few weeks ago when I wrote in this space about moving the offices out of the rectory, some parishioners told me – in various ways – that they were concerned about the effect of this move on the financial state of the parish. The deficit for fiscal year 2018-19, $20,072.67, was mentioned. However, we need to take into consideration that $25,625.14 was added to our reserves and endowments. Had we allowed that amount to remain in our checking account, we would not have had a deficit on paper. Parish “value” actually increased by $5,552.47 from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. As you know, volunteers and staff members here in our parish are required to have clearances. Some of these clearances must be renewed every five years. Many parishioners started this process in 2015, which means that this is the year for renewal. Please take the time to renew your clearances – we will take a look at our records and help you in any way. Thanks.
