Music education program inspires students at Winnipeg schoolsSistema Winnipeg, a program

that affects social change through music, began last year

with Elwick Community School in the Seven Oaks School Division and expanded to include King Edward School in the Winnipeg School Division this year.

Sistema Winnipeg is a free, daily after-school program that inspires children to meet their full potential. Children learn how to play an instrument and experience the joy of being part of an orchestra. Designed to be fun and engaging, this program helps each child develop as a person and learn valuable skills

while growing musically.This program is inspired by the

El Sistema model from Venezuela that exploded on the orchestra scene only a few years ago. The model developed by José Antonio Abreu more than 35 years ago in Caracas has already shown tremendous success in Canada, the USA and internationally. The mission of the free El Sistema program is to promote the collective practice of music through symphony orchestras in order to help children and young people achieve their full potential and create social change in their community. As of today, more than 400,000 children and youth

participate in the program every year in Venezuela.

Sistema Winnipeg has 80 students from grades 1 to 4 participating this year. They meet every day after school from 3:30pm – 6:30pm.

2013 Acura RDXHey look, it's Acura

MDX's little brother! The Acura RDX is a

premium CUV (compact utility vehicle) with all-wheel drive and seems perfect for our winter driving conditions. I personally love the look of the RDX. It's soft sweeping lines are luxurious and elegant.

Under the hood of the RDX is a 3.5-litre V6, 273 horsepower, 251 lb-ft of torque with a 6-speed automatic transmission. RDX performance is very strong with quick acceleration and quick shifting. Add the fact that you have paddle shifters on the steering column make driving off the line that much more fun.

The sweet sounds of the V6 engine pur quite nicely while driving and having the Acura/ELS Surround 410-watt premium audio system with 10 speakers can make the trips to soccer and hockey games very enjoyable.

Just like the Honda CRV, the Acura RDX has the single lever in the back cargo area that easily folds down the 60-40 rear passenger seats to give more cargo space. This is especially

convenient as you don’t have to run each side of the vehicle to manually fold down the seats. For the hockey players out there, this is a great feature.

There have been times throughout my first year of testing and review vehicles where I wish I owned my own test track, a time machine and also a Star Trek replicator. As this is my first year,

I don’t know what it feels like to drive last year’s RDX that came with Acura’s SH-AWD (super-handling) system. I wish there were opportunities to test vehicles at the same time.

The 2013 Acura RDX now comes with a conventional all-wheel drive system. Give me my own test track that would allow for the same conditions, give me both 2012 and 2013 model year RDX vehicles and then I’d be able to really feel and experience the difference.

The Acura RDX sits in a tight and competitive class of luxury compact crossover vehicles like the BMW X3, Infiniti EX35 and the Lexus RX 350. Although not fair comparisons in the luxury class, other rival vehicles would include the less than luxurious

Mazda CX5 and the Honda CRV. The 2013 RDX tester model

Since July 2011, the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program

has been offering an online application process for their priority immigration streams. This year, all applications to Manitoba will be accessible for online processing. Individuals looking to apply to the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program should now consider online processing.

How fast is online processing?

According to statistics released by the Manitoba

Provincial Nominee Program this month, the average processing for priority stream applications (temporary foreign workers, international students and strategic initiatives) was 2.2 months. In comparison, paper applications took 3.2 months. In comparison, family stream paper applications took 7.4 months while general stream paper application took 9.5 months to process.

What are the advantages of online processing?

Since the online process was launched in July 2011, approximately 3,500 individuals

have applied online. One of the advantages of online processing is that it reduces the number of errors individuals make in applications. The reason for this is that if the online application is not completed correctly, it will not allow you to file an application. Only complete applications can be filed online and this can reduce the chances that an application would be refused or sent back because of being incomplete.

Is there any disadvantage to online processing?

One of the disadvantages of online processing is that the information required by Manitoba’s program is different than that required by Canadian visa offices abroad. Previously, when an individual filed a paper application, they could use the forms they filled out by paper for the application that eventually had to be sent to the visa office.

However, there have been many recent changes in immigration forms over the last few months and more changes may be coming as Citizenship and Immigration Canada begins new immigration programs. As a result, the advantage in doing paper processing is quickly going away.

What if I want legal advice before submitting my application?

The online application system allows for individuals to hire lawyers and immigration consultants to provide them with legal advice before submitting an application. In a number of cases, this may be useful with new laws that may soon be coming that could result in false statements to immigration resulting in a 5 year bar from re-applying to Canada for any immigration purpose.

Like paper applications, lawyers can prepare or review online applications before submission. Lawyers and consultants can also submit applications for their clients if this is what the client desires.

PCG still to determine actual damage to Tubbataha

The Philippine Coast Guard revealed that the extent of damage on Tubbataha Reef

caused by a US Navy minesweeper could only be determined when the salvaging operations on the ship are completed and the vessel is removed from the area.

PCG spokesman Commander Armand Balilo said they are not discounting the possibility that the damage on the coral reefs maybe more than the Task Force’s initial assessment of 1,000 square meters

The 68-meter USS Guardian has been stuck in Tubbataha Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, since January 17 after it ran aground in the area.

The US Navy (USN) is still waiting for the arrival of two crane ships from Singapore that will be used for salvaging operations. The USN is said to be looking at another option that will involve dismantling or breaking up the ship in place.

Rear Admiral Thomas Carney, the on-scene commander of the salvage operations, said USN Naval architects and salvage engineers are working together to develop salvage plans. He added that the option to tow the ship off the reef is not possible since the ship is already badly damaged.

Catholic Church has forgiven Celdran for his stunt

The Catholic Church has long forgiven Carlos Celdran for holding a

protest action in the middle of an ecumenical service at the Manila Cathedral on Sept. 30, 2010.

However, Rector Monsignor Nestor Cerbo said Celdran, a

tour guide and reproductive health activist, must face the consequences of his actions.

Celdran was sentenced by Manila City Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 4 Judge Juan Bermejo to a prison term ranging

from two months and 21 days up to 13 months and 11 days after finding him guilty of violating Article 133, Section 4 of the Revised Penal Code (RPC).

During his protest action at the Cathedral, Celdran raised a

placard with the word “Damaso” when he reached the altar. The name refers to Padre Damaso, the abusive friar in Jose Rizal's “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.”

Cerbo said that the court decision has rendered justice to the Church as a House of God and

a place of faith. The priest added that just like making a confession, God forgives the sins of the faithful but they must still bear the penalties for their misdeeds.

For his part, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, president of Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said he respects the High Court's ruling on the Celdran case.

U.S. band The Ocean Blue set to release sixth album

Ultramarine—what a very apt album title for the name of the band! This is another new release in the genre that many people have long declared dead. Yes, The U.S. band The Ocean Blue is set to release their sixth full-length studio album in March 2013.

The 2010s has really been good for the New Wave genre, as we have seen new albums by classic bands like The Fixx (Beautiful Friction, 2012), Men Without Hats (Love in the Age of War, 2012), Translator (Big Green Lawn, 2012), The Wild Swans (The Coldest Winter for a Hundred Years, 2011), Dexys Midnight Runners (One Day I'm Going to Soar, 2012), Killing Joke (Absolute Dissent, 2010; and MMXII, 2012), Pet Shop Boys (Elysium, 2012), Duran Duran (All We Need Is Now, 2010), and this year The Ocean Blue (Ultramarine), David Bowie (The Next Day), Depeche Mode (Delta Machine), and OMD (English Electric).

And I'm sure I am missing some more albums released starting 2010, and some more coming in the remaining years of the current decade.

The Ocean Blue is a U.S. New Wave band formed in Pennsylvania in 1986. Its music is best defined by jangly and folky plucked guitars,

hint of synth sounds and breezy saxophone melodies, trebly melodic bass lines, simple drumbeats, and smooth and silky vocals. Its current lineup consists of David Schelzel on lead vocals/guitar, Oed Ronne on keyboards/guitar/vocals, Bobby Mittan on bass guitar, and Peter Anderson on drums. Not counting the forthcoming album, Ultramarine, the band has released five studio albums: The Ocean Blue (1989), Cerulean (1991), Beneath

the Rhythm and Sound (1993), See (1996), and Davy Jones’ Locker (1999). Recommended songs include “Between Something and Nothing,” “Drifting, Falling,” “Ask Me, Jon,” “Marigold,” “Ballerina Out of Control,” “Sublime,” “Don’t Believe in Everything You Hear,” “Cathedral Bells,” “Slide,” “Denmark,” and “Do You Still Remember Me?” Members of the band cite as major influences pioneering New Wave / Postpunk bands such as The Smiths, Aztec Camera, and Echo & the Bunnymen.

Two songs off Ultramarine, “Blow My Mind” and “A Rose Is a Rose,” prove that the sound of The Ocean Blue is as New Wave as it has always been.

Final NoteThe Ocean Blue is just one of

the classic New Wave bands that have reinvigorated both old and new fans by releasing in the current decade new albums of new materials which bear the same familiar trademark sound of their respective predecessors.

Tax Time Already (RRSPs Part 1)

Actually tax time never ends. We should be thinking about potential

tax liabilities and tax savings all year, but as we are now in January of 2013, we don’t have much choice regarding 2012 taxes other than buying Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs).

RRSPs are an excellent tax deferral arrangement. Tax is saved in the current year in hopes greater growth will occur on your investments because the investment is larger due to no tax being collected on the investment or any accruing income as long as the money remains in the RRSP. Tax will be paid when the investment is cashed in, hopefully when you have retired and incidentally may have lower income. If you withdraw the RRSPS earlier, you pay taxes at that time.

I mentioned “hopefully …have a lower rate.” If you save tax at a marginal rate of 25.8% (lowest rate in Manitoba) and pay back at 46.4% there is less of an advantage than if the situation is reversed. Although the time value of having money protected from tax can be considerable and the tax free

earnings add to this benefit.As well, you can make

contributions out of your calculated limit to a spouse. This can assist in splitting income for couples on retirement although splitting is not as important now that we have a provision for calculating and spitting income. My concern is government can always change the rules and permanently putting the RRSP contribution in your spouse’s names avoids a possible change of government policy, however unlikely. The purchase of a spousal RRSP also make sense as it allows the high earner to buy a spousal RRSP and take advantage of the higher deduction from their income at the time of purchase while transferring future income to their spouse.

The amount of your contributions is limited, calculated at the lesser of 18% of the previous year’s earned income and, in 2012, $22,970. If a contribution is not made in any year the limit is accumulated and added to future years. Earned income is calculated according to specific rules and includes:

- Employment income less union dues and employment

expenses- Research income less research expenses- Net income from self-employment and active partnership income- CPP/QPP disability payments- Royalties- Net rental income-Alimony and separation allowances received-Employee profit sharing allocations-Supplementary unemployment benefit plan payments but not EI Less:- Current year’s from self-employment and active partnership income- Deductible alimony and maintenance payments- Current year rental losses.

Over contributions are strictly limited to a maximum of $2,000 in any year with the intention of avoiding the abuse of putting more money into RRSPs where interest is protected from taxation. The penalty is 1% per month of the over contribution.

There are some limits placed on where you can invest your RRSP contributions, mostly designed to ensure security of the investment. Allowed investments include GICs, cash, term deposits, bonds, publicly listed shares, some private shares of corporations, mortgages and precious metals. One cautionary note for RRSPs and other investments in foreign investments, which have been allowed since 2005 in RRSP portfolios, is to approach them with caution. A good knowledge

The Wonderful Wedding Show is a one stop shop for many blushing brides

and the grooms that somehow feel they could be watching a football game on the couch at the Shaw

booth. With over 400 exhibitors and daily fashion shows, the show can be extremely overwhelming for many brides and bridal parties. The 2-day Wonderful Wedding Show is extremely critical for

vendors who rely on the show for filling up their spring, summer and fall calendar. Here's a small sample of the Filipino owned and operated businesses that graced this year's show!

Kathryn considers Daniel as a close friend and confidante

One of the country’s hottest on-screen couples these days are Kathryn

Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.Kathryn calls Daniel by his

nickname, DJ. She said she they are close to each other as a love team and even off the camera.

The two Kapamilya stars were together in the recent Metro Manila Film Festival movie entry “Sisterakas” where they essayed supporting roles.

Although their TV series “Princess and I” is on its last showing days, the tandem are

reportedly preparing for another teleserye.

Kathryn welcomes working with Daniel anew whether in the movies or on TV as she considers him Kathryn both friend and confidante.

Dawn Zulueta addresses issue on replacing Maricel Soriano

Actress Dawn Zulueta has directly addressed the controversy about

replacing Maricel Soriano during the recent press conference for “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin.”

Dawn said she liked the script of the teleserye although she admitted she did not accept it right away because she still had to talk to key people especially her husband who is running for

another term as congressman in Davao del Norte.

The actress added that she has not had the chance to talk to Maricel about her decision since everything happened so fast. On the day she met the media, she also did pictorial and a video shoot for the teleserye in the morning.

Dawn said she hopes to do justice to the role because she loves Maricel as a dear colleague, and considering that the role was originally for her.

Filipino film wins international film fest award“Metro Manila,” a film starring

and co-produced by Filipinos has won the Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

The movie was recognized at the awarding ceremony held Saturday night (US time) under the World Cinema Dramatic Competition. The film was in the same category as 11 other films from other countries that include Chile, South Korea, Austria, Afghanistan, and Germany.

The Sundance official website describes “Metro Manila” as a film about a Filipino family seeking greener pastures in the Philippine capital. However, they encountered difficulties from manipulations of its hardened locals forcing lead character Oscar to confront the perils he faces in his new job and life.

The film stars Filipino actors John Arcilla, Althea Vega, Jake Macapagal, JM Rodriguez and

Ana Abad Santos, among others. It was also produced by the United Kingdom through Sean Ellis, an Oscar and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)-nominated British filmmaker. Ellis likewise served as director and co-writer.

Sundance was founded by Robert Redford and has been recognizing films with the most original and authentic storytelling for more than two decades now.

Party as a typical family celebration. One would be happy to see

the family members enjoyed the celebration of Christmas. Games for the children and for adults were held. The prizes were the real treat for those children who won the game; the adults also participated in some of the contests. It was a total enjoyment for everyone to see how the adults won and lost in some of the

funny and exciting games.Led by Lyn Mackay, the

outgoing president, the Christmas Party has become an annual gathering for the Filipinos who are living the City of Brandon. She welcomed all the guests and extended thanks her officers and members and the donors and sponsors who committed themselves to make the Christmas party a success.

Naty Delbridge, the incoming president, together with Edith Strange, owner of Tim Tom Asian

Grocery (one of the sponsors) and the officers and officers and volunteers were involved to make the family Christmas Party as a memorable event especially for the guests and for the new immigrants who had arrived lately.

No doubt, the Westman Filipino Association of the City of Brandon Christmas Party is a celebration of our family tradition of giving and sharing. Everyone was happy and it was truly a Christmas Party for the families.

Hudson the Polar Bear Has Arrived in WinnipegThe Assiniboine Park Zoo is

pleased to report that Hudson, the 15 month old polar bear from the

Toronto Zoo, has arrived in Winnipeg safe and sound and has moved into his temporary home at the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre (IPBCC).

“Hudson is in good spirits after making the trip from Toronto”, said Tim Sinclair-Smith, Director of Zoological Operations at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. “All indications are that it will be a smooth transition as he adapts to his new surroundings.”

Hudson is the first polar bear to make his temporary home in the IPBCC and the first identified inhabitant for the Zoo’s upcoming Journey to Churchill exhibit opening in 2014. The outdoor enclosure at the IPBCC has been renovated and expanded to specifically accommodate polar bears and is three times its original size.

Now that Hudson has arrived at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, he will spend some time adapting to his new home and is not available for photography or viewing at this time. The Assiniboine Park Zoo is still working to confirm a date for when Hudson will be on exhibit to the public. More information will be made available as soon details are confirmed.

Donaire-Mares fight contract released to media

Golden Boy Promotions has released to the media a copy of the contract

for the unification fight between WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. and WBC super bantamweight titlist Abner Mares.

Golden Boy said the contract, which they earlier sent to rival company Top Rank, stipulated among others, Top Rank receiving $3 million from Golden Boy that the company can use in compensating Donaire, along with allocations for airfare tickets and accommodation for Donaire’s team.

The document further stated that the event will be presented as Golden Boy Promotions, in association with Top Rank and the name of sponsors or the owner of the site of the event.

Meanwhile, Donaire claimed that he and his camp have not seen a copy of the contract.

For his part, Top Rank chief Bob Arum dismissed the contract as a mere proposal. Arum said it is impossible to stage the fight in June as proposed by Golden Boy since they have a commitment to HBO to fight on April 30. He added that another factor is that Donaire and his wife are expecting a child in June.

The Top Rank head said he is also eyeing Guillermo Rigondeaux and Vic Darchinyan as possible opponents for Donaire. Rigondeaux, an undefeated Cuban, holds the WBA version of the super bantamweight title.

Winnipeg Jets Report

Jets Nation is AliveIt was a long 113-days for

many NHL fans including those of the Winnipeg Jets.

The Senators came into Winnipeg for the opening game and had to spoil the fun by beating the Jets 4-1.

In their first road game against the Boston Bruins, the Jets lost in a tough game that ended in an overtime, shoot-out loss. The next night in one of many back-to-back games saw the Jets steal a win in Washington 4-2 against the Capitals. It was their first win of the season and more importantly, their first win on the road.

Sidney Crosby was sidelined for much of last year's season and never made it to Winnipeg. Game 4 of the shortened regular season and the Jets-Penguins game was the hottest ticket in town. After tWo quick goals by Sid the Kid in the opening period, you could hear a pin drop at MTS Centre. The Jets would roar back with Andrew Ladd scoring the game

winnipeg goal. Jets won that game 4-2 and Jets fans were happy to see Crosby enjoy a true Canadian winter.

The Jets won a scrappy back and forth game against the visiting New York Islanders last Sunday at the Hanger (5-4 in overtime). Starting a short three-game road trip in Montreal, the Jets lost a tough game at the Bell Centre against the Canadiens 4-5.

The Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning host the Jets in sunny Florida this week before coming back to the MTS Centre on February 5th with a rematch against the Panthers.

After the first two weeks of the season, the Jets are showing definite improvements over last year. The first line of Olli Jokinen, Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane are showing good signs and translating to goals and points. Even better, ESPN's NHL Power Rankings had the Winnipeg Jets jump 14 spots! Let's try not to shout Stanley Cup too soon!

Ambassador Gatan graces the Isabela Association of Manitoba party

Ambassador Leslie Gatan was a special guest during the Christmas party of the Isabela Association of Manitoba held at Canad Inns, McPhillips.

During this annual celebration, Eril Deculing, IAM president, on behalf of the officers and members, received a special award from the Isabela State University. Dr. Myrna Maramag, a university official who attended the event, presented the award in recognition of the association’s donation to the university. Dr. Maramag thanked and congratulated the officers and members for their commitments to help their “kababayans” in the province of Isabela. At the same

event, Ambassador Gatan received a plaque of recognition for his role as the Philippine ambassador to Canada. Special performance was held by some officers and members of the association.

Association of Ilocano of Manitoba (AIM) celebrates Christmas with elan

Headed by the president of the Association of Ilocano in Manitoba, Mario Rosario,

the Christmas celebration was full of fun, food, dancing and enthusiasm.

With invited guests from the three levels of the government and some officers and members from different Filipino associations in attendance, the annual celebration was well attended, making AIM as one of the biggest celebration ever

experienced in Winnipeg during the Christmas holiday.

Colourful dance numbers were performed by many dance groups. The AIM officers and members presented a special dance number. Some guests rendered songs to entertain the guests.
