Volunteering is good for your health and well beingBy Valerie McElvy RSVP Director For Beaver County Senior News

Whether or not you are still in the work force, finding time to volunteer is often difficult. But did you know that volunteering can actual-ly help to keep you healthy?

Volunteering helps fight depression

A key risk factor for seniors is depression and social iso-lation. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others, which can help you develop a solid support system that can be very ben-eficial when going through challenging times. Working with pets and other animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety.

Volunteering increases self-confidence

Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-esteem and life satisfac-tion. When you are doing good for others and the

community, it provides you with a natural sense of ac-complishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. The better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a posi-tive view of your life and future goals.

Volunteering provides benefits to physical health

Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy. Volun-teering is good for your health at any age, but it’s especially beneficial in older adults. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not, even when considering factors like the health of the par-ticipants. Volunteering has also been shown to lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease.

Limited mobility does not have to stand in the way of volunteering

Whether it is due to a lack of transportation, a disabil-ity or other reasons, many people prefer to volunteer via phone, computer or some other project that can be done from home. Do you like to knit or crochet? Perhaps making phone calls to the sick or homebound would appeal to you. Are you a writer or graphic designer? There are many organizations that could use your help. These are just a few examples of volunteer projects that can be done from home.

To inquire about volunteer-ing with RSVP, call (724) 378-7547 or email [email protected]. BCSN

Protect yourself in your home during cold weatherBy Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

As I am writing this article, it is 2 degrees outside. Even if your furnace is working, some

parts of your home may not be as warm as others. Some of your interior pipes may be prone to freezing since they are located along a perimeter wall. It is not only important to protect the people in your home but to safeguard your home to prevent damage and expensive repairs. Here are some tips to keep in mind to protect yourself in your home during the cold. It is important to stay warm enough to prevent hypothermia or confusion due to prolonged expo-sure to cold.

• Make sure you have enough blankets, clothing, food and beverages.

• If you use a portable space heater, keep it at least one foot away from people, pets and flammable objects. Do not leave them on when no one is home. Unplug electric heaters when not in use.

• If there is a power outage, use candles only when attended.

• Have a fire extinguisher available in case something happens with the heat-ers or candles.

• If water pipes are prone to freezing, keep cabinet doors open near the pipes to allow warm air from the home to eas-ily reach them. Open water faucets far enough to let water slowly drip from them, and they are less likely to freeze if water continuously flows through them. Wrap pipes with insulation.

Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors

February 2015 • Beaver County Senior News

Spring is right around the corner. It’s the time of year when we are shaking off the cold winter blues and thinking more about new spring styles, bright col-

ors, walking outside and maybe even traveling. To keep moving ahead this spring, we must be steady on our feet! As we become older, it is important to be aware that our balance may not be as good as it used to be. If we are not steady on our feet, we may fall and sustain serious injuries.

We are all at risk of falling; however, there is a difference if we fall at an older age. As we age, there is a higher risk that falls can result in hip, spine or forearm fractures. The recovery time is also much longer. Falling is NOT a normal part of aging and many falls can be prevented. In order to be proactive so a fall does not spoil your ability to enjoy the outdoors year, please join us at Healthy Steps for Older Adults program.

Trained staff and volunteers have already educated ap-proximately 750 people in Beaver County through the Healthy Steps program. Some of their responses have been: “I learned something I didn’t know before and had fun”, “The time went so fast” and “I enjoyed meeting other people, and appreciated the breakfast and nutri-tional lunch.” Through a brief assessment, you will receive specific information about the changes you can make to increase your balance and strength and lead a productive and active life.

Put your best foot forward this spring

The program is sponsored by the Beaver County Office on Aging and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging for anyone age 55 or older. Listed below are four locations hosting the program this spring. It is held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at each location, and continental breakfast and lunch are included. Call or stop by your preferred loca-tion to register. There is no charge for this class, however, seating is limited so don’t wait to make your reservation.

April 10 at Aliquippa Circle of Friends St. Titus Church School Hall 107 Sycamore St., Aliquippa (724) 857-9989

April 14 at Center at the Mall, next to Hallmark Beaver Valley Mall (724) 774-5654

May 1 at Baden Circle of Friends St. John the Baptist Church 371 Linmore Ave., Baden (724) 869-4224

Topics included in the training session are:

• preventing falls and injuries and knowing what to do if you do fall.

• moving and staying active and making your home safer.

• securing proper foot care and footwear.

• learning the importance of good nutrition.

• gaining information about the locations of fitness programs in Beaver County.

By Tesi Dye Care Management Supervisor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

The Beaver County Office on Aging has funds available to help support

local caregivers through education, benefits counseling, monthly reimburse-ment and an annual caregiver recogni-tion luncheon. Here is an example of how the program can assist caregivers.

Jake is the primary unpaid caregiver for his wife, June, who has had dementia for several years. He provides most of the daily hands-on care for June. He does private pay for some added assistance. Jake hires his neighbor, Jill, to sit with June every Thursday evening so he can go to his church meeting. He also hires an aide from a local home care agency to come three times a week to help June get into the shower. Jake purchases adult diapers, as June has started to have daily bladder accidents.

Working with his care manager, he re-cently had a ramp installed. At the end of each month, Jake submits receipts show-ing the amount he had paid his neighbor and the care agency for their work. He also submits receipts showing the cost of

Seniors on the Web• www.aging.pa.gov is the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s new website, which includes aging services information on caregiver support, employment, health and wellness, housing, insurance, meals, prescriptions and protection and rights. You can find local resources, including contact information for all the Area Agencies on Aging statewide in addition to adult day center and senior community centers. Publica-tions are also available on the website, such as the Benefits and Rights Handbook.

• www.nihseniorhealth.gov provides health and wellness information for older adults from the National Institutes of Health. The site features health topics from A to Z, exercise stories featuring older adults and the diverse activities they enjoy, short health videos on current medical information, tips for healthy living, and in-spiring stories of older adults who are coping with diseases or conditions of aging.

Funds are available to support local caregiversthe incontinence supplies he purchased. The following month he receives a check reimbursing him for 90 percent of his costs up to $500. He was able to get reimbursement for $1,800 of the $2,000 he spent to have the ramp built. Jake has read several of the caregiver books pro-vided by the care manager. He attended the annual recognition luncheon in May and enjoyed the lunch, educational speakers and gift bags. He is able to call his care manager when he has questions or needs more information.

Caregivers cannot receive payment of any kind for the care they provide to the individual. Sometimes applicants think that the Caregiver program will pay them for the work they do. This is not possible. The program reimburses the primary unpaid caregiver for the cost they expend to purchase approved ser-vices and supplies for the care receiver. Verification of income and assets is part of the assessment and help to determine the amount of reimbursement.

If you are a caregiver and think you might benefit from this program, call the Information and Referral Department at (724) 847-2262. Let them know that you would like to be evaluated for the Family Caregiver Program. BCSN

Working with children has been a cor-nerstone of Roberts’ life work. She has received international recognition for her landmark therapy with children and adults suffering from emotional disorders. Her unique methods were established while working with a group of Navajos on an Indian reser-vation, and focused on building up individuals’ self-esteem by emphasiz-ing their abilities rather than their dis-abilities. She furthered her impression on the field of psychiatry by pursuing a master’s degree in education at Antioch University late into her 50’s. Expand-ing her knowledge and education on the subject led her to applying her techniques to individuals in hospitals across the East Coast. The attention her work received led her to present at the International Congress of Child Psychi-atry, where doctors from Scandinavia invited her to demonstrate her methods in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Austra-lia and areas across the United States. A documentary was made to illustrate the implication of her work and the outstanding progress.

Roberts has also devoted much of her time to her acting career. For more than 50 years, she could be found perform-ing in theaters across the eastern United States. At age 75, she decided to step away from the stage to pursue her love for acting in an entirely different way. Her passion to help others and her adoration for theater cultivated into the Suzanne Roberts Cultural Development Fund. The fund offers an incredible amount of financial support and op-portunity to more than 40 Philadelphia area theater and dance companies.

Roberts created a television program in an attempt to fill the gap in program-ming that she identified for people over the age of 45. As the creator and host of “Seeking Solutions with Suzanne”, a nationally syndicated information and entertainment show targeted to the old-

er generations, Roberts is a role model who provides seniors with information to enrich their lives and broaden their medical knowledge. The show can be seen regularly on Reinventing Your Life TV in markets throughout the United States. The show covers topics ranging from Alzheimer’s to Pilates, same-sex marriage and the latest fads in diet and nutrition. Fearless and forthright, Rob-erts has demonstrated everything from belly dancing to performing with the Opera Company of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Ballet, ridden a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and even filmed her own cataract removal surgery. To date, she has received more than 21 awards. It is no wonder why the Wom-en’s Image Network honored Roberts for her extraordinary accomplish-ments with one of the most prestigious awards in the television industry: The Lifetime Achievement Award.

Roberts’ passion for helping others goes well beyond her contributions to the performing arts and television. She

is particularly proud of her family’s ef-forts to support cutting edge medical research. Among which is their dona-tion to The Hospital of the University Of Pennsylvania and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which made possible the acquisition of five proton therapy machines offering critically ill patients the most innovative form of cancer treatment available today. This past fall, Roberts gave a $2 million gift to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore that will be used to establish the Suzanne Roberts Native American Dream Fund at the school’s Center for American Indian Health. The fund will focus on helping Johns Hopkins Center take measureable steps in demonstrating, packaging and scaling public health interventions to improve the health, education and economic status of American Indian youth, their families and communities.

Another achievement that Suzanne can boast about is her successful 73-year marriage to husband Ralph. The

two can point to many reasons their union has thrived for so long, and chief among them is their continual interest in learning new things. Suzanne says, “After 73 years, we have learned by lots of experience that marriage is all about the give and take and compromise. You can’t always have things your way. Having a sense of humor helps too and not taking life too seriously. If you have an argument, and they are inevitable in any relationship, don’t try to solve it while you’re emotionally charged. You must wait until you have both calmed down so you can talk rationally when trying to figure out a compromise.”

Together the Roberts’ have raised five children and consider among their proudest achievements that fact that each of them has pursued his or her pas-sion in life while never losing sight of the importance of giving back. Their desire to expose and educate their children about different cultures sparked travel to some unconventional locales. One summer the entire family volunteered on the Navajo reservation, which pro-

foundly impacted each member of the Roberts clan in a special way. Suzanne’s desire to instill her children with curios-ity, empathy, appreciation and respect for others has marked her own storied life, and inspires her still today.

Seeking Solutions with Suzanne can be seen weekly on Reinventing Your Life TV

on Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. The show’s upcoming season will profile Cooking for One, Macular Degeneration, Antiques and Everyday Treasures, Senior Sports, Green Roofing, Weight Lifting with Seniors, and New York City’s Raiders of Concrete at Union Square street dance crew.
