MAGAZINE Heathfield High School ISSUE 12 - 10 February 2012 AVAILABLE TO VIEW ONLINE: www.heathfield.leics.sch.uk BECOMING AN ACADEMY As you are aware, recently, 8PH held a drink and cake sale to raise money to support the charity, heart link. We decided on this charity because it is important to some of the members of our class, one person (and their brother) was saved by this charity and another’s sister was saved due to the help and care of heart link. Many members of our tutor group took part by baking cakes or buying drinks and cups, and also some by just giving up their own lunch and break times to help sell the sweet treats and others supported this by buying and eating the cakes. From selling everything we made a grand total of £67.40! We would like to thank everyone who made, sold and brought the cakes and we hope to have the same support in any future fundraising events. Thanks, Everyone in PH. The school Governors are planning to apply for Heathfield to become an Academy from September. This will increase our independence and improve our facilities. All parents of Heathfield students have received a letter about this. There is lots of information on the DfE website (dfe.gov.uk). We are also keen to hear the views of primary parents. If you would like to make comments about the proposal please email them to: academy@heathfield. leics.sch.uk. There is a meeting for Heathfield parents and staff to ask questions about this proposal on Wednesday 8th Feb at 6.30 pm. Parents of year 6 pupils are also welcome to attend this meeting. CAKE SALE SUCCESS!

BECOMING AN ACADEMY

As you are aware, recently, 8PH held a drink and cake sale to raise money to support the charity, heart link. We decided on this charity because it is important to some of the members of our class, one person (and their brother) was saved by this charity and another’s sister was saved due to the help and care of heart link. Many members of our tutor group took part by baking cakes or buying drinks and cups, and

also some by just giving up their own lunch and break times to help sell the sweet treats and others supported this by buying and eating the cakes. From selling everything we made a grand total of £67.40! We would like to thank everyone who made, sold and brought the cakes and we hope to have the same support in any future fundraising events. Pondylink is a small UK based organisation offering direct help to destitute children in Tamil Nadu. Money raised in England is used to support 153 children living in Saint Francis of Assisi Hostel & Orphanage.

Pondylink provides help to over 500 children from poor families at St. Francis School. We sponsor girls from the Hostel so that they can go on to higher education as a way out of the ‘poverty trap’

Supporting the School After the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004, schools in Hinckley raised

over £20,000 to create & furnish new classrooms at St. Francis Assisi School near Pondicherry. The building was opened in June 2007. With donations from two schools in HASP we have been able to fully equip a laboratory so children are now able to do practical work. Before, all science teaching was from text books. HASP also provided furniture for three classrooms, separate toilets for boys & girls (Before, there were no toilets!) - and a separate supply of fresh drinking water. Other donations have provided sports & games equipment for indoor and outdoor use.
