8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
Philipp Nicolai, Johann Herrmann, Paul GerhardtSunday, October 26, 2014 + 9:30 a.m.
JUSTIFIED BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the Gospel of Christ—the Good News—that makes us free! Though we give thanks for the events of the sixteenth-century Reformation that brought renewalto the church, we pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to unite the church today in its proclamation and witness to the world. In the waters of Baptism we are made one body; we pray forthe day that all Christians will also be one at the Lord's Table.
Philipp Nicolai, died 1608; Johann Heermann, died 1647; Paul Gerhardt, died 1676;hymnwriters These great hymnwriters all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in times of war and plague. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in one week. He wrote "O Morning Star, how fair and bright" and "Wake, awake, for night is flying." Heermann's hymns, including "Ah, holy Jesus,"often express the emotions of faith. Gerhardt, perhaps the greatest Lutheran hymnwriter, was a pastor in Berlin.

The WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS
The BRIEF ORDER FOR CONFESION & FORGIVENESS
The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of Holy Baptism as the presiding ministerbegins.
In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthilymagnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
On this Reformation Sunday, let us confess to Almighty God our part in tearing the body of Christ, our responsibility for continuing the brokenness of the Church,
our blindness in assuming that a divided Church is God’s will, our pride in thinking that all necessary truth is already in our possession, our self-centered regard only for ourselves.Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbors.
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what wehave done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen
The presiding minister addresses the assembly.
Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for hissake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of theChurch of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entireforgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, andof the Holy Spirit. Amen
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
The presiding minister prays the prayer of the day.
Let us pray…the prayer concludes…one God, now and forever. Amen.
The assembly is seated.
WORD God’s Word is proclaimed in Scripture reading and preaching
The FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:31–34The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people to liveupright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the cause of the poor and needy (Jer. 22:16). The renewed covenant is possible only because the Lord will forgive iniquity and not remembersin. Our hope lies in a God who forgets.
31The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant
that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out
of the land of Egypt — a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband,
says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write iton their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer
shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall
all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will
forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.
The reading concludes:
The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.
The PSALMODY Psalm 46 After organ introduction, the choir or cantor will sing the refrain once, then repeated by all. Theassembly sings the refrain.
1God is our ref- | uge and strength,a very present | help in trouble.
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
2Therefore we will not fear, though the | earth be moved,and though the mountains shake in the depths | of the sea;
3though its waters | rage and foam, and though the mountains tremble | with its tumult.
4There is a river whose streams make glad the cit- | y of God,the holy habitation of | the Most High.
5God is in the midst of the city; it shall | not be shaken;God shall help it at the | break of day.
6The nations rage, and the | kingdoms shake;God speaks, and the earth | melts away. Refrain
7
The LORD of|
hosts is with us;the God of Jacob | is our stronghold.
8Come now, regard the works | of the LORD, what desolations God has brought up- | on the earth;
9behold the one who makes war to cease in | all the world; who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the | shields with fire.
10"Be still, then, and know that | I am God;I will be exalted among the nations;I will be exalted | in the earth."
11The LORD of | hosts is with us;the God of Jacob | is our stronghold. Refrain
The SECOND READING Romans 3:19–28Paul's words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and the other Reformation leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are brought into aright relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ's death. This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.
19Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the
law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held
accountable to God.20
For "no human being will be justified in his sight" by deedsprescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin.21But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is
attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in
Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23since all have sinned
and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift,
through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,25
whom God put forward as asacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his
righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is
righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus.27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works?
No, but by the law of faith.28
For we hold that a person is justified by faith apartfrom works prescribed by the law.
The reading concludes:
The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.
The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel as it comes into the assembly. Please follow the Cross ofChrist as the following is sung.
The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
The HOLY GOSPEL John 8:31–36 Jesus speaks of truth and freedom as spiritual realities known through his word. He reveals the truththat sets people free from sin.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
The Holy +1 Gospel according to JohnGlory to you, O Lord.
31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." 33They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have neverbeen slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, 'You will be made free'?"34
Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave
1 Using the thumb, the people may make three small signs of the cross, one on the forehead, one on the lips, and one on the breast whilesilently using the traditional prayer, “May the Good News of Jesus Christ be in my mind, and on my lips, and in my heart. Amen”

to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has aplace there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
The reading concludes:
The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.
The assembly is seated after the procession returns to its places.
The CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
The SERMON

The HYMN OF THE DAY Built on a Rock
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
With the whole church, let us confess our faith using the Apostles’ Creed andMartin Luther’s Small Catechism.
Do you believe in God the Father?I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
What is this?I believe that God has created me together with all that exists.God has given me and still preserves my body and soul:eyes, ears, and all limbs and senses; reason and all mental faculties.
In addition, God daily and abundantly providesshoes and clothing, food and drink, house and farm, spouse and children, fields, livestock, and all property—along with all the necessities and nourishmentfor this body and life.God protects me against all dangerand shields and preserves me from all evil. And all this is done out of pure, fatherly, and divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness of mine at all!For all of this I owe it to God to thank and praise, serve and obey him. This is most certainly true.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spiritand born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
What is this?I believe that Jesus Christ, true God,begotten of the Father in eternity, and also a true human being, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord.He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned human being. He has purchased and freed mefrom all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with his holy, precious bloodand with his innocent suffering and death.
He has done all this in order that I may belong to him, living under him in his kingdom, and serve him in eternal righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he is risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
What is this?I believe that by my own understanding or strengthI cannot believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him,but instead the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, made me holy and kept me in the true faith, just as he calls, gathers, enlightens,
and makes holy the whole Christian church on earthand kept it with Jesus Christ in the one common, true faith.Daily in this Christian churchthe Holy Spirit abundantly forgives all sins—mine and those of all believers. On the last daythe Holy Spirit will raises me and all the deadand will give to me and all believers in Christ eternal life.
This is most certainly true.

The GREAT THANKGIVINGThe Lord be with you. And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is indeed right our duty and our joy…the Preface continues, concluding…
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
The EUCHARISTIC PRAYERBlessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth.
In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son,that all those who believe in him should not perish,
but have eternal life. We give thanks to you
for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ.Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts,
that we may receive our Lord with a living faithas he comes to us in his holy supper.
Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
The Words of Institution is sung according to tones composed by Martin Luther. The tones are thesame to connect the Gospel with the Sacrament.
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:T AKE AND EAT; THIS IS MY +BODY , GIVEN FOR YOU.
DO THIS FOR THE REMEMBRANCE OF ME. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:THIS CUP IS THE NEW COVENANT IN MY +BLOOD,SHED FOR YOU AND FOR ALL PEOPLE FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SIN.
DO THIS FOR THE REMEMBRANCE OF ME.
The LORD’S PRAYER (1789)Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread;and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
The BREAKING OF THE BREAD This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are we whoare called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall behealed.
The assembly is seated
The DISTRIBUTION OF THE HOLY SACRAMENT Access to the Lord’s Table is by invitation of the Lord himself. All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usher and returningalong the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may come forward with their arms crossedand receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receive the wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicant still receives the whole Christ.
8/10/2019 Feast of the Reformation, Sunday, October 26, 2014

We know little about these apostles. Simon is listed as "the zealot" or Cananean in NewTestament lists. Jude, also called Thaddeus, asked Jesus at the last supper why he hadrevealed himself to the disciples but not to the world.
Friday, October 31Reformation Day
By the end of the seventeenth century, many Lutheran churches celebrated a festivalcommemorating Martin Luther's posting of the Ninety-five Theses, a summary of abusesin the church of his time. At the heart of the reform movement was the gospel, the goodnews that it is by grace through faith that we are justified and set free.
COMMEMORATION OF THE F AITHFUL DEPARTED
Commemoration of the Faithful Departed: Sunday,November 2 is All Saints Sunday . Our family in faith willgather to offer praise and thanks to God for the lives and

Their names will be read as the tower bell tolls, allow us time to reflectupon the gifts and the joy they brought into our lives.
