8/18/2019 FE Exam Review http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/fe-exam-review 1/62 Corrections to Problems and Solutions in the “FE Exam Review” Section of the Beer and Johnston, Statics/Dynamics Website Prepared by Stephen F. Felszeghy Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering California State University, Los Angeles [email protected]During the course of teaching the “Dynamics” portion of a review course for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam, I used and referred my students to the “FE Exam Review” link, that appears once a textbook chapter is selected, on the following Beer and Johnston, Statics/Dynamics Website: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0073529400/student_view0/index.html . The “FE Exam Review” link presents to the student review problems, which the student is asked to solve, and then the student has to select for each problem the correct answer among multiple choices. I discovered that several of the problems in the “FE Exam Review” section have errors in their statements, solutions, and multiple- choice answers. Some of the mistakes in the solutions are quite serious because they involve the application of wrong physical principles. In this document, I list the errors and corrections. To this end, I have divided the remainder of the document into two parts: Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 of the document lists all the online problems and solutions from Chapters 11 through 17, and Chapter 19. I do not cover Chapter 18 in my FE exam review class. When a student accesses the problems online, the problems appear to the student in a random order and without numbers. For this reason, in Part 1, I list all the problems and I assign numbers to them in a manner similar to that used in the textbook. Part 2 of the document lists the errors and corrections according to the problem numbering scheme laid out in Part 1. My statements above apply equally to the following website: http://ewhighered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/007230491x/student_view0/index.html .
