“INNOVATION… striving to be the best.. offering products to the market that are faster, more efficient and easier to use… with the same functionality as any other’s solutions for z/OS, z/VM and Linux on z Systems.”
• z/VM and LINUX on z Systems • GREATER AMOUNT OF DATA • A VERY LARGE NUMBER OF VOLUMES • USE TECHNOLOGY to IMPROVE PERFORMANCE and EFFICIENCY • AUTOMATE to ELIMINATE HUMAN ERROR
The FDR Data Protection Suite Answers Today’s
Cloud, Big Data, Analytics, Mobile and Social Challenges !
What’s new in the FDR Data Protection Suite Continuously Evolving To Be More Efficient
FDR/ABR • Extends ABR Data Protection to z/VM and Linux on z Systems DASD • Employs zEDC Hardware Compression (zEnterprise Data Compression) • Reduces Archive Recall Times • Coexistence for Transitioning Off of Older Legacy Backup/Restore Solutions • Extends Archive Protection in to the Next Century FDRINSTANT • Employs new FLASHCOPY technology for more efficient Remote Data Protection • Allows Selecting to Backup from multiple Point in Time Disk Images FDREPORT Wider scope and greater precision • Full reporting from offline INSTANT, z/VM & z/Linux volumes • CSV format output for further analytics with larger fields for higher values • Track System Storage Tiering with date of last Transition
What’s new in FDR and ABR • ABR data protection for z/VM and Linux on z Systems DASD Volumes
– Full-volume backup and restore for CPVOL format z/VM volumes – Full-volume backup and restore for CDL format Linux on z Systems volumes. – Extends use of FDRINSTANT to VM and Linux on z volumes for point in time backup
• New zEDC Hardware Data Compression – z12 (and up) hardware compression saves disk and tape backup storage space – Significantly reduces CPU and elapsed time for compression – Hardware and software decompression available for disaster recovery
• z/OS 2.1 Style Parallel Batch Recall – recalls ARCHIVEd data sets for entire job in one pass, instead of just for one step.
• ABR can now coexist permanently with CA Disk or temporarily for conversion
• Archive now accepts expiration dates from 2028 to 2107
FDRINSTANT… for fast, easy to use, non-disruptive data protection • Enhances FDR and ABR to simplify non-disruptive backup and rapid restore • FDRINSTANT employs EMC, Hitachi and IBM Local Hardware Replication
i.e. Volume and data set (track level) replication within a DASD subsystem – EMC TimeFinder CLONE / SNAP, Hitachi ShadowImage, IBM FlashCopy
• FDRINSTANT interfaces with EMC, Hitachi and IBM Remote Hdw Replication i.e. Volume replication across DASD subsystems
– EMC SRDF, Hitachi TrueCopy, IBM MetroMirror (PPRC) /Global Mirror (XRC) • Fulfills client needs for flexibility to satisfy unique and custom requirements
with an intuitive, familiar and easy to use interface.
FDRINSTANT Unique Approach... • Using hardware data replication, duplicate offline volumes appear instantly, but
because z/OS will not permit volumes with a duplicate VOLSER to come online • Other backup products
– Can’t work directly with the offline volumes – Backup requires special re-labeling of volumes to bring them online – Recovery requires special JCL and volume conditioning to make restores usable
• Only FDRINSTANT – Works directly with off-line duplicate volumes – Backup and restore needs no re-labeling or special conditioning procedures – Protects against z/OS systems attempting to mount duplicate volumes – Recovery requires absolutely no change to existing DR restore JCL
What’s new in FDRINSTANT • FDRINSTANT and ABRINSTANT for zVM and z/LINUX VOLUMES
– Non-distruptive full-volume backup and rapid restore for CPVOL format z/VM volumes – Non-distruptive full-volume backup and rapid restore for CDL format Linux on z volumes.
• SELECTIVE ABRINSTANT “STAGGERED” BACKUP DUMP – Users maintaining multiple ABRINSTANT back imagers on disk can easily specify backup
versions, other than the most current, for DUMP to tape/disk.
• FDRINSTANT, ABRINSTANT and FDRCOPY use New FLASHCOPY Commands Remote Mirror (Inband) & Remote Pair (Preserve Mirror) – Remote Mirror, FC commands to primary PPRC are sent across the link to a remote secondary – Preserve Mirror (Remote Pair), employs Inband FlashCopy commands to eliminate data
transfer, prevent the Metro Mirror from going into duplex pending and keep HyperSwap protection active by performing the FlashCopy operations at the remote site
