Rebecca Lancaster, new
president of Warwick Rotary
From the desk of DG Andy - Never let a crisis pass by!
This Rotary year of crisis opened opportunities for people and organizations who looked for new opportunities. It was for Warwick Rotary in Queensland, one of the smallest clubs in our district for the past 10 years. How did Warwick Rotary increase members by 200% in 10 months? This 2nd oldest club in D9640 chartered in 1932 with 27 members had only 7 members when I took office on 1
st July 2020.
They dropped to 2 members in March. On 30
th April 2021, the club
reported 14 members. 8 were female. 7 under the age of 40 years. 3 former Rotaractors. What was the magic?
Last July one of my first actions was to invite the president and secretary of Warwick Rotary to a heart-to-heart chat in Warwick. Joining me was Immediate Past Governor Harry Bolton from Tenterfield and Past Governor Neil Maxwell from the nearby Warwick Sunrise club that had 30 members. As Governor, I put on the table 2 choices we had. The easy way out, as required by Rotary International to recommend the termination of clubs with 6 or fewer active members. Or take the less travelled road to create a "revolutionary change" and make this grand old club relevant to today's world by 30
th April 2021.
Past Governor Neil Maxwell a smart lawyer & leader in Warwick took up my challenge to create a "revolutionary change" in the Warwick Rotary within this time frame. He did not want Warwick Rotary to be like KODAK and thrown into a dustbin in history. I appointed Neil as my "Governors Special Representative to Save Warwick Rotary". He had a passion to save Warwick Rotary as his grandfather Sam Maxwell was the charter president in 1932. In the 1950s the club had over 40 members attend weekly dinner meetings. His father too was a president in 1943-44. Neil was club president in 1978-79. Later he moved to Warwick Sunrise and sill he and his wife are members of this vibrant breakfast club.
Neil patiently went about with a "changed mindset" that he was starting a new club to attract young professionals to lunch or evening cocktails. He was clear it will not be the same old Warwick club. He diplomatically approached Rebecca Lancaster a former Rotaractor from Warwick, now an eminent young lawyer in Warwick to join the club's leadership team to reposition Warwick Rotary. A few months later amidst her busy lifestyle, she introduced Neil to 12 other young professionals who showed interest in joining Rotary. Very skilfully PDG Neil facilitated a smooth transition of leadership for Rebecca to step up as President and another former Rotaractor Claudia to be Secretary and a senior remaining member to continue as Treasurer. After a few discussion evenings, 11 new members signed up in April and decided to meet fortnightly to networking cocktails style club.
Warwick was a commercial hub from 1930s to the 1980s. Warwick Rotary started as a lunch club then moved to dinner. They formed 4 new Rotary Clubs in our district. Stanthorpe in 1953, Goondiwindi in 1954, Allora in 1966. Warwick Sunrise in 2000. Warwick Rotary produced 2 District Governors. Wal Kieseker 1968-69. Neil in 2001-2002. A former member of Warwick Ray Brand went on to serve as DG of 9630 in 2003-2004.
"Revolutionary Change" happens when an outside influence shakes an organization, presenting a clear and urgent need for a major overhaul. This is a strategy I initiated to reinvent 3 of our smallest and oldest clubs, Allora 4 to 9, Kyogle 5 to 8 and Warwick 2 to 14, to be relevant to a 21st century lifestyles. These clubs will never be the same. Together they attracted 20 new members to Rotary in 10 months! Congratulations PDG Neil Maxwell in making Warwick Rotary relevant to today's new world. And now PDG Neil is more revolutionary than me! If Warwick, Kyogle & Allora can do it, any traditional club struggling to grow can do it. Just take a new leap or be extinct like KODAK.
SECRETS OF EFFECTIVE 21ST CENTURY LEADERSHIP SUMMIT WAS A HIT
Our amazing Assistant Governors handpicked 35 future Rotary Leaders to an interactive workshop on “Secrets of Effective 21st Century Leadership” we organised on April 17. The enthusiastic attendees were our recent RYLA and Rotaracters, and future Rotary Club and District leaders. 26 of them had been in Rotary for less than two years.
District Governor Andy has identified that training future Rotary leaders to face the 21st century leadership challenges is the highest priority in Rotary today. This Summit focussed on the “how to” aspects of leadership and the new opportunities for Rotary leadership post-COVID 19.
We discussed: Why is leadership so Important Now? What defines a great leader? A Vision needs an Action Plan, how to communicate and create ownership of a Vision and Action Plan, Successful Leadership Styles for the 21st century, and Skills that enable effective and inclusive leadership.
These topics were work-shopped using examples of good and bad practices within Rotary and organisations. And the three future leaders working groups reported the outcomes
of their discussions back to all participants. This Future Leaders Summit video will be available soon on the District 9640 U-tube Rotary Coaching site.
The success of this Future Leaders Summit is best exemplified in the exit statements of attendees such as Mark Blackadder from Grafton Midday Rotary who said “It was a fantastic opportunity for me to experience the confidence to push boundaries in my business and Rotary Club to prepare for the challenges of the 21st century”.
I’m happy to have had the opportunity to design and facilitate this ground breaking initiative by DG Andy.
