Hi girls!

Happy World Cup month everyone! Our

month break, so I will be taking over her

job.

We are so excited to organize a nail art

contest this month. Thank you very much,

bloop, for sponsoring the amazing products

for us to play with. Do flip to page 10 to

We hope you enjoy this month’s fashion

EXCLUSIVE | 7

Cai Lin Khoo, Malaysian Olympic swimmer, tells us what it is like being a national athlete representing

our country.

1. Other than huge stress, can you share with us what are

the challenges you face when representing our country at

a big game?

Other than stress, I’m afraid of failing to do well and

disappointing myself. Even though I know I've done my

best during training, sometimes when I get to the

competition venue my fears will just overcome and that's

when I have to be mentally very strong and keep telling

myself that I can do it and I will improve on my time to

win.

2. How do you feel when you are standing on the

winner’s pedestal to claim your medal for Malaysia?

I feel really proud of myself and thankful to the people who

have helped me to get where I am today. Without my

coaches, family, friends, national sports council, national

sports institute, media and my fans, I will never have made

it to the podium. Did you know…

- Swimming first became an Olympic

event in 1896.

- Swimming in the Olympics started

as a men’s event only but women

were able to participate starting in

1912.

- The oldest form of stroke used is

the breaststroke.

- The Titanic was the first ocean liner

to have a swimming pool and a gym.

3. Many people look up to you as a sport’s

icon. Who are yours?

My icons are Roland Schoeman and Natalie

du Toit both from South Africa. They have

been through a lot of hardships (especially

Natalie) and they managed to overcome all

the obstacles and are the best in the world.

4. You travel a lot for competitions. What

are your basic fashion essentials when

packing?

Haha, I don't have any basic fashion

essentials as when I travel for competitions

there's no time to go sightseeing. But I will

definitely bring along a casual dress, sandals,

and some accessories just in case I have the

time to go out.

5. Besides swimwear, what is your usual

daily outfit like?

My usual daily outfit are jeans or shorts

paired with a nice top.

6. Since it is World Cup season right now,

tell us which team do you support?

BRAZIL!!! I have always supported Brazil

since Ronaldo’s time.

Did you know…

- The slowest Olympic swim stroke is the breaststroke.

- The fastest and most efficient swim stroke is the

freestyle.

- An hour of vigorous swimming will burn up to 650

calories! It burns off more calories than walking or

biking.

- Swimming strengthens the heart and lungs, as well as

works out all of the body’s major muscles. Talk about

major exercise!

Page 12: Fczine june 2014

Step 1:

Use a base coat to protect your nails. Leave it to dry for about 2 minutes.

Step 2:

Pick your nail polish colour and use a thin coat. If the nail polish is too sheer, build the opacity by

applying two or more layers. Thick coat of nail polish takes longer time to dry. Sometimes it creates

bubbles in between the layers of the nail polish.

Step 3:

Design your own nail art by experimenting with different tools such as sponge to create a gradient

effect, dotting tools to create polka dots design or use a striping tape for various looks like colour

blocking, checked or stripes. If you run out of ideas, the easiest technique is to use a nail sticker.

Step 4:

Seal your design with a top coat.

Step 5:

To remove your nail polish, simply soak a cotton pad with nail polish remover and leave it on top of

your nails for a few seconds. Press on the cotton pad and drag the nail polish off from your nails.

Repeat until the nail polish is completely removed.

Nail Art

IdEven if you have zero experience in nail art design, creating a pretty nail

art design can be very easy with the right tools. Experiment with all the

tools provided in our fashion box and unleash your creativity!

Use a sponge to create an ombre effect

on the nails. Paint your nail polish on the

sponge and slowly dab it on your nails to

transfer the colours.

To create a heart shape, use a dotting

tool to dot two points close to each

other. Drag the nail polish down to

create a pointy end.

Use the striping tape to create a precise

straight line. To add more designs, create

polka dots with the dotting tool.

Stay Street

LADIES FIRST | 13

Being the weaker sex, women have always been a

primary target for street crime such as snatch

theft. Here are some tips on how you can prevent

that and protect yourself while on the walking on

the street. Smart 1. Remain alert at all times. Refrain from using your phone and earphones while walking in an open area. Be

mindful of your surroundings and turn your head to the back once in a while to make sure no one is following you

from behind.

2. Carry only important stuff, such as cash, phone and ID. Keep important documents and some cash with you in

the pocket just in case. Do not wear any jewellery if you are walking on the street, even if they are just costume

jewelleries.

3. Use a small wristlet to carry your belongings, instead of holding a big shoulder bag. Big bags are prone to

snatching as compared to hand-held purses. Never strap your bag across your body. That way you will be dragged

along with your bag when it is pulled away from you.

4. Avoid walking on quiet streets alone. Always travel on busy streets even if it is a longer route. Walk in the

opposite direction of the traffic, so you can see incoming vehicles in front of you.

5. Don’t walk alone on the street. Get a companion to walk with you. If you have to walk alone, never linger

around. Walk as fast as you can so you can reach your destination in a shorter time.
