Hace poco estuve viendo enla televisión un debate so-

bre el tema "Disminución deespectadores en diferentesdisciplinas deportivas". El pro-grama no trataba el tema de losperros ni del deporte canino,sino que se trataba de las disci-plinas deportivas "normales".Los participantes en el progra-ma de tertulia coincidían en queel interés por los eventos depor-tivos estaba disminuyendo engeneral y que era necesario en-contrar los caminos y mediosnecesarios para frenar esta ten-dencia a la baja. Asimismo, losparticipantes se quejaban en laemisión del programa de la fal-ta de interés de las sociedadesde televisión en los eventos de-portivos. Forman una excep-ción los grandes acontecimien-tos deportivos, como la Copadel Mundo y la Copa de Europade fútbol, las grandes competi-ciones de ciclismo, como el"Tour de France", o los grandeseventos internacionales, porejemplo en el atletismo. En la cinología, el desarrollo delos últimos años ha sido pareci-do. Muy pocas veces un organi-zador consigue atraer a un equi-po de reporteros hasta el recintode exposición, y las noticias alrespecto se suelen emitir sola-mente durante un tiempo muybreve. La pegunta que cabe ha-cerse es: ¿Acaso nuestros even-tos y actos no son suficiente-mente aptos e interesantes paralos espectadores o acaso los "noprofesionales" no reciben sufi-ciente información sobre lo quesucede en los rings? Lo mismo puede decirse del

zum Thema "Zuschauer-schwund in verschiedenenSportarten". Es ging dabei nichtum Hunde oder Hundesport,vielmehr um verschiedene"normale" Sportarten. Die Teil-nehmer der Talkshow warensich einig darüber, dass das In-teresse an den Veranstaltungengenerell nachlasse und dassWege gefunden werden müss-ten, um den Abwärtstrend zustoppen. Auch hat man sich inder Sendung über ein mangeln-des Interesse der Fernsehgesell-schaften am Sportgeschehenbeklagt. Eine Ausnahme bildendie großen Veranstaltun-gen,wie Welt- oder Europameis-terschaften, große Radrund-fahrten, wie die "Tour deFrance", oder große internatio-nale Meetings, z.B. in derLeichtathletik. In der Kynologie ist die Ent-wicklung in den letzten Jahrenähnlich. Höchst selten gelingtes einem Organisator, ein Re-porterteam ins Schaugelände zubewegen und Berichterstattun-gen sind nur während einerkurzen Sendezeit üblich. Manmuss sich fragen: Sind unsereVeranstaltungen eventuell nichtzuschauerfreundlich oder wer-den die "Nichtprofis" über dasGeschehen in den Ringen zuwenig informiert? Ähnliches gilt für das Sponso-ring. Hier besteht ein direkterZusammenhang zwischen derBerichterstattung bzw. Sende-zeit im Fernsehen oder Radiound der Bereitschaft zum Spon-soring. Zweifellos sind auch in

Il est très rare qu'unorganisateur parvienne à dépla-cer une équipe de journalistessur le terrain et les reportagessont de courte durée. Il y a lieude se poser la question : nosmanifestations ne suscitent-elles pas l'intérêt des specta-teurs ou les " non-initiés " sont-ils insuffisamment informés dece qui se passe sur le ring ? Il en est de même du sponso-ring. Il existe un lien directentre les reportages (temps dediffusion télévisée ou radiopho-nique) et le sponsoring. Sansnul doute, des mesures et desactions visant à " l'innovation "sont également nécessaires

Recently I saw a discussionon television, the subject of

which was “Dwindling num-bers of viewers in various typesof sport”. This was not aboutdogs or canine sports, but ratherabout various “normal” types ofsport. The participants in thetalk show agreed that interest insuch events was generallyslackening and that ways need-ed to be found to stop thedownward trend. There wasalso lamenting in the pro-gramme about a lack of intereston the part of television com-panies in what goes on in sport.An exception to this are majorevents, such as world cups andEuropean cups, major cyclingraces, such as the “Tour deFrance”, and major internation-al meets, such as for track-and-field sports. The developmenthas also been similar for cy-nology in recent years. Onlyvery rarely do organisers man-age to get a team of reportersinto the show grounds, and thenonly short periods of broadcasttime are usually devoted tosuch coverage. One has to askoneself: are our events possiblynot viewer-friendly, or is theextent to which “non-pros” areinformed about what goes on inthe rings insufficient?Similar considerations apply tosponsoring. Here there is adirect connection between thereporting and broadcast time ontelevision and radio, and awillingness to sponsor. Nodoubt measures and campaigns,which are nowadays describedby the term “innovation”, arealso necessary in cynology. The

participants in the televisiondiscussion mentioned at theoutset also came to the sameconclusion. Solving our prob-lem is definitely not a simplematter, and it will be necessaryto tackle the issue in a workinggroup of experts. Our aim mustbe to remain both realistic andclose to our spectators as wellas to win back lost sponsorsand to organise our events suchthat they are attractive andinteresting also for the generalpublic. Cynology has manypositive aspects to offer, andemphasising precisely that willbe a pressing task for the FCIand its member countries in thecoming years.

The anniversary year of the FCIbegins in a bit more than oneyear. This is an opportunity toreassess our actions and strivefor necessary improvements. Inall changes there might be,however, our aim must remainto breed healthy, assertive,environmentally compatiblepure-bred dogs. More weightand greater significance mustalso from now on be attached tothe selection, training and ap-pointment of our experts.

Preparations are in full swingfor the FCI anniversary eventsin 2011 (see "Official An-nouncements"). To preventoverlapping with national oc-casions, we request that datesbe reserved in good time so thatas many interested parties aspossible have the opportunity toparticipate in the attractiveevents celebrating the 100-yearanniversary of the FCI.

der Kynologie Maßnahmen undAktionen notwendig, die heut-zutage mit dem Begriff "Inno-vation" gemeint sind. Zum glei-chen Schluss kamen auch dieTeilnehmer der eingangs er-wähnten Fernseh-Diskussions-runde. Es ist bestimmt nichteinfach, unser Problem zu lösenund es ist notwendig, das The-ma in einer Arbeitsgruppe vonFachleuten anzugehen. Es mussunser Ziel sein, realistisch undpublikumsnah zu bleiben undverlorene Sponsoren zurückzu-gewinnen und unsere Veran-staltungen auch für Nichtfach-leute attraktiv und interessantzu gestalten. Die Kynologie hatviel Positives zu bieten und ge-nau das herauszustreichen ist inden nächsten Jahren eine dring-liche Aufgabe der FCI und ih-rer Mitgliedsländer.

In etwas mehr als einem Jahrbeginnt das Jubiläumsjahr derFCI. Dies ist eine Möglichkeit,unser Tun zu überdenken undnotwendige Verbesserungenanzustreben. Bei allen mögli-chen Änderungen muss es je-doch unser Ziel bleiben, gesun-de, wesensfeste und umwelt-verträgliche Rassehunde zuzüchten. Auch der Auswahl,Ausbildung und Ernennung un-serer Experten muss fortangrößeres Gewicht und mehrBedeutung beigemessen wer-den.

Die Vorbereitungen der FCI-Jubiläumsveranstaltungen imJahre 2011 (s. "Offizielle Mit-teilungen") sind in vollem Gan-ge. Um Überschneidungen mitnationalen Anlässen zu ver-meiden, bitten wir, die Terminerechtzeitig zu reservieren, da-mit möglichst viele Interessen-ten die Gelegenheit haben, anden attraktiven Veranstaltungenzum einhundertjährigen Be-stehen der FCI teilzunehmen.

Los participantes en eldebate del programa televisivomencionado al comienzo llega-ron a esta misma conclusión.Con toda seguridad no es fácilsolucionar nuestro problema, yes menester que un grupo deprofesionales estudien el temaen un grupo de trabajo. Nuestroobjetivo debe ser permanecerrealistas y cercanos al público,recuperar patrocinadores perdi-dos y concebir y diseñar nues-tros actos y eventos de manerainteresante y atractiva para losno profesionales. La cinologíatiene muchas cosas positivasque ofrecer, y para los años ve-nideros es cometido y tarea ur-gente de la FCI y de sus paísesmiembros recalcar, acentuar yponer de relieve precisamenteestas cosas positivas.

Dentro de poco más de un añocomenzará el año de aniversa-rio de la FCI. Ese año de ani-versario brindará una buenaocasión para reflexionar sobrenuestros actos y estrategias ypara ponernos como meta lasmejoras necesarias. Con todaslas modificaciones que se pue-dan producir, sin embargo,nuestro objetivo deberá seguirsiendo criar perros de raza sa-nos, de carácter equilibrado yaptos para el medio ambiente.También deberán adquirir másimportancia la elección, la for-mación y el nombramiento denuestros expertos.

Los preparativos de los eventosy actos para el aniversario de laFCI, en el año 2011 (véase"Comunicados oficiales"), yaestán plenamente en marcha.Para evitar coincidencias conotros actos y eventos naciona-les, rogamos reserven los pla-zos y las fechas a tiempo, a finde que muchos interesadostengan la oportunidad de par-ticipar en los atractivos eventosdel aniversario de la FCI.

Il n'est as-surément pas facile de résoudrenotre problème et il serait né-cessaire d'aborder ce thèmedans le cadre d'un groupe detravail composé de spécialistes.Notre but doit consister à resterréalistes et proches du public, àreconquérir des sponsors per-dus et à rendre nos manifesta-tions attrayantes et intéres-santes également pour lesprophanes. La cynologie abeaucoup à offrir et mettre sesatouts en valeur au cours desprochaines années est précisé-ment une mission urgente de laFCI et de ses membres.

L'année du centenaire de la FCIcommencera dans un peu plusd'un an. Il s'agit pour nousd'une occasion de repenser nosactes et d'apporter les améliora-tions nécessaires. Au cœur detous ces changements, notre butdoit cependant toujours demeu-rer l'élevage de chiens de raceen bonne santé, sociables et autempérament équilibré. A l'ave-nir, nous devons également in-sister et attacher plus d'impor-tance au choix, à la formationet à la nomination de nos juges.

Les préparatifs des festivités ducentenaire de la FCI en 2011(voir " nouvelles officielles ")battent leur plein. Afin d'éviterdes chevauchements avec desévénements nationaux, nousvous demandons de prendrenote des dates en temps utilesafin de permettre à un grandnombre de personnes intéres-sées de participer aux manifes-tations intéressantes du cen-tième anniversaire de la FCI.

It was hot, sunny weather (un-usual for this time of year)

when Dublin received the ex-hibitors at the 2009 EuropeanDog Show. It is a pity that theregistration figures didn't cor-respond to the expected num-ber. Just over 4,000 dogs wereregistered: 6,000 or 7,000would have been nearer to theorganisers' expectations. Per-haps the economic crisis para-lysed some people, or maybe itwas the idea of having to crossthe sea. Whatever: for Irelandand the local exhibitors, it wasthe biggest show ever to bestaged on Irish soil.

The show terrain of the RoyalDublin Society in Ballsridgeprovided a pleasant setting. Anappealing ambience, quality ex-hibitors, the traditional out-standing hospitality of the Irishand a tad of that famed Irishluck: all that merged to becomea show with an overridinglypositive mood. There was a great diversity ofbreeds, which meant that someof the breeds were shown inIreland for the very first time.

La crise économique en apeut-être dissuadé certains - oupeut-être était-ce l'idée de de-voir traverser la mer. Pourtant,pour l'Irlande et les exposantsnationaux, il s'agissait de laplus grande exposition de tousles temps sur le sol irlandais.

Les halls de la Royal DublinSociety à Ballsridge éaient trèsagréables. Ambiance de char-me, exposants de qualité, hospi-talité chaleureuse traditionnelledes Irlandais et un soupçon dechance irlandaise … tous ceséléments conjugués ont contri-bué à faire de cette expositionune manifestation agréable. Vu la grande variété de races,certaines d'entre elles étaient vi-sibles pour la première fois enIrlande, ce qui aurait dû susciterl'intérêt des visiteurs. Pourtant,le soleil a attiré nombre d'entreeux plutôt vers la plage qu'à l'exposition canine.

Das Ausstellungsgelände derRoyal Dublin Society in Balls-ridge bot einen angenehmenRahmen. Ein ansprechendesAmbiente, qualitätsvolle Aus-steller, die traditionell überra-gende Gastfreundschaft derIren und ein Hauch des irischenGlücks … all das verschmolzzu einer von positiver Stim-mung geprägten Ausstellung. Es gab eine sehr große Ras-senvielfalt, was dazu führte,dass einige Rassen zum erstenMal überhaupt in Irland gezeigtwurden. Eigentlich sollte dieserUmstand das Besucherinteresseauf sich ziehen. This fact should really have at-tracted visitors' interests. In-stead, however, it appears thatthe beautiful weather mademany go to the beach instead ofvisiting the dog show. The panel of judges was madeup of prominent FCI and Brit-ish judges. Although the regis-tration figures were low, thequality of many of the breeds ofthe dogs shown was excellent. Noteworthy is the number ofexhibitors who came by coachfrom Russia. The number ofRussian exhibitors (265) almostequalled the number of North-ern Irish exhibitors (298). Thefurthest distances travelledwere by one exhibitor fromThailand, 11 exhibitors fromthe USA and one exhibitorfrom Canada.

As part of a special ceremony,the English Kennel Club signeda historic agreement with theFédération Cynologique Inter-nationale (FCI). The agreementsays that both organisations fol-low, promote and protect com-mon objectives. In the case ofthe FCI, this concerns pedigreedogs, in the case of the KennelClub, it means all dogs.

At the end of the dog show, thepresident of the Irish KennelClub, Sean Delmar, had thehonour of judging the Best inShow. It was a challenge for him toplace all the high-quality dogs.His vote finally went to the six-year-old, wire-haired terrierbitch "Ch. Blackdale Carousel"that delighted in the ring withher feminine charisma andgreat presence. Sean Delmar:"Whenever I approached her,

Lors d'une cérémonie spéci-fique, le Kennel Club a signéun accord historique avec laFédération Cynologique Inter-nationale (FCI). Ce dernier sti-pule que les deux organisationspoursuivent, encouragent etprotègent des objectifs com-muns. Dans le cas de la FCI, ils'agit des chiens de race, pourle Kennel Club de tous leschiens.

Au terme de l'exposition, c'estau président de l'organisationcanine irlandaise, Sean Delmar,qu'est revenu l'honneur de jugerle Best in Show.Classer tous ces excellents chi-ens fut un défi pour Mr Delmar.Il a porté son choix sur le fox-terrier femelle à poil dur " Ch.Blackdale Carousel ", âgée desix ans, dont la féminité et laprésence sur le ring se sontrévélées décisives. DieZahl der russischen Aussteller(265) lag fast so hoch wie dieder Nordiren (298). Die weites-ten Anreisen hatten ein Aus-steller aus Thailand, elf Aus-steller aus den USA und eineraus Kanada.

Im Rahmen einer speziellenZeremonie unterzeichneten derEnglish Kennel Club ein his-torisches Abkommen mit derFédération Cynologique Inter-nationale (FCI). Die Überein-kunft besagt, dass beide Or-ganisationen gemeinsame Zieleverfolgen, fördern und schütz-en. Im Fall der FCI sind diesRassehunde, im Fall des Ken-nel Clubs alle Hunde.

En el marco de una ceremoniaespecial, el English KennelClub firmó un acuerdo históricocon la Federation CynologiqueInternationale (FCI). Esteacuerdo expone que ambasorganizaciones persiguen, pro-mocionan y protegen objetivoscomunes. En el caso de la FCIse trata de los perros de raza, enel caso del Kennel Club de to-dos los perros.

Al finalizar la exposición cani-na, el Presidente del KennelClub irlandés, don Sean Del-mar, asumió la honorable tareade juzgar al Best in Show.Fue un verdadero reto para élcalificar a todos esos perros dealto nivel. Food allergy is only a minorpossible cause of skin dis-

eases. On top of that it rarelyhappens that the cause of the al-lergy is thoroughly investiga-ted. The reason is the time-con-suming and expensive treat-ment. Could it be that in a lot ofallergy cases we are confrontedwith "Food Adverse Reaction"more than with "Food Allergy"(see table)? Therefore it's ofgreat importance, in case of areal food allergy, to find outwhere the allergy comes from.

The occurrence of food allergyis certainly overestimated as itrepresents only 1% of allcauses of skin disease with catsand dogs.

2/3 of dogs with skin diseaseare fed with beef, dairy prod-ucts or wheat gluten.

25% of reported food allergieswere also linked to chicken,chicken eggs, lamb or soya. Al-lergy with dogs was only rarelylinked to corn, pig, rice or fish.

El Dr. Wolfgang Zörner, Pre-sidente de la Organización In-ternacional de Perros de Res-cate, declaró el domingo des-pués del homenaje a los gana-dores que en este campeonatomundial había habido otra unmayor número de rendimientosaltos. Los resultados en parte sediferenciaban por muy pocoentre sí y, a pesar del tiempocaluroso y bochornoso, se pu-dieron ver muchos perros reali-zando un trabajo muy bueno.

Para el Presidente de la IRO, uncampeonato mundial de perrosde rescate es una fase interme-dia alta, que sirve para compro-bar la eficacia para los casosreales, pues sólo los mejoresperros de rescate pasan laspruebas para, después, interve-nir de verdad en catástrofes in-ternacionales buscando per-sonas desaparecidas. Zörner:“Un campeonato mundial cor-responde aproximadamente al60 por ciento del volumen derendimiento que exigimos a loscanes en una intervención realde rescate.”

En total, en el campeonatomundial en Craiova/Rumaniaparticiparon 120 ayudantesvoluntarios en la organización.Y 200 policías se encargaron deque el evento transcurriera sinproblemas. En el campeonatomundial participaron 76 equi-pos de perros de 13 naciones.

Wolfgang Zörner, président del’Organisation Internationaledes chiens de sauvetage (IRO),a déclaré dimanche, après laremise des médailles, que lesprestations avaient été encoreplus pointues cette année. Lesrésultats furent parfois extrême-ment serrés et, malgré le tempschaud et lourd, de nombreuxchiens ont accompli un excel-lent travail.

Pour le président de l’IRO, unchampionnat du monde pourchiens de sauvetage représenteune étape intermédiaire de hautniveau avant le test d’interven-tion que seule l’élite des chiensde sauvetage passe avec succèsafin de rechercher des per-sonnes disparues lors degrandes catastrophes dans le ca-dre de missions internationales.Zörner: « Un championnat dumonde représente environ 60pour cent du volume de travailque les chiens doivent réaliserlors d’une intervention. »

Au total, 120 volontaires ontaidé les organisateurs durant lechampionnat du monde. 200agents de police supplémen-taires ont veillé à ce que lacompétition se déroule sansproblèmes. 76 équipes de 13nations ont participé à la mani-festation.

After the victory ceremony onthe Sunday, Dr Wolfgang Zör-ner, president of the IRO Inter-national Rescue Dogs Organi-sation, stated that the diffe-rences between quality and per-formance had grown even nar-rower at this world champion-ship. The results were in placesextremely close and despite thehot and humid weather therewere a lot of very hard workingdogs on show.

For the IRO president this kindof Rescue Dogs World Cham-pionship, which only the best ofthe best can win, represents aprecursory test stage for thedogs to be used to search formissing persons in internationaldisaster areas. Zörner: “Aworld championship demandsabout 60% of the volume ofperformance which we wouldexpect from a dog on duty.”

Altogether there were 120 vo-lunteer helpers involved in theorganisation at the world cham-pionship in Craiova, Romania.A further 200 police officersensured that everything wentsmoothly. 76 teams of dogsfrom 13 nations took part in theworld championship.

Eberhard Strasser, presidentof the FCI Working and Res-cue Dog Commission, died on29 June 2009 at the age of 69.

Despite being seriously ill, hewas always committed to dogsport until right before his pass-ing away. While he defendedhis views with passion and con-vincing arguments, he neverfailed to listen to other people'sopinions and was always readyto reach a compromise.

In his ten years as president ofthe FCI Working Dog Commis-sion, Eberhard accomplished alot in concert with his col-leagues. His contribution to apositive development in the in-ternational working and rescuedog sport is substantial.

As a working judge he was aparagon. His professionalismand enthusiasm for the sport isa precious gift to the cynologi-cal world. Eberhard was - andthis is the way we will alwaysremember him - a great humanbeing, an important trailblazerfor dog sport and also a goodfriend.

Anyone who, like Eberhard,lives on in the thoughts of hisloved ones and friends is notdead. Only the forgotten onesare truly gone.

Our sympathies go to his wife,Claudia, his children and hisfamily.

Durant ses 10 années à la prési-dence de la commission pourchiens d'utilité de la FCI, Eber-hard a atteint de très nombreuxobjectifs avec la collaborationde ses collègues et il a ample-ment contribué à l'évolution po-sitive du sport internationalpour les chiens d'utilité et desauvetage.

En tant que juge de travail, ilétait considéré comme un ex-emple et son professionnalismeainsi que son enthousiasmepour le sport étaient des atoutsconsidérables pour le mondecynologique. Eberhard était - ettel est le souvenir que nous gar-derons de lui - une personnalitégrandiose, un pionnier impor-tant du sport canin et un amiprécieux.

Celui qui, tout comme Eber-hard, continue de vivre dans lespensées de ses proches et amis,n'est pas mort. Seuls meurentceux qui sombrent dans l'oubli. Nous exprimons notre profondesympathie et nos sincères con-doléances à son épouse Clau-dia, à ses enfants et à sa famil-le.

Durante su presidencia en laComisión de Perros de Utilidady Rescate de la FCI, que duródiez años, Eberhard consiguiómuchas cosas colaborando consus compañeros, y contribuyóen medida importante al desa-rrollo positivo a nivel interna-cional de la disciplina deportivacanina de los perros de utilidady rescate.Como juez de trabajo fue unverdadero ejemplo a seguir, ysu profesionalidad y entusias-mo por el deporte fueron unauténtico regalo para el mundode la cinología. Eberhard erauna persona extraordinaria, unpionero del deporte canino ytambién un buen amigo - ysiempre lo recordaremos así. Eberhard hat in seiner zehn-jährigen Präsidentschaft derFCI Gebrauchshunde-Kommis-sion in Zusammenarbeit mitseinen Kollegen sehr viel er-reicht und in großem Maße zueiner positiven Entwicklung iminternationalen Gebrauchs- undRettungshundesport beigetra-gen.

Als Leistungsrichter war er einVorbild und seine Professiona-lität und Begeisterung für denSport war ein Geschenk für diekynologische Welt. Eberhardwar - und so werden wir unsimmer an ihn errinnern - eingroßartiger Mensch, ein wichti-ger Vorkämpfer für den Hunde-sport und auch ein guterFreund.

Die Übungen 1 und 2 derObedience-Prüfungsordnungsind Sitzen (2 Minuten) undLiegen (4 Minuten) in derGruppe mit dem Hundeführeraußer Sicht. Die Kehrtwendungenmüssen auf derselben Liniebleiben, die Wendungen rechtsund links haben im 90 °-Winkelzu erfolgen.. Dabei muss sichder Hund gleichzeitig mit demHundeführer drehen. Auchsollte er gerade neben demHundeführer gehen, nicht be-drängen und mit dem linkenKnie nicht andauernd korrigiertwerden müssen.Die Freifolge muss dem Hundschmackhaft gemacht werden.Es darf keinesfalls zu langetrainiert werden und dem Hundsollte es nie langweilig werden.Im Training werden alle zweibis drei Schritte das Wenden,das Anhalten und das Anhaltenin der Wendung geübt. Wennmit Leine geübt wird, ist es rat-sam, nicht ständig am Hund he-rumzuzupfen und nicht unun-terbrochen auf ihn einzureden.Die Folge wäre, dass der Hundseinen Hundeführer bald nichtmehr wahrnimmt. Im Traininggenügt es, einmal das Kom-mando "Fuß" zu geben. Stehtder Hundeführer, soll der Hundsitzen, geht oder läuft er, hat eran der linken Seite zu sein, sei-ne Schulter beim linken Knie.

Asimismo debeestar en posición paralela alguía y no echársele encima, ytampoco debe tener que corre-girse constantemente al can conla rodilla izquierda.Se debe incentivar al perro paraque le guste la secuencia libre.En ningún caso se debe entre-nar demasiado rato, y el perrojamás debe llegar al aburri-miento. En el entrenamiento,cada dos o tres pasos se ejer-citan el cambio de dirección,estar parado y estar paradodurante el cambio de dirección.Si se practica con la correa, serecomienda no tirar constan-temente de ella y no estar incor-diando al perro todo el rato conla voz. Did you know that thehuman body has 1014 cells

(one hundred thousand billion),but that only 10% of these cellsare part of the actual body andmake up the different organs(i.e. liver) and tissues (i.e.muscle), and that 90% areactually bacteria. We can allfind bacteria living on our skinwithout any problems, and themajority are found sitting quitehappily in the small and largeintestine. While we do notknow the equivalent bacterialnumbers in dogs what we doknow is that the gut bacteriaare very important for theirhealth; 1) good bacteria such asLactobacilli help exclude badbacteria, such as Salmonella,from becoming resident in thegut. 2) good bacteria can break-down fibres and help feed thecells lining the gut, and 3) good bacteria help synthe-sise vitamins in the gut. For the very first time, theAsian section show was or-

ganised outside of Japan. TheKennel Club of Taiwan hostedthe event on 28 June.In their spacious halls at theTaipei County Exhibition Hall,large rings invited the exhibi-tors to present their dogs. Andthe registration figures werejust as good. Over 800 dogswere presented to the inter-national panel of judges. Spe-cialists from seven countriesjudged the mainly standard-compliant and top-groomeddogs.

It must be emphasised that thisattractive and excellently orga-nised show complied with theFCI show regulations. This isthe first time this had happenedin Taiwan, which has closecontact with the AKC. All themore remarkable are the regis-tration figures which, due toquarantine formalities, consist-ed mainly of domestic dogs.

It was further unusual for Asiathat dachshunds accounted formost registrations (81). Thiswas followed by Golden Re-trievers (79) and toy poodles(78).

El 28 dejunio, el anfitrión fue el KennelClub de Taiwán.En los espaciosos pabellonesdel Taipeh Conty ExhibitionHall, los grandes rings invita-ban a los expositores a presen-tar a sus canes. Y la cifra deinscripciones fue bastante bu-ena. Más de 800 perros se pre-sentaron ante el gremio de jue-ces. Especialistas de siete paí-ses juzgaron a los perros, en sumayoría conformes a los están-dares y perfectamente cuidados.

Cabe destacar que esta exposi-ción, atractiva y excelentemen-te organizada, se atuvo a losreglamentos para exposicionesde la FCI. Fue la primera vezque esto ocurría en Taiwán, quees un país que mantiene unasrelaciones muy estrechas con elAKC. Por eso la cifra de ins-cripciones es especialmentenotable, pues debido a la cua-rentena, la mayor parte de losperros inscritos fueron naciona-les.

Para Asia también fue extraor-dinario el hecho de que lamayoría de las inscripcionesfueran de Teckels (81). Segui-dos por Golden Retrievers (79)y Caniches Toy (78).

Reisinger from Aus-tria.Mr Natividad from the Philip-pines judged Group 9, andawarded the white toy poodle,Smash JP Three Belle Jackpot,first place. This exceptionaldog then also went on to winthe "King" title as the best maledog. Many FCI functionariesare familiar with him from theEukanuba World Challenge.Andrew Brace also awardedhim top dog in Long Beach.

In the statement, BIS judgeKarl P. Reisinger enthusedabout this dog: "When he wonGroup 9, I knew that he was aserious contender for the title.In the detailed judging, he im-pressed with his excellent ana-tomical structure, his excep-tional appearance and the "starappeal" that characterises thewinning dog. You could feelthat he wanted to win. Thenthere was his perfect haircut.What ultimately did it, how-ever, was the rating of hismovements. Dynamic, withdrive from the hindquarters,distinct ability to look ahead,excellent balance with an al-most calm upper line. It was his movements which ul-timately won him the overallcompetition and the title of BISahead of a charming Maltesebitch that, as the best bitch, hadwon the "Queen" title.

Die Veranstaltung war einegute Gelegenheit zur internatio-nalen Kontaktpflege. Vertreteraus nahezu allen asiatischenund pazifischen Mitgliedsorga-nisationen der FCI waren ver-treten. Die einzigartige Gast-freundschaft des Veranstalterszauberte diese typische asiati-sche "Wohlfühlatmosphäre",die Gespräche so positiv gestal-ten hilft.

El movimiento fue el factor de-cisivo también para la victoriageneral y el título BIS de unaencantadora perra Maltés, queanteriormente había obtenido eltítulo de "Queen" como mejorhembra.

The event was a great chance tomaintain international contacts.Representatives of almost allAsian and Pacific member or-ganisations of the FCI werethere. The unique hospitality ofthe organiser conjured up thistypical Asian "atmosphere ofwell-being" which is so essen-tial to positive discussions.

The presidents of the KennelClubs of Australia, Mr Gent,and of New Zealand, Mr Per-fect, took advantage of thechance to discuss unansweredquestions with FCI vice presi-dent Reisinger. It turned outeasier to clarify and to under-stand a great deal face to facethan in writing. Improved mu-tual comprehension helps tocome up with solutions whichcomply with all viewpoints.

The section meeting called byMr Nagamura also went offharmoniously. There was afeeling of loyalty and friend-ship perceptible at the eveningevents. Witty speeches, finefood and drink were the reasonwhy it was only with reluctancethat many retired to their luxu-rious rooms to regain theirstrength for the next day.

We would like to congratulatethe Kennel Club of Taiwan forstaging a successful, perfectlyorganised section show. Thai-land will be hosting the eventnext year. A further reason tolook forward!

Contrairement aux échan-ges de courriers, le fait de separler de vive voix permet d'ex-pliquer et de comprendre beau-coup plus facilement de nom-breux points. Le fait de se com-prendre mutuellement permetde trouver des solutions qui ré-pondent aux souhaits de tous.

La réunion de section, convo-quée par Mr. Nagamura, s'estdéroulée dans une ambiancechaleureuse. Les programmesprévus en soirée furent égale-ment empreints de respect etd'amitié. Discours amusants,mets raffinés et boissons dequalité expliquent pourquoicertains ont regagné leur cham-bre avec réticence afin de re-prendre des forces pour lajournée suivante.

Il convient de féliciter le Ken-nel Club de Taïwan pour cetteexposition de section réussie etorganisée de main de maître. LaThaïlande accueillera l'expositi-on l'an prochain. Nous nous enréjouissons à l'avance.

Die Präsidenten der KennelClubs von Australien, Mr.Gent, und von Neuseeland, Mr.Perfect, nützten die Gelegen-heit, mit dem FCI-Vizepräsi-denten Reisinger offene Fragenzu erörtern. Und es zeigte sich,dass im Gespräch vieles leich-ter zu erklären und zu verstehenist, als in schriftlicher Form.Ein besseres gegenseitiges Ver-ständnis hilft, Lösungen zu fin-den, die allen Vorstellungen ge-recht werden.

Die von Mr. Nagamura einbe-rufene Sektionssitzung verliefebenfalls harmonisch. Und beiden Abendveranstaltungen wareine Atmosphäre von Kollegia-lität und Freundschaft zu spü-ren. Launige Reden, feine Spei-sen und Getränke waren derGrund, warum manche nur un-gern die luxuriösen Zimmeraufsuchten, um Kraft für dennächsten Tag zu sammeln.

Dem Kennel Club of Taiwandarf zu einer gelungenen, best-organisierten Sektionsausstel-lung gratuliert werden. Nächs-tes Jahr ist Thailand Gastgeber-land. Ein Grund, sich ebenfallsdarauf zu freuen.

La comprensión mutuamejor ayuda a encontrar solu-ciones que sean justas para to-dos.

La reunión de sección, convo-cada por el señor Nagamura,asimismo se desarrolló y trans-currió en perfecta armonía. Yen los actos por las noches sepodía percibir claramente unambiente amistoso y de com-pañerismo. Los discursos jovia-les y llenos de buen humor, losplatos y las bebidas exquisitosfueron el motivo por el que amás de uno le costó dejar lareunió e ir a las lujosas habita-ciones para dormir y tomarfuerzas para el día siguiente.

Felicitamos al Kennel Club deTaiwán por la exposición desección tan bien organizada ytan lograda. El año que viene,el país anfitrión será Tailandia.Otro motivo más de alegre ex-pectativa.

The Hungarian CynologicalAssociation - Magyar Ebte-nyésztök orszàgos Egyesülete(MEOE) - was founded on 29October 1899, and this yearcelebrates its 110th anniversary.

The beginnings of Hungariancynology go back as far as themiddle of the 19th century.Having been inspired by othercountries, the first dog showwas organised in Budapest in1885 with 125 dogs taking part.This show gave rise to the ideathat founding a national kennelclub should be a matter for con-sideration. Finally, 14 yearslater, on 29 October 1899, 62people signed the foundationcharter of the national asso-ciation and thus the HungarianCynological Association(MEOE) was founded.

It wasin this year that the FCI wasfounded and that the MET, theHungarian breeding register,was brought into being by theMEOE.Even during the First WorldWar Hungarian cynology wasstill functioning. In the thirdyear of the World War, in 1916,the first issue of the asso-ciation's magazine "a kutya"(The Dog) was published and itis still being published underthat name today. In the interwar years, theMEOE developed steadily. Theassociation's activities flour-ished, dog shows were held ona regular basis, and the numberof members grew to 3,000. Oneimportant event at this time wasthe renewal of the FCI mem-bership which had been lostduring the First World War.The MEOE once again becamea full member of the FCI. Theassociation continued to flour-ish until 1944. The MEOE dis-continued its activities duringthe Second World War andNational Socialism.

Life after the war began in anew office. A new generationtook over the leadership and,thanks to their dedication, thefunctionaries managed to getthe MEOE accepted as a mem-ber once again by the FCI in1962 on the occasion of thegeneral meeting in Helsinki.In the 1960s, the regular andfurther cynological training forjudges got going and, on 1 July1966, the association's maga-zine resumed publication. Amajor event for this dynamical-ly developing association wasthe World Hunting Exhibitionin 1971 within the frameworkof which a four-day dog showwas organised. It was at this

Le Championnat duMonde de Chasse, en 1971,organisé dans le cadre d’uneexposition canine internationalede quatre jours, fut une dateimportante pour la dynamiqueorganisation hongroise. Lors dece Championnat auquel ontparticipé 3800 chiens, le juryinternational a décerné pour lapremière fois le « titre dechampion du monde » à 226chiens.

In der Zwischenkriegszeit ent-faltete sich der MEOE. Das Ve-reinsleben blühte, regelmäßigwurden Hundeausstellungen or-ganisiert, die Zahl der Mitglie-der stieg auf 3000. Ein wich-tiges Ereignis für den MEOE indieser Zeit war die Erneuerungder FCI Mitgliedschaft, diewährend des ersten Weltkriegesverloren gegangen war. DerMEOE wurde wieder Voll-mitglied der FCI. Die Blütezeitdes Verbandes dauerte bis1944. Mit dem zweiten Welt-krieg und dem Nationalsozia-lismus stellte der MEOE seineTätigkeit ein.

Das Leben nach dem Krieg be-gann in einem neuen Büro. Ei-ne neue Generation übernahmdie Führung und durch das En-gagement erreichten die Funk-tionäre, dass der MEOE 1962von der FCI, anlässlich der Ge-neralversammlung in Helsinkiwieder als Mitglied aufgenom-men wurde.In den 60er Jahren begann dieregelmäßige kynologischeRichteraus- und weiterbildungund am 1. Juli 1966 wurde auchdie Verbandszeitschrift wiederherausgegeben. Ein Großereig-nis für den sich dynamisch ent-wickelnden Verband war dieWeltausstellung für Jagd imJahre 1971, in deren Rahmeneine viertägige internationaleHundeausstellung organisiertwurde. An dieser Veranstal-tung, nahmen 3800 Hunde teil.Erstmals erhielten 226 Hundevon der internationalen Juryden "Weltsiegertitel" .

event, with 3,800 dogs partici-pating, that the internationaljury awarded the "WorldChampion Title" to 226 of themfor the first time. The 1970s opened up new pros-pects for the MEOE. In 1974the association moved out of itsrented offices into its own mul-ti-storeyed building. Hungariancynology was more popularthan ever before, with member-ship figures reaching 24,000.Recognition for the associationfrom abroad was soon to fol-low. Between 1970 and 1978the former president Pál Sár-kány became first the FCI vice-president and later president ofthe FCI.

Unfortunately, the years of per-sonal intrigue behind the scenesseriously affected the stabilityof the association. At the end ofthe decade the MEOE fell intoanarchy and this resulted inmeasures being taken by thestate. After these measures hadtaken effect, order was againestablished in the association. The general assembly of 1990elected Dr Tibor Bródy pre-sident. The national and inter-national prestige enjoyed by thenew president and his balancedand peacemaking work broughtwith it many advantages. In 1992, Dr Zsolt Várszegi waselected national president. Heintensified the national and in-ternational connections of theMEOE and, as a cynologist,contributed greatly to the asso-ciation's stability.

The FCI European Show whichwas held in Budapest in 1993and the FCI World Show heldtogether with the AustrianCynological Association in1996 were enormous successesfor the MEOE.

En 1992, Zsolt Várszegi a étéélu président . Il a intensifié lesrelations nationales et interna-tionales du MEOE et contribué,en tant que cynologue, à unegrande stabilité au sein de l’as-sociation.

Dieungarische Kynologie war po-pulär wie nie zuvor, die Mit-gliederzahl lag bei 24.000 Per-sonen. Auch die ausländischeAnerkennung des Verbandesließ nicht lange auf sich warten.Zwischen 1970 und 1978 warder damalige Präsident PálSárkány vorerst FCI-Vizeprä-sident und später Präsident derFCI.

Leider haben die jahrelangenpersönlichen Intrigen im Hin-tergrund die Stabilität des Ve-reins angegriffen. Der MEOEgeriet am Ende des Jahrzehntesin eine Anarchie, deren Folgestaatliche Maßnahmen waren.Nach diesen Maßnahmen kehr-te wieder Ordnung in den Ver-band zurück. Die Generalversammlung von1990 wählte Dr. Tibor Bródyzum Präsidenten. Das nationaleund internationale Ansehen, dasder neue Präsident genoss undseine ausgeglichene und frie-densstiftende Arbeit brachtenviele Vorteile. 1992 wurde Dr. Zsolt Várszegizum Landespräsidenten ge-wählt. Er intensivierte die na-tionalen und internationalenBeziehungen des MEOE undtrug auch als Kynologe viel zurStabilität des Vereins bei.

El prestigio na-cional e internacional de quegozaba el nuevo Presidente y sutrabajo ecuánime y conciliadoraportaron muchos beneficios. This success was continuedwhen, in 2008, they put on thelargest European dog show inthe history of the FCI. Therewere about 15,000 dogs regis-tered - together with the accom-panying events, 25,000 dogswere judged during the three-day event. An outstanding suc-cess for the MEOE.

In 2008 András Korózs, thepresident of the MEOE, and theMEOE national executive com-mittee were finally able to putan end to a conflict which hadbeen going on for more than 10years between the Hungariancourts and the Hungarian agri-cultural ministry. This meantthat the "Hungarian conflict sit-uation", which had often beendiscussed in the FCI generalmeeting, was over.

Today the MEOE has morethan 12,000 members, 49 breedclubs and 73 regional associa-tions. The breed clubs put onspecial shows every year, theregional associations hold 12-13 CAC national shows on arotation principle. This year, 10CACIB exhibitions are beingorganised by the MEOE.20,000 issues of the official as-sociation's magazine "a kutya"(The Dog) are published everymonth.At the beginning breedingstarted with 19 breeds. Today,the number of breeds actuallyregistered in the stud book hasreached 280. At theFCI World Show in 2006 inPoznan three Hungarian dogswere named as winners in theirbreed groups and from 25,000dogs it was a Hungarian dogwhich won the Res BIS title.

Hungary has nine nationalbreeds. These breeds can bedivided into two main groups:

herding and driving breeds, andhunting dogs. The Komondor and Kuvasz areherding dogs; the smaller dogs- Puli, Pumi and Mudi - aredriving dogs. The hunting dogs are the Hun-garian Short-haired PointingDog (Rövidszörü Magyar Viz-sla), the Hungarian WirehairedPointing Dog (Drotzörü Mag-yar Vizsla), the TransylvanianHound (Erdély Kopó) and theHungarian Greyhound (MagyarAgar).

Hungary is a small country butcynologically it is highly re-garded. The national breeds arefamous and, in some countries,exceptionally popular. The MEOE has a past and Ibelieve we also have a future ininternational cynology. Afterour successful 2008 FCI Euro-pean Dog Show, we have highhopes of being able to host the2013 FCI World Show.

Der MEOE hat eine Ver-gangenheit und ich denke, wirhaben auch eine Zukunft in derinternationalen Kynologie.Nach unserer erfolgreichen FCIEuropa Hundeausstellung 2008bewerben wir uns mit großenErwartungen um die Ausrich-tung der FCI Weltausstellung2013.
