• Olaroiu said: "I am very upset because my players did not show the necessary commitment today - the tempo wastoo slow and we were too predictable. I am especially upset because I told them Pandurii are a highly motivated andvery ambitious team, so we should have been prepared."

• Steaua's run of not winning any of their domestic matches immediately following UEFA Champions League group-stagefixtures continued on 5 November as they were held 0-0 at FC Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt, with Cernea making two superbsaves to ensure a point for the visitors.

• Despite the win Anatoli Demianenko said: "I was very unhappy with the first half. We had lots of chances but allof the things I said to the players about the counterattacking skills of our opponents were ignored. In the second halfwe scored quickly and it became easier to play. The need to get a result every time adds to the pressure and it ishard for the boys to give 100 per cent in every match."

• Rebrov will miss the trip to Romania after picking up a knock against Arsenal, while Mikhalik is also a doubt afterbeing carried off with an ankle injury. "Rebrov is out for two or three weeks and I can't say anything definite aboutMikhalik," said Demianenko. "His ankle is swollen and he needs to undergo tests."

• Five days after their UEFA Champions League challenge ended at Lyon, Dynamo set themselves up to return tothe competition next year with a 1-0 defeat of arch-rivals Shakhtar. Dynamo were three points ahead at kick-off andthat doubled when substitute Belkevich set up Shatskikh to volley the only goal inside the final 20 minutes.

• Demianenko opted for a 4-4-2 formation and held it until Milevskiy was dismissed for a second booking just pastthe hour. Shakhtar had already lost defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy and coach Mircea Lucescu to red cards just beforehalf-time and Darijo Srna was sent off after the final whistle.

• Demianenko said: "Today I am proud of my team as they managed to score the winning goal while playing with tenagainst ten. We deserved to win. When we scored we dropped back because it was tough and the boys wanted tokeep the lead. But we still had some nice attacking moves that we could not finish off."

• On 11 November, Dynamo's lead over Shakhtar was reduced to four points as they were held 1-1 at mid-table FCKarpaty Lviv. Shatskikh scored his fifth goal of the season as he headed in a cross from Rebrov on the half-hourbut the hosts equalised late on through Batista.

• Regular forwards Kleber and Milevskiy were left out so Shatskikh was deployed as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 formationwith Mikhalik, Rebrov and Yussuf in central midfield. Carlos Corrêa was rested and Gusev was taken off early inthe second period for the same reason.

• Demianenko said: "It was a tough match, while we were still tired after beating Shakhtar. We were not brilliant butthere was a reason for that. Our team has a very tight schedule. We also have certain problems with psychology.Myself and the players have some issues to talk through after this."

• With Shovkovskiy in mixed form, Dynamo have now lost their No2 goalkeeper Rybka to a broken nose, concussionand facial cuts which required stitches suffered while playing in the first division for Dynamo's reserve side againstFC CSKA Kyiv. Rybka was caught in the face with a stray boot for an opponents and the goalkeeper was actuallysent off for his retaliation.

• Rybka, who also sustained concussion against Madrid earlier in the group stage, is expected to be out until the endof the year through injury but has also been banned for the rest of the season, though Dynamo have launched anappeal. CSKA coach Yuriy Maxymov received a similar suspension.

• Milevskiy was involved in a car accident while driving to club's training ground last week. "I was hurrying to morningtraining when I collided with another car and my car got thrown to the side of the road," said 21-year-old who sufferedonly minor injuries. He was in training the next day and is fully fit to play against Steaua.

• Shatskikh helped Uzbekistan to qualify for the next year's AFC Asian Cup finals in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailandand Vietnam as the former Soviet republic defeated Group F winners Qatar 2-0 to secure second place in the sectionahead of Hong Kong. However Shatskikh himself was sent off on the hour together with Qatar defender WesamAbdulmajid with his team already two up.

• Marković played 45 minutes for Serbia in their 1-1 friendly draw against Norway last Wednesday but fellow Dynamodefender Goran Gavrančić was omitted once again by Javier Clemente.

• Defender David Imedashvili, who was called up to the Georgia squad for a friendly against Uruguay, did not makeit on to the bench. Striker Otar Martsvaladze also missed the 2-0 win through injury.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones

Olympique Lyonnais are on target for a record-breaking conclusion to their group-stage campaign in advance of theirMatchday 5 trip to Real Madrid CF. They are two wins away from becoming only the fifth team – and the first sinceFC Barcelona in 2002/03 – to win all six games in a group stage. The first to manage it were AC Milan in the inaugural1992/93 edition of the UEFA Champions League. Since then Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95) and FC SpartakMoskva (1995/96) have matched the achievement, before that Barça success in the last season before the competitionwas revamped into its current format.

Unwanted recordBarcelona are not having such an easy ride this time around. A draw or defeat for the title-holders at PFC Levski Sofiaand a Werder Bremen victory over Chelsea FC would make the Camp Nou side the first defending champions to failto get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes thefour seasons that featured a second group stage between 1999/00 and 2002/03.)

Clean sheetsLyon are also going for another UEFA Champions League first. No team has negotiated a group stage withoutconceding a goal but Lyon, along with FC Bayern München and PFC CSKA Moskva, could yet change that havingmanaged four clean sheets to date. In contrast FC Dynamo Kyiv and Levski Sofia have both shipped 13 goals in theirfirst four outings this term, just six short of the record number let in by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign.

Shot shyFor all their defensive solidity, CSKA have only scored two goals so far. They can take comfort from the achievementof Villarreal CF last season and AS Roma in the 2002/03 first group stage, as both clubs advanced to the next phasewith just three goals to their name. Villarreal are a particularly noteworthy example, as they made it all the way to thesemi-finals in their debut campaign in the competition.

Seven enoughThe good news for those who have made a slow start but are still in contention is that seven sides have successfullynegotiated a group with only seven points. The first to do it were Legia Warszawa in 1995/96 before Bayer 04Leverkusen managed it in 1999/00 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and Juventus both progressedwith seven points in 2002/03, a feat most recently achieved by Rangers FC and Bremen last term.

Freescoring UnitedThe record for most goals scored in a group stage was established by Manchester United FC in 1998/99 when theyfound the net 20 times en route to lifting the trophy. It is a mark that is unlikely to be challenged this year, with theclosest contenders being Spanish rivals Real Madrid CF and Valencia CF who have ten goals each to their name.

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but noneof the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A featuresthree league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finishedsecond in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature twodomestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions.Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classifiedin third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placedfinishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic leaguechampionship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation inthe UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP andReal Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF equalled Manchester United FC'srecord of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end lastseason, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons,United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four timesand the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition threetimes in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However,in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskvaand FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition whenit started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (losing to Olympique de Marseille), while PSVEindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FCBarcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle before the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cupsecond qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joinedby FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claimtheir place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96,the Italian side becoming the third club to achieve this following Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA ChampionsLeague final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yetto play a qualifying round match in order to reach the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourthappearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

Pedigree: Four of the former winners of the competition since it included a group stage element from the 1992/93season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely Olympique de Marseille (1992/93),AFC Ajax (1994/95), Juventus (1995/96) and BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97). The last ten winners of the competition,Real Madrid CF (three), Manchester United FC, FC Bayern München, AC Milan, FC Porto, Liverpool FC and FCBarcelona are involved in this season's group stage. Only three winners from the last ten UEFA Cup finals are notinvolved in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, namely Parma FC (1998/99), Feyenoord (2001/02)and Sevilla FC (2005/06). Liverpool and Porto have won both competitions in the past decade, while the remainingUEFA Cup winners in that time are FC Internazionale Milano, Galatasaray SK, Valencia CF and PFC CSKA Moskva.

UEFA information

Puskás rememberedHungarian and European football mourned the loss of an all-time great on Friday when Ferenc Puskás died in Budapestat the age of 79 after a long illness. Puskás won league titles in his homeland with Kispest Honvéd FC and in Spainwith Real Madrid CF, with whom he also lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup, memorably scoring four goals inthe 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960. On the international stage, Puskás and his Hungary team-mates capturedgold at the 1952 Olympic Games and followed that up with victories such as the 6-3 defeat of England at Wembleyon 25 November 1953.

UEFA President Lennart Johansson said: "I knew about his illness and thought that I was prepared to receive theultimate bad news. But I wasn't. Realisation that I will never see Ferenc Puskás again gives me a sense of emptinessthat, I am sure, a lot of other people are experiencing. The footballer had long since become a legend. With that leftfoot which could be velvet or pure steel, he broke all sorts of records. He went into the annals of UEFA as the onlyplayer to have scored four goals and the only one to record two hat-tricks in European finals.

"Behind the remarkable statistics was a remarkable man. In his humble way, he would deny that he had a profoundinfluence on the development of European football. But he did. What's more, his career and his life held a mirror tothe history of our continent... Ferenc Puskás once said that he loved football more than he loved life. Sadly, his lifeis now over. But football will never stop loving Ferenc Puskás."

Athens designUEFA has unveiled the new visual identity created for the 2007 UEFA Champions League final in Athens at a specialceremony in the Greek capital. The event design to be used around the UEFA Champions League final at Athens'sOlympic Stadium on 23 May was revealed at the Ceremonies Hall within the City Hall in Kotzia Square on 9 November. The UEFA Champions League final has, in recent years, been given an identity of its own with a unique logo, a designconcept and an overall theme. The objective is to help promote the final and enhance the prestige of one of the world'sbiggest sporting events.

Independent European Sports ReviewEuropean law has continued to have a major impact on sport in recent years, although the cases are less celebratedthan the 1995 Bosman case that drastically altered football. One of these was the Meca-Medina case, in whichjudgement was handed down by the European Court of Justice in a case involving two swimmers who had failed adoping test.

In a summary article and longer background essay, published on uefa.com, UEFA's director of legal affairs GianniInfantino looks at this case and related questions, especially in view of the findings of the newly-published IndependentEuropean Sports Review. The review supports recognition of sport's specific nature in European Union legislation, and the preservation and protection of the present European sports model, and asks if the Meca-Medina verdict is astep backwards for the European sports model and sports specificity.

Head coach profiles

Cosmin OlaroiuDate of birth: 10 June 1969Nationality: RomanianPlaying career: FC National 2000 Bucuresti, FC Universitatea Craiova, Suwon Bluewings FC, JEF United IchiharaCoaching career: FC National 2000 Bucuresti, FCU Politehnica Timisoara, FC Steaua Bucuresti

An average player for FC National 2000 Bucuresti, FC Universitatea Craiova and in the Far East, Cosmin Olaroiucuts a much more distinctive figure in the dugout. He became the youngest coach in Romanian First Division historywhen he took the helm at National and he has gone from strength to strength since, eventually landing at FC SteauaBucuresti, whom he guided to the final four of the UEFA Cup last season. Middlesbrough FC blocked their path tothe final then but Olaroiu could at least take consolation in having guided the capital club to the title.

A studious and dedicated coach out of the mould of Liverpool FC legend Bob Paisley, much of Olaroiu's determinationis a result of the three-year spell he had in Japan and the Korean Republic towards the end of his playing career. Heturned out for Suwon Bluewings FC and JEF United Ichihara between 1997 and 2000, bringing the curtain down ona career that began with Steaua when he turned down a promising basketball career to concentrate on football andsubsequently spending much of his playing days on the fringes of the teams at National and Universitatea Craiova.

Olaroiu quickly rose to prominence as a coach, however, pushing National to within one win of the title in 2001/02.He had short spells at Steaua, National and FCU Politehnica Timisoara before he was sacked by the latter in November2005. Within days he was back at Steaua and after a successful UEFA Cup campaign he capped an excellent seasonwith the league title.

Anatoli DemianenkoDate of birth: 19 January 1959Nationality: UkrainianPlaying career: FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, FC Dynamo Kyiv, 1. FC Magdeburg, RTS Widzew LódzCoaching career: FC Dynamo Kyiv

Anatoli Demianenko began his playing career with his hometown club FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, though his greatesttriumphs came with FC Dynamo Kyiv, where he first moved in 1979. He won the Soviet championship in his firstseason and capped a fine campaign with a starring role at the 1980 UEFA European Under-21 Championship as theUSSR team conceded just once in six matches on their way to the title. He has since described the achievement, inwhich he played at the heart of the defence, as "unforgettable".

Demianenko won the first of his 80 senior caps the following year, going on to represent USSR in three FIFA WorldCups and the 1988 UEFA European Championship, where he played a pivotal role as his team reached the finalbefore losing to the Netherlands. The centre-back won four more league titles and four cups at Dynamo, as well asthe 1986 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. After spells in Germany and Poland, he returned to Dynamo and in 1992 helpedthem to their first championship since Ukrainian independence.

Demianenko joined the club's coaching staff before taking over as head coach in September 2005, moving up froman assistant's role after Dynamo failed to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in nineyears. Demianenko flourished immediately, putting the advice he has received down the years from the likes of JozsefSzabo, Valeriy Lobanovskiy and Leonid Buryak into practice. He won his first trophy as a coach in May 2006 asDynamo lifted the Ukrainian Cup, although FC Shakhtar Donetsk denied the Kiev club a domestic double by claimingthe league title a few days later.

Jaroslav Jára has made his way into the top bracket of European referees with some fine displays. As well as hisprogress on the continental circuit, such as taking control of the October 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championshipplay-off match between Germany and England, which the latter won 2-0 in Leverkusen to earn a finals place, intriguingdomestic appointments have steadily come the way of the keen cyclist and skier. He has not been restricted to hisnative Czech Republic either but has also worked in the Slovakian top flight.

That was F.Y.R. Macedonia's 3-1 homewin against Liechtenstein in a UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier in June 2003, and he then took charge of two subsequentFIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

The 2005/06 Matchday 6 encounter between SK Rapid Wien and Juventus, which the Italian team won 3-1, was hisfirst appointment in the UEFA Champions League proper, having previously officiated at a first qualifying round matchbetween FC BATE Borisov and Bohemian FC in July 2003. The 2006/07 season then marked his return to thecompetition with PFC Levski Sofia's third qualifying round 2-0 defeat of AC Chievo Verona on 8 August while he alsohad the honour of taking charge of the UEFA Cup group-stage match between US Città di Palermo and NewcastleUnited FC on 2 November, which the visiting English club won 1-0.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
