As I sit in one of the sessions with my mini Dell laptop, I notice that as I am Googling the speaker to find her blog, the person in front of me is twittering--so I open a window for twitter as well!The conference posted announcements on its Facebook page 8. I gave my first speech at Supper Club and focused on the impact of the internet on our language. At that time, I thought Twitter was an interesting fad--something passing. It seemedsomething rather narcissistic (Hey look at me...I'm at the mall. I just brushed my teeth. I like microwave popcorn)I felt like I was competing with Facebook for my students' attention. When I finally broke down and set up a Facebook page, and started looking around the Hawkeye network, I wasnd horrified by the bad grammar, inane comments, tasteless pictures and so called friends' comments that I saw posted on some of the pages. 9. Over time, however, I realized td that my thinking was changing about Twitter and Facebook. Mike began using Twitter early on....I was intrigued but skeptical. It seemed sort of silly or self self- centered. I was even more skeptical of Facebook, but set up a page so that I could better undererstand my students' fascination with it.I didn't like the idea of posting messages on someone's wall wall--it seemed too public. I liked email -- that was my idea of quot;normal.quot;I wasnt at all sure what it meant to get poked on Facebook! 10. I worried about the possibility of my students being addicted to Facebook. I also worried about the danger of sex predators hanging out there. I was irritated when I saw stupid, illiterate or inappropriate comments and less than tasteful pictures that were posted on so many pages.Warning: Scary people! 11. Within 30 minutes of setting up my Face book page, I heard from half a dozen people wanting to be my friends -- including several that I didn't have email for and hadn't heard from in awhile. It was magic.Several former students found me and were delighted to see me on Facebook!Suddenly, I was COOL! 12. I set up a Twitter page I set up a Tumblr account I created my Facebook page and set it so that when I update my Twitter page, it also updates the Facebook page! (Okay, I copied Mikethats how he did it) 13. We all saw the way that the Democrats, and especially Obamas team, use the power of the web & all of its tools Blogs, Facebook, email The campaign changed the way we run campaignseveryone realized that gaveeveryone Obama access to people & people felt they had access to him. He asked for ideas, feedback, as well as donations of time & money. 14. 1) Facebook and Twitter seem like the old west, with not a lot of law and order. Pages loo messy, chaotic, and lots oflook visual clutter, along with demands to play games, takes surveys, and give gifts. We heard some jokes about the inane comments posted by some of the Senators and Congressmen during the Presidents address in February.2) Email is our comfort zone -- is private and secure in--it contrast to posting comments on people's quot;wallsquot; (pages) or in tweets. We can also easily manage email email--sort it, create folders, etc. so it seems to be more in our control. 15. 3) Some of us worried that in typing short little chunks, we were encouraging shallow thinking, and in danger of becoming incapable of sustained thought. 4) HOWEVER, we overlooked the very reasons that Social networking Sites and Micro blogging tools like Twitter are popular. They are EASY to use. Someone else has done the hard work; it takes minutes to set up your page and then, like magic, you hear from people that you have lost touch with years ago. 16. To find old friends you lost track of after collegeTo keep up with your teenagers, college age children, or young adult children (or grandchildren)To more fully understand why everyone's so crazy about it (curiosity)Easy way to share photos and news with family and friends who are scattered around the country 17. In addition, 1) to promote a cause (breast cancer, Darfur, or earth day) 2) to sell a product or service 3) to provide support (weight watchers) 4) to promote a special event (a marathon, fund raiser, 5) to organize people during a crisis (to get rescuers to the scene after a plane crash or get sand baggers to help prevent flooding, or after a crime to help catch the criminal) 18. I was amazed at how many carartoons mentioned twittering or posting to Facebook. Almost every media outlet, politician, and VIP has a twitter presence. I get Twitter feeds from CNN, KWWL and the Waterloo Courier. You can read about twittering in blogs, newspapers, books, and even PEOPLE magazine. Jennifer Aniston may have broken up with her boyfriend Jo Mayer because he was so John hooked on Twitter that he wasn't paying enough attention to her! You can also post a link on Facebook.)I also use them to get support for my efforts in Weight Watchers, to follow newsmakers like Rick Sanchez and Rachelrs Maddow, and keep up with friends scattered around the state. 26. 1) Are we so obsessed with the web that we are isolating ourselves)from family and friends in the quot;real worldquot; in order to have a lifeonline?2) Is the quick and easy interface of Twitter and Facebook encouraging people to be even more self involved, posting the silly trivia of their day?3) Are features like the 140 character limit of Twitter and Facebook's brief postings on the wall making us even more fragmented in our thinking and communication style?4) Will all of this quick communication make us more distracted, and less able to focus on creating or reading/processing longer chunks of text? 27. 5) Is the line between personal and professional professional--and public and private--even more blurred by the use of Facebook andeven Twitter?6) Shirky points out that the line is also blurring between cyberspace and IRL, as people make plans on FB & Twitter to meet up.
