AUSTIN, Texas (Nov. 8, 2014) - No. 24/25 West Virginia fell behind early and never recovered, dropping a 33-16 decision at Texas in front of 95,714 at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns scored fi rst and never trailed. Behind quarterback Tyrone Swoopes, Texas chewed up a big chunk of the fi rst-quarter clock with an 11-play, 90-yard drive that ended with a Swoopes two-yard touchdown pass to Geoff Swaim. In the scoring drive, Swoopes completed passes of 15 yards to Jaxon Shipley and 29 yards to John Harris to keep the chains moving and give the Longhorns a 7-0 lead. West Virginia answered the score on its next drive by marching 40 yards to the Texas one-yard line. However, three plays from the one could not get the Mountaineers in the end zone, and they had to settle for a 22-yard Josh Lambert fi eld goal. A false start penalty on a fourth down try backed the football to the fi ve-yard line and forced the fi eld goal decision. Unfortunately for West Virginia, that was its best scoring opportunity of the fi rst half, as Texas controlled the second quarter, outscoring the Mountaineers by a 17-0 count. The Longhorns took a 14-3 advantage at the 8:56 mark of the second quarter, when running back Johnathan Gray broke loose for a 39-yard touchdown run. On the next possession, the Longhorn running game continued to excel with runs of 25 yards
from Malcolm Brown and 40 yards from Gray. Those were the two big plays in a 78-yard scoring drive that was capped by a two-yard Gray touch-down run, giving the Longhorns a 21-3 lead with 6:19 remaining. Two possessions later, Quandre Diggs intercepted WVU quarterback Clint Trickett to set up the fi nal points of the fi rst half. Longhorn kicker Nick Rose’s 39-yard fi eld goal was good, giving Texas a 24-3 lead at the half. A scoreless third quarter set the stage for a 22-point fourth. West Virginia scored its fi rst touchdown early in the fourth on a nine-yard Dreamius Smith run, cutting the defi cit to 24-10 and giving Smith four straight games with a rushing touchdown. Texas sacked Trickett in the end zone for a safety on WVU’s next drive, giving the Longhorns a 26-10 lead. Even with the safety, it still was a two possession game for the Mountaineers with plenty of time left. West Virginia got even closer at the 6:38 mark, when Smith broke loose for a 62-yard run that set up a three-yard scoring rush by Wendell Small-wood. WVU’s two-point conversion failed, and Texas had a 26-16 advantage. However, the Longhorns put an exclamation point on the game with Gray’s third touchdown run with just over 3:00 left to seal the game. West Virginia got a standout performance from receiver Kevin White with 16 receptions for 132 yards. The 16 receptions were a school record,
breaking the old mark of 14 held by Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin. White recorded his eighth 100-yard receiving game of 2014, and posted his fi fth game of 10 or more receptions on the season. Trickett 248 yards passing put him over the 3,000-yard mark for the season. He became just the third Mountaineer quarterback in school history to throw for 3,000 or more yards in a season. Smith added 100 yards rushing, while the defense was led by Nick Kwiatkoski’s 10 tackles and Daryl Worley’s eight stops and one intercep-tion. For Texas, Gray’s big day included three touchdowns and 101 yards on the ground. He averaged 10.1 yards per rush. Brown added 90 yards rushing, while Swoopes fi nished with 124 yards passing. The Longhorn defense was led by Dylan Haines and Cedric Reed, who combined for 26 tackles, four tackles for loss of 22 yards and three sacks. Final numbers showed West Virginia with 200 yards rushing and 248 passing to total 448 yards of off ense. Texas rushed for 227 yards and passed for 124 to fi nish with 351 yards of total off ense. Texas evened its record at 5-5 on the season, while West Virginia dropped to 6-4. In all-time Big 12 play, the victory gave Texas a 2-1 advantage and tied the overall series at 2-2.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (Oct. 26, 2013) - Kansas State erased a fi ve-point third quarter defi cit to defeat West Virginia, 35-12, in front of 52,898 fans on Homecoming at Bill Snyder Family Stadi-um. For the second straight Big 12 game, West Vir-ginia had the lead in the third quarter but could not fi nish with a victory. Against Kansas State, the Wildcats scored 28 unanswered second-half points to close out the game. Using two quarterbacks, Jake Waters and Daniel Sams, the Wildcats threw just three incomplete passes in 21 attempts, while the KSU defense collected two sacks, six tackles for loss and one interception to slow the West Virginia off ense. Kansas State started the scoring with 3:57 left in the opening quarter, when Waters found Tyler Lockett for a 35-yard touchdown pass. The Mountaineers were able to answer the score at the 10:05 mark of the second quarter, when quarterback Clint Trickett rushed in from six-yards out to complete a 47-yard drive. KSU blocked the ensuing extra-point attempt to hold on to a 7-6 advantage.
West Virginia kicker Josh Lambert erased the defi cit at the 5:25 mark of the second quarter, with a 21-yard fi eld goal that ended a 79-yard scoring drive. Highlighting the drive was a 50-yard completion from Trickett to receiver Ronald Carswell. Just before halftime, West Virginia faked a 26-yard fi eld goal attempt, but holder Michael Molinari was tackled short of a fi rst down on his rushing attempt and the score remained 9-7 in favor of WVU at the intermission. The Mountaineers got on the board at the 10:40 mark of the third quarter, when Lambert connected on a career-long 50-yard fi eld goal, giving WVU a 12-7 lead. The big play of the drive was a 43-yard completion from Trickett to receiver Kevin White. With 2:16 left in the third, Kansas State regained the lead for good, when Sams found Lockett for a nine-yard scoring toss, giving the Wildcats a 14-12 advantage. Kansas State would go on to score 21 more points in the fourth quarter to wrap the game up. The Mountaineer off ense could not fi nd its way to the end zone again, and the Wildcats
wore down a tired WVU defense. KSU ended up possessing the ball for 11 minutes more than the Mountaineers, despite running seven less plays. Fourth-quarter scoring by K-State saw Tra-maine Thompson haul in a 30-yard touchdown pass to end a 78-yard drive with 11:11 left in the game. Then Lockett added his third touchdown reception in the contest with a 24-yard pass from Waters with 7:31 remaining. And fi nally, running back John Hubert closed out the scoring with just 21 seconds left as he scampered in from four-yards out to give K-State its only rushing touchdown of the game. For West Virginia, Trickett passed for 227 yards, while running back Charles Sims was the team’s leading rusher with 43 yards, while also grab-bing seven catches for 54 yards. Karl Joseph was outstanding for the WVU defense with 12 solo tackles, two TFL, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Teammate Nick Kwiatkoski added 11 stops, one sack and one forced fumble. For Kansas State, Waters fi nished with 198 yards passing, and Sams added 93 yards. To go along with his three touchdowns, Lockett had 111 yards receiving, while teammate Curry Sexton hauled in 112 yards on six catches. The Wildcat defense was led by Ty Zimmerman with 12 tackles followed by Blake Slaughter with nine stops, two TFL and one fumble recovery. Final numbers showed West Virginia with 103 yards rushing and 264 passing for 367 yards of total off ense. Kansas State fi nished with 157 yards on the ground and 291 through the air for 448 yards of total off ense.

Last Time vs. Kansas State in Morgantown: No. 4/3 Kansas State 55, No. 17/15 West Virginia 14
MORGANTOWN, W.Va (Oct. 20, 2012) - Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was responsible for seven touchdowns, and the senior led the Wildcats to a 55-14 road victory over West Virginia in front of 60,101 fans at Milan Puskar Stadium. Klein’s big night consisted of four rushing touchdowns and three passing, as he accounted for 364 yards of total off ense. His favorite target, receiver Tyler Lockett, hauled in nine catches for 194 yards and two scores, as the Wildcats jumped out to a 24-0 lead and never looked back. Kansas State took the game’s opening possession and converted a 33-yard Anthony Cantele fi eld goal. The good news for the Moun-taineers was that they held K-State to a fi eld goal; the bad news was that the Wildcats would score touchdowns on their next seven straight possessions. Klein hit Lockett on a 10-yard scoring pass at the 3:33 mark of the fi rst quarter to give the Wildcats a 10-0 lead, heading into the second quarter. Klein used the second stanza as a showcase
for his running skills, scoring on touchdown runs of one, eight and one yards to end drives of 64, 75 and 78 yards. The Wildcats controlled the ball 11 minutes more in the fi rst half to open up a 24-0 advantage. West Virginia got on the scoreboard with 4:13 left in the fi rst half, when Tavon Austin returned a kickoff 100 yards to cut the defi cit to 24-7. The kickoff return marked Austin’s fourth of his career for a touchdown, including the second 100-yard return for a score. Klein’s third touchdown run of the quarter, with just 17 seconds left, quickly took the crowd out of the game once again. Austin’s kickoff re-turn ignited the Mountaineer faithful for a short time, before Klein’s run gave the Wildcats a 31-7 lead at the half. The Mountaineers did receive the ball to start the third quarter, but quarterback Geno Smith’s fi rst interception in a then NCAA-record 273 passes set up the Wildcats once again deep in WVU territory. Two plays later, Klein hit receiv-er Chris Harper for a 21-yard strike and a 38-7 K-State advantage. The Wildcats put 21 points on the board in the
second quarter, and they would repeat the eff ort in the third. Klein added another one-yard rushing touch-down at the 9:00 mark, and then hit Lockett for a 20-yard touchdown reception at the 2:25 mark to end a 77-yard drive, giving Kansas State a 52-7 lead heading to the fourth. West Virginia got on the board again with 7:31 left in the contest, when Smith found Austin for a fi ve-yard touchdown reception. However, Kansas State closed out the scoring with 3:48 left, when Cantele connected on his second fi eld goal, this time from 42-yards out, for the 55-14 victory. Aside from Klein and Lockett’s big night, receiver Chris Harper hauled in six catches for 96 yards, while Randall Evans and Arthur Brown paced the defense with a combined 17 tackles. For West Virginia, Smith fi nished with 143 yards passing, and Austin accounted for both TDs and 233 all-purpose yards. Karl Joseph and Isaiah Bruce had nine tackles each for the WVU defense. The Mountaineers fi nished with 88 yards rushing and 155 passing for 243 yards of off ense. Kansas State gained 146 yards on the ground and 333 through the air for 479 yards of total off ense. The victory gave Kansas State a 2-1 lead in the all-time series against West Virginia, as this was the fi rst game played between the two teams since 1931. All three games in the series have been played in Morgantown, and the Wildcats now have a two-game winning streak against West Virginia.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Aug. 30, 2014) - West Virginia went into the Chick-fi l-A Kickoff game against No. 2 Alabama as more than a 25-point under-dog, but the Mountaineers held their own in a 33-23 win by the Crimson Tide. Missed opportunities hurt both sides, specially West Virginia, but the Mountaineers refused to roll over for the Tide. WVU senior receiver Kevin White was spectac-ular on the national stage with nine catches for 143 yards and one touchdown. The totals were a career high for White and the second 100-yard receiving eff ort of his career. West Virginia quarterback Clint Trickett got the afternoon started on the right foot, engi-neering a 14-play, 79-yard scoring drive on the game’s opening possession. The drive stalled at the Alabama three, and kicker Josh Lambert put the fi rst points on the board of the 2014 season with a 20-yard fi eld goal. Alabama answered with the next 10 points behind a 47-yard fi eld goal from Adam Griffi th and a 15-yard touchdown run by T.J. Yeldon for a 10-3 Tide advantage. Trickett was sharp for most of the day and brought the Mountaineers back to tie the game at 10-10, when he hit White for a 19-yard scoring toss in the corner of the end zone to fi nish off an impressive nine-play, 75- yard drive.
The fi nal 2:00 of the half was a fl urry of action as Alabama regained the lead with 1:57 left, when Yeldon scored his second touchdown. However, West Virginia answered right back with a 100-yard kickoff return from Mario Alford to knot the game again at 17-17. The only prob-lem with Alford’s score was that he left too much time on the clock (1:31), and Alabama capital-ized. The Tide drove 50 yards in the fi nal 1:31 and took a 20-17 lead at the half behind a 41-yard fi eld goal from Griffi th. Third quarter action saw the Tide add a Der-rick Henry 19-yard touchdown run to open up a 10-point lead at 27-17. Once again, just like in the fi rst half, Alabama had a chance to break the game open, but the Mountaineers would not go away. A game of fi eld goals between the two kickers ensued the rest of the way, as the two teams combined for four fi eld goals in the fi nal quarter and a half. WVU answered with a 42-yard Lambert fi eld goal to cut the defi cit to seven, 27-20, with 4:59 left in the third. Alabama answered with the fi nal score of the quarter coming at the 1:27 mark as Griffi th converted from 27-yards away. West Virginia could not take advantage of a
Daryl Worley interception in the fourth quarter, and several dropped passes would come back to haunt them and to end scoring opportunities. The Mountaineers put their fi nal points on the board with 13:37 left in the game, on Lambert’s 41-yard fi eld goal, which gave him three for the game, and closed WVU’s defi cit to seven at 30-23. But Griffi th added his fourth fi eld goal in the game with 8:07 left. His 45-yard eff ort ended the game’s scoring, gave him a 4-3 advantage over Lambert in the fi eld goal department and put the fi nal score at 33-23 in favor of the Crimson Tide. Along with White’s impressive numbers for West Virginia, Trickett was strong with 365 yards passing on 29 completions. Wendell Smallwood added 73 yards receiving and Jordan Thompson had fi ve catches for 62 yards. A trio of defenders led the Mountaineer defense behind Karl Joseph’s 18 tackles, fol-lowed by 11 stops each from Worley and Nick Kwaitkoski. Crimson Tide quarterback Blake Sims fi nished with 250 yards passing, while Yeldon and Henry led the ground game with a 126 and 113 yards. Amari Cooper was Alabama’s top receiver with 12 catches for 130 yards. Landon Collins led the Tide defense with eight stops. It was the fi rst meeting ever between the two schools, and a crowd of 70,502 packed the Georgia Dome for the meeting between teams from the SEC and Big 12 Conferences.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 6, 2014) - West Virginia gained its fi rst win of the 2014 season with a 54-0 shutout of Towson in front of 56,414 fans at Milan Puskar Stadium. WVU’s 54 points were its most since the fi nal regular-season game of 2012, and the shutout marked the fi rst by a Mountaineer defense since the opening game of the 2010 season. Senior quarterback Clint Trickett was impressive with only three incomplete passes in the fi rst half and fi ve total for the game. Trickett’s fi nal numbers stood at 35-of-40 for 348 yards and two touchdowns. The 348 passing yards marked the third straight 300-plus passing performance for Trickett dating back to the fi nal game of the 2013 season. The blowout win saw the Mountaineers run 33 more plays that the Tigers, enabling the home team to win the fi rst-down battle by a 33-7 count. The Mountaineers started strong with their foot on the gas and never looked back. The game’s opening possession saw West Virginia march 68 yards in 13 plays to grab a 7-0 lead, behind a Wendell Smallwood one-yard rush. Before the quarter ended, West Virginia was back on the board with a 19-yard fi eld goal by Josh Lambert. In the second quarter, the Mountaineers added 21 points to take a 31-0 lead at the half. Tailback Rushel Shell punched in a two-yard run for a score at the 9:04 mark, which was his fi rst as
a Mountaineer. West Virginia’s next possession ended with a one-yard scoring toss from Trickett to receiver Mario Alford. Highlighting the 64-yard drive was a 25-yard completion from Trickett to Smallwood. The Mountaineers closed the fi rst half scoring with just under a minute to play, when Trickett rushed in from fi ve yards out to fi nish off a 55-yard drive. Despite the big lead, West Virginia refused to let up. After holding Towson on its fi rst drive of the third quarter, Trickett went to the air again and found junior receiver Jordan Thompson for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The 75-yard scoring drive took just six plays and upped the WVU lead to 38-0. That advantage increased to 40-0 before the end of the third, when defensive lineman Shaq Riddick sacked Tiger quarterback Connor Frazier in the end zone for a safety at the 3:59 mark. The Mountaineers played many players in the blowout victory, and one of those was highly touted true freshman quarterback William Crest, Jr. Crest gave the Mountaineers a 47-0 lead with 12:04 left on his four-yard run, as he engineered an 11-play, 59-yard drive. West Virginia fi nished out the scoring with 6:27 remaining, as tailback Andrew Buie scored on a three-yard touchdown run. Buie made the most of his playing opportunity with nine rushes in the second half for 70 yards with a long carry
of 26. Buie fi nished with a 7.8-yard per carry average. In the game, a total of 10 players ran the ball for West Virginia, and 11 caught at least one pass. Aside from Trickett’s outstanding perfor-mance, Shell fi nished with 71 yards rushing and a 5.1-yards per carry average. Receiver Kevin White hauled in his second straight 100-yard receiving game of the season with 10 catches for 101 yards. Aside from his touchdown catch, Thompson added 52 yards to the receiving totals. West Virginia’s defensive eff ort was led by senior Wes Tonkery with fi ve tackles, followed by Isaiah Bruce with four. Towson’s rough day at the offi ce showed in its individual numbers. Darius Victor topped the Tiger rushing attack with 29 yards. Andre Dessenberg had 30 yards receiving, and the Ti-ger defense was led by Donnell Lewis and Chris Carpenter, who combined for 27 tackles. Final numbers in the game showed West Virginia with 251 yards rushing and 355 passing for an impressive 606 yards of total off ense. Towson’s fi nal numbers stood at 42 yards rushing and 80 passing for 122 yards of total off ense. The 54-point margin of victory was the most for the Mountaineers since an 80-7 victory over Rutgers in 2001. The win gave West Virginia an 87-18-6 all-time record in season home openers, while Coach Dana Holgorsen improved to 4-0 in homeopeners. The Mountaineers are now 15-0 all-timeagainst schools in the FCS .

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Sept. 13, 2014) - Josh Lambert’s 47-yard fi eld goal as time expiredproved to be the game-winner, as West Virginia won a wild game at Maryland by a 40-37 count. The Mountaineers turned in an off ensive showcase with 108 total plays and 694 yards of total off ense. Leading the way was senior quarterback Clint Trickett with 37 completions on 49 attempts for 511 yards and four touchdowns. The passing yards were the second-most in school history, and the performance earned Trickett the Walter Camp and Athlon National Player of the Week honors. Joining Trickett in the off ensive fun was senior receiver Kevin White with a carrer-high 13 catches for 216 yards, were the third-most yards ever for a WVU receiver. Teammate Mario Alford fi nished with 11 catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns. As it turned out, West Virginia needed every yard, catch and score it could get against the Ter-rapins, who would not go away and fought from behind for most of the day. The Mountaineers grabbed the lead on the game’s opening possession, when Rushel Shell’s one-yard run ended a 75-yard drive. The big play in the drive was a 50-yard completion from Trickett to Wendell Smallwood. The Maryland defi cit expanded to 14-0, before
the end of the fi rst quarter, as Trickett connected with Alford for a 43-yard touchdown pass to put the fi nishing touches on an 80-yard drive. The Terps cracked the scoreboard at the 12:33 mark of the second quarter on Brad Craddock’s 46-yard fi eld goal. Trickett answered the Maryland score with a 44-yard touchdown strike to Kevin White for a 21-3 WVU lead. After Maryland added another Craddock fi eld goal (41 yards), West Virginia answered again with an 89-yard drive that ended with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Trickett to Alford, and the Mountaineers found themselves with a 28-6 lead with 6:09 left in the opening half. Maryland would not go away, and fi nished the half on a strong note with a 77-yard pass, from quarterback C.J. Brown to receiver Stefon Diggs, cutting the defi cit to 28-13. With just 40 seconds left in the half, the Terps struck again with a 26-yard touchdown reception by Jacquille Veii, and despite posting 382 yards of total off ense, West Virginia led by only eight, 28-20, at the intermission. Maryland’s run back into the game continued on the fi rst play of the third quarter. Brown turned a simple quarterback rush into a 75-yard Terp touchdown, and with 14:46 left in the third, what was once a commanding WVU lead was now just 28-27. Special teams then got the Mountaineers
jump started as Jarrod Harper blocked a Terp punt at the 6:30 mark for a safety, putting the Mountaineers up 30-27. On the ensuing free kick, Trickett made the most of the possession with a 56-yard drive and an 11-yard scoring pass to Daikiel Shorts to spread the advantage out to 37-27. Maryland took advantage of a fumbled punt and added a 30-yard Craddock fi eld goal with 11:14 remaining, before tying the game at 37-37 on William Likely’s 69-yard punt return for a touchdown at the 9:43 mark. The defenses took over as each team was forced to punt twice, before West Virginia got the last possession with 2:35 left. Starting at their own fi ve-yard line, the Mountaineers drove 65 yards, highlighted by a 17-yard Shorts recep-tion, a 13-yard catch and 10-yard run by tailback Dustin Garrison to move the chains and set up Lambert’s 47-yard heroics. At one point, Maryland was 4-of-5 on third-down conversions and fi nished the game 4-of-15 on third down, thanks to a Mountaineer defense that stiff ened when it had to. Lineback-er Nick Kwiatkoski led the eff ort with 12 tackles. For Maryland, Brown rushed for 161 yards and passed for 241. Diggs topped the Terp receivers with 127 yards. Sean Davis led the Terp defense with 13 stops. Final totals showed West Virginia with 183 yards on the ground and 511 passing for 694 yards, while the Terrapins fi nished with 163 yards on the ground and 284 through the air for 447 total yards. With the win, West Virginia improved to 27-22-2 all-time against Maryland, 13-11-1 all-time in College Park and 1-0 against the Terps when they are members of the Big Ten.

Led by the rushing of tailback Samaje Perine, who fi nished with 242 yards and four touchdowns, the Sooners pounded their way to 301 total yards on the ground, and the Mountaineers had no answer for the Sooner ground attack. Oklahoma scored fi rst, when Michael Hunnicutt’s 42-yard fi eld goal gave the Sooners a 3-0 lead with 4:20 left in the fi rst quarter. The Mountaineers got the stadium rocking just before the end of the quarter, when quarterback Clint Trickett connected on a 68-yard touchdown strike to receiver Kevin White, giving the Mountaineers a 7-3 advantage heading into an explosive second quarter. Both teams combined for 38 points in the quarter with each answering the other’s punches. A career long 54-yard fi eld goal by WVU kicker Josh Lambert widened the lead to 10-3. The kick was the second-longest fi eld goal in stadium history. The Sooners responded with a 75-yard drive in which Durron Neal on a reverse threw a four-yard touchdown to Sooner sophomore quarterback Trevor Knight to tie the game at 10-10 with 8:58 left in the half.
West Virginia answered just over a minute later, when Trickett put the exclamation point on a 75-yard drive with a 30-yard strike to Mario Alford, putting the Mountaineers back in front by a 17-10 count. The fi reworks in the quarter were far from over as Oklahoma tied the game at the 3:09 mark on Perine’s fi rst touchdown. His two-yard run ended a 75-yard drive and tied the game at 17-17. The Mountaineers took a 24-17 lead with just 1:20 left in the half on tailback Rushel Shell’s fi ve-yard rush. Just when the home folks thought the half’s scoring was over, Oklahoma’s Alex Ross took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Instead of a 24-17 WVU lead at the half, the game was tied and OU got the ball fi rst to start the third quarter. Seven plays and 75-yards later, Oklahoma grabbed the lead for good on the fi rst possession of the second half. Perine scored touchdown No. 2 with a nine-yard rush, giving the sooners a 31-24 advantage. West Virginia added Lambert’s second fi eld goal, (31 yards), at the 6:28 mark to pull within four at 31-27, but the Sooner ground attack continued to churn out the yards and keep the ball away from the WVU off ense. Touchdown No. 3 for Perine came with 1:00 left in the third, as he powered in from fi ve-yards away, giving the Sooners a 38-7 lead heading into the fi nal stanza.
Who else but Perine would close out the scoring for Oklahoma in the fourth quarter as his 19-yard run upped the Sooner advantage to 45-27 with 4:30 left. West Virginia added a late Dreamius Smith touchdown run of 11 yards with just over two minutes left in the game to put the fi nal score at 45-33 in favor of the Sooners. West Virginia got strong off ensive performances from its big three. Trickett fi nished with 376 passing yards and two scores, while White totaled 10 catches for 173 yards. Alford joined White in the 100-yard receiving category with seven catches for 101 yards. Karl Joseph led the West Virginia defense with 13 tackles, 10 of which were solo stops. Aside from his fi nal rushing yards and score, Perine’s big day included a 7.1 yards per carry average, and he was joined by Ross, who turned in 7.0 yards per carry. Knight ended his day with 16 completions for 205 yards. Sterling Shepard caught six of those Knight passes for 101 yards, and punter Jed Barnett keep the fi eld position in OU’s favor for most of the night with a 48.0 yards per punt average and a long of 70 yards. Final totals showed WVU with 137 yards on the ground and 376 through the air for 513 yards. OU totaled 301 yards rushing and 209 passing for 510 total yards. Despite only running fi ve more plays, the Sooners keep the Mountaineer off ense off the fi eld by holding onto the ball nearly eight minutes longer. The win gave the Sooners a 3-0 series advantage over WVU in all-time Big 12 play, and a 5-2 advantage in overall games played.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 4, 2014) - West Virginia secured win No. 3 of the 2014 season with a 33-14 Homecoming victory over Kansas. The win upped the WVU record to 3-2 on the season and evened its Big 12 record at 1-1. Kansas played the game under interim head coach Clint Bowen, after former head coach Charlie Weiss was dismissed just six days earlier. Kansas defeated West Virginia a year ago, and the Mountaineers knew it was important to get off to a fast start, and that’s just what they did by scoring 16 fi rst quarter points. The Mountaineers took the game’s fi rst possession 40 yards, and came away with a 3-0 lead on kicker Josh Lambert’s 42-yard fi eld goal. That was just the start for Lambert, as his leg would be used often. The sophomore kicker fi nished the day with 15 total points and added his second fi eld goal at the 7:50 mark of the fi rst, when he hit from 25-yards out. That fi eld goal ended a nine-play, 59-yard drive. Field goal No. 3 for Lambert came just over 1:30 later, ending a fi ve-play, 26-yard drive with a 43-yarder. After another stop by the West Virginia defense, the Mountaineers got on the scoreboard with a touchdown with just 29 sec-onds left in the fi rst. Quarterback Clint Trickett connected on a 63-yard touchdown strike to receiver Kevin White, giving the Mountaineers a 16-0 lead. The touchdown to White was West Virginia’s second longest play from scrimmage
in 2014. Trickett and White also hold the longest on the season at 68 yards, which went for a score against Oklahoma. The Mountaineers had three scoring chances in the second quarter and converted on two. Lambert had a 47-yard attempt blocked, before tailback Rushel Shell scored on a one-yard scoring run that gave the Mountaineers a 23-0 advantage, and culminating a 60-yard drive in just six plays. The key play was a 39-yard completion from Trickett to receiver Mario Alford. As the half ended, Lambert kicked the second-longest fi eld goal of his career, as his fourth in the fi rst half was good from 53-yards out, giving West Virginia a 26-0 advantage at the intermission. Just one game earlier against Oklahoma, Lambert hit for his career-best of 54 yards. The West Virginia defense was strong in the fi rst half, holding the Jayhawks to just 42 yards rushing and 42 passing for 84 total yards and seven punts. Kansas got on the scoreboard at the 4:18 mark of the third quarter by taking advantage of a fumbled punt to gain possession at the WVU 18-yard line. Corey Avery’s four-yard rush cut the Jayhawk defi cit to 26-7. However, any momentum Kansas gained was lost just 14 seconds later, when Alford returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and a 33-7 WVU lead. It was Alford’s second
kickoff return for a score of the season, and he became the fi rst WVU player to pull off the feat since Tavon Austin in 2011. Alford also became just the fourth Mountaineer in school history to return two kickoff s for a score in a season. The Jayhawks ended the game’s scoring with 2:23 left, when Nick Harwell returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown. White fi nished with six catches for 132 yards and a score. It marked the fi fth straight 100-yard receiving performance for White and tied the school record held by Stedman Bailey. Trickett fi nished with 302 yards passing, while Shell turned in his fi rst 100-yard rushing performance as a Mountaineer with 113 yards on 21 carries. The outstanding defensive play for WVU continued in the second half, as Kansas fi nished with just 176 total yards. Linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski led the eff ort with seven tackles and two TFLs Avery led the Jayhawks with 58 yards rushing, while Nigel King had four receptions for 52 yards. Quarterbacks Michael Cummings and Montell Cozart split the playing time and totaled 111 yards on 13 completions. The Jayhawk defense was led by Isaiah Johnson with nine stops Final totals showed West Virginia with a solid 255 yards rushing and 302 passing for 557 yards. Kansas’ 176 total yards broken down showed 111 passing and just 65 yards on the ground against a stingy Mountaineer defense that forced the Jayhawks to punt a WVU opponent record 14 times. With the win, West Virginia improved to 3-1 all-time against the Jayhawks and 2-1 in Big 12 play.
LUBBOCK, Texas (Oct. 11, 2014) - For the second time in 2014, and third for his career, West Virginia kicker Josh Lambert connected on a game-winning fi eld goal in the fi nal seconds, lifting the Mountaineers to a 37-34 come-from-behind road victory at Texas Tech. Trailing by 14 points with just 7:32 remaining, the Mountaineers scored on their fi nal three possessions, while coming up with big defensive stops to stun the Red Raiders in front of 58,502 at Jones AT&T Stadium. In the win, West Virginia posted two 100-yard rushers and two 100-yard receivers for the fi rst time in school history. Fans expected to see plenty of off ense from the two teams, and they were not disappointed. The Mountaineers scored on their opening drive for the fi fth time this season, when Lambert hit the fi rst of his three fi eld goals as his 42-yarder gave WVU a 3-0 lead. The Red Raiders answered with two scores before the end of the quarter to take a 14-3 advantage. Tech’s fi rst score came at the 3:05 mark, when Davis Webb connected with Devin Lauderdale for a 34-yard touchdown strike. Webb and Lauderdale hooked up again at the 1:14 mark, this time for 76 yards, as Tech took the 11-point lead into the second quarter. WVU’s Rushel Shell stopped Tech’s 14-point run with a touchdown early in the second. Shell’s 12-yard scamper ended a nine-play, 75-yard drive to cut the WVU defi cit to 14-10.
Texas Tech ended the scoring in the fi rst half at the 11:13 mark, when Webb and Jakeem Grant hooked up for a 43-yard pass play. Both defenses stiff ened the rest of the way, and the Red Raiders took a 21-10 advantage into the locker room. WVU used a 38-yard fi eld goal by Lambert to pull within 21-13 with 8:03 left in the third. Texas Tech then drove 71 yards before a strong defensive stand forced them to settle for a 21-yard fi eld goal by Ryan Bustin. The Mountaineer defense came up big again in the quarter, when Tech was in good fi eld position af-ter recovering a West Virginia fumble. However, the defense stiff ened and forced the Red Raiders to settle for a 25-yard Bustin fi eld goal. Those two defensive stops proved pivotal as Tech had a chance to break open the game but could not. WVU quarterback Clint Trickett ended the third quarter by connecting with receiver Jordan Thompson for a 56-yard touchdown, put-ting the score at 27-20 in favor of Tech heading into the fourth. The Red Raiders seemed to put the game away with 7:32 remaining on a 69-yard touch-down run by Justin Stockton. Despite trailing 34-20, the Mountaineers would not go away. Instead, WVU answered under 2:00 later with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Trickett to Kevin White. Another defensive stop gave the ball back to Trickett, and he drove the off ense 78 yards in
just seven plays to tie the game on Shell’s one-yard run with 2:02 left in the game. Plenty of time remained for Texas Tech, but the West Virginia defense came up big with yet another stop, giving the Mountaineers the ball back with 52 seconds left. Trickett calmly took the off ense 42 yards to get within Lambert’s range, and the sophomore converted on a career-long 55-yard fi eld goal to give WVU the comeback win. The 55-yarder tied the longest in school history and marked the longest road fi eld goal ever by a WVU kicker. Trickett fi nished with 301 yards passing, while White marked a school-record sixth straight 100-yard receiving performance with 123 yards. Thompson joined White with 109 yards receiving, and the Mountaineer running game was led by Wendell Smallwood (123 yards) and Shell (110 yards). Leading the defense was Nick Kwiatkoski with 11 tackles. Texas Tech was led by Webb with 348 passing yards and three touchdowns. DeAndre Washing-ton totaled 132 yards rushing, while Lauderdale caught three passes for 112 yards. The Red Raider defense was paced by Keenon Ward with 16 tackles. Final totals showed West Virginia with 249 yards rushing, 301 passing for 550 yards, which gave the Mountaineers a school-record fi fth straight game with 500 yards of total off ense. Tech totaled 217 rushing and 348 passing for 565 total yards. The win evened the series with Texas Tech at 2-2 and gave WVU its fi rst win over the Red Raiders in Big 12 play.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 18, 2014) - West Virginia put together its best defensive performance of the season and knocked off No. 4 Baylor, 41-27, before a sellout crowd at Milan Puskar Stadium. Tony Gibson’s defense held the potent Baylor off ense to just 95 yards rushing (24 at the half ) and 223 yards passing. The Mountaineers sacked Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty four times and came up with 10 tackles for a loss of 45 yards in the impressive performance. Slowing down the Bears’ off ense was the goal, but the Mountaineers did more than slow them down. Gibson’s defense was able to match Baylor’s intensity and at times frustrated the Bears, who turned in a Big 12 and Milan Puskar Stadium record 18 penalties for 215 yards. Meanwhile on off ense, Baylor simply could not guard West Virginia receiver Kevin White as the Bears had fi ve pass interference penalties called on White’s defender that resulted in auto-matic fi rst downs for the Mountaineers. White fi nished with eight catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns and continues to lead the nation and Big 12 in receiving. The 100-yard receiving eff ort extended White’s streak to a nation’s leading seven straight games with 100 yards or more receiving. Also in the game, White became just the fi fth Mountaineer in school history to record 1,000 receiving yards in a season, and he did so in just seven games.
Any hopes West Virginia had in starting fast were quickly diminished as a sack of quarterback Clint Trickett caused a fumble, which was recovered by Baylor at the WVU seven-yard line. One play later, Petty connected with receiver Corey Coleman for a seven-yard score, and the Bears had a 7-0 lead just barely a minute into the game. Most would have thought that the Baylor rout was on, but not in 2014 as this West Virginia squad would have none of that talk. West Virginia answered just two minutes later, when Trickett hit White for a 36-yard touchdown pass to bring the crowd back into the game and tie the score at 7-7. Baylor kicker Chris Callahan added two fi eld goals before the quarter ended. His 38-yarder ended a 41-yard drive, and his 34-yarder was set up by an interception of Trickett. Holding Baylor to two fi eld goals and not touchdowns was key for the Mountaineer defense, which gained confi dence and swagger as the day went on. Second-quarter action was all West Virginia, as the Mountaineers outscored the Bears by 10 points. West Virginia took its fi rst lead at the 10:56 mark, when tailback Andrew Buie rushed in from one-yard out to end a 74-yard drive. The Bears went back on top, 21-20, with 8:25 left in the half on Petty’s 63-yard pass play to Antwan Goodley. But once again, the
Mountaineers took the Baylor punch and never fl inched. WVU regained the lead, 21-20, on a nine-yard scamper from running back Dreamius Smith, be-fore going up 24-20 on Josh Lambert’s 54-yard fi eld goal as the half came to an end. The kick was Lambert’s fourth of 50 yards or more on the season and fi fth of his career. The kick also gave him four straight games with a successful fi eld goal of 50 yards or more. Lambert came back in the third quarter with a 24-yard fi eld goal, giving West Virginia a 27-20 advantage with 9:28 left. But Baylor struck for a huge 92-yard drive that ended with a Shock Linwood one-yard run to tie the game at 27-27 heading into the fourth. The Baylor contest marked the third Top 5 opponent for WVU in seven games. While they came close in the previous two, Coach Dana Hol-gorsen talked to his team in the week leading up to the game about fi nishing and that’s exactly what the Mountaineers did. Trickett went to White for a 12-yard scoring toss at the 11:36 mark of the fourth to give the Mountaineers a 34-27 lead. White’s beautiful one-handed grab ended a 68-yard drive in just four plays. Then with 7:35 left in the game, Trickett went to the air again and found Mario Alford for a 39-yard touchdown pass, giving WVU a 14-point advantage, and the defense kept the Bears silent the rest of the way. Trickett’s 322 yards passing marked the seventh straight game that he has surpassed 300-yards passing, and the win over No. 4 was WVU’s highest since 2008, and highest at home since 2003.

STILLWATER, Okla. (Oct. 25, 2014) - No. 22/25 West Virginia jumped out to a quick 14-0 fi rst quarter lead and never looked back in defeating Oklahoma State, 34-10, in front of a Homecoming crowd of 59,124 at Boone Pickens Stadium. Oklahoma State took the game’s fi rst possession from its own 25 to the WVU 38-yard line. Facing a 4th-and-4, the Cowboys failed on a surprising fourth-down attempt, which put the Mountaineer off ense in good fi eld position. Quarterback Clint Trickett quickly took advantage of the good starting position, as he directed a fi ve-play scoring drive that ended with a 19-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kevin White. Big plays in the drive came from running back Wendell Smallwood with a reception of 14 yards and a run of 20 to keep the chains moving. After the Mountaineer defense held the Cowboy off ense on downs, Trickett went right back to the air three minutes later on West Virginia’s next possession. The Mountaineers marched 90 yards in just three plays, keyed by a 79-yard scoring toss from Trickett to senior receiver Mario Alford. The play was West Virginia’s longest from scrimmage to date on the season and gave the Mountaineers a 14-0 lead with 7:49 left in the opening quarter. The Mountaineer defense held strong for the remainder of the quarter, as true freshman defensive back Dravon Henry stopped another Cowboy drive with an interception.
Oklahoma State scored its fi rst points early in the second quarter, when kicker Ben Grogan connected on a 40-yard fi eld goal to put the score at 14-3 at the 14:11 mark. After a West Virginia drive stalled, the Cowboy off ense went on the attack once again, and used a 51-yard rush by Brandon Sheperd, and 30 yards rushing on three plays from tailback Tyreek Hill to move to the WVU eight-yard line. OSU quarterback Daxx Garman then found Teddy Johnson open in the fl at for an eight-yard touchdown reception, pulling the Cowboys to 14-10 with 8:34 left in the half. Oklahoma State had another scoring chance thwarted by the WVU defense, when the Cowboys reached the Mountaineer nine-yard line. A big10-yard sack of Garman and a missed fi eld goal by Grogan gave the Mountaineers the 14-10 advantage at the half. The strong defensive play by the Mountaineers continued in the second half. OSU would not convert on a third-down play until the middle of the fourth quarter and wound up just two of 15 on third down. The Cowboys turned in yardage, but no points in the fi nal two quarters. Meanwhile, Trickett and the Mountaineer off ense were slowly putting the game out of reach. WVU added a 39-yard Josh Lambert fi eld goal in the third quarter, and a 43-yarder from Lambert for a 20-10 lead with 10:14 left in the game.
When the Cowboys went on the off ensive again to try to close the gap, Henry turned his second interception of the game into a 52-yard touchdown and essentially put the game away. Dreamius Smith added an insurance score with just over 3:00 left, when he scampered 40 yards for a touchdown, putting the fi nal score at 34-10 in favor of the road team. Trickett was a solid 21-of-30 passing for 238 yards and two scores. Smallwood, subbing for the injured Rushel Shell, turned in his second straight 100-yard rushing performance with 132 yards on 23 carries, and Alford fi nished with seven catches for 136 yards. Leading the way for the WVU defense was safety Karl Joseph with eight tackles, followed by linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski with seven stops and lineman Kyle Rose with six. Oklahoma State got 242 yards passing from Garman, but he had 20 incompletions on his stat line. Hill fi nished with 78 yards rushing, while James Washington caught fi ve passes for 87 yards. The Cowboy defense was led by Jordan Sterns with an impressive 20 tackles and one TFL. Final numbers showed a very even game as West Virginia gained 210 yards rushing compared to OSU’s 194. Passing numbers had the Mountaineers with 238 to Oklahoma State 242, putting the fi nal off ensive numbers at 448 for West Virginia and 436 for the Cowboys. The win gave West Virginia a second straight victory over Oklahoma State and a 4-2 edge in the all-time series. The victory was also WVU’s sixth of the season, making the Mountaineers bowl eligible after eight games.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 1, 2014) - No. 10/10 TCU and No. 20/22 West Virginia continued their string of exciting games, as the Horned Frogs used a last second fi eld goal to down the Mountaineers, 31-30, in front of 61,190 fans at Milan Puskar Stadium. Since the two teams joined the Big 12 three years ago, the games have been old-fashioned barnburners, as the prior two went to the wire in overtime before the 2014 version was won on the game’s last play. The chilly Nov. 1 Saturday got started in Morgantown early in the morning with ESPN’s College GameDay making its fi rst appearance at WVU since 2011. The Horned Frogs and Mountaineers then gave the ABC television audience a classic back-and-forth Big 12 game. West Virginia started strong and made the most of the game’s opening possession, march-ing 75 yards in 10 plays to score the game’s fi rst touchdown. Key plays were back-to-back 23-yard completions from quarterback Clint Trickett, fi rst to Kevin White to keep the drive alive and then to Mario Alford for the game’s fi rst score and a 7-0 West Virginia lead. The score was Alford’s seventh touchdown of the season. The Mountaineers extended the lead to 10-0 on their next possession. Driving 51 yards in 14 plays, WVU used runs of 11 yards from Wendell Smallwood and 14 yards from Rushel Shell to set up a 21-yard fi eld goal from Josh Lambert with 6:19 remaining in the quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff , West Virginia kicker Michael Molinari used a pooch on-sides kick that the Mountaineers recovered at the TCU 30-yard line. Three plays later, the Mountaineer off ense could not fi nd the end zone, setting up Lambert’s second fi eld goal of the quarter, and his 44-yarder gave West Virginia a 13-0 advantage. The Horned Frogs could have easily been down 21-0, but by holding West Virginia to two fi eld goals, kept themselves in the game and then struck for their fi rst score just before the end of the quarter. Quarterback Trevone Boykin found receiver Deante’ Gray for a 47-yard scoring toss, cutting the TCU defi cit to 13-7 heading into the second stanza. Turnovers and solid defensive play led to a scoreless second quarter, before TCU took the lead at the 9:18 mark of the third. Taking advantage of a Mountaineer fumble, the Horned Frogs drove 27 yards and grabbed a 14-13 lead on Boykin’s two-yard run. Trailing for the fi rst time in the game, West Virginia answered TCU with a score of its own. Fueled by a Dreamius Smith 50-yard run, WVU turned in a 79-yard scoring drive that ended with a fi ve-yard scoring run for Smith and a 20-14 WVU advantage. Smith’s 50-yard scamper was the team’s longest run of the season, and the touchdown marked his third straight game with a rushing score.
Things continued to look good for the Mountaineers on TCU’s next possession, when cornerback Terrell Chestnut forced and returned a Horned Frog fumble 35 yards for a 27-14 lead. TCU didn’t panic and answered before the end of the third by grabbing its second interception to set up a 23-yard run by B.J. Catalon for a 27-21 game heading into the fourth. On its next possession, West Virginia used a 46-yard completion from Trickett to Alford to set up Lambert for a 23-yard fi eld goal and a 30-21 lead. However, the game’s fi nal 10 points were scored by the Horned Frogs. Catalon’s second touchdown came off a six-yard run to pull the Horned Frogs to within two at 30-28, before the TCU defense turned in big stops to give the ball back to its off ense. TCU used the last 2:07 of the game to drive 56 yards, and Jaden Oberkrom’s 37-yard fi eld goal was good as time expired to lift the Horned Frogs to the 31-30 victory. Before the fi nal fi eld goal, TCU trailed for all but 2:27 in the game, but its defense and fi ve Mountaineer turnovers kept the Horned Frogs in position to win it at the end. Final totals showed West Virginia with 195 yards rushing and 162 yards passing to total 357 yards of total off ense. TCU’s totals fi nished out at 223 yards rushing and 166 passing for 389 yards of off ense. With the win, TCU evened the series with West Virginia at 2-2 with the road team winning the last three games.
