Thank you for considering your undergraduate studies with our Faculty, home of the liberal arts at the University of Pretoria. By choosing one of our programmes, you will enter a stimulating environment that will broaden your intellectual horizons, and help you achieve personal and professional success through the best possible learning experience.

As the most diverse Faculty at the University, we offer an exciting range of programmes and discipline-based majors, including studies in languages, social sciences and visual and performing arts. The BA-programme offers students the opportunity to select and combine their core and elective modules from a range of disciplines. Other programmes specify either partially or fully the modules that students need to take to specialise in a chosen field. The vast offerings in the Faculty can be daunting and students are advised to seek guidance from lecturers in

the Faculty to assist them in considering all aspects carefully before making a final decision on the most appropriate choice for their interests and career ambitions.

Areas of study span the breadth and depth of the human experience. We are home to 17 academic departments, two teaching and research units, five centres, an institute and a psychology clinic. We offer programmes across disciplines that bring together ideas and practice, in a place where you will think hard about what you stand for. A rich array of choices

awaits you to prepare you with knowledge and skills to become capable of making sense of the world and ready for a lifetime of learning.

Undergraduate programmes

Important information on undergraduate programmes for 2018

� Candidates are advised to apply early, due to limited space availability in all programmes. As soon as a programme reaches its full capacity, applications of the specific programme will be closed before the official closing date.

� The following persons will be considered for admission: a candidate who is in possession of a certificate that is deemed by the University to be equivalent to the required Grade 12 certificate with university endorsement; a candidate who is a graduate from another recognised tertiary institution or has been granted the status of a graduate of such an institution; and a candidate who is a graduate of another faculty at the University of Pretoria.

� Candidates who comply with the minimum subject requirements and achievement levels as well as the APS requirements of these programmes will be granted placement in the programmes, subject to the availability of space. The abovementioned is not applicable to selection programmes.

� To retain admission, learners will be expected to obtain an APS of at least 28 in Grade 12, except BA (Speech-Language Pathology), BA (Audiology) and BSocSci (Philosophy, Politics and Economics). The required APS for these three programmes is 32 in order to retain admission. Prospective students who have already been granted provisional admission in these programmes, but obtained at least an APS of 26 or 27 in Grade 12, will be considered by the Admissions Committee should space be available. The Admissions Committee of the Faculty of Humanities will consider these students once the results of the National Benchmark Test (NBT) are available and depending on the availability of space. The NBT is not applicable to selection programmes. Candidates who apply for selection programmes or BA (Law) are required to meet the minimum admission requirements.

� Applicants who meet the minimum APS requirement, but who do not comply with the subject requirements must write the NBT. � The Faculty will assess satisfactory performance in the NBT in the light of its commitment to ensure that an appropriate proportion of

the applicants will be drawn from the disadvantaged category of the population. � Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS.

Foundation Programme in Social Sciences and Humanities

The Faculty is considering the introduction of a four-year Foundation programme in Social Sciences and Humanities for applicants who have achieved an APS of 26 to 29 in Grade 11; who have met the minimum requirements of the National Benchmark Test (NBT); and have been selected into the programme by the Admissions Committee of the Faculty of Humanities.

‘Serving as Chairperson of the Executive Committee of House Humanities during a term in which UP students truly grew a voice was one of the biggest learning experiences of my life. I was able to manage it all thanks to a great team and by the way in which the Faculty has shaped me as an individual. As a BA (Law) student, I was taught to dive into the content of matters at hand, which is a vital tool in any situation, as humanities is about discovering the essence of humankind. This matter was important to the Executive Committee of 2015/16. We spearheaded various initiatives, such as food drives for students in need and an opportunity for students to interact through the First-year Braai.’

Many of the careers indicated under other programmes can be recommended to students who choose the BA, because it is often possible to choose the same majors and elective modules in this programme as one can in the more structured programmes. Students should approach the academics in the Faculty for advice.Please note that students, who wish to follow a career as a psychologist after completion of the BA degree, should complete a BA degree with psychology as a major as well as the BSocSciHons (Psychology) and the MA (Clinical or Counselling Psychology). Careers: Clinical, counselling (sport and community) and research psychologist, registered counsellor or registered psychometrist.

Students who have been provisionally selected for BMus must undergo another practical selection test. The date of this selection will take place in consultation with the programme coordinator. ‘The complexity of studying and exploring the way we, as humans, live and behave fascinates me. The BDram degree allowed me to grow, gain knowledge, interact with others and build friendships. It provided me with various skills and I was exposed to many facets of the field. I was part of ENACTUS UP and the Student Academic Readiness Questionnaire (STARS) Mentorship Programme, which are both inspirational programmes. I could meet people from other faculties, work in team settings and improve my mentorship skills. I am currently studying towards an honours degree in Psychology.

I would like to pursue my studies and love for psychology to become a clinical psychologist. My passion for the arts has also contributed to my dream of working in the entertainment industry, as I believe that it can be used as a platform to help, educate and inspire others.’

Postgraduate studiesSince the programme allows for two core disciplines, students have more than one option for postgraduate study. Therefore students have an alternative, should they not comply with the selection requirements for postgraduate study in a specific discipline. With good planning, students who complete the BA programme have an equal chance of being selected for postgraduate studies in a particular subject as those who enrol for the more specialised programmes.

What does the programme entail?This programme is aimed at acquiring in-depth knowledge of normal speech and language processes within the framework of human communication (infants, children to adults).

The possible causes and symptomatology of speech, voice and language disorders, as well as the scientific basis of intervention in the case of a person with a speech and/or language disorder or those at risk of developing such pathology, are included. Therapy (intervention) can occur in a one-on-one situation, through group therapy, as part of a multidisciplinary team approach, or by means of community-based intervention programmes. Why a programme in the Humanities?A variety of disciplines and programmes equip students for a wide range of professions. Specialised and more general training programmes develop high-level critical thinking skills and the capacity to communicate effectively in the world of work. The lecturers who teach in the Faculty are all specialists in their respective fields.

The Faculty modifies its undergraduate and postgraduate offerings from time to time with a view to remaining competitive on both the national and international tertiary education fronts.

BA – Bachelor of ArtsWhat does the programme entail? The BA degee is chosen by more students than any other programme. It is adaptable enabling students to explore disciplines and to proceed with those most appropriate to their interests and abilities.

ProgrammeAt first-year level Academic Information Management (AIM) and Academic Literacy (ALL) are fundamental modules (compulsory). In compiling their programmes students have an extraordinarily wide choice. See page 6 of this brochure or the alphabetical list of modules in the Faculty’s Yearbook at www.up.ac.za/yearbooks. Students determine the focus of their studies (normally the two majors taken up to the third year level) as well as the supporting subjects they decide to include in the programme.

� First year: Select four disciplines and complete two semester modules from each discipline plus one module of at least six credits.

� Second year: At the beginning of the second year of study decide which three of the four disciplines completed at first-year level will be continued with for the full year.

� Third year: Select any two of the three disciplines completed at second-year level and complete two semester modules from each. Note that students need not decide on these two core disciplines at the beginning of their first year of study, but have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with disciplines before deciding on the focus for their final year (and possibly for postgraduate studies).

With a view to postgraduate studies, students choosing psychology as core discipline have to include research at second-year and third-year level in their BA programme.

Modules from other faculties may be included in the BA programme on the following conditions: Only two at first-year level and one of these at second- and third-year level.

What does the programme entail?This programme meets specific training needs that emerge from the demand for employees with a specific knowledge of law, but who are also schooled in aspects of the social or human sciences. The aim of this multidisciplinary programme is to train students as law practitioners with a broader academic background, to provide an alternative route to obtaining an LLB, to provide versatile training in both law and the social sciences or humanities, to improve students’ insight into the extent, consequences and handling of national and global issues, and to academically equip students for a career in which research, decision-making and reporting on law-related issues are important requirements. The programme is offered on a full-time basis, with certain modules offered after hours.

What does the programme entail?The programme entails theoretical and professional training that leads to a professional career in social work. The social work discipline studies social systems and promotes the social wellbeing of people in interaction with their environments. Learning outcomes of the programme include the following: � knowledge, skills and values that uphold social justice and

human rights; � enhance the social functioning of individuals, families, groups

and communities; � advocate for the removal of structural causes of poverty,

inequality, oppression, discrimination and social exclusion; � guide developmental social work services to individuals,

families, groups, organisations and communities; � inform social work services to protect those who are vulnerable,

part of high-risk groups and unable to protect themselves; � address social needs and issues in the South African social

welfare policy and legislation context; and � influence and develop social policy.

What does the programme entail?This programme focuses on tourism as one of South Africa’s largest, most exciting and most rapidly growing industries. The emphasis is on heritage and cultural tourism, but the programme also emphasises those theoretical concepts and approaches that are vital to the tourism industry.

Attention is given to aspects such as tourism as phenomenon, the historical development of tourism, community-based tourism development, the cultural landscape of South Africa, and ethical and authenticity issues, as well as stereotypes of visiting foreign tourists.

What does the programme entail?This programme focuses on international events, how international relations come about, and of what happen in international politics. It also contributes to students’ education as citizens of the country and the world. In a globalising world, international political relations include interstate or government interactions, international organisations and non-state actors. They include political and military matters, and non-political affairs with international implications. International studies include peace, security, development and justice. This programme establishes knowledge and an understanding of international relations, develops the skills necessary to analyse and explain world politics at a national, regional and global level. The programme is based on the political sciences and related disciplines. International relations is the major subject and has to be taken up to the final year. People differ in their understanding of international relations, and the discipline of international studies acknowledges this diversity.

Core modulesInternational relations is the major subject with other core modules from political science.

Elective modulesElective modules supplement the understanding of international relations and contribute to the formulation of political values and attitudes. Options include philosophy, geography, history, religion studies, sociology, economics and international languages, providing a measure of flexibility. Apart from coursework, text analyses, individual and group assignments, simulations, case studies and exercises constitute an important part of most of these modules and will enhance students’ knowledge and skills.

Postgraduate studiesThis programme allows students to pursue an honours specialising in international relations, or, depending on their choice of electives, in political science. Various options are available at master’s degree level within the field of international studies. Further studies may culminate in a doctorate in international relations.

BPolSci (Political Studies)

What does the programme entail?Politics is a part of human existence, and social interactions invariably involve political relationships. Politics is important for the creation of a just and humane way of life. Politics includes all aspects of contemporary society that directly or indirectly affect the state, as well as those aspects that have public significance. This programme provides an understanding of politics within state borders. It provides the knowledge and develops the skills necessary to analyse, compare and explain political events, and the impact of politics on society. Political studies take into account a variety of non-political or related influences that have an impact on politics. This programme provides a description of political facts, an explanation of how and why politics occurs, and a prescription of what should happen in the political world.

Core modulesPolitical science constitutes the major subject and has to be taken up to the final year. Other core modules are drawn from international relations.

BSocSci (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) [PPE]

What does the programme entail?A PPE qualification is an internationally recognised ‘brand’, respected for its rigorous training, that immediately gives students entrance into a variety of careers related to economic or political policy making, from journalism to diplomatic service. The PPE programme is an example of the kind of complementary multidisciplinary study that is an integral part of university studies. This qualification will enable students, once they are employed in the public or private sector, to respond in a sensitive, rational, and innovative manner to moral problems and challenges within their politico-economic context.

The purpose of this programme is to provide students with an in-depth knowledge and analytical understanding of contemporary political and economic issues. All three disciplines – political science, philosophy, and economics – focus on the social world and social phenomena, each from a different perspective. The result of combining these perspectives is that students are equipped with an understanding of the moral issues influencing human agency in economic and political contexts.

The subject Professional Art Practice (VIT) is a three-year subject that is offered within the BA (Fine Arts) programme. This subject focuses on the interdependence and interrelationship of the visual arts and industry. Students are given projects that draw their attention to the spaces and situations of their environment including community-based projects, such as public art projects. During the final year (fourth year) a theory module is presented (VKK) highlighting current theoretical research discourses. For this a research paper is prepared and presented.

What does the programme entail?Information design is a career with unusual and challenging opportunities. The successful information designer (visual communication designer) is a professional, highly qualified person who plays a vital role in creating the contemporary visual, spatial and digital environment. A skilled designer can convey meaningful and powerful messages in a variety of media to a range of people.

The functions of information design can be broadly defined in terms of the following four intentions: � Establish visual identities for people, organisations or products. � Visually inform, direct, explain, describe and educate. � Persuade people to change their behaviours. � Create an entertaining, aesthetic or intriguing experience.

Elective modulesThe elective modules supplement the understanding of politics. BA (Fine Arts)

What does the programme entail?BA (Fine Arts) covers a broad spectrum of professional art practices. The two majors of the degree are the studio-based component of art practice, Fine Arts (BKK), and Professional Art Practice (VIT) and a theoretical subject, Visual Culture Studies (VKK).

BA (Fine Arts) is a four-year programme that incorporates training in the disciplines of art practice such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, new media and photography. Once fundamental aspects of these disciplines are mastered, increasingly more challenging goals are set that often require inter- and multidisciplinary skills and knowledge, such as installation art, public art and performance art. The role played by multimedia in the form of projections, video and digital art has also become a major form of expression in the fine arts programme.

The first two years of BKK entail compulsory projects in various media; the third year focuses on personal development of medium, context and content; and in the fourth year, students work towards their first professional exhibition with all the theoretical, professional and practical skills that are associated with an exhibition of good academic quality.

‘The theoretical and practical subjects of the BA (Fine Arts) degree shaped me into the professional artist and young researcher I am today. The course equipped me with a creative and critical mind, which is open to challenges and new opportunities. My work was showcased at various exhibitions and is part of private collections on and off campus. I won the second merit award of the Barclays L’Atelier Art Awards, which led to a residency in Sylt, Germany. I am currently enrolled for a master’s degree in Fine Arts at UP. My dream job is to be a self-sustained artist and lecturer.’

What does the programme entail?This programme is designed for students who already have an advanced level of music skills, and it is aimed to develop specialist music skills and knowledge. Students receive tuition in instrumental or vocal music (classical or jazz). Additionally, students choose elective modules to enhance their music expertise. A non-music subject (mathematics, psychology or a language) can also be chosen which will provide the student with more versatile work opportunities. In the third and fourth years of study, students may specialise in a variety of fields such as solo performance art, musicology, composition, jazz, music education, conducting, or African music. Modules in music therapy and music technology may also be chosen. Both history of music and music theory cover Western classical and jazz/popular styles. Practical instruments can be chosen from any orchestral instrument, voice, piano, organ, harpsichord, recorder, saxophone, and guitar.

What does the programme entail?We are confronted with the visual everywhere: on billboards, TV screens, in cinemas, magazines, newspapers, on the internet, fashion, architecture and in malls. We do not necessarily see more than previous generations (although there is probably more to see), but it is rather a case that we ask different questions about what we see and experience than before. Visual Studies as programme, and Visual Culture Studies as the main subject, enable students to explore the various exciting forms of visual images that surround them on a daily basis. The aim is to promote critical skills by offering direction in the analysis, interpretation and evaluation of various aspects of visual culture, both in a historical and contemporary context. The programme deals with theoretical issues, and students do not need artistic talent to study the course.

‘I studied subjects like Physics, Biology and Mathematics in high school, so it may have surprised some people when I decided to study in the Faculty of Humanities. Obtaining my BA (Visual Studies) degree and completing modules like Philosophy allowed me to explore a new world of knowledge, which equipped me with critical analytical skills and allowed me to communicate assertively. I am currently completing a year-long internship in communications at the South African National Space Agency (SANSA). I hope to continue working at reputable organisations where my skills and abilities are valued.’

BMusHonsAfter completing a three-year degree in music or similar qualification, students qualify to apply for a BMusHons in the following disciplines: Music Education, Music Communication or General Music Studies.

� Programme compilation: Five modules are spread over two years. Compulsory modules include music education: theory and practice, research methodology, and research report: music. Electives include music and early childhood development, technology in music education, theoretical subjects: didactics, African Music, and choral conducting.

� Duration: The duration of the programme is 18 months to two years.

� Presentation method: This programme is presented during three block sessions per year, each lasting one week, which means that students are not required to be on campus on a fulltime basis. Regular electronic correspondence between students and lecturers/supervisors are required to ensure continuous progress.

MMusAfter completing a four-year BMus or a BMusHons degree, students qualify to apply for a MMus in the following disciplines: Musicology, Performing Art, Composition, Music Education, Music Technology or Music Therapy.

What does the programme entail?This programme facilitates and fosters students’ interest, knowledge and skills in the performing arts. It provides them with opportunities to explore academic, artistic, creative and practical aspects of the discipline. Students are provided with opportunities to practise their craft by conceiving, directing and participating in a range of media, including theatre performances and performances for TV, film and radio. The programme focuses on the main disciplines of performance studies, which include physical theatre, directing, performance, digital and new media studies and performing arts management, as well as developmental and educational theatre and drama. Students are also required to study an additional subject offered by the Faculty of Humanities. The choice is open, but the chosen subject should complement and broaden their academic development.

Besides offering skills training and fostering an entrepreneurial mind-set, drama develops the capacity to think strategically, systemically, analytically, critically and creatively; communicate effectively; work as part of a collective; make appropriate decisions; plan, organise and prioritise work; solve problems creatively, obtain and process information; influence others; work effectively with a variety of people; be adaptable; lead projects; develop a strong work ethic and manage time.

The programme has the following major focal points: � Speech and Movement Studies includes both theoretical and

practical components and prepares students for performance by developing their vocal, physical and interpretative skills. Students are introduced to the principles of movement, physical theatre, singing and voice building, and radio as a medium of communication.

� Theatre Studies (TNP and TNT) provides students with the opportunity to integrate their creative, conceptual and performance skills by conceiving, staging and performing theatre, film and TV work. TNP introduces students to the basic techniques of acting, improvisation, various approaches to acting and specialised techniques for stage and camera acting. TNT explores applied theatre technology, stage management, and design for the stage, role play and performance principles and analysis, text analysis in relation to performance, directing and entrepreneurship.

� Drama and Film Studies offers a theoretical understanding of the histories and analysis of drama and film. In this subject, students develop their critical skills and academic potential through research, writing essays and participating in seminars that feed their creative projects.

Drama and Film Studies (DFK) are open to non-drama students. Only drama students participate in performances, with the exception of the student arts festival.

PerformancesThe Drama Department presents a number of productions during the course of the academic year. It also hosts a highly popular arts festival that showcases original work conceived, directed and performed by students. Any student at UP can apply to take part in the festival. The Department facilitates educational drama tours to schools, participates in national arts festivals and has an extensive community theatre component. The Drama Department uses two well-equipped theatres, two rehearsal spaces, a large movement studio, and a radio and digital media studio.

Prof Vasu ReddyDekaan: Geesteswetenskappe

Dankie dat jy dit oorweeg om jou voorgraadse studies by ons Fakulteit, tuiste van die geesteswetenskappe en kunste by die Universiteit van Pretoria, te doen. Deur een van ons programme te kies sal jy ‘n stimulerende omgewing betree wat jou intellektuele horisonne sal verbreed en jou deur middel van die beste moontlike leerervaring sal help om persoonlike en professionele sukses te behaal.

As die mees diverse Fakulteit by die Universiteit bied ons aan jou ‘n opwindende verskeidenheid programme en dissipline-gebaseerde hoofvakke, wat studies in tale, sosiale wetenskappe en visuele en uitvoerende kunste insluit. Die BA-program gee aan studente die geleentheid om hul kern- en keusemodules uit ‘n verskeidenheid dissiplines te kies en saam te stel. Ander programme spesifiseer óf gedeeltelik, óf ten volle watter modules studente moet neem om in ‘n gekose veld te spesialiseer. Die veelomvattende aanbiedings van die Fakulteit kan ‘n mens nogal verbouereerd en verward laat voel

en studente word dus aangeraai om leiding van lektore in die Fakulteit te kry om hulle te help om alle aspekte sorgvuldig in oënskou te neem voordat hulle ‘n finale besluit oor die mees toepaslike keuse vir hul belangstellings en loopbaanvooruitsigte neem.

Die vakgebiede dek die volle omvang van die menslike ervaring. Ons huisves 17 akademiese departemente, twee onderrig- en navorsingseenhede, vyf sentrums, ‘n instituut en ‘n sielkunde-kliniek. Ons programme strek oor dissiplines heen en verenig idees en praktyk in ‘n plek wat jou

lank en hard sal laat dink waarvoor jy staan. Daar is ‘n ryke verskeidenheid keuses wat op jou wag en jou sal toerus met die kennis en vaardighede wat jy nodig het om sin te maak van die wêreld en jou voor te berei op ‘n leeftyd van leer.

Jou toegewyde lektore sal verseker dat jy die beste instrumente ontvang om in diepte te leer. Baccalaureus Artium/Professionele programme

Enkele modules uit ander fakulteite mag by die BA-program ingesluit word op die volgende voorwaardes: Slegs twee op eerstejaarsvlak en een hiervan op tweedejaars- en derdejaarsvlak. Sien die vaklys op bladsy 6 van hierdie brosjure. Die toelatings-vereistes van hierdie vakke is in die jaarboeke van die betrokke fakulteite.

Nagraadse studieAangesien daar twee volledige hoofdissiplines in die program ingesluit is, het studente meer as een opsie vir nagraadse studie. Daar is dus ’n alternatief indien ’n student nie aan die keuringsvereistes vir nagraadse studie in ’n bepaalde dissipline voldoen nie. Met goeie beplanning het studente wat die BA-program voltooi, dieselfde kans om keuring vir nagraadse studie in ’n vak te kry as studente wat vir die meer gerigte programme ingeskryf is.

BA (Spraak-Taalpatologie)

Wat behels die program?Hierdie program is gerig op die verwerwing van indiepte kennis oor normale spraak- en taalprosesse binne die raamwerk van menslike kommunikasie (baba, kind en volwassene).

Die moontlike oorsake en simptomatologie van spraak-, stem- en taalafwykings en die wetenskaplike basis vir intervensie by ’n persoon wat ’n spraak- en/of taalafwyking toon of die risiko loop om so ’n afwyking te hê, word ingesluit. Terapie (intervensie) kan in ’n een-tot-een-situasie, deur groepsterapie, as deel van ’n multidissiplinêre spanbenadering of deur middel van gemeenskapsgebaseerde intervensieprogramme geskied.

Praktiese vaardighede in terapietegnieke vir die verbetering van spraak, stem en taal word aangeleer. Die kwalifikasie voldoen aan internasionale vereistes.

KernmodulesKernmodules sluit anatomie, fisiologie, mediese terminologie, sielkunde, kommunikasiepatologie, neuroanatomie, neurofisiologie, geïntegreerde gesondheidsleieskap, navorsing, oudiologie, spraak-taalpatologie en spraakwetenskap in.

Waarom ’n program in die Geesteswetenskappe?’n Verskeidenheid dissiplines en programme rus studente toe vir ’n verskeidenheid beroepe. Gespesialiseerde en meer algemene opleidingsprogramme ontwikkel hoëvlak kritiese denkvaardighede en die vermoë om doeltreffend te kommunikeer in die werks-omgewing. Die dosente wat in die Fakulteit onderrig gee, is spesialiste op hulle onderskeie vakgebiede.

Die Fakulteit pas sy voor- en nagraadse onderrigaanbod van tyd tot tyd aan om mededingend te bly in beide die nasionale en internasionale tersiêre onderrig-arenas.

Studente wat registreer vir programme wat deur hierdie Fakulteit aangebied word, sal in staat wees om die volgende te doen: � hulself met vakspesifieke kennis, insig en vaardighede toe

te rus; � analitiese vaardighede te ontwikkel wat in sowel die Suid-

BA – Baccalaureus ArtiumWat behels die program?Die BA-graad word deur meer studente gekies as enige ander program. Dit is aanpasbaar en bied aan studente ’n geleentheid om vakke te verken en om te besluit watter van hierdie vakke die geskikste is vir hulle belangstellings en vermoëns namate hulle vorder.

ProgramDie enigste verpligte (fundamentele) modules op eerstejaarsvlak is die Akademiese Inligtingbestuur (AIM)-toets en akademiese geletterdheid. Studente het ’n besonder wye keuse in die samestelling van hul programme. Elkeen besluit self wat sy/haar studiefokus is (normaalweg die twee hoofvakke wat tot op derdejaarsvlak geneem word) en watter ondersteunende vakke in die program ingesluit word. Sien die dissiplines op bladsy 6 van hierdie brosjure of die alfabetiese lys van modules in die Fakulteit se Jaarboek by www.up.ac.za/jaarboeke.

� Eerste jaar: Kies enige vier dissiplines en voltooi twee semestermodules uit elke dissipline plus een module van ten minste ses krediete.

� Tweede jaar: Kies enige drie van die vier dissiplines wat op eerstejaarsvlak geneem is vir die volle duur van die jaar.

� Derde jaar: Kies enige twee van die drie dissiplines wat op tweedejaarsvlak voltooi is en voltooi twee semestermodules van elk. Let daarop dat studente nie aan die begin van hul eerste studiejaar al op dié twee kerndissiplines hoef te besluit nie, maar die geleentheid het om die dissiplines te verken voordat daar op ’n studiefokus vir die finale jaar (en moontlike nagraadse studie) besluit word.

Studente wat sielkunde as kerndissipline kies, moet, met die oog op nagraadse studie, ook navorsing op die tweede- en derdejaarsvlak in hulle BA-programme insluit.


Professionele programme

wat tot ’n professionele loopbaan in maatskaplike werk lei. Die maatskaplikewerkdissipline bestudeer maatskaplike sisteme en bevorder die maatskaplike welsyn van mense in hul interaksie met hul omgewings. Die leeruitkomste van die program sluit die volgende in: � kennis, vaardighede en waardes wat maatskaplike geregtigheid

en menseregte bevorder; � bevordering van die maatskaplike funksionering van individue,

gesinne, groepe en gemeenskappe; � voorspraak vir die verwydering van strukturele oorsake van

armoede, ongelykheid, onderdrukking, diskriminasie en sosiale uitsluiting;

� rig ontwikkelingsgerigte maatskaplike werk dienste aan individue, gesinne, groepe, organisasies en gemeenskappe;

� die voorsiening van maatskaplike werk dienste ten einde mense te beskerm wat kwesbaar is, in ’n hoërisiko-groep val en nie in staat is om hulself te beskerm nie;

� spreek maatskaplike behoeftes en kwessies in die konteks van die Suid-Afrikaanse maatskaplike welsynsbeleid en -wetgewing aan; en

� beïnvloed en ontwikkel die maatskaplike beleid.

BA (Regte)

Wat behels die program?Die program voorsien in spesifieke opleidingsbehoeftes wat voortvloei uit die behoefte aan werknemers wat oor bepaalde regskennis beskik, maar ook in aspekte van die sosiale of geesteswetenskappe geskool is. Die doel van hierdie multi-dissiplinêre program is om persone as regspraktisyns met ’n breër akademiese agtergrond op te lei, om ’n alternatiewe

BA (Oudiologie)


Wat behels die program?Hierdie program is gerig op die verwerwing van diepgaande kennis oor die normale gehoorproses binne die raamwerk van menslike kommunikasie. Die program behels opleiding in oudiometrie, sowel as gehoorterapie vir persone van alle ouderdomme met gehoorverlies. Die moontlike oorsake van gehoorverlies en die wetenskaplike grondslag vir intervensie by ’n persoon wat gehoorverlies het, of die risiko loop om gehoorverlies op te doen, word ingesluit.

Assessering sluit sifting of diagnostiese oudiometrie in. Terapie (intervensie) kan in ’n een-tot-een-situasie, binne groepsverband, as deel van ’n multidissiplinêre spanbenadering of deur middel van gemeenskapsgebaseerde intervensieprogramme geskied. Praktiese vaardighede in evaluasie, gehoorterapie en tegnieke vir die verbetering van mondelinge en algemene kommunikasievaardighede word aangeleer. Die kwalifikasie voldoen aan internasionale vereistes.

BMW – Baccalaureus in Maatskaplike Werk

Wat behels die program?Hierdie program behels teoretiese en professionele opleiding

‘Plaasmuis het by Stadsmuis gaan kuier. Dit was ’n vierjaar-“kuier” vol uitdagings, nuwe mense en baie vriende. By UP het ek geleer dat maatskaplike werk ’n rigting is wat jou nie net leer hoe om met mense te werk nie, maar ook hoe om in jou eie lewe te werk te gaan met keuses en etiek. UP het geleenthede geskep waar ons baie praktiese ondervinding opgedoen het. Te danke aan die ongelooflike mense om my het ek geleer om by kenners kers op te steek en myself uit te leef. ‘n Uitnodiging om deel te word van die Golden Key International Honour Society in 2013, laataande met baie koffie, besonderse dosente en die wil om

’n verskil in mense se lewens te maak was alles deel van my UP-ervaring. Na vier goeie jare by UP, het ek teruggekeer na die platteland om dit wat ek geleer het uit te leef.’

Baccalaureus in Sosiale Wetenskappe – BSocSci

BSocSci (Bedryfsosiologie en Arbeidstudies)

Wat behels die program?Die doel van hierdie program is om aan studente diepgaande kennis van die breër sosio-politieke en sosio-ekonomiese konteks van die werksomgewing te verskaf. Studente sal nie slegs die wesenlike kennis van bedryfsosiologie rakende aspekte van bestuur, organisasie en arbeid bestudeer nie, maar sal ook vaardighede verwerf om die vele kwessies rakende die werksomgewing binne die konteks van die transformerende Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing krities te evalueer. Kwessies soos stakings, produktiwiteit, geslag, afdankings en die wêreldekonomie word binne die breër sosiale konteks van die wêreldmilieu beskou.

KernmodulesDie kernvak is sosiologie, waarby bedryfsosiologie en globalisering ingesluit is en wat tot op finalejaarsvlak geneem moet word. Ander kernmodules sluit arbeidsreg, inleiding tot die reg, ekonomie en besigheidsbestuur in. ’n Wye verskeidenheid keusemodules is beskikbaar om die program te ondersteun en ’n beter begrip daarvan te ontwikkel.

KeusemodulesUit die keusemodules moet drie BA-vakke gekies word op eerstejaarsvlak, waarvan ten minste een ’n taal moet wees; twee BA-vakke moet gekies word tot op tweedejaarsvlak, waarvan ten minste een ’n taal moet wees; en een BA-vak moet gekies word tot op derdejaarsvlak.

Nagraadse studieNa voltooiing van BA (Regte) kan studente met die LLB voortgaan, of vir ’n honneursgraad registreer in die vak wat as hoofvak in die geesteswetenskappe gekies is.

Gespesialiseerde programmeBaccalaureus Artium in Tale

BA (Tale)

Wat behels die program?BA (Tale) rus studente toe met geïntegreerde kommunikasie-vaardighede en kennis van die taalkunde, letterkunde en kultuur van ten minste twee tale van hulle eie keuse. Studente kan enige van die volgende tale as hoofvakke neem: Afrikaans, Engels, Duits, Frans, Nederlands, Portugees, Spaans, Zulu, Ndebele, Sepedi, Grieks, Hebreeus en Latyn. Verder kan studente naas hierdie hoofvakke nog tale en/of modules uit enige ander vakgebied in die Fakulteit kies.

‘Ek het die BA (Tale)-graad met hoofvakke in Afrikaans en Duits voltooi. Die Fakulteit Geesteswetenskappe bied soveel meer as wat ‘n mens verwag. Alhoewel ek vir ’n BA (Tale)-graad ingeskryf het, het ek ook Sosiologie as vak gehad. Dit het my gehelp om mense en menseverhoudings beter te verstaan. Ek was in 2014 een van die top studente in Duits en het ook in my eerstejaar ’n toekenning vir die beste student in Duits vir beginners ontvang, wat vir my die geleentheid gebied het om aan die Tübingen-Suid-Afrika uitruilprogram deel te neem. Dit het ’n groot impak op my gehad, want ek het besef hoe

uniek Suid-Afrika is. Ek het in 2015 die Media24-beurs ontvang. Ek is tans besig met ‘n honneursgraad in Joernalistiek aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch. My droomwerk is om ’n nuusleser vir die nasionale uitsaaier te wees.’

KernmodulesEkonomie, Filosofie, Politiek en Statistiek

KeusemodulesJaarvlak 1: Kies enige twee semestermodules (een per semester) van dieselfde dissipline op jaarvlak 1 met ’n kredietwaarde van ten minste 20 (indien gekies uit die Fakulteit Ekonomiese- en Bestuurswetenskappe) of 24 krediete (indien gekies uit die Fakulteit Geesteswetenskappe). Studente wat dit oorweeg om vir ’n honneurs in Ekonomie in te skryf, moet die studenteadministrasie van die Fakulteit Ekonomiese- en Bestuurswetenskappe kontak om te bepaal watter addisionele modules hulle in hul program moet insluit om aan die toelatingsvereistes vir BComHons in Ekonomie te voldoen.

Tweede jaar

KernmodulesEkonomie, Staatsleer of Internasionale Verhoudinge en FilosofieStudente wat met ’n honneursgraad in Ekonomie wil voortgaan, moet voorgeskrewe modules op tweedejaarsvlak in Statistiek en op derdejaarsvlak in Ekonomie voltooi.

Derde jaar

KernmodulesEkonomie, Filosofie, Staatsleer of Internasionale Verhoudinge en Statistiek. Studente wat met ’n honneursgraad in Ekonomie wil voortgaan, moet voorgeskrewe modules op tweedejaarsvlak in Statistiek en op derdejaarsvlak in Ekonomie voltooi.

Nagraadse studieMet hierdie kwalifikasie kan studente aansoek doen om tot die PPE-honneursgraad toegelaat te word, waarna die toepaslike meesters- en doktorale studies volg.

Baccalaureus in Politieke Wetenskappe – BPolSci

BPolSci (Internasionale Studies)

Wat behels die program?Hierdie program fokus op internasionale gebeure, hoe internasionale verhoudinge tot stand kom, en wat in wêreldwye politiek gebeur. Dit dra ook by tot studente se opvoeding as lands- en wêreldburgers.

In ’n globaliserende wêreld sluit internasionale politieke verhoudinge, tussenstaatse en regeringsinteraksies, asook betrekkinge met nie-staatsrolspelers in. Dit sluit politieke en militêre aangeleenthede, asook nie-politieke betrekkinge met internasionale implikasies in. Internasionale studies is omvangryk en behels vrede, veiligheid, ontwikkeling en geregtigheid. Hierdie program verskaf kennis en begrip van internasionale verhoudinge, ontwikkel vaardighede wat nodig is om wêreldpolitiek, die impak daarvan op die samelewing en die veranderinge waaraan dit onderworpe is op nasionale, streeks- en wêreldvlak te ontleed, en te verduidelik. Die program is gebaseer op die politieke wetenskappe en verwante dissiplines met internasionale

Nagraadse studieMet hierdie kwalifikasie kan studente tot die honneursgraad in Sosiologie, met spesialisering in bedryfsosiologie en arbeidstudies, toegelaat word, waarna die toepaslike meesters- en doktorale studies volg.

BSocSci (Erfenis- en Kultuurtoerisme)

Wat behels die program?Hierdie program fokus op toerisme as een van Suid-Afrika se grootste, opwindendste en snelgroeiendste bedrywe. Die klem lê op erfenis- en kulturele toerisme, maar beklemtoon ook die teoretiese begrippe wat vir die toerismebedryf noodsaaklik is. Aspekte waaraan aandag gegee word, sluit toerisme as verskynsel, die historiese ontwikkeling van toerisme, gemeenskapgebaseerde toerisme-ontwikkeling, die kulturele landskap van Suid-Afrika, etiese en outentieke kwessies, asook stereotipes van besoekende buitelandse toeriste in.

KernmodulesAl die modules van die dissipline erfenis- en kultuurtoerisme is verpligtend.

KeusemodulesBenewens erfenis- en kultuurtoerisme, moet die student een van die volgende dissiplines as tweede hoofvak kies: Argeologie, Antropologie, Geskiedenis, Geografie, Visuele Kultuurstudies of ‘n taal. Sommige modules van sekere van hierdie dissiplines is ook verpligtend.

Wat behels die program?’n PPE-kwalifikasie is ’n internasionaal erkende handelsmerk, gerespekteer vir die streng opleiding wat studente onmiddellik toegang gee tot ’n verskeidenheid beroepe wat verband hou met ekonomiese of politieke beleidsbepaling, van joernalistiek tot die diplomatieke diens. Die PPE-program is ‘n voorbeeld van die soort komplimenterende multi-dissiplinêre studie wat integraal deel is van universiteitstudies. Wat behels die program?BA (Beeldende Kunste) dek ’n wye spektrum professionele kunspraktyke. Die twee hoofvakke van die graad is die ateljeegebaseerde komponent van kunspraktyk, Beeldende Kunste (BKK) asook Professionele Kunspraktyk (VIT) en ‘n teoretiese vak, Visuele Kultuurstudies (VKK).

BA (Beeldende Kunste) is ‘n vierjaarprogram wat opleiding in die dissiplines van kunspraktyk, soos skilderkuns, beeldhoukuns, drukkuns, tekenkuns, nuwe media en fotografie, inkorporeer. Sodra die fundamentele aspekte van hierdie dissiplines bemeester is, word toenemend meer uitdagende doelwitte gestel wat dikwels inter- en multidissiplinêre vaardighede en kennis verg, soos installasiekuns, openbare kuns en uitvoerende kuns. Die rol van multimedia in die vorming van projeksies, video en digitale kuns het ook ’n belangrike vorm van uitdrukking in die Beeldende Kunste-program geword.

Die eerste twee jaar van BKK behels verpligte projekte in verskillende media, die derde jaar fokus op persoonlike ontwikkeling van medium, konteks en inhoud; en in die vierde jaar werk studente aan hul eerste professionele uitstalling met al die teoretiese, professionele en praktiese vaardighede wat verband hou met ’n uitstalling van goeie akademiese gehalte.Die vak Professionele Kunspraktyk (VIT) strek oor drie jaar en word in die BA (Beeldende Kunste)-program aangebied. Hierdie vak fokus op die onderlinge afhanklikheid en verhouding van die visuele kunste en die industrie. Studente kry projekte wat hul aandag vestig op die ruimtes en situasies van hul omgewing, wat gemeenskapsgebaseerde projekte soos publieke kunsprojekte insluit.Gedurende die finale jaar (vierde jaar) word ‘n teoretiese module aangebied (VKK) om die huidige teoretiese navorsingsdiskoerse te beklemtoon. BPolSci (Politieke Studies)

Wat behels die program?Politiek is deel van die menslike bestaan en sosiale wisselwerking sluit onvermydelik politieke verhoudings in. Politiek is belangrik vir die skep van ’n regverdige en menslike bestaan. Politiek sluit alle aspekte van die hedendaagse samelewing in wat die staat regstreeks of onregstreeks beïnvloed, asook dié bestaansaspekte wat openbare betekenis het. Hierdie program verskaf kennis van politiek binne landsgrense. Dit bied die kennis en ontwikkel die vaardighede wat nodig is om politiek, en die impak daarvan op die samelewing te ontleed, te vergelyk en te verduidelik. Politieke studies neem ’n verskeidenheid nie-politieke of verwante invloede in ag wat ’n impak op die politiek het. Hierdie program bied ’n beskrywing van politieke feite, ’n verduideliking van hoe en waarom politiek plaasvind en ’n voorskrif vir wat op politieke terrein behoort te gebeur.

Wat behels die program?Hierdie program is saamgestel om spesialisvaardighede in en spesialiskennis van musiek oor te dra. Dit is gerig op studente wat reeds oor gevorderde vaardighede in musiek beskik. Studente ontvang onderrig in instrumentale musiek of sang (klassiek of jazz). Daarbenewens kies studente keusemodules om hul musiekkennis te verbeter. ‘n Nie-musiekvak (wiskunde, sielkunde of ‘n taal) kan ook gekies word, wat die student se keuse van loopbaanmoontlikhede vergroot. In die derde en vierde studiejaar, kan studente spesialiseer in ‘n verskeidenheid van velde soos solo-uitvoerende kuns, musiekwetenskap, komposisie, jazz, musiekonderrig, dirigering, of Afrikaanse musiek. Modules in musiekterapie en musiektegnologie kan ook gekies word. Beide die geskiedenis van musiek en musiekteorie dek Westerse klassieke en jazz-populêre style. Praktiese instrumente kan gekies word uit enige orkesinstrument, stem, klavier, orrel, klavesimbel, blokfluit, saksofoon en kitaar.

Wat behels die program?Inligtingsontwerp is ’n beroep met buitengewone en uitdagende geleenthede. Die suksesvolle inligtingsontwerper (visuelekommunikasie-ontwerper) is ’n professionele, hoogs gekwalifiseerde persoon wat ’n noodsaaklike rol in die skep van die hedendaagse visuele ruimtelike en digitale omgewing speel. ŉ Geskoolde ontwerper kan sinvolle en kragtige boodskappe in ŉ verskeidenheid media aan ŉ verskeidenheid mense oordra.

Die funksies van inligtingsontwerp kan breedweg deur die volgende vier oogmerke beskryf word: � Om ’n visuele identiteit vir mense, organisasies of produkte

BA (Visuele Studies)

Wat behels die program?Ons word oral deur die visuele gekonfronteer: op reklameborde, TV-skerms, in filmteaters, tydskrifte, koerante, op die internet, mode, argitektuur en in winkelsentrums. Ons sien nie noodwendig meer as vorige generasies nie (al is daar dalk meer om te sien), maar dit is meer die geval dat ons ander vrae vra oor wat ons sien en ervaar as ooit te vore.

Visuele Studies as program, en Visuele Kultuurstudies as die hoofvak, stel die student in staat om die verskeidenheid



� Teaterstudies (TNP en TNT) bied aan studente die geleentheid om hulle kreatiewe, konseptuele en optreevaardighede te integreer deur die beplanning, aanbieding en uitvoering van teater-, film- en TV-werk. TNP stel hulle bekend aan die basiese tegnieke van toneelspel, improvisasie, verskillende benaderings tot toneelspel en gespesialiseerde tegnieke vir optrede op die verhoog en voor die kamera. TNT ondersoek toegepaste teatertegnologie, verhoogbestuur, ontwerp vir die verhoog, rollespel en beginsels en ontleding van optrede, teksontleding met betrekking tot optrede, regie en entrepreneurskap.

� Drama- en Filmkunde bied ’n teoretiese begrip van die geskiedenis en ontleding van drama en film. In hierdie vak ontwikkel studente hul kritiese vaardighede en akademiese potensiaal deur navorsing, die skryf van essays en deelname aan seminare wat hul kreatiewe projekte aanvul. Drama- en Filmkunde (DFK), is oop vir nie-dramastudente. Slegs dramastudente neem deel aan opvoerings (die studentekunstefees uitgesluit).

OpvoeringsGedurende die akademiese jaar voer die Dramadepartement verskeie produksies op. Die Departement bied ook ’n baie gewilde kunstefees aan waartydens oorspronklike studentewerk geskep, geregisseer en opgevoer word. Enige student aan UP kan aansoek doen om aan die fees deel te neem. Die Departement fasiliteer opvoedkundige dramatoere na skole, neem deel aan nasionale kunstefeeste en het ’n bedrywige gemeenskapsteaterkomponent. Die Dramadepartement gebruik twee goed toegeruste teaters, repetisie-areas, ’n groot bewegingsateljee, en ’n radio- en digitalemedia-ateljee.

BDram – Baccalaureus in Drama


Wat behels die program?Hierdie program fasiliteer en ontwikkel studente se belangstelling, kennis en vaardighede in die uitvoerende kunste. Dit bied aan hulle geleenthede om akademiese, artistieke, kreatiewe en praktiese aspekte van die vakgebied te verken. Studente kry geleenthede om hul vaardighede in te oefen deur produksies vir verskeie media, waaronder teater, TV, film en radio, te skep, te regisseer en daarin te speel. Die program fokus op die vernaamste dissiplines van opvoeringstudies, wat bewegingsteater, regie, spel, digitale en nuwemediastudies, die bestuur van die uitvoerende kunste, asook ontwikkelingsgerigte en opvoedkundige teater en drama insluit. Studente moet ’n bykomende vak neem wat deur die Fakulteit Geesteswetenskappe aangebied word. Hulle het ’n vrye keuse, maar die gekose vak moet hulle akademiese ontwikkeling aanvul en verbreed.

Afgesien van die vaardigheidsopleiding en entrepreneurise ingesteldheid wat drama kweek, ontwikkel dit die kapasiteit om strategies, sistematies, analities, krities en kreatief te dink; om effektief te kommunikeer; as deel van ‘n geheel te werk; toepaslike keuses te maak; om werk te beplan, te organiseer en te prioritiseer; om probleme kreatief op te los; om inligting te versamel en te verwerk; om ander te beïnvloed; om effektief saam met ŉ verskeidenheid mense te werk; om aanpasbaar te wees; om projekte te lei; om ŉ sterk werksetiek te ontwikkel en om tyd effektief te bestuur.

‘I was lectured by some of the country’s most outstanding academics in fields such as diplomacy, international political economy, security and strategic studies, political science and international relations. After my BAHons (Political Sciences), I want to enrol for a master’s degree in Military Science. My medium-term career goal is to work for a global firm as a political risk analyst and conflict researcher and long-term goal to be a Zimbabwean diplomat. I was awarded the 2016 Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, invited to join the Golden Key International Honour Society and nominated to attend the 2015

and 2016 International Scholar Laureate Programme in China. I won second place in the African Armed Forces journal article writing contest and served in various student leadership roles.’

‘The BMus degree I obtained allowed me to pursue my passion for making music. My instrument lecturers helped me to take my skills to a higher level, while my academic lecturers provided me with a good knowledge of music history and theory in an environment that encourages critical thinking and discussion. I am currently pursuing an MMus (Performing Arts) degree and I work as an accompanist. I am also part of a piano trio. My dream job is to be a concert pianist who specialises in chamber music.’
