• A brief history of FASTI Online

• Some challenges along the way

• The latest greatest FASTI

• Some more challenges..

Re-introducing

Page 3: Fasti & Furious: (re)Introducing FASTI Online

• FASTI Archaeologici: 1946 - 1987

• A mechanism for Institutes in Rome to publish their findings on digs throughout the Mediterranean

• Managed by AIAC (International Association for Classical Archaeology)

• ‘Interventions’ published in note form in giant books for institute libraries

• Paper publication was discontinued in 1998 by board of directors

A brief history of

Page 4: Fasti & Furious: (re)Introducing FASTI Online

• In 2003 AIAC, with development by L - P : Archaeology, launched FASTI Online

• Originally funded by Packard Humanities Institute (PHI)

• FASTI FOLD&R was launched in 2004

• v2.0 was launched in 2007, and v3.0 is soon to be launched in 2012

A brief history of

The Birth

Page 5: Fasti & Furious: (re)Introducing FASTI Online

FASTI Online had to be:

• Multi-lingual.

• Spatial.

• Temporal.

• Focused.

A brief history of

Considerations

Page 6: Fasti & Furious: (re)Introducing FASTI Online

• v1.0 written from scratch..

• ARK : The Archaeological Recording Kit

• Open source, runs on Apache, MySQL, PHP with WFS/WMS capabilities

• Under development by L - P since 2004

Some challenges

• Administering multi-lingual capabilities whilst keeping the site up to date

• Maintaining highly customised code within the ARK architecture

• Using and updating big spatial data sets

• Facilitating discoverability and connectivity to other resources

Some ideas

Page 13: Fasti & Furious: (re)Introducing FASTI Online

(More) challenges

• Google Maps and fuzzy locators

• Relevance and utility. Is linked data useful for FASTI?

• Periodization. (Spatial-Temporal)

• Funding and questions of sustainability.

Some thoughts

• Resource discoverability and open content the way forward. FASTI is fulfilling a role.

• Recent (upcoming) strides made in arena of spatial temporal representation

• University hosting in the works, and ARK is here to stay!
