IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Understanding the IssuesMetal fasteners will corrode and may lose load-carrying capacity when installedin corrosive environments or exposed to corrosive materials. There are manyenvironments and materials which may cause corrosion including ocean salt
air, fire-retardants, fumes, fertilizers, preservative-treated wood, de-icing salts, dissimilar metals, and other corrosive elements.
The many variables present in a single building environment make it impossibleto accurately predict if, or when, significant corrosion will begin or reach acritical level. This relative uncertainty makes it crucial that specifiers and usersbe knowledgeable of the potential risks and select a product coating or metalsuitable for the intended use. It is also important that regular maintenance andperiodic inspections are performed, especially for outdoor applications.
It is common to see some corrosion especially in outdoor applications. Evenstainless steel can corrode. The presence of some corrosion does not meanthat load capacity has necessarily been affected or that a failure will occur. If significant corrosion is apparent or suspected, then the wood, fastenersand connectors should be inspected by a qualified professional engineer orqualified general contractor and may need to be replaced.
Preservative-treated wood formulations have changed significantly, and someof the new formulations are more corrosive to steel connectors and fastenersthan the traditionally used formulation of CCA-C. Simpson Strong-Tie testing
has shown that ACQ-C, ACQ-D (Carbonate) and CA-B treated woods areapproximately 2 times more corrosive than CCA-C, while SBX-DOT(Sodium Borate) treated woods were shown to be less corrosive than CCA-C.(See technical bulletin T-PTWOOD for details).
Due to the many different preservative-treatment formulations, fluctuatingretention levels, moisture content, and because the formulations may varyregionally, or change without warning, understanding which fasteners touse with these materials has become a complex task. We have attemptedto provide basic knowledge on the subject here, but it is important to fullyeducate yourself by reviewing our technical bulletins on the topic, and alsoby viewing information and literature provided by others. Additionally, becausethe issue is evolving it is important to get the very latest information on thetopic by visiting our website at www.strongtie.com/info.
Types 304/305/316 stainless-steel, copper and silicone-bronze fastenersare the most effective solution to corrosion risk. However, they are moreexpensive and sometimes more difficult to obtain. To best serve ourcustomers, Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. is evaluating the options toidentify the safest and most cost-effective solutions. Based on our testingand experience there are some specific applications that are appropriate forN2000, mechanically galvanized (C3, N2000, Class 55), double barrier andQuik Guard coated fasteners (see page 11).
General Simpson Strong-Tie RecommendationsOutdoor environments are generally more corrosive to steel. If you chooseto use N2000, mechanically galvanized (C3, N2000, Class 55), double barrierand Quik Guard coated fasteners on an outdoor project (i.e. deck), youshould periodically inspect your fasteners or have a professional inspectionperformed. Regular maintenance including water-proofing of the wood usedin your outdoor project is also a good practice.
For preservative-treated lumber used above ground, with actual retentionlevels higher than 0.05 pcf for CA-C, 0.06 pcf for MCA and CA-C, 0.08 forCA-B, 0.15 pcf for MCQ and 0.2 pcf for ACQ, types 304/305/316 stainless-steel, copper or silicone bronze fasteners are recommended.
Testing indicates wood installed dry reduces potential corrosion. If dry woodis used, see our website for additional information.
Due to the many variables involved, Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. cannotprovide estimates on service life of connectors, anchors or fasteners. Wesuggest that all users and specifiers also obtain recommendations for N2000,mechanically galvanized (C3, N2000, Class 55), double barrier and Quik Guardcoated fasteners, or other coatings from the treated-wood supplier for thetype of wood used. However, as long as Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc.recommendations are followed, Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. standsbehind its product performance and our standard warranty (page 9)applies.

Guidelines for Selecting the Proper Fastener Coating/Material
Minimum Coating or Material Recommendation
1. Evaluate the Application.Consider the type of connection and how critical it is. Theserecommendations may not apply to non-structural applications suchas fences.
2. Evaluate the Environment.
Testing and experience indicate that indoor dry environments are lesscorrosive than outdoor environments. Determining the type of environmentwhere a fastener will be used is an important factor in selecting the mostappropriate material and coating for fastener use. To help in your decisionmaking, consider the following general exposure information:
Interior Dry Use: Includes wall and ceiling cavities, and raised floorapplications in enclosed buildings that have been designed to ensure thatcondensation and other sources of moisture do not develop.
Exterior: Includes outdoor construction in conditions other than HigherExposure Use.
Higher Exposure Use: Includes exposure to ocean salt air, de-icing salts, fire retardants, large bodies of water (e.g. dock boards), fumes, fertilizers, soil, some preservative-treated woods, industrial zones, acid rain, andother corrosive elements.
3. Evaluate the material to be fastened. When fastening most untreated wood and other common building materials,
additional corrosion risk caused by the fastened material is not a significantfactor. For preservative-treated wood applications, proceed to step fourotherwise proceed to step five.
When fastening dissimilar metals carefully consider the correct combinatiof fastener and material necessary to avoid galvanic corrosion.
4. Familiarize yourself with the preservative-treated wood to befastened. The preservative-treated-wood supplier should provide all of the pertinen
information about the wood being used. This information should include thspecific type of wood treatment used, if ammonia was used in the treatmenand the chemical retention level. If this information is not available, thenSimpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. recommends the use of types 304, 30or 316 stainless steel, copper or silicone-bronze fasteners. It is also advisabto obtain a recommendation from the treated-wood supplier for a fastenecoating or material that is suitable for use with their formulation in theintended environment. If this recommendation differs from those shown the table below, Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. recommends that themost conservative recommendation be followed.
5. Use the chart below, which is based on Simpson Strong-Tietesting and experience, to select the fastener coating or materiaIf the material or preservative-treated wood product to be used is not showon the chart, Simpson Strong-Tie has not evaluated it and cannot makeany other recommendation than the use of coatings/materials shown in the
high category shown below. Manufacturers may independently providetest results or other product use information; Simpson Strong-Tie CompanInc. expresses no opinion regarding such information.
Coating/Material Classification
Low Clear zinc, electrocoating, gray phosphate, black phosphate, heavy zinc electroplate, yellow zinc, type 410 stainless steel
Med Mechanically galvanized (C-3, N2000and class 55), Quik Guard, hot-dip galvanized,double barrier
High Types 304/305/316 stainless steel, copper, silicon bronze

stainless-steel, copper or silicone bronze fasteners are recommended.2. Borate treated woods are not appropriate for outdoor use.
3. Test results indicate that mechanically galvanized (C-3, N2000 and class 55)and Quik Guard will performadequately, subject to regular maintenance and periodic inspection. However, the test protocol followed wasa modified version of the nationally recognized test method AWPA E12-94. This test method is an acceleratedtest, so data over an extended period of time is not available. Also noteworthy is that tests run in a laboratorymay not correlate to service conditions. If uncertain, use types 304/305/316 stainless steel.
4. Some treated wood may have excess surface chemicals making it potentially more corrosive. If you suspectthis or are uncertain, use types 304/305/316 stainless steel, copper or silicon bronze.
5. Ammonia is typically used as a chemical carrier for difficult to treat wood species, such as, but not exclusiveto, Douglas Fir and Hem Fir, which are usually found in the western United States. Amine carriers are used insome of the eastern species, such as Southern Yellow Pine. If uncertain, verify chemical with wood treater.
6. Type 316 stainless-steel fasteners are the minimum recommendation for ocean-salt air and otherchloride environments.

FASTENER OVERVIEW
NAILS
Nail Sizes
The most common method used to represent nail sizes is the penny size, which is a length designation. The size is written with a number andthe abbreviation d for denarius which is Latin for penny. While referring to penny size and type designations such as box or commonis a typical method for calling out nails, it is more accurate and reduces potential confusion if the nail is called out by diameter and length.
Nail Types
Box: A wire nail with a round head, these nails have a smaller shank diameter than common nails of the same penny size.Brads: A common term used for nails less than 1 14" in length with a head slightly larger than the shank. These nails can be easilyconcealed by countersinking below the work surface.Casing: A wire nail with a head that is only slightly larger head than a finish nail, often used for flooring.Common: A common construction wire nail with a round head. Common nails have larger shanks than box nails of the same penny size.Finishing: A wire nail with a head that is only slightly larger than the shank. These nails can be easily concealed by countersinking belowthe work surface.Roofing: A nail used for attaching paper or shingle to roof battens or sheathing; usually with a large flat head.Siding: A wire nail with a shank that is typically 0.99" or less in diameter and a smaller head than other nails of the same size to helpconceal the fastener after installation.
Nail Shank Types
Smooth Shank: There are no deformations on the shank, making nailswith a smooth shank the easiest to drive. Smooth shank nails offer theleast pull-out resistance when compares with screw and ring shanks.
Spiral Shank: A spiral thread on the shank causes the nail to spinduring installation, creating a thread-like interlock with the wood, increasing pull-out capacity. Designed to drive easier into intoharder woods and dense materials while still providing increasedwithdrawal resistance.
Annular Ring Shank: Annular threads or rings are formed on theshank to increase pull out capacity. The rings create an interlockbetween the shank of the nail and the wood, providing superiorholding power. Generally considered the nail type with the bestwithdrawal resistance.

HOW SELF-DRILLING SCREWS WORK
As their name implies, self-drilling screws operate on the same principles as drill bits and other cutting tools. This means that theway in which these screws are used affects their performance as much how they are designed. For cutting tools, the governingfactors of material removal are cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut and the work material itself (see table below for optimal values).
RPM: The speed at which the screwdriver motor runswhile the screw is installed. This is often adjustable usinga variable-pull trigger or different driver motor.
Applied Force: A measure of how hard the user pushesas the screw is installed.
Work Material Hardness: Can be viewed as a materialsresistance to drilling or cutting. In most instances, theharder the work material, the harder it is to cut. Dependingon the application, this may be outside the users control.
Definitions
Screw Drill-Point Material: Typically plain carbon steel which is less stable at high temperature than equivalent high-speed steel (HSS) drill-bits.Reduced Screwdriver-Motor RPM: This may actually decrease installation time by allowing the user to push harder during installation.

Optimal Cutting Perameters by Screw Size
*Suggested maximum values. Stated speeds may require a variable-speed screwdriver motor anda partial trigger-pull. Harder material may require slower speeds and less applied force.
When selecting a self-drilling screw design, it isimportant to consider the material thickness andtype of materials to be joined. There are key designfeatures to consider when selecting a suitablefastener for a specific application.
Drill FluteThe flutes allow drilled material to exit the hole. Once theflutes become completely embedded in the material, theycan no longer remove the chips cut from the work material.Since these chips contain approximately 80% of the heatcreated by the drilling process, this can cause the pointto over-heat and fail.
Point Length
The length of the drill point determines the materialthickness which the screw can reliably penetrate. Theunthreaded portion of the point, known as the pilotsection, must be long enough to completely drill through
the material before the threads engage. Since the threadsadvance faster than the drilling process, if they engagebefore drilling is done the fastener can bind and break.
Fastening Thicker Material to Metal
When fastening thicker materials, such as wood, to metalit is necessary to use a fastener with wings on the shaftor a pilot point. These fasteners are designed to preventseparation of the fastened material from the base metal,a condition known as jacking. Once the wings contactthe metal they break away before the threads engage.
Winged Reamer
Wings ream hole largerthan threads so threadswill not engage wood.
Wings break offwhen they hit steel, then threads engage.
