In 1954, James McLamore and David Edgerton opened their first restaurant in a suburb of Miami, Florida. When they first opened they sold 18 cent broiled hamburgers, sodas, milkshakes, and French fires also. Only 3 years later did they introduce the whopper, costing 37 cents per item. The tow owners later sold the restaurant to the Pillsbury Company in 1967.

In 1958, Dan and Frank Carney opened their first Pizza Hut restaurant by borrowing 600 dollars from their mother. The first Pizza Hut to open was located in Wichita Kansas. The first Pizza Hut sold a large pizza to the public for only 3 dollars a pizza.

Although White Castle was founded in 1921 by Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson, the restaurant didn’t become really popular until the 1950’s. White Castle applied the assembly line techniques, used to build cars in that time, to the kitchen. They were most famous for their White Castle hamburgers, and they were known especially for the cleanliness of their area.

In 1940 Dick and Mac McDonald opened the first McDonald’s Bar-B-Que in San Bernardino, California. The menu when McDonald’s first opened was limited to nine items: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, soft drinks, milk, coffee, potato chips, and a slice of pie. The hamburger, which they were best known for, sold for only 15 cents! Not long after the menu was released, McDonald’s replaced their potato chips with French fries and Triple Think Milkshakes also made their debut.

In 1953, Harold Butler founded Denny’s in Southern California with a commitment to give the best in service, food, beverages, and value. They began to franchise in 1963, and grew quickly. Denny’s is most famous for delivering a real breakfast experience around the clock, all 24 hours of the day. Denny’s is also the home of the famous Grand Slam.

Jack in the Box Inc. was founded in 1951 by Robert Oscar Peterson. The restaurant is best known for being the first fast-food chain to develop and expand the concept of drive-thru dining. Also, most their menu items from the 1950’s are now staples on the most popular fast-food menu boards including a breakfast sandwich and portable salads.

Although Kentucky Fried Chicken was founded in 1930 by Harland Sanders, the restaurant didn’t become really popular until the early or middle of the 1950’s. Sanders opened his first restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. In 1952, Sanders began actively franchising his chicken by traveling and cooking batches of chicken for restaurant owners and employees. Also in that year, Sanders awarded Pete Harman with the first KFC franchise. KFC was best known for its delicious fired chicken.

In 1952, Glen Bell opened his first Bell’s Drive-in. It originally sold hotdogs and hamburgers. As McDonald’s became f=more popular in that areas, Bell began to experiment with taco’s and Mexican food. When he found the right recipe for his taco’s he bought a location in a Mexican part of town and began selling his famous taco’s. The taco’s started selling at only 19 cents a piece. He would sell them at a little window to the side of the restaurant. Later the Bell changed the name of the restaurant to Taco Bell, known for it’s delicious taco’s.
