Enviros Launches the FASD quarterly times
Goal of the Newsletter:
Often times, sifting through the maze of community resources, events, and
services can be overwhelming, challenging and time consuming. With this in
mind the FASD team decided to create a quarterly newsletter that will highlight
important community events, upcoming training and provide tips for continued
success. Your feedback is important to us. If you have comments or
suggestions for future newsletters, please contact Shauna Parks at

1. Set upa Record or file system with this years
information and make copies for your records.
2. Meet
with the teacher/principal to discuss your childs strengths and challenges.
3. Prepare for change:
Familiarize your child with anything new by doing a visual schedule/calendar. You can also help
prepare your child for changes by starting a count down to the first day of school.

Do a school and classroom tour to prepare your child for new environment and decrease anxiety.

As you shop for school supplies create a shopping list of goals you would like to see this on your
childs IPP (individualized Program Planning). Over the summer months you may have noticed a few
changes in your childs development; be sure to write a list of anynoticeable changes so you can discuss it with the IPP team.
7. Review Medical Records:
Set up doctors and dentist appointments for the upcoming school year
ahead of time. If your child has any other regular appointments or
programs be sure to schedule them as well i.e. counseling, therapist,
recreation activities.
8. Prepare for transportation:
Chart out a route to school or the school bus. If the child is going to a
new school, take a dry run a few days before school starts. Go over the
rules of stranger awareness and traffic safety.
9. Relax!!!!
Stay positive that your child will have a successful school year. Also,
remember that you know and advocate for your child the best. Establish
communication early to develop a positive relationship with your childs
teacher and school.

Tips for Teachers:
Remember that proper seating placement in the
classroom can be vital! Is there a spot in the classroom
that has the least amount of distractions?
Give lots of warning when transitioning from one activity
or subject to the next. For kids that struggle with
transition time, a visual schedule on their desk or on the
blackboard can really help!
Some kids may have severe deregulation and would
actually benefit from being able to use a toy at their desk.
There are lots of great computer programs that can assist
in enhancing communication. Using voice to textprograms (such as the Dragon Dictation Program) is a
small way of modifying in class work that can make a
huge difference for a child with FASD.
