    Fas and fox operation

The main purpose of FAS and FOX is to help the user to choose which

frequency range is more suitable for a GSM cell.

FAS and FOX measure the uplink interference and estimate the

downlink interference, for all set of frequencies selected by the user .

Uplink measurements are performed on all TRXs of the cells that are

included in the recording. A sample is collected approximately every 15

seconds in the selected frequency to start recording. The result of the

recording is collected by FAS and processed by FOX . Consists of three

values for each frequency for each cell , an average value , a percentage , and the number of samples .

The value in percent ( % ) describes the distribution of samples

    collected.

    Fas and fox operation

The downlink measures are based on measurements made by the

mobile . According to the GSM specifications , the mobile measure each

frequency that is declared in the BA List which is a list of frequencies for

each cell transmitted . The six strongest BCCH in the BA -list are

reported to the BTS about twice per second. The report with the 6-cell is

    called Measurement Report.

The Measurement Report of the 6 strongest cells include the following

information: signal strength and frequency (BCCH and BSIC) . The last

two are used to identify the cell that has been measured . When

programming a FAS is possible to modify the BA List with the

frequencies that are not initially included in the BA List, for that could be

    measured as a dummy .

    Fas and fox operation

For each measurement report the signal strength of the reported cells

are compared with the signal strength of the serving cell , to check for

potential interference between cells. After this comparison , this

information is compiled into a matrix which describes which signal level

between one cell and another .

The matrix is called ICDM (Inter - Cell Dependency Matrix) , and it has 3

values for each ratio of cells , a value for frequency co -channel , one for adjacent frequencies and a value for the number measurement reports when the frequency was included in the active BA List. The ICDM is

independent of the frequency plan used .

    Fas and fox operation

The ICDM is combined with the current frequency plan. For each

frequency (both configured and non-configured) in each cell that was

included in the recording, the Downlink interference is calculated based

on estimates of use. This value is called PIT (Percentage Interfered

Traffic), and shows how big is the percentage of traffic that could be

interfered with if the frequency was used in a particular cell.

    FAS can be used to:

    Frequency Planning

    Frequency Reuse

Network monitoring, to measure levels of interference in the network

The use of FOX will be specified in another document.

    3. Go to File New Recording FAS

As a recommendation, the period of recording should be at least during 3

hours where the busy hour is been included, to have a good statistic

    information.

    - Name the recording

    - Select FAS

For ICDM creation: Click in Create New ICDM and specify how ICDM will

be created. Declare the value of Relative SS Threshold C/I, Relative SS

Threshold C/A value , BA List rotation interval and number fo dummy

    frequencies for each interval.

Downlink Settings (for ICDM creation): Click in Create New ICDM and

specify how ICDM will be created. Declare the value of Relative SS

Threshold C/I, Relative SS Threshold C/A value , BA List rotation

interval and number fo dummy frequencies for each interval.

Uplink Settings: Click Create FAS Results and specify the percentage of

mesurements will be recorded, and the frequency set.

    4. Specify the time interval for recording.

Intervals may be two periods. The minimum size of the intervals is

defined by (periodIntLimit) parameter defined during installation of FAS.

This parameter by default is .15 minutes. When a recording is made FAS downlink, this function uses the BAR (active BA-list Recording) in the

    BSC.

    FAS creation

If you try to schedule a recording with a very short time (10 minutes is a

very short period of BAR) might be that the recording does not run,

because when recording starts, some commands are sent to the BSC to

make the initial configuration before the start of the recording, this setting

takes a few minutes, could have not enough time to start setting before

    recording.

    5. Select the set of cells to be recorded.

    6. Select the type of recording system (do a filter or select cells).

    7. Select the frequency to be used only when a recording is set uplink

(you must select Create FAS Result).

    8. Select Save or Save and Schedule recording.

    Icdm adjustment

When a new ICDM is created, could be select many options

from an existing ICDM or not, and the settings of both could

be used. If two are combined, the interference values are

calculate according to the number of samples taken in a cell.

The alternatives for the estimation of traffic are the following:

    1. The traffic load is calculated using data from BAR for cells

that are included in the recording. For cells that are not

considered in the recording, STS is used to calculate the

traffic load. If not available the STS will be used the average

    value of traffic.

    2. If required to make a FAS / FOX to estimate the PIT in all

cells and for all frequencies in high load conditions in all

cells, then you have to click on the checkbox "Estimate PIT

Based on Full Traffic Load ".

    REPORT FAS

The report cell is opened when the user selects a cell

    click Reports FAS Cell Report.

This can be used to analyze the level of interference for

    different frequencies defined.

The report contains two parts, one for the configured

frequencies and another for the measured frequencies. A

user can easily see if the test frequency is better than the

currently stored in the cell. By default, the list of set

frequency is stored in descending order.

If the Notes column shows PIT Inc. this indicates that the

    PIT is incomplete.
