FAROESFINLANDGREENLANDNORTHERN IRELANDABOUTEurope needs young entrepreneurs !The concept of the rye-project is to encourage young people in rural & remote areas, to explore their potential as an entrepreneur, and to do this in an informal and accessible way.Our goal has been to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in our target areas.It has been hard work to try and change the climate, and the mind set of a young person, who is already looking elsewhere for opportunities.Many young people from rural areas think they are doomed to failure, cause they lack the same opportunities than their counter part in big cities.So you need to build their confidence, not just hand over paperwork, Cause it is an attitude to live in rural areas and make a living as an entrepreneur. Secondly you need to show them that its possible, and that its been done before. They need role models they can relate to and be inspired from. The local government business agencies play a very important role in creating and helping businesses, but at this stage, and for our target group, the barriers are way too high.

What is the Rye- model and concept all about?We go out, and try to find the potential young entrepreneurs We go to the local educational institutions and arrange engaging and inspirational group work activities. We take part in local events to raise awareness.And when we find our potential entrepreneurs, we work and walk through the early stages with them. We want them to picture, what their life as an entrepreneur could be like, and even more importantly show them that their own ideas and creativity have no limits. The business ideas they create based on their own interests, are as good as any other.So shortly we have been nurturing a new generation of entrepreneurs, and supporting them in crucial phases of their business creations. And also importantly, we have worked together with local authorities and institutions, to transfer information and understanding of what needs to be changed, and how to remove structural barriers.

RESULTSRye has been a piloting program. we have been designing, developing and testing our concept for a period of 2 years. During this piloting program we have engaged over 1400 young people in more than 60 eventsWe have had 33 start-ups , 3 patents and dozens of business plans still in development.the transnational networking and contacts provided through the rye -network have already proven to be valuable for many of our participants.In Northern Ireland the RYE model is now being wholly supported by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD).The delivery of the model will be transferred to local agencies.In Finland Kajaani University of applied sciences is transferring the model to its local partners, and has also integrated it into its Curriculum as a part of its graduation and employment strategy.In Greenland Qeqqata Business Council has transferred the model to Greenland business council which will extend the model to other parts of the country.In Faroe Islands The Innovation Center for the Faroe Islands wishes to be a partner and involved in any further RYE project developments.

THEFUTURE ?FUTUREWe are now developing new actions to strengthen transnational opportunities for young people in the npa region. We are inspired by the opportunities that exist. Rural locations are no longer a barrier but an advantage to the development of business.

The tv-Series Game of Thrones is a good example. We are trying to build a similar production scenario to our region. Now we have a role model in Northern Ireland + contacts and their experiences.

7Generally in remote and rural areas people expect some new factory or mine to appear, and provide jobs for young people. Less likely they think they hold the keys to build their own future. RYE has somehow managed to change the atmospheare , at least inside Kajaani University of applied Sciences.
