Construction students from Farnborough College of Technology have taken part in a competition to be named the College’s best tradesman.

At the end of the two-day challenge students had created a variety of work including candelabras made from pipes, helicopters, chimney stacks and gable roofs.

Prizes were awarded to winning participants by Tony Cable of NICEIC. With over 50 years of experience Tony Cable is considered to be a legend in the electrical industry and has made numerous television appearances including Help! My House is

Falling Down, and Rogue Traders. “I was very pleased to assist with the judging at the competition, the standard was very high and all students worked very hard ... the lecturers must be congratulated in inspiring their students in individual and team working”.

Daniel Cane, Plumbing level 1, was pleased to be presented with a prize for producing an elaborate candlestick from metal pipe, saying “the competition was a really good idea. I enjoyed using my skills in a new way – it really made me think about the way I worked and the techniques I used”.

Bricklaying and Carpentry students from Farnborough College of Technology excelled at the southern heats of CITB SkillBuild, the country’s largest multi-trade construction competition.

Students from the Aldershot College campus completed tasks designed to test their ability to follow detailed instructions, work to tight timescales, and to produce neat and accurate work – all of which are essential requirements in the Construction industry.

This was a particularly successful day for the Carpentry trio who each came home with a medal. James Dawson and Jamie Millard gaining 1st & 2nd place in Senior Carpentry, whilst Lorenzo Sammut gained 2nd place as a new entrant.

Barry Oak, Head of School, was delighted with the outcome: “this is our greatest ever

performance at a SkillBuild competition. All five students were selected to take part in the competition having previously demonstrated excellent practical skills and application of knowledge. We are all very proud of their achievements”.

James Dawson, an Advanced Carpentry Apprentice with Sandrock Building Services was awarded 1st place in the Senior Carpentry category. He said “This was a brilliant experience for all of us. My employer and tutors have all been very supportive. I didn’t expect to win so I’m really pleased with my performance and I’m hopeful that I’ll get a chance to compete in the next stage of the competition”.

James has since been selected for the final stage - keep an eye on our facebook page to find out how he gets on!

ALDERSHOT CAMPUS

CASE STUDYLUKE ARCHER

Aldershot College specialises in construction craft training and has a strong reputation for delivering courses that prepare students for work in a variety of trades.

What I have most enjoyed about the course is the variety of things you learn, for example as well as the practical work you also learn lots of theory, including how to use different calculations, health and safety and industry regulations.

The course is structured well in that you get to grips with the basics in small projects to start with, and then you move onto bigger projects in the bays, which feature all the elements that you would find in a real bathroom. We get to fit real sinks, baths and toilets and get an idea of how the plumbing within the room works as a whole.

The College has helped me find paid work experience at the Watts Gallery, where I’m looking forward to getting real industry experience, doing things like fitting radiators. Once I’ve completed this course I am hoping to start an apprenticeship and become a fully qualified plumber.
