Serving & Caring for Others
Meet FLC’s Intern Hello! My name is Wendy Steger, and I am very excited to
be your intern beginning in July. I am currently a student at
Luther Seminary in St. Paul, and I will be interning at FLC my
final year of school. I am looking forward to meeting you!
A little bit about me… I’ve lived in the Twin Cities area most
of my life. I grew up in New Brighton, and currently live in
Eagan with my husband (Don) and three children (Ryan,
age 14; Ali, age 12; & Anna, age 9).
Ministry is a second career for me. I started out at the Univer-
sity of Michigan with a degree in biology, and then made
my way into the field of healthcare information systems.
After a stint as a stay-at-home-mom, I am now on my way
toward a Masters of Divinity degree at Luther.
In my spare time, I love to spend time with my family, walk
my dog Louie, read, and run the occasional 5K race.
I am looking forward to partnering with you in ministry and
learning a lot over this next year. Peace and joy - Wendy

Summer Worship Series:
Sabbath: Finding Rest, Renewal, &
Delight In Our Busy Lives
Even in the days of Summer we
struggle to find Sabbath.
Throughout our weekend wor-
ship services we will hear our
Lord not only invites us but com-
mands us to find space and time
to find rest and delight. This worship series is inspired
by a book by the same title by author Wayne Mul-
ler. May it be a helpful way for us to grow in know-
ing Sabbath, and experiencing the abundant life
that our Lord Jesus yearns for you to have.
The FLC congregation has always been very
good at caring for its family members whether
it is celebrating a birth or weathering the storms
of life. We always answer the call to celebrate,
help out during times of illness and death, or
provide financial support to a cause. Indeed,
we are a loving and caring family. Over the
years, FLC has had members trained in Ste-
phen’s Ministry as well as a number of people
participating as “Spiritual Caregivers.”
Congregational Care
There is a need and a desire to give that willingness to care for
our church family some further expansion and organization so
that we do not let any needs or celebrations fall through the
cracks and not get met. As FLC grows, so does the need for
structured and defined programs.
To meet this need a Congregational Care Team is being orga-
nized. Twenty-two people attended an organizational meeting
on May 28, and seventeen additional people have expressed
interest in joining in as well. The vision of this team is “to become
a community in which we extend the healing love of Christ to
one another.” When a church member has a reason to cele-
brate, we want to be there, spreading joy about God’s blessing.
When a church member encounters illness, depression, death,
or tragic circumstances, the members of our community want to
be there, offering care and concern appropriate to the
situation.
The Congregational Care Team will provide cards, phone calls,
home visits, and hospital visits to those needing such care. When
a member is ill or hospitalized the team will minister with cards,
visits, phone calls and whatever else is needed at the time.
During times of death, Congregational Care will provide support
at the time of the death but will also follow up with cards, visits,
and phone calls in the months that follow. Congregational Care
will also be intentional in visiting and sending cards to our mem-
bers who are in nursing homes or homebound.
As you can see this is an extensive outreach effort and will need
many members to see it through and make it work. Every Sun-
day in our worship bulletin, we read the list of those assisting in
worship. At the bottom it would also be fitting to read –
Ministers: Every one of us. If you feel you have gifts for or a desire
to minister to others through a visitation ministry or by sending a
card and would like to be a part of this team, please make your
wishes known by contacting Sarah Lemm at [email protected]
or by signing up on the Count Me In Form. This team will meet on
the fourth Tues. of the month at 6:30 p.m. to coordinate efforts of
immediate and ongoing congregational care. Training is
provided to equip team members to carry out this ministry. Many
communications could take place between team members by
email or phone calls to keep updated on ongoing concerns.
Prayerfully consider joining this team and help FLC grow in its
core value of “Serving & Caring For Others.” Thank you to all
who already do a marvelous job of caring for our FLC family.

A Message From the Council
Council Notes
Karissa Dennis presented a proposal to replace our current organ which will last five years maximum. The plan
included purchasing a used Wicks organ with 11 ranks from a church in Monticello. It will be a three year time
frame before the new organ would be installed. The council approved the proposal.
Roger Randall presented a plan to refinance our current mortgages. The finance committee recommends the
monies saved with the lower mortgage payments be placed in the 2014 Property budget for routine repairs and
maintenance on the building.
Mark Patsche from the Property Committee presented a bid for resealing the parking lot. Council discussed the
proposal and will have the parking lot sealed and restriped in late August/early September
Finance Committee Report highlights:
May Income – At $81,618, came in $20,320 more than budget.
The main driver: Other offerings contains the Above & Beyond matching challenge – received
$26,087 in May and $33,099 total
May Expenses - At $59,533, came in $1,435 more than budget. Some of the drivers:
Payroll & benefits – Paid out Pastor Janel’s unused vacation ($2,953) that was not in budget.
4) YTD Income – At $363,099 is $21,106 more than budget and $52,755 more than prior year.
5) YTD Expenses – At $333,412 is $5,521 under budget. Mainly driven by timing of expenses.
6) May ending cash balance $95,108 and total dedicated accounts have a cash available balance
of $112,237.
7) May an additional $4,072.75 was applied to the 2nd mortgage principal balance. YTD total
additional principal applied $44,767. The remaining balance is $76,096.
Council decided not to become a Bread for the World Covenant Church. The Committee will continue with
their current activities.
The Preschool task force sent their recommendations to not pursue a Christian based preschool in FLC at this
time. Facility, space, and staffing needs will stress our already tight budget. The fact that it was not held up in
our cottage meetings and core values points to it not being a priority in our church family programming. Council
agreed.
The FLC Council will meet Tuesday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Council
Vice President
Happy summer to our Farmington Lutheran Family. My name is Karen Brownawell and I cur-
rently serve on the Congregational Council as Vice President and liaison to the Fellowship and
Service (F&S) Ministry Team. I hope you are enjoying some camping, fishing, boating, golf,
trips to the swimming pool or lake, outside worship services, or any number of other fun sum-
mer activities. Besides enjoying the great outdoors, what makes these events so enjoyable is
spending time sharing them with family and friends. And so it is with our church family as well.
It is so gratifying and enriching to come together in fellowship and share our common bond of
being part of this vibrant Christian community.
Fellowship and Service’s goal is to plan, coordinate, and oversee the various gatherings held
each year. Basically the F&S team’s primary functions revolve around food! It doesn’t get any
better than that folks! Our activities include coordinating the ice cream treats after Saturday
services along with Sunday morning coffee and treats. Each member of the church is as-
signed to a monthly service group and your participation is greatly needed and appreciated
to make this weekly fellowship time happen.
Other highlights of F&S are putting on the annual salad luncheon (June event), preparing and
serving food for the Holy Hoot in September, and organizing the Fall Craft, Bake, and Quilt
Sale in November. All these events help build camaraderie amongst our members and
friends. So please take time to volunteer for one or more of these Fellowship and Service
events. New committee members are always welcome. Come be a part of the fun!

On July 12, 16 youth and five adults will travel to Wind River Indian Reservation in the middle of Wyoming. The Wind
River Reservation area is home to both the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes as well as people living
in communities surrounding the reservation in Fremont County and Lander. From mountain peaks, meadows and
alpine streams, the natural beauty of the land is unsurpassed.
We will be joined by other churches all challenged by one thing, Jesus’ call to us in Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man
came to find and restore the lost.” This verse is at the end of the Zacchaeus’ story; the “wee little man” who climbed
a tall Sycamore tree to see Jesus and then to have Jesus invite himself to dinner, to take a place at Zacchaeus’
table, to share not just a meal but listen to Zacchaeus’ story.
This is what Jesus calls us to do, to seek out those that are troubled. Jesus challenges us to seek them out, go to the
foot of their cross and tell them about the amazing promise God makes to all of us as descendants of Abraham.
Through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, God calls us to his table as He listens to our story and then to receive his
amazing love, forgiveness and grace because of the Son of Man seeking us out.
THANK YOU! The youth thank all who helped and supported all of our fundraisers this year! Please keep all of them in
your prayers as they answer God’s call.
Youth Mission Trip Reflection Weekend is July 27 & 28. Come and listen to the stories and see the pictures of their trip
to Wind River Reservation, Wyoming.
Youth entering 7th-12th grades this coming fall are invited to CROSS TRAINING! Are you
looking for something to do this summer, a place to hang out on a Wednesday night with
friends — join us for games, food, Bible study, bonfires, worship, and service projects. The
fun will be from 6-8 p.m. every Wednesday night starting June 19 and ending August 14.
Every week will be different activities or service projects. Once a month we’ll also have a
family night. Join us — rain or shine. * NOTE: Cross Training will not meet July 24.

If any number stands out for you in the table above, it should be the $20k+ surplus in the May receipts. This
exceptional number is due to the very successful conclusion of the five week $15,000 matching opportunity
initiated in April by some generous members of FLC. Many thanks are offered to all who donated so generously
to make this matching program a success.
An even truer measure of success will be whether or not regular giving can be sustained at a level equal to or
greater than what has been budgeted throughout the summer months. We only need to look at our core values
to be reminded that it is by our regular gifts that these values will be sustained throughout the whole year. Let’s
keep the good news coming!
Giving to the Strengthening Faith Capital Appeal slowed a bit in May, however, Business Manager, Shelly Lassahn,
was still able to make another extra payment on the principal of our second mortgage in the amount of $4,073.
The Strengthening Faith appeal remains a very important component of our “above and beyond” giving program
to steadily reduce FLC’s still significant mortgage debt.
Have questions about church finances? Please contact anyone on the Finance Committee and we will
do our best to get the answers to you.

I always look forward to this time of year as we approach VBS, seeing so many
young smiling faces filled with excitement and wonder. It is an exhilarating week
as these children learn more about our Lord while forming even stronger
relationships with their peers and mentors. It is a real privilege to help teach the
numerous fun songs with energetic actions. Our congregation and community are
blessed by this new generation. VBS is an important tradition that involves many
volunteers. Everyone’s support is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to an
amazing week! -Karissa Dennis, Director of Music Ministries

Hello brothers and sisters in Christ at Farmington Lutheran Church,
I hope your summer is going well. May you find plenty of times and places to be rested and renewed in your
relationships with God and with each other. As we continually ask God to guide our ministry I wanted to share
with you a timeline that reviews the past few months and looks ahead over the next year.
FLC Vision Timeline
November 2012 – March 2013 – Cottage Meeting Sessions were held to highlight where we are at our best as
a church, those places where we have experienced God at work in the people of FLC.
April 7, 2013 – Unanimous Endorsement of Core Values at Congregational Meeting
April 28, 2013 – Two year, specialized term call concludes for Pastor Janel Kuester
April – September: What do these core values mean for each ministry area?
Step 1: Completed by June 1
What are our current activities in each ministry area? What are the goals of those activities? How do they relate to the
core values? Are there some adjustments/tweaks to be made to align our efforts with the core values?
Step 2: Dream! Ministry Teams take time to dream and name desired outcomes.
(If money was no object, how would you live out the four core values in your ministry area?)
Develop a list of SMART goals/Desired Outcomes by September 1.
July 9 – Wendy Steger, Student Pastor (Intern) begins a one year internship
September to February – Ongoing Gap analysis that results in an overall plan for staffing and ministry initiatives.
October – Associate Pastor Call Committee to be formed
July 2014 – Internship year for Intern Pastor Wendy Steger Concludes Continue on page 10... August/September 2014 – Associate Pastor potentially begins

… Living Out FLC’s Core Values cont. from page 7.
At the heart of this journey is a people striving to grow
deeper in our relationship with our Lord and with each
other.
We are intentionally trying to live into our core values, and
to expand the opportunities for more people to use their
gifts for ministry and for us to collectively serve more
people. Again, two things need to come into place
before the calling of an associate pastor:
Clarity of the role of an associate pastor
Growing our mission spending plan to be able to pay
for an associate pastor
As we live into our core values and involve more people in
ministry we are moving closer to the reality of calling a sec-
ond pastor to strengthen our ministry. By the grace of God
and your continued partnership in ministry these dreams
will become a reality.
Thank you for your partnership in ministry,
Pastor Kevin Woestehoff

Check out the new SCRIP options on the
FLC website, under the Giving tab. You
can purchase SCRIP cards for your eve-
ryday shopping needs. “Shopping
cards” are available for the places you
shop every day: grocery stores, gas sta-
tions, department and discount stores,
and restaurants. We have a wide varie-
ty of popular cards on-hand every
week, and if you don’t see what you
want, we can probably order it for
you! A portion of each card sold will
come back to the church to help
support the ministry of FLC.
Find more information and purchase
SCRIP cards at the SCRIP table, which
will be set up on Sundays between
services. An all-inclusive list of participat-
ing stores is available. Generally cards
ordered Sunday are available for pick-
up the following week.
You can help sell cards, too! We are
looking for volunteers to help sell SCRIP
gift cards on Sunday mornings. Please
contact Mara Ceason – 651.463.8660 or
[email protected] – if you’d be will-
ing to volunteer.

FLC’s Annual Salad Luncheon
Thank you to everyone that made the Annual FLC Salad Luncheon
a huge success again this year. Many people enjoyed an amazing
lunch. Thanks for supporting FLC’s Fellowship Ministry Team. A spe-
cial thank you to Pat Orndorff for organizing this great event.
State Legislations Recently the State of Minnesota passed legislation to legal-
ize civil marriage for gay and lesbian persons.
It may have some asking, “What does this mean for Farm-
ington Lutheran Church (FLC)?”
As your Senior Pastor, I’d like to share a few reflections:
This topic of same-gender marriage did not come up in any
of this past year’s conversations in cottage meetings. From
what you have shared, I would say that this issue is not at
the center of our life together. It is not at the core of who
we are.
Our main focus as a congregation is to faithfully follow to-
gether where we discern our Lord is leading us. Our main
energy at this time is going into living deeper into the core
values of FLC.
As Lutherans, pastors are called by the local congregation.
Congregations determine their ow local policies, and call
pastors to carry out pastoral acts (baptisms, funerals, wed-
dings, confirmations, etc.) on behalf of the congregation.
The manner of how a pastor carries out those pastoral acts
is guided and shaped by you the congregation.
We do not need to rush into making some kind of a deci-
sion in regards to what this newly passed legislation means
for FLC.
As God’s people called to worship, serve, study, and pray
together there are times where life draws us into difficult
conversations where we know not everyone thinks the
same thoughts. As a congregation of 2200 people I am
fairly certain there is more than one opinion on this matter.
As Christians we are not afraid of difficult topics or conver-
sations, but we want to take every step to avoid divisions.
Painful divisions can knock a
congregation off track, and derail a church from carrying
out the ministry God calls them to.
We will provide some formal time this coming fall for study,
prayer and conversation. Until then, I also invite your infor-
mal conversations as well. From my first days with you, I
have experienced in you a readiness and desire to move
forward in ministry as a people united in Christ. That spirit of
unity will guide us forward in this conversation.
Thank you for the privilege of serving as your Senior Pastor.
God’s peace,
Pastor Kevin
