G’day everyone!. Welcome to Farmer Murray’s dairy milk farm. This is where our story takes place.

Farmer Murray, his wife Amelia and their two kids, Max and Layla, own and look after this farm.

3

On this farm, there are dairy cows that spend most of their days eating, sleeping and chewing cud.

Page 6: Farmer Murray's Milk - Enviro-Stories

4

These dairy cows on this farm get milked with machines. There are enough machines to milk 20 cows at a time. They get milked twice a day.

5

The milk is stored in silos, which come in different shapes and sizes. The silos are refrigerated to about 4°C and the milk is left in there for no more than 48 hours.

6

The milk in Farmer Murray’s silos is constantly agitated. This keeps it cold and it prevents the cream separating from the milk.

7

Jamie, the milk-tanker driver, collects milk from farms every 24-48 hours. The milk tanks have special stainless-steel bodies which are insulated to keep the milk cold while the truck is driven to the processing factory.

8

In the factory, samples of Farmer Murray’s milk are taken from the milk tankers on arrival. These samples are tested for antibiotics and temperature before the milk is taken to the processing area.

9

The samples are tested for cream, protein and other important qualities the milk needs. If Farmer Murray’s milk isn’t good enough, it will be rejected.

10

Whole milk, once it’s ready for use, is pumped into storage silos where it undergoes separation and further processing.

11

Now the milk is ready to be packaged for delivery to the stores. The milk travels through pipes to the automatic packaging machines where it fills and seals Farmer Murray’s milk into plastic jugs.

12

After packaging, the milk is stored in large, refrigerated rooms until it is ready to be delivered to stores to be sold.

13

Finally, the milk is ready for shoppers who need milk for some of their daily needs.

14

Many people use milk for different needs. Some people use milk just to make drinks such as milo, tea, coffee, milkshakes or whatever it is you might like to make.

15

Milk can also be used to make other products and deserts such as ice-cream, chocolate, butter, cream and other treats to enjoy.

16

The milk that we enjoy today all starts from dairy farms, just like Farmer Murray’s.
