Gabber March 27 - April 2, 2014 11 Farm, from front page Sweetwater Organic Community Farm announces the launch of a new day camp program for children ages 9-11. Tampa Bay area families may now begin signing up their children for weekly summer sessions, which run from June 2-August 22, 2014. Farm camp focuses on teaching campers about agricultural sustainability, wise use and reuse of natural resources, growing organic gardens from seed, and healthy living. Sweetwater’s Farm Camp utilizes both Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in earth sciences and curricula from Project WILD to create an experience that is highly educational and interactive. At its core, Sweetwater’s vision is to promote fresh, locally grown food and foster social and ecological responsibility. Sweetwater’s farm camp is the first of its kind in the state of Florida and is designed around the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (or STEM subjects). Campers will have a host of diverse topics and activities to explore that require them to use these subjects in concrete and tangible ways. A prominent feature of the program focuses specifically on the impact of agricultural systems to human health, as campers will learn about their nutritional needs and how to grow and preserve food for a healthy diet. Other activities at farm camp include: wildlife hikes, where campers learn about Florida’s indigenous and invasive species, digital microscope studies of local water sources and plant cells, upcycled art projects, games focused on environmental interconnectivity, a scavenger hunt for nutritious foods, a salsa party, and a cooking/canning lesson. Families interested in signing up for Sweetwater’s farm camp may contact our Education Program Director, Christopher Hawthorne, at (813) 887-4066 or education@ sweetwater-organic.org. ••• Polish American Society News The Polish American Society, 1343 Beach Drive SE (next to Coast Guard commissary) is open with live bands on Sundays through May 4th. The Gabs

We went to Low Tide, the newest addition to Gulfport's Art Village Courtyard. We asked

kava drinkers to tell us why they drank kava.

Sean Simpson, St. Petersburg (co-owner): "Mainly because of the environment. The environment it provides is very loving and peaceful and also very friendly. The relaxing effects of the kava help bring it all together."

•••

Dylan Budd, Gulfport: "I haven't drank alcohol in over a month. It keeps you away from alcohol and it keeps you away from drugs."

•••

Marcus Hirschbine, Gulfport: "Kava's a nice relaxant. After a couple servings of kava it makes you feel relaxed. It's a good alternative to something like an alcoholic beverage."

•••

Kevin Tighe, St. Petersburg (co-owner): "It's really sort of a release of just ending your day on the right note. There are other reasons as well. I stopped drinking and this was a way for me to still have that social interaction. "
