Communication problems are usually at the heart of frustrations and misunderstandings between horses and humans.
Every problem can be solved without force when you use love, language and leadership. This is why Parelli has become the world’s leading method for preventing and solving problems with horses. It teaches you to see things from the horse’s perspective and use strategies that make sense to the horse.
Quick fixes don’t work. This is a true fix. Parelli will teach you to solve problems naturally, the way a horseman would. To learn more about the #1 horsemanship program, call 1-800-642-3335 or visit www.parelli.com.

Top clinician, Clinton Anderson is renowned for his easy-to-understand method of horsemanship that focuses on safety. What started
as a passion for horses as a young boy in his native Australia has turned into an all-consuming desire to help others achieve a new
level of horsemanship. As a teenager, he apprenticed under Australian horsemen – Gordon McKinlay and Ian Francis, studied every
book and video he could get his hands on and even traveled to the States as a young trainer to learn from the American greats. “I’m
a firm believer that you never stop learning or adding to your skills,” Clinton shares. “Over the past 19 years, I’ve gained an incredible amount
of knowledge and experience.” The culmination of which is the Downunder Horsemanship Method, a step-by-step program that helps owners
achieve an obedient, safe and willing horse.

HorsemansHip made simple
What separates Clinton’s method from other programs is his focus on safety and achieving results quickly. “No one wants to be around a horse that constantly makes you look over your shoulder with fear,” Clinton explains. “Whether you compete and go to horse shows on the weekends or trail ride every chance you get, being around your horse should be a relaxing, good time. You should enjoy your partnership with him and he should enjoy being around you.”
Clinton’s method focuses on earning the horse’s respect through a series of groundwork and riding exercises designed to gain control of the horse’s feet. “When you can control your horse’s feet, you gain confidence, and if you have confidence in your horse and in your ability to control him, you can relax and have fun,” he emphasizes.
Clinton first started sharing his method in 1998 when he toured the States conducting clinics and tours. By 2001, he became the first clinician to start a television series on horse training for RFD-TV, and today Downunder Horsemanship is the network’s highest rated equine program. Clinton made headlines in 2003 when he won the Road to the Horse Colt Starting Challenge and then again in 2005 when he became the first ever two-time champion of the event, which involves breaking an untrained colt in just three hours.
Downunder Horsemanship is headquartered in Stephenville, Texas where Clinton continues to inspire the dreams of horsemen with instructional DVDs and written manuals that comprise an in-depth home-study course and innovative training tools. In a little over three years, his No Worries Club, a fan-based community, has grown to over 13,000 members and is gaining in popularity. A respected trainer in his own right, Clinton breeds and shows his own reining horses and consistently places at the top of the sport. Hundreds of horse owners travel to his ranch each year to attend clinics where they learn to excel their horsemanship, and he conducts standing room-only tours bringing crowds to their feet explaining the benefits of the Method and demonstrating the incredible bond that can be established between horse and human.
A Safe and Enjoyable PartnershipThe best testament of Clinton’s Method is his Signature Horses. Signature Horses are hand-selected by Clinton to complete an intense training program at his ranch and then
matched to an owner looking for a safe and trusting partner. Trained by his apprentices, Signature Horses know Clinton’s entire program from fundamentals groundwork to advanced maneuvers. “Whether you’re looking to build your confidence with a safe, dependable and exceptionally well-trained horse, or achieve an in-depth understanding of the Method that you can use to excel in any discipline with any horse, Signature Horses are an opportunity to find the horse of your dreams,” Clinton explains. These horses are responsive and well-mannered enough for beginners, including
children and older adults. Safe, respectful and attentive to riders’ needs, Signature Horses provide a fun and fulfilling learning experience, and as a rider’s confidence and horsemanship skills develop, the Signature Horse is there ready to accelerate their
learning. “They are great for riders who are looking to gain confidence in the saddle again,” Clinton says, adding that riders will never outgrow their Signature Horse because they are capable of excelling in any chosen discipline Clinton firmly believes that there are no shortcuts when it comes to getting a
Volume 40 Farm&Ranch West12
respectful, safe horse that’s a joy to ride. The only exception to that rule,
he says, is if you get a horse from him already trained. Just as kids don’t
educate themselves sitting in front of the television, horses don’t train
themselves standing around in the pasture. “Many of my customers
are highly successful professionals and don’t have the time necessary
to consistently devote to training a truly safe and enjoyable mount,”
he says. “That’s why my Signature Horses are ideal. Rather than you
spending time in the roundpen or doing groundwork with your horse
to earn his respect and trust, I do the hard work for you.”
Working professional and horsewoman, Kathy Worley knows that
firsthand. “A Signature Horse is perfect for somebody like me who
doesn’t have all the time in the world to ride,” she explains. “I didn’t
have the time to teach one of my own horses the entire Method, but
once I bought a horse that knows the Method, I was able to learn it
myself.” With two Signature Horses of her own, Kathy says that her
confidence has soared and she’s able to accomplish horsemanship
goals she never thought possible.
Ensuring Harmony
With his years of experience helping thousands of horse owners train
and improve their relationship with their horses, Clinton prides himself
on being able to help people pick out the right horse. Not only does
he have an eye for choosing quality horses, but he also has a practiced
ability to match horses with people. When it comes to matching a
potential owner up with a Signature Horse, Clinton pays close attention
to the owner’s goals and personality. All prospective owners visit the
ranch and receive an entire day of personal training from Clinton’s
apprentices with their Signature Horse.
“Clinton made sure we knew everything about the horse and he
“We knew Clinton wouldn’t let us buy a horse if he didn’t feel it was
a good match. We had a lot of faith in his judgment and there was no
pressure to buy the horse.”
Suzanne Glancy has found the same success with her Signature
Horses, “I’ve had previous experiences buying horses from people who
said they were bombproof and you could do anything with, but that
didn’t turn out to be true. Clinton’s horses are genuinely safe and are
amazing confidence builders.”
Signature Horses are worked daily and ridden on trails and in
the arena to ensure that they’re relaxed and confident no matter the
situation. “The amount of knowledge my Signature Horse has continues
to impress me,” Janet Presnell says. “He is such a safe horse. When
people come to the barn and see him, they all make comments about
how calm and easygoing he is.”
Since offering Signature Horses for sale two years ago, Clinton has
experienced an unprecedented demand for the well-trained horses.
He selects only 20 horses each year to begin the rigorous training, and
prospective owners are put on a waiting list until the horse that matches
all of their criteria is available. In fact, Clinton is so confident in his
Signature Horses that they come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
“I want to make absolutely certain new owners are happy with their
equine partners,” Clinton explains. “After all, we all got into horses
because we wanted to enjoy the experience and stay safe doing it.” v

Barney CreekRanch If a picture is worth a thousand words, the words should flow freely,
unceasingly— if one’s breath was not stolen by the sight.
Cover Ranch
Barney CreekRanch
In Paradise Valley, the world is a breathtaking canvas of natural beauty conveyed in layers: towering mountains, sloping foothills, extensive
valleys and a roaring river that shapes and gives life to it all—a scene perfectly scripted and infinitely inspiring.
Once owned by American novelist and screenwriter Thomas McGuane, III, Barney Creek Ranch was a place of inspiration, a private retreat where
he bore witness to the ever-changing American West: its storied past and its uncertain future. Today, one thing is certain. Barney Creek remains a
place where natural beauty and historic buildings still dominate the landscape, vastly untouched.
“It’s exceptional. There’s really no other way to describe it,” said Tracy Raich, owner of Raich Montana Properties, LLC and a consistent top seller
in the southwestern Montana real estate market. “You can see beauty throughout Paradise Valley, but Barney Creek really lets you live it. This is
one of the most exceptional recreational properties of this size to come on the market.”
Encompassing 661± deeded acres, Barney Creek Ranch is a recreational haven for the hunter or general outdoor enthusiast who desires more than a
view from the porch. Bordered by U.S. Forest Service land and thousands of acres of wilderness and surrounded by three mountain ranges, the ranch
is literally submerged within meadows, rolling hills, mature aspen stands, creek frontage and extensive grasslands. Diverse topography welcomes the
hunter with dense coniferous forests filled with wildlife and the outdoorsman with exclusive public lands for hiking, skiing and horseback riding.
Accessed off Barney Creek Road, just 20 minutes south of Livingston, the ranch has fencing on three sides, as well as numerous pastures and
grazing land that could handle up to 120 head of cattle. The ranch features 1,000 feet of Barney Creek frontage, and Pine Creek is used for flood-
irrigation to 40± acres of pasture and 40± acres of hay ground. Additional water is provided by two wells.
A perfect blend of contemporary architecture with rustic accents, the 2,916-square-foot, four-bedroom, two-bath main home is a true retreat, perfect
for quiet seclusion or entertaining guests. The spacious floor plan features vaulted ceilings, pathways that allow effortless movement of light and people

timbers slopes year round. The sight of
the massive beasts traversing the property
is incredible, and their calls unmistakable
as they echo off the mountains and fill the
foothills with the sounds of nature. In addition,
the sight of birds of prey, wolves, mountain lion,
moose and bear provide further evidence of a
true wildlife haven with a historical charm.
A testament to Barney Creek Ranch’s
historical roots, the forest-green barn (built in
1920) is an iconic landmark, instantly familiar
and still functional after almost a century. The
barn features a main floor with two closed
stalls with exterior paddocks and potential for

from room to room, warm wooden accents
and an exceptional charm as welcoming as it
is gorgeous. Large windows frame picturesque
views of the property and allow natural light to
fill every room. Remodeled in 1985 with new
flooring and an updated kitchen and baths, the
two-level home offers a western-facing deck and
a three-stall, 782-square-foot garage (built in
1997) with electricity.
Complementing the main home, a 192-square-
foot guest cabin will charm your guests with a
private place amidst the meadows. Featuring
a quaint front porch, a three-quarter bath and
a sleeping loft, this smaller cottage provides
all the warmth of the main home. Yet, for the
ultimate escape, a mountaintop hunter’s cabin
provides a bird’s-eye view of Paradise Valley and
the famed Yellowstone River. Complete with
a stove and bunks, the cabin is perfect for the
hunter planning for a day amidst the valley and
its plethora of wildlife.
Nurtured by the world-renowned Yellowstone
River and three world-famous spring creeks just
minutes away, the wildlife roaming Barney Creek
Ranch is as diverse and magnificent as the ranch
itself. From the depth of the river, Yellowstone
cutthroats and rainbow and brook trout rise to
dance along the surface, beckoning anglers to
enjoy fly-fishing in the crystal-clear Blue Ribbon
waters. At the ranch, elk and mule and whitetail
deer migrate through the meadows and up the

it’s ready. If you want a place to get away on the
weekend, it’s here. If you want recreation, the
hardest part is deciding what to do.”
Throughout his career, Thomas McGuane,
III feared for the death of the American West,
the passing of a great legacy to the encroaching
cities just on the horizon. He feared the loss
of the land to parking lots, mountains to
skyscrapers and, perhaps most importantly,
the dissolution of the Western spirit. At Barney
Creek Ranch, the spirit survives and awaits a
new generation to preserve its legacy.

In the middle of the Paradise Valley near Emigrant and Chico Hot Springs, Diamond B Ranch is
one of the few large ranches (3,810± deeded acres) left in the valley. The Diamond B consists of
two distinct parcels: the River Ranch which includes 1,250± acres on the banks of the Yellowstone
River and the Mountain Ranch with 2,560± acres bordering U.S. Forest Service land. Traditionally,
the Diamond B would be considered a “well balanced” ranch operation with the River Ranch
serving as the headquarters and providing a substantial hay base, and the Mountain Ranch with
its Forest Service grazing allotment providing summer pasture. The ranch runs Angus cattle,
bison and the occasional longhorn. However, with beautiful views of Emigrant Peak framing every
landscape, significant Yellowstone River frontage and riparian areas, four large ponds, flowing
spring waters, private access to wildlife-filled alpine country and close proximity to Yellowstone
Park, Bozeman and Livingston, the Diamond B has many facets that make it more valuable than
any cattle operation could imagine, let alone support. New ListiNg. $23,500,000.

Because of the abundant water on the Fraser

great for entertaining. This property may have
subdivision potential in the future. This subdivision was started by Brent Dickens in 2002 and consists of six lots. This six-lot subdivision
has been approved. Lot 4 has a four-bedroom, four-bath home (presently rented) with great views.
Lot 6 has a studio garage with plans to remodel into a residential home. The other four lots are ready
to build; there are some conditions and improvements that require completion. The tragic passing of
Brent Dickens has his estate selling off the complete project, and just waiting for that investor/builder
to build out. This is a great opportunity for a buyer in today’s market. We have all the conditions,
maps and information for a buyer to review. A visit to the property shows one the endless possibilities
for this project. One could live in the residence on Lot 4, build out the other four lots and remodel
the studio/garage. This project has unlimited potential for the investor/builder.

CClark’s Canyon Ranch rests in the very private and historical area of Wyoming’s northwest corner, along the front of the rugged and steep Beartooth
Mountains. Approximately 26 miles northwest of Cody, 40 miles from Red Lodge, Montana (a popular ski resort) and 70 miles west of Yellowstone
National Park’s northeast entrance on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, the ranch is accessed by a county-maintained gravel road via State Highway
120. The 3,200 total acres consist of 1,070 deeded, 1,500 BLM lease and 640 State of Wyoming lease acres. There are 365 irrigated and 134 sub-irrigated
acres. Historically producing alfalfa hay, the 365 irrigated acres are currently used for grazing and produce native grass. A wildlife refuge with native
range grasses, the sub-irrigated acreage provides incredible wildlife habitat. The majority of the BLM lease adjoins approximately three miles of the
Clark’s Fork River along the Beartooth Front and is part of the critical elk winter/parturition range where over 4,000 elk reside. The picturesque State
of Wyoming section lies at the canyon mouth of the Clark’s Fork River and forms the west boundary of the ranch. The Clark’s Fork of the Yellowstone
River flows through Clark’s Fork Canyon and meanders along the northern border of the ranch. John Colter, the first Englishman to visit Yellowstone,
spent the winter of 1806–07 in a cave in the Clark’s Fork Canyon after leaving the Lewis and Clark expedition. Along the Clark’s Fork River, Native
American sites and migration routes are obvious with numerous teepee rings. In fall of 1877, the Nez Pierce Indians, led by Chief Joseph, evaded
the U.S. Army. While attempting their famous escape, they passed through the immediate ranch area. Improvements are designed to complement a
horse and cattle ranch operation and provide comfortable amenities for recreational enthusiasts. The custom home has an open floor plan with high
ceilings and large windows, allowing spectacular Beartooth Mountain and Clark’s Fork Canyon views. Multiple outbuildings include a horse barn with
eight box stalls, tack room, indoor water and hay storage. The Clark Canyon Ranch is an outdoor
sportsman’s retreat with unlimited opportunities. Hunting enthusiasts will find resident herds of elk,
mule deer, whitetail deer and antelope. Moose occasionally frequent the river and creeks. Bighorn
sheep and mountain goat reside near the canyon. This area is only one of two places in Wyoming
where mountain goats are found and is considered by many to be a premier wildlife viewing location.
The Clark’s Fork River on the ranch and over 950 lakes on the adjacent Beartooth Plateau in the
national forest offer exceptional fishing for Yellowstone cutthroats and mountain white fish. The
ranch and surrounding public lands offer horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking,
ATV riding, backpacking, boating, whitewater rafting and kayaking. Trails on the Beartooth Plateau
and in Shoshone National Forest offer outdoor enthusiasts the chance to experience miles of
untamed country. Winter recreation includes snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing,
snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice fishing and ice climbing. $6,420,000.
The meandering driveway makes this ranch feel like 100 acres! A terrific and fully developed horse

IIn one of Wyoming’s premier mountain valley communities, Deer Creek Ranch consists of 1,348± deeded acres. It lies at the foot of Pennock Mountain
and is surrounded by a Wildlife Habitat Management area and state and BLM lands. This ranch has end-of-the-road privacy and incredible views of the
Snowy Range Mountains, which are part of the Medicine Bow National Forest. This area is rich in wildlife and large game herds, including elk, deer and
antelope. Two miles of Deer Creek flow through the property from its headwaters in the Snowy Range. Lazily flowing through dense aspen and willow
groves, Deer Creek meanders past ranch buildings and open meadows. Several beaver ponds lie on the west side of the property. The ranch has 6.54
CFS of water rights dating back to 1897 and currently irrigates 205 acres in native grass hay. Improvements consist of a 3,500-square-foot, two-story log
home, completely remodeled in 1996, with two separate and very charming, fully furnished log cabins, a traditional loft-style horse barn with tack room,
hay barn, workshop and tractor shed—all in
excellent condition and surrounded by mature
trees. Due to its strategic location and significant
habitat for wildlife, the ranch is protected with
a conservation easement, preserving its “open
space” value. Just eight miles to the entrance
of Saratoga’s prestigious “members only” Old
Baldy Club, this private, well-kept ranch offers
everything in a wonderful location.
