Dental%Hygienist%Visits%Fanwood%We%were%excited%to%once%again%welcome%Joanne%Roos%from%Main%Street%Pediatric%Dentistry%to%talk%to%our%Preschool%and%Elementary%students%about%the%importance%of%taking%care%of%our%teeth.%%%%

Joanne%is%a%dental%hygienist%who%loves%to%teach%children%the%proper%way%to%brush%and%about%eating%healthy%foods%to%keep%our%teeth%strong.%%

The%students%were%able%to%practice%their%brushing%techniques%on%stuffed%animals,%watch%a%funny%cartoon%and%receive%stickers%and%goodie%bags%at%the%end%of%the%program.%%%

Safety%at%Fanwood%%

Our%Safety%Team%members%meet%every%week%(sometimes%more)%and%are%tasked%with%trying%to%identify%potential%problems%and%possible%solutions%regarding%safety%here%at%Fanwood.%%We%all%understand%that%this%group%of%people%is%not%responsible%for%the%safety%of%the%students%and%staff%members,%but%they%certainly%dedicate%a%great%deal%of%their%time%focusing%on%it!%%%

%

Recently%we%had%a%presentation%by%our%Safety%Team%and%members%of%the%Greenburgh%Police%Department.%Lockdown%procedures%were%reviewed%and%the%police%officers%spoke%about%the%importance%of%everyone%taking%responsibility%for%their%own%safety%as%well%as%the%safety%of%those%around%us.%%We%will%continue%to%practice%lockdown%drills%many%times%throughout%the%year.%%%%

As%a%reminder,%listed%below%are%some%of%the%important%points%discussed%by%the%officers:%

• Students%and%staff%should%ALWAYS%wear%their%ID%

• Parents%need%to%follow%the%same%sign%in%procedures%as%other%visitors%

• During%a%lockdown,%students%and%staff%members%are%instructed%to%stay%quiet%

• All%doors%leading%to%outside%must%be%closed%at%all%times%

• Staff%members%are%instructed%to%check%the%halls%during%an%alert%and%bring%in%any%students%or%staff%members%

Visit%From%St.%Mary’s%School%for%the%Deaf%Recently%we%welcomed%a%group%from%St.%Mary’s%School%for%the%Deaf%from%Buffalo,%NY.%%St.%Mary’s%is%very%interested%in%establishing%an%auditory%oral%program%and%wanted%an%opportunity%to%learn%from%us,%observe,%ask%questions%and%gain%a%better%perspective%of%our%program%here%at%Fanwood.%%%%They%were%impressed%with%our%bilingual%approach%and%were%very%appreciative%of%our%willingness%to%share%information.%%

Earlier%this%month,%three%of%the%New%York%School%for%the%Deaf%track%and%field%athletes,%Shellane%McKitty,%Christopher%Pasquarelli,%and%Agron%Deski%among%with%their%two%coaches,%Regina%Russo%and%Mike%Kennedy%traveled%to%Faribault,%Minnesota%to%participate%in%the%2013%Berg/Seeger%Classic%National%Deaf%Track%&%Field%Tournament%hosted%by%Minnesota%State%Academy%for%the%Deaf%(MSAD).%%%

The%weather%on%the%day%of%the%meet%was%52%degrees,%wind]chill%factor%was%40%degrees,%and%partly%cloudy%with%a%very%strong%wind.%%Eight%other%deaf%schools’%elite%men’s%and%women’s%track%and%field%teams%nationwide%convened%and%competed%for%the%2013%national%team%and%individual%titles.%Fanwood’s%athletes%received%6%national%medals%with%a%count%of%3%golds,%2%silvers,%and%1%bronze.%%

Senior%Christopher%Pasquarelli%is%the%national%GOLD%medalist%in%men’s%1600<meter%run!%He%also%won%the%silver%medal%for%men’s’%800]meter%run%and%the%bronze%medal%in%men’s%3200]

meter%run.%Senior%Shellane%McKitty%grabbed%2%GOLD%medals%for%both%women’s%400<meter%dash%and%200<meter%dash!%She%also%won%the%silver%medal%for%women’s%100]meter%dash,%a%very%close%call%for%another%gold%medal.%%

Freshman%Agron%Deski%is%the%national%4th%place%in%men’s%100<meter%dash%and%5th%place%in%men’s%200<meter%dash.%Hence,%he%is%the%national%fastest%200]meter%dash%runner%in%his%grade%level%group.%He%also%competed%in%the%men’s%400]meter%dash.%

Overall%out%of%9%Deaf%schools,%Christopher%and%Agron%were%only%2%males%who%represented%Fanwood%men’s%team.%Both%earned%33%team%points%and%ranked%Fanwood’s%men’s%team%5th%place%in%the%nation!%%%%

Shellane%was%the%one%and%only%female%who%represented%Fanwood’s%women’s%team.%%She%earned%28%points%and%ranked%Fanwood’s%women’s%team%5th%place%in%the%nation,%tied%with%Michigan%School%for%the%Deaf%who%have%3%females%on%their%women’s%team.%

We%are%very%happy%and%proud%to%share%the%exciting%news%that%our%athletes%are%the%national%champions%and%now%have%national%recognition%for%their%top%performances%in%the%United%States!%

With%Shellane’s%lone%and%extraordinary%performances%that%amazed%everyone%at%the%venue%and%across%the%nation,%she%received%a%very%special%and%prestigious%award,%Ruth%T.%Seeger%Award%for%Best%Female%Track%Athlete,%at%the%awards%ceremony.%%%SHELLANE%was%chosen%as%the%2013%BEST%female%track%athlete%in%the%country!%It%is%a%huge%honor%for%her%and%Fanwood!%%What%this%means%is,%Shellane’s%and%Chris’s%names%are%on%the%list%for%selection%to%go%to%qualifying%trials%for%the%Deaflympics%National%Team%that%will%represent%the%United%States%of%America%

FANWOOD%ATHLETES%SHINE!%ESDAA%Track%and%Field%Tournament<%St.%Mary’s%School%for%the%Deaf%at%Buffalo%NY%%

New%York%School%for%the%Deaf%track%and%field%team,%missing%three%of%their%key%athletes%due%to%the%rescheduling%of%the%Berg/Seeger%National%Tournament%which%occurred%on%the%same%day,%began%the%weekend%by%leaving%the%Fanwood%campus%on%Friday,%May%12th%morning.%%Lexington%School%for%the%Deaf%track%and%field%team%drove%to%the%Fanwood%campus%that%morning,%and%the%two%schools%traveled%

together.%%Upon%arrival%at%Saint%Mary’s%School%for%the%Deaf,%the%two%teams%joined%the%other%ESDAA%

schools%in%Friday%evening’s%“Team%Social”%which%was%already%in%progress.%%%%

It%was%a%very%quiet%affair%UNTIL%the%New%York%schools%arrived%when%games%and%events%were%begun,%led%by%Fanwood’s%inventive%student%Yzumaris%Rodriguez.%%It%was%then%that%all%students%and%athletes%joined%in%many%fun%games%and%contests.%%%

It%was%an%extremely%pleasant%atmosphere%with%all%students,%regardless%of%what%school%they%belonged%to,%participating%and%totally%enjoying%themselves.%

The%following%morning,%the%teams%competed%in%their%events.%%%The%track%and%field%team%is%very%young,%with%many%participating%in%the%event%for%the%first%time.%%The%team%should%keep%improving%over%the%next%few%years%and%be%competing%for%top%honors.%%This%2013%team%was%lead%by%Holly%Marschke%who%captured%the%bronze%medal%in%the%girl’s%discus,%and%Victor%Duran%who%took%the%bronze%in%the%boy’s%3200M%long%distance%race.%

When%the%meet%was%completed,%the%New%York%School%for%the%deaf%and%Lexington%School%for%the%Deaf%were%treated%to%a%visit%to%Niagara%Falls%prior%to%their%return%home.%%It%was%a%memory%to%last%a%lifetime.%%%%On%the%bus%ride%back,%the%good%news%of%their%teammates%that%had%won%national%medals%in%the%Berg/Seeger%Tournament%received%cheers%from%all.%%

Outcomes%of%cochlear%implantation%in%deaf%children%of%deaf%parents:%comparative%study%%%S%HASSANZADEH%%Psychology#and#Education#of#Exceptional#Children#Department,#Psychology#and#Education#Faculty,#University#of#Tehran,#Iran##%Abstract%%Objective:%This%retrospective%study%compared%the%cochlear%implantation%outcomes%of%first]%and%second]generation%deaf%children.%%%Methods:%The%study%group%consisted%of%seven%deaf,%cochlear]implanted%children%with%deaf%parents.%An%equal%number%of%deaf%children%with%normal]hearing%parents%were%selected%by%matched%sampling%as%a%reference%group.%Participants%were%matched%based%on%onset%and%severity%of%deafness,%duration%of%deafness,%age%at%cochlear%implantation,%duration%of%cochlear%implantation,%gender,%and%cochlear%implant%model.%We%used%the%Persian%Auditory%Perception%Test%for%the%Hearing%Impaired,%the%Speech%Intelligibility%Rating%scale,%and%the%Sentence%Imitation%Test,%in%order%to%measure%participants’%speech%perception,%speech%production%and%language%development,%respectively.%%%Results:%Both%groups%of%children%showed%auditory%and%speech%development.%However,%the%second]generation%deaf%children%(i.e.%deaf%children%of%deaf%parents)%exceeded%the%cochlear%implantation%performance%of%the%deaf%children%with%hearing%parents.%%%Conclusion:%This%study%confirms%that%second]generation%deaf%children%exceed%deaf%children%of%hearing%parents%in%terms%of%cochlear%implantation%performance.%Encouraging%deaf%children%to%communicate%in%sign%language%from%a%very%early%age,%before%cochlear%implantation,%appears%to%improve%their%ability%to%learn%spoken%language%after%cochlear%implantation.%%%
