HACIENDA WINE CELLARS
In 1857, Count Agoston Haraszthy, a Hungarian noblemanacknowledged as the “Father of Modern CaliforniaViticulture,” collected 100,000 grape cuttings from France,Italy, Germany, and Spain, planting the vineyards whichsurrounded Hacienda and making it an historic landmark.
Occupying the land where European grape varieties were firstcommercially planted in America, Hacienda Wine Cellars wasfounded in Sonoma Valley in 1973 by Frank H. Bartholomew, former President of United Press International. StevenMacRostie joined Hacienda as winemaker in 1974. His firstwine, a 1974 Chardonnay, won a gold medal at the SonomaCounty Harvest Fair; fine Sonoma wines and the Haciendalabel have been synonymous ever since.
The Hacienda label now encompasses a “Clair de Lune”series of fine varietal wines. The term “Clair de Lune,” ormoonlight, was first used with Hacienda’s Chardonnay byFrank Bartholomew. His love of classical music, especiallyClaude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” and of the area in Sonomawhere Hacienda was located, Valley of the Moon, promptedits use as a proprietary name.
In 1992, The Franzia family purchased the rights to theHacienda label and cased goods inventory. The familymarkets and distributes the brand nationally.
