What's new in your life? What would you say if I told you one of our local boys
would someday become one of the greatest unsung heroes of the United
States and most of the industrialized countries of the world?
Let's wander back 131 years ago to May 1882 and visit the Kaiser family
home in Sprout Brook, New York, just a few miles south of Fort Plain and
Canajoharie. While visiting at a little house in the Sprout Brook village, father
Kaiser's greeting attached to a big friendly smile, while handing you the
customary cigar, would have said, "We have a big baby son born early this
morning. We named him Henry J. Kaiser."
Father Kaiser would never live long enough to learn his little baby son 60
years later, in the 1940's, would become one of America's greatest earthly
saviors or end up becoming an unsung hero.
Without his genius and effort we - of the United States - probably would have
lost the 2nd World War. Britain and Europe would absolutely have fallen under
Hitler's control.
During the early years of the II World War, German "U" boats patrolled the
Atlantic Ocean between the American continent and Europe. These U-boats, or
submarines, were able to destroy or sink nearly ever military or commercial
ocean vessel the U.S. sent to aid the war effort. The major problem we were not
able to protect these troop-armament ships due to lack of destroyer ships,
escort-type ships whose job was to surround and hold off the subs. In fact, we
did not have enough ships to support the war effort to start with.
During those early war years, huge airplanes had not come into the picture.
A ship, or hundreds of ships, was the only answer. No ships - no men - no
armaments. Hitler would have gained control of most of the European and
American continent countries.
We could not build ships fast enough. Generally speaking, it took several
months to build one ship large enough to serve in the war effort. Crossing the
Atlantic Ocean was an easy target for Hitler's submarines.
Henry J. Kaiser, by the 1940's, was already in his 60's, and had proven
himself to be a very accomplished businessman. After studying the present
ship building process he formulated a plan to build prefabricated ships and
instead of being bolted together by thousands of bolts, they developed a
welding procedure attaching large prefabricated sections together and not
bolted one piece at a time.
The name Henry Kaiser exploded on the country when one of his liberty ships
was built in 4 days as opposed to several months. I read somewhere a smaller
ship was actually prefabricated and completely built in less than three days.
The Kaiser invention,
pre-fabricated welded wartime
ships, made it possible to turn
out completed ships in weeks
rather than several months. It
has been said that the Kaiser-
built Liberty ships were one of
the main reasons for our coun-
try's and England's
success in winning World War II.
During the war years, Kaiser's shipyards built thousands of ships, and we all
know who won the war.
We introduced this short bio of Henry Kaiser as one of our local boys. In addi-
tion to shipbuilding, what else did Henry J. of Sprout Brook do? While still in his
30's and 40's, his company built roads all over the country and in Cuba, and
built the Hoover and Grand Coulee Dams. Later in life after the Second World
War he manufactured Kaiser-Frazier cars along with Jeeps, was a hospital
builder and the founder of Kaiser Aluminum and Kaiser Steel in California and
Hawaii while becoming one of the largest property owners in California and
Hawaii.
The standard
size Kaiser cars
were considered
to be the safest
cars on the road.
What point are we trying to make with this biography of Henry J. Kaiser?
Simply this - this person who was born here in our valley was able in his life to
start, own, and control huge industries in this country creating possibly
millions of jobs and if we pull together, that is all of us, we can accomplish
something truly worth while for the Palatine Corridor.
There is a saying, "It doesn't count where we start from. It only matters
where we end up." May I add, if we don't get started we will end up in the same
place. First a dream - then hope - next action.
I've heard spring is just around the corner although it might be advisable to
not pack away your long johns. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, while a
smile creates new friends.
An upstate New York crop farmer, while visiting with a representative of the
Department of Agriculture, stated that his next door farmer friend always
seemed to be luckier with crops than he was. For example, he said he receives
more rain. "That's strange," replied the government man. "How is that possible?"
he asked. "He's got more land than I do," was the reply.
Still curious of the better luck the neighbor seemed to have, the Department
of Agriculture representative asked another neighbor for some insight. The
neighbor said, "Maybe the weather doesn't agree with him."
For about 2,000 years, the Lord's Prayer has been understood, appreciated,
and recited. It contains 56 words; Lincoln's Gettysburg address was 260
words, taught to fifth graders and understood. The Declaration of
Independence, with 3,000 words is loved and appre-

The U.S. Department ofAgriculture is issuing rec-ommendations to helpminimize the potential forfoodborne illnesses when
winter snow storms leavecommunities withoutpower for extended peri-ods.
Steps to follow to pre-
pare for a possible weath-er emergency:
• Keep an appliancethermometer in the re-frigerator and freezer. An
appliance thermometerwill indicate the tempera-ture inside the refrigera-tor and freezer in case ofa power outage and helpdetermine the safety ofthe food.
• Make sure the freezeris at 0° F or below and therefrigerator is at 40° F orbelow.
• Freeze containers ofwater for ice to help keepfood cold in the freezer, refrigerator or coolers af-ter the power is out.
• Freeze refrigerateditems such as leftovers, milk and fresh meat andpoultry that you may notneed immediately — thishelps keep them at a safetemperature longer.
• Plan ahead and knowwhere dry ice and blockice can be purchased.
• Have coolers on handto keep refrigerator foodcold if the power will beout for more than 4hours. Purchase or makeice cubes and store in thefreezer for use in the re-frigerator or in a cooler.
Freeze gel packs ahead oftime for use in coolers.
• Group food togetherin the freezer — thishelps the food stay coldlonger.
• Store food on shelvesthat will be safely out ofthe way of contaminatedwater in case of flooding.
Steps to follow after theweather emergency:
• Keep the refrigeratorand freezer doors closedas much as possible tomaintain the cold tem-perature.
• The refrigerator willkeep food safely cold forabout 4 hours if it is un-opened. A full freezer willhold the temperature forapproximately 48 hours(24 hours if it is half full)and the door remainsclosed.
• Discard refrigeratedperishable food such asmeat, poultry, fish, softcheeses, milk, eggs, left-overs and deli items after4 hours without power.
• Food may be safely re-frozen if it still contains
ice crystals or is at 40° For below when checkedwith a food thermometer.
• Never taste a food todetermine its safety!
• Obtain dry or blockice to keep your refrigera-tor and freezer as cold aspossible if the power isgoing to be out for a pro-longed period of time.Fifty pounds of dry iceshould hold an 18-cubic-foot full freezer for 2 days.
• If the power has beenout for several days, check the temperature ofthe freezer with an appli-ance thermometer. If theappliance thermometerreads 40° F or below, thefood is safe to refreeze.
• If a thermometer hasnot been kept in thefreezer, check each pack-age of food to determineits safety. If the food stillcontains ice crystals, thefood is safe.
• When in Doubt, throwit Out!

(BPT) — You may be dreaming about escaping on a vacation, but the sky-high costs of flights and cruises canquickly turn into a nightmare. If you’re looking to take a break without breaking the bank, a good, old-fash-ioned road trip could be the way to escape. Aside from packing snacks and preparing the perfect playlist, thereare a few things you should consider before venturing out on the open road. A few updates and precautionscan help you avoid the wear and potential safety hazards a long trip can have on your vehicle.
Trip-worthy tiresGood tires are an integral aspect of vehicle safety, and it is extremely important to check your tires before
heading on an extended road trip. According to the Car Care Council, thin tire treads create hazardous drivingconditions, particularly on wet roadways. Thin or worn treads can cause tires to hydroplane and potentiallylead to loss of control of the vehicle. To ensure tires wear evenly and avoid dangerous situations, it is common-ly recommended to have tires rotated every 7,000 miles. This simple routine not only makes for a more depend-able vehicle, but also saves money by extending the life of your tires. Replacing worn tires before a trip is alsoa good idea to ensure you will have no problems while far from home — plus, you may even see better gasmileage.
Brake checkChecking your brakes is an extremely important aspect of routine vehicle maintenance, and you should be
sure your brakes are in prime condition before a long journey. New brake pads and fluid may not be the mostappealing travel expense, but will certainly save you the hassle and cost failed brakes can incur.
Routine maintenanceWhether your trip is 100 miles or 1,000, checking your vehicle mechanics is important before heading out on
the open road. This includes checking and changing your oil, coolant, brake and transmission fluids as need-ed. In addition to its inner workings, make sure all outside components of your vehicle are in top shape. En-sure headlights and blinkers work properly, inspect windshield wipers and review mirrors, and check windowsfor any cracks before setting out.
Take advantage of the preventative tips above and you will have your vehicle ready to hit the open road withno hiccups just in time for vacation season.
