Family Business and Mittelstand as Drivers for Innovation and Entrepreneurship – Current Perspectives and Opportunities for Future Transatlantic Collaboration
It is commonly known that family businesses and Mittelstand firms are
the backbone of both the German and U.S.-economy. On both sides of the
Atlantic, no other type of organization can claim to produce more,
contribute more to the GDP, and provide more jobs than family businesses.
Contrary to common belief, family businesses are no thing of the past.
Quite on the opposite, they are highly innovative – both product and
process-wise – often occupying global technology leader positions in
their respective industries.
Indeed, research consistently shows that family businesses innovate at a
much faster pace and register significantly more patents than their non-
family counterparts. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of “Hidden Champion”
firms – little known companies that occupy global market shares of greater
than 70% in their respective markets – are family-owned. Names that come
to mind include Webasto, Stihl, or Brita, to mention but a few.
What can these companies teach us about innovation and entrepreneurship;
especially in times where the corporate managerial model gets increasingly
scrutinized for its inefficiencies and lack of accountability? The purpose of
the 7th AmCham Germany Business Day is to bring together international
thought leaders from industry, academia and public policy and to discuss the
advantagesbut also the challenges of family businesses and Mittelstand firms
in the global race for innovation and technology growth.
Through thematic discussions and interactive keynote presentations,
attendees will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the secrets
of global technology leaders, hear the latest cutting-edge research findings,
and network with representatives from various key industries, including
mobility & transport, production & services, as well as healthcare and
environment. The event takes place in Atlanta, Georgia – home to many
global players and epicenter of the economic growth in the Southeast
United States.
