-Identify the different types of families

-Identify the 2 functions of a family

-Know which type family they belong to

• State Standards:

Standard 4- Students analyze the influence of culture, media, technology and other factors on health.

Standard 7- Students demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health.

Functions of a Family

• Primary support system to meet your basic needs.

• Help prepare you to live independently in the world.

The Nuclear Family

• Consists of parents and one or more children sharing a household.

• Parents are both the biological parents of child/children.

The Single-Parent Family

• Only one parent lives with the child or children.

• Most often the parent is the mother.

• Causes: Divorce

Had child out of wedlock.

Husband or wife is deceased.

The Extended Family

• Consists of one or more relatives in addition to the nuclear or single-parent family.

• Examples: Grandparents, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, Niece, or Nephew.

The Blended Family

• Type of nuclear family in which one or both people have been married before.

• Each may have a child/children from a previous marriage.

• Examples: Stepparents, stepbrothers, stepsisters, half-brothers, half-sisters.

The Adoptive Family

• The children are not related by birth to the parents.

• Through legal procedure, parents adopt child and care for them as if they were their children by birth.

• Can be a nuclear, single-parent,

or blended family.

The Foster Family

• One or more of the children are not the birth children of parent/parents.

• Government agencies arrange for child to stay with family for an extended period of time.

• Can be nuclear, single-parent, or blended.

The Other Family

• Married couples with no children.

• Homosexual Couple

• People who band together and take care for each other.

• Foreign-Exchange student, or a Group Home.
