We need to take care of our mentalhealth just like we do our
physical health. All of us can benefit from learning
stressmanagement techniques and coping skills. Three things you can
do today:1. Begin to focus on the good, even when life is hard.
Remind yourself what you’ve learned through hard times and
disappointment. Look inward at how you’ve grown. Stop negative
self-talk.2. Write down or keep in mind anything that makes you
smile.3. Reach out to a friend. Enjoy time together and really
listen to one another.

if you walk in a nature setting like Forest Park. Research has
shown that walking in a nature setting can help you cope more at
your job, sleep better at night, and treat depression. • Walking
can help prevent and manage medical conditions. Studies have shown
that a brisk walk can decrease your risk for heart disease,

“ere’s so much trauma around. How are we supposed to get
through it all?”
“We build resiliency. We build itwithin us by taking the time to
takecare of ourselves. We build it in others by connecting with and
supporting them.”
is conversation happens daily all around us. e people in
ourcommunity are hurting and healing from wounds that were
createddecades, centuries, ago that are scratched open every time
the next headline reads that this personwas shot, that person
wasmurdered, anotherterrorist act wascommitted. When the videos
ofthese crimes streamacross our TVs andphones, it feels likepouring
alcohol on thosewounds. e images of friends carrying their injured
loved ones from a night club in the early morning. e name and face
of a killer played over and over again. e video of another black
man killed before our eyes. Shootings at protests meant to call for
an end to violence. Headlines that quote the number of murders in
our city – reducing whole lives to simplenumbers. Alcohol on the
wounds.
What we have to remember is thatwe also put alcohol on wounds
toclean them out – to make thembetter able to heal. It hurts
beyondwhat we think we can handle. We are supposed to be able to
heal faster afterward, be clean of infection, andbe free of
disease.
Right now, we are all feeling the sting of the alcohol in the
open wounds. at sting can make us feel lost, hopeless, and might
even makeus feel that the only way to lessenour own pain is to
spread it by hurting others. Constantly encountering the stories of
violence and trauma in our community can make us feel angry, lost,
or hopeless. But what ourcommunity needs – what we need if we have
any chance of becoming alive and well – is for us to nd a way to
use the pain to become stronger to heal faster. We are survivors
and advocates and charged with the mission to heal. When we are
feeling angry or hopeless, there are things we can do. We can take
time to care for ourselves. We can call on our friends and family
members. We can even reach out for professional help when we need
it. When we are able to see past the sting of our pain, we can
realize that in these moments, we are able to come together and
connect in new ways.
We know that it’s hard to see ourstrength through the pain, but
it iswhat we must do. Our communityneeds us to. When we are able
toconnect with each other, care forourselves, and nd the strength
inthe stinging of our pain, we canchange our community for
thebetter. It’s easier to see our strengthwhen we are together.
