CONSTRU

CTIONThe construction and dem

olition phases of a turbine’s life are the most challenging for those

working w

ithin it, as in many cases the installed fall protection system

s are not fully available. Rapid assem

bly methods and ever-larger crane capacities allow

turbine construction to proceed w

ith increasing efficiency, but workers rem

ain exposed to fall hazards, both on the turbine itself and w

hen accessing components at ground level.

Our ranges of PPE and anchor system

s ensure the best possible protection in all these situations.

PROTECTION AT ALL LEVELS

Many accidents happen near ground level, w

hen components are being prepared

for lifting or unloading from vehicles. O

ur ranges of PPE and pre-fitted anchor system

s deliver protection even in these low-clearance situations.

RESCUE &

EVACUATIONW

ind turbines are multi-hazard environm

and while accidents and em

to safely and efficiently evacuate from

the tower or nacelle, and to perform

a rescue of a colleague who

may be incapacitated or suspended after a fall.

Miller’s range of purpose-designed rescue equipm

COMPREHEN

SIVE FALL PROTECTION

ANCHOR

The selection of correct anchor points is vital, as not only must they be of suitable strength and

designed for loads in the applied directions, but they must be located w

here they can protect the user from

injury, minim

ize fall distances, and yet permit efficient and free m

ovement. The M

iller product range has a com

plete portfolio of permanent and tem

porary devices, from eyebolts for single fixing,

slings and beam clam

ps, to horizontal wire and rail system

s for protecting users on nacelle rooftops.

BODY WEAR

Choosing a harness can be the most im

portant aspect to the user, as the combination of features,

style and fit are essential to reduce stress and maxim

ise comfort w

hen climbing and w

orking in the restricted environm

ents of wind turbines. M

iller provides a range of dedicated wind energy

harnesses for the onshore and offshore markets that incorporate features specific to these dem

anding w

orkplaces, as well as rope access, confined space and basic fall arrest m

odels.

plete fall protection system is based on five essential com

NECTION

AND DECELERATION

DEVICEThere are m

any choices for the connection from your harness to the anchor point, but the selection

must be m

ade with care, to ensure the user is protected at all tim

es and retains freedom to m

ove.

The law requires that w

ork restraint systems should be used in preference, and that fall arrest

systems should m

inimise both the consequences and distance of any fall. W

hen correctly-positioned anchor system

s are combined w

ith the most appropriate connection device, w

orkers can be fully-protected w

ithout impeding their access to the turbine, or creating hazards from

entanglement.

Fall arrest systems m

ust incorporate an energy-limiting deceleration device, to ensure the peak force

devices do not include this feature, and so must never be used in a fall arrest m

ode.

EVACUATION DEVICE

A system

to allow an injured or entrapped w

orker to safely escape from height, and a vital legal

requirement for all w

ind turbines to provide a means of escape in the event of a fire. Typically an

evacuation/rescue kit is located in every turbine nacelle, and should be selected to match the tow

er height so that m

ultiple users can descend in rapid succession.

Fixed-rate descenders such as the Miller SafEscape™

ELITE allow the user

to descend hands-free at a controlled speed, and are the standard type of device for w

ind turbines across the world.

When fitted w

ith a lifting hub, these devices can be used for rescue of a colleague from

suspension or extraction from the hub. Typically the

rescue version will be stored in the w

ind farm substation or carried by the

technician, in the form of a self-contained kit containing the device, anchor

slings, brackets, pulleys, connectors and remote-reach equipm

ent.

Evacuation and rescue equipment is not

classified as PPE under European law, and

is for emergency use only. W

hen suitably packaged in a protective case, the system

can rem

ill be ready to deploy whenever needed.

By fitting approved EN

EDGE TESTED PRODUCTS

Many falls w

ill occur over an edge, placing extreme stresses on

the material of the lanyard and potentially leading to failure.

The current EN standards (EN

354 and EN355) do not allow

for this type of incident, so if an edge fall is possible in your w

orkplace it is essential that you select a device with

specific edge test approval from the m

anufacturer.

Miller provides a range of these products, show

n by this yellow sym

bol.

CONN

ECTION DEVICES

FALL ARREST LANYARDS

The most com

mon connection betw

een a user’s harness and the anchorage point will be a fall

arrest lanyard. These are available in a wide range of designs, from

rope and webbing based

products to stretchable Manyards and self-retracting m

odels; however they all serve to safely

limit the peak force experienced by a falling w

orker to below 6kN

(600kgf), by means of an energy

absorber. Fall arrest lanyards must be replaced if the absorber is activated, even partially.

On w

ind turbines, lanyards with large double-action scaffold hooks are m

ost popular, as they can connect to structural anchorages and around ladder stiles. A

twin-tail product is used to allow

the worker to rem

ain 100%

attached as they move from

point to point: when using tw

o single-tail lanyards they must never be

anchored in a way that w

ould share the energy of the fall simultaneously betw

een them.

FALL FACTORSDuring a fall, a person’s m

ass generates energy in relation to the distance travelled. The ratio of the total distance fallen to the length of the connection is called the fall factor, and should m

e m

inimized as m

uch as possible by selecting the correct lanyard and highest anchorage point:

Factor zero Factor one Factor two

FEATURES

HOW IT W

ORKSThe rope passes around a grooved pulley, linked to a high-speed shaft. Centrifugal brakes on this shaft are forced apart as they spin, slow

ing the descent automatically and giving a fixed

and safe maxim

um speed independent of the applied load.

This is faster than conventional abseil equipment, and ensures

the most efficient evacuation of m

ultiple workers from

modern

multi-m

egawatt turbines, both onshore and offshore.

To control speed and lock off the descent, the rope can be passed over a friction pigtail and placed betw

een locking cams.
