Theseclasseswillcovercurrentdigitaltechnologiesandexploreavarietyofwaysdigitaltoolscanbeusedtocreateartwork.Anintroductiontounder-standingdigitaltoolsandelectronicmediafromanartist’sperspective,thecourseisdesignedforanyonewithoutcomputerartsexperience.Studentswill exploredigital softwareandhardware tools, digital artists, and con-ceptualthinkingtodeveloptheirskillsandcreateprojectwork.Thetwo-
dimensionaldigitalimagingprogramsAdobeIllustratorandAdobePhoto-shopwillbeused,aswellassomethird-partysoftwareoptions.Theclasswillalsousethe Internet toexploreways inwhichcomputers influence,contributeto,andassistintheprocessesofmakingart.
Thisclassprovidesstudentswithanunderstandingofoilpainting.Workingfromstill-lifes, students learnhowtopaintbymixingcolors,understandvaluesandcolor,underpaint,andorganizepaintingsimply.Studentsalsolearnhowtopaintmorequicklyandefficiently.Theclassworks inatra-ditionalapproach,teachingstudentstobemoreeconomicalandspiritedwhencapturingthepainting.Alistofrecommendedsuppliesisavailableatinfo@fallschurcharts.org.
Inthisworkshop,studentswilllearntofocusonlargeshapestoachievealikeness,capturingthefaceandpersonalitywithouttheuseofdrawing.Distanced from the conceptofeye,ear,nose, etc., studentswillmoveprogressivelyfromthebigshapesthroughoutthepaintingtosmallerde-tailsuntilthepaintingiscompleted.Thelimitedpalettewillbeused,andthepainterlyresultofthislooseapproachwillbringnewinsightandre-sultsforstudents.

Byusingdifferentshadesofpaint,studentswillcaptureshapeswithouttheuseofdrawing.Insteadtheywillfocusonpaintinginbigshapestogettheessenceandproportionsof theobjects. In conjunctionwithwipingout,shapeswillgetprogressivelysmalleruntilthepaintingsarecomplete.The
Theclasswillfocusonskillsimportanttolandscapecomposition,includ-ingdeterminingfocalpointsofascene,aswellascolorandtechniquesused in depicting earth and sky. Students are expected to have somedrawingandpaintingexperience.
Studentswill learntousetoolsandtechniquesneededtoachievetex-tures, lines,andvarious results inbothwoodand linoleum.The toolsforthisclass,linoleum,andwoodwillbeprovidedatthefirstclassforpurchaseorrentduringtheclassperiod.Selectedpapersandprintingmethodswill be demonstrated and reveal variations of effect for stu-dents during the early classes. Transfer as well as artistic expressionwithoutdrawing,andproperuseoftoolsandmaterialswillbecovered.
Learn to capture the transparent quality ofwatercolor in the paintingof landscapesandstill life.Workingwithalimitedpaletteandcarefullyplanning strokesand tonality, studentswillmaster theeconomicaluseofbrushandlinetoproducetheneededeffectwithoutthefearofover-workingthepaintingandwilllearnhowtoachievecrispclearcolorandcreateatmosphericeffects.
ARTSHAREArtShareisaFallsChurchArtsBoardinitiativetoidentifyotherfacilitiesandartsprogrammingintheFallsChurchareatoincreaseopportunitiesfor FCAartists. These classes are conducted in cooperationwithotherartsorganizations.
Participantswilllearnfirst-handhowtoproperlycoat,expose,printfrom,and clean a silkscreen. Differences in inks, printing substrates, screenmesh,andfilmworkwillallbediscussed,andvariousmulti-colorregistra-tiontechniqueswillbecovered.
Instructor:JunLeeisaprintmakerwhoworksinreliefprintmakingandscreenprinting. She receivedherMFA in PrintMedia from theCran-brookAcademyofArtinMichigan.ShereceivedherBFAinIllustrationfromtheMinneapolisCollegeofArtandDesignwhereshealsoengagedinaPostBaccalaureateinPrintmaking.Sheexhibitsherworknationallyandinternationally,andthemostrecentshowwasasoloshowinKorea,inJune2014.Herstylesincludeprintmaking,drawing,andmixedmediainwhichshedepictsdifferentkindsofanimalsbroughtforthfromchild-hoodmemories.
FallsChurchArts (FCA)doesnotoffermake-upclassesor tuitionreim-bursement for student absenteeism. FCA does not prorate tuition forclassesthatthestudentcannotattend.FCAreservestherighttopostponeclassesduetocircumstancesbeyondFCAcontrol,suchassevereweather,staffillness,orotheremergencies.Instructorswillprovidemake-upclass-esforclassescancelledinthesecases.
CLASS POLICYAdmissionwillnotbedeniedanyoneonthebasisofrace,sex,orethnic-ity.FCAreservestheoptiontorefuseparticipationinaclasstoanyonewhoisdeemeddisruptivetothelearningprocessofthegroupasawhole.

NICKGATZNickGatz is an experienced professional graphic designer and production artistwith 15 years experience inprint andwebdesign.Nick graduated fromGeorgeMasonUniversitywithaBA in artwitha concentration in graphicdesign.He isskilledincreatingandimplementinginstallations,artwork,advertisingcampaigns,websites,andgallerywork.Nickhasanextensiveknowledgeofdigital,offset,andwebstandardsandtrends.Heisconstantlylookingtocreateandbringuniqueandinnovativeideastolifethroughvariousmediums.Nickisexpertindigitalartpro-gramssuchasAdobe’sPhotoshop,Illustrator,andInDesign,amongmanyothers.
In2005hestudiedatStudioIncamminatiforayearwithrenownedartistNelsonShanks.SethalsotookclassesundermasterfigureandportraitpainterRobertLib-erace. Seth infuseshis teachingwith the strongest elementsof all his teachers,alongwithhispersonalapproachestowhathefeelsisacomprehensivetechniqueforbothbeginnersandamateurs.

RICHARDLEVINERichardLevinehasbeenapainterandphotographerformorethan30yearsinthegraphicarts,workingforprominentdesignfirmsandcorporateclients.HestudiedoilpaintingforfouryearswithAlanTurnerandAndrewLattimore.Extensive travel throughout theUnited States, Europe, andAsiahas formedthefoundationforhisart.“I’minterestedinexploringtheharmoniouseffectsof light,texture,shapeandcolorandpresentingthesequalities inwaysthatevokememoryandspirit”.Forthepastseveralyears,hehasconcentratedonpastel.“Fromcolorstudies,sketches,andphotosmadeinthefield,Iproduceafinishedworkonheavysandedpastelpaper.Pastelisawonderfulmediumforcapturingthecoloroflightandair;whenholdingastickofpurepigmentinone’shand,ideasandemotionsseemtoflowmoreeasilyandintuitivelyfromthebraintothehandtothepaper.”
