WMVERORrH THE YEAR 323

Nizar Bloodbound walked over to the finely carved, stone

screens that overlooked the courtyard to his palace, His gaze

passed through the latticework of stone but he did. not see the

gardens, the walkways or the astronomical instruments of the

Burning Star, Al l he ,saw was destruction and ruin. The noble

city of Kharabad lying in ruins, consumed by the fires of

revolution. The Blackblood Empire destroyed from within by

those who comprehend only the tiniest part of what it means

to rule. The Ogre Emperors hands tightened intofists behind

his back. What the Goblins did not know, he would teachthem. He would give them a lesson inwhat it is to be Emperor

of the Blackbloods, Finally he turned back to his Grand Vizier

Bukhir.

"Why now Bukh:i:r?"

"Because we are vulnerable my Lord.' Replied Bukhir

without hesitation,

"How so Bukhir?" And the Emperor's voice held a

dangerous edge that Buk:hir knew to be wary of

"Because the Empire of the Blackbloods is the largest in the

world my lord, and we do battle on every front. From the

Wildlands of the north, to the scorching desert of the Land of

Two Rivers 'Ne push back the other races and hold our borders

against the Devout and the thrice-cursed Stygian. But with 50

many threats to our domain the army here at Kharabad is

diminished. The Goblins have. chosen their time with their

usual cunning, for it would take months to recall an army

capable of defeating the forces massing against us."

'"Soyou are convinced that the Swamp Goblins will emerge

from the Fallen Land, something they have not done in over a

thou and years?"

"Yes my Lord., I am convinced. The High Goblin at the

Tree of Life has managed. to unite the tribes like no other

before him. And they have.allied themselves with the Jade

House of the Elves, which sits on the Rim of the

World. Together with the Goblin Lords of

Terakan they have more than enough force to overwhelm us

in our current state of defense. "

"The Jade HO\l5e of the Elves." Sneered Nizar; "A den of

stupefied sybarites, made weak by their dependence on the

narcotics they extort from our people, "

"Our people?" Inquired Bukhir with a.raised brow. "The

Goblins of the Fallen Land have never been part of the Empire

my Lord. They grant us access and tribute because of ancient

ties, nothing more. •

"They are Blackbloods are they not Bukhir?" SaidNizar as

he fixed his adviser with a cold stare.

"Indeed so my Lord." Answered Bukhir nervously. "Butthey hear the Song of the Pallen Land and not the authority of

the Blood Throne. And as for the Elves of the Jade House,

they are made strong by their consumption of the Yellow

Lotus. We should not underestimate them my Lord."

'Curse that poisoned weed!" Growled N~r. "Does

everything in the Fallen Land revolve around the YellowLotus?"

"Yesmy Lord, it does.." Replied Bukhir simply.

Ni~r grew calmer and.even smiled darkly upon his Grand

Vi;:ier.

"Q,Jite so Bukhir, quite SQ, It is your opinion then that

this uprising posses a real threat to our position?"

•As we stand at this moment in time ...Yesmy Lord."

Nizar nodded and seated himself on the Blood.Throne."How long before the Goblin delegati on reaches

Kharnbad.?"

"Three weeks my Lord, four at the most."

"And what shall be their demands?"

"The Goblins of Terakan demand a separate and

independent Goblin Empire but secretly they lust after theBlood Throne. •

"Hah!" Nizar barked out a harsh laugh.

"The Swamp Goblins will demand complete severance and

an end to the excursions from the Alchemists of the Burning

Star into their territory. They also demand the return

of the Sarukh'ti Nishtar."

Page 5: Fallen Land

•Ah, the Sarukh'ti Nishtar," smiled Nizar;

"the Spirit of the Fallen Land, one of our most

treasured possessions." He was 'pensive for a

moment. RAnd the Elves," he continued, "what

de they seek in all this?"

"They seek our downfall as ever my Lord.

In bringing us down they would elevate their

position beside the ether Elven Houses.

They would also secure their allegiance

with the Swamp Goblins, fer they

alone knew the secret of growing the

YellowLotus.""Hmm! We live in challenging

Bukhir."

•As ever my lord.'

"And hew long beforewe could muster an

army large enough to crush this rebellion?"

"Several months my Lord. But the

delegation will be here within a matter of weeksand they will expect an. answer. .,

'We shall give them an answer Bukhir "

And the Emperor's eyes burned with anger. He

raised his voice, "Enter!" he commanded.

The doors to the Throne room swung open

and a servant entered carrying a steel-boundchest. An armed guard surrounded him as he

came forward and set the chest down before the

throne. Bukhir looked at the chest knowing

what it held and wondering what was an the

Emperor's mind, he was not accustomed to

being kept in the dark One of the guards knelt

before the Emperor and presented to . him an

ornate key. N~ glanced at Bukhir who. took

the key from the guard's hand.

"Leave us!" Commanded N~ and the

guards filed out, "Open the chest Bukhir."

Bukhir paused only a moment

before setting the key to the lock and opening the chest. What

lay within took his breath away. A giant emerald that shone

with an inner light. Bukhir l ifted. out the Sarukh'ti Nishtar on

its velvet cushion and set it on a table beside the Blood Throne

then turned to his Emperor for an explanation.

"Magnificent, no?"'Asked Nizar

'"Indeed so my lord.·

The emerald was the size of a child's head, and cut in the.

shape of one of the giant gourds inwhich the. Swamp Goblins

make their homes. To the Swamp Goblins it had the. significance

of a holy relic and they were bent on regaining possession of it.

"Tell me Bukhir, would you give up this bauble to save our

Empire?"

"Yes my Lord, I have no use for such trinkets."

Nizar smiled at his advisor.

"Neither do I Bukhir and I too would surrender it to save

the Empire, if I had to, It seems we need, to buy ourselves

some time if we are to maintain our position and, this crush

this uprising wouldn't you say?"

Bukhir's mind was racing as he struggled, to fathom the

mind of his master he began to see the emerald as a powerful

piece to play 1n the game that was afoot.

"Indeed 50, my Lord."

"Do you think this stone, this Spirit of the Fallen Land

could buy us the time we need?"

Things were becoming dear to Bukhir.

"The Tree of Life lies deep in the interior of the Fallen. land

my lord ..It would take anemissary many weeks to make such

a journey and deliver the Sarukh'ti Nishtar into the hands of

the High Goblin.·

"My thoughts exactly Bukhir. And who might we send on

such a perilous journey; who has the trust of the Goblins of

Terakan and the diplomatic skills to gain safe passage. through

the perilous jungles of the Fallen Land?"

"I believe your loyal Satrap Tarimek Aziz would be ideal for

such a task my Lord though many doubt his meager appetite

for violence, seeing it as . < 1 1 sign of weakness ..".

Nizar laughed softly. .

"Azi~ once disemboweled a Troll for a minor display of

disrespect. He nailed the insubordinate's hand to his dining

table and finished his supper while the Troll's innards soiled

the tiles of his palace. Did you kn w 1 raised him from the

ranks of the Deathseekers."

Bukhir raised an eyebrow once more. It seemed this day

was just full of surprises.

"Dnot doubt the steel of Tarimek A z i z . Bukhir. He is an

Ogre and a Blackblood, he will serve the Blood Throne one

final time an.d he wiU serve us well." N ie ar's g alle was focused

on some distant point. "Recall him immediately Bukhir. We

have no time to spare."

"At once my Lord." Said. Bukhir as he backed out of the

throne room. When the doors were closed he smiled. His

Lord and master would not surrender a grain of rice to save hisEmpire if it meant the. slightest loss of face before those who

sought to coerce him by force. He almost pitied the Goblins of

Terakan. The Swamp Goblins were a different story, for the

jungles of the Fallen land was their domain and it would be a

shame to lose Tarimek Aziz to its perilous beauty. A small

sacrifiee for the good of the Empire but a shame

nonetheless ... if it could somehow be avoided.

a summons to Kharabad and it bore the seal of the Blood

and checked again to see that it was addressed to him:

race, hundreds of tribes fighting each other to expand the

boundaries of their realms. The strongest tribes battle for

possession of the vast trees known as Gourd Cities. These

living cities are tended by the Swamp Goblins and in turn

provide them with everything they need, food, shelter and.the

ubiquitC1usYellow Lotus, which forms the basis of their lore

and permeates every aspect of their lives..The Swamp Goblin's

yellow eyes are testimony to the essence of the Yellow Lotus

that flows in. their veins. The battles for control of the Gourd

cities are vicious and quick but rumor has it that the trees

themselves are. never harmed and once a tribe is defeated they

quickly flee the area leaving the victors to the stewardship ofthe Gourd City.

Stranger yet is the custom that governs the death of the

most senior Shaman in Swamp Goblin society. This Elder

Shaman is known as the High Goblin and given the honor of

tending the oldest and mightiest of the Gourd Cities known as

the Tree of Life. Such a . Shaman can come from any tribe an.d.

will remain in place even if another tribe was to attack and

take control of the Tree of Life. And further to this, no matter

the state of affairs in the Fallen Land, all social activity, from

the gathering of food to the waging of war, is suspended upon

the death of the High Goblin. Fasting and abstinence continue

for as long as seven days until a new High Goblin emerges

from the Spirit World. How news of the High Goblin's deathtravels between the Gourd Cities remains a mystery but the

transferal is almost instantaneous.

The culture of the Swamp Goblins is unfathomable but

their adherence to their beliefs is beyond question, "'

The message was simply signed:

"In the spirit of providence, from them that see order in

the chaos."

Tarimek kuhad no idea as to the significance of this mes-sage but he tucked it in his robes as he strode towards the

waiting gondola slung beneath the great balloon. The lines sup-

porting the gondola were rimmed in frost and the silk screens

were stiff with ice, kiz had grown. accustomed to the bone

chilling cold of the northern province but they would be trav-

elling high over the Frozen Sea..After a few days in this flimsy

'ship of the air' he would surely welcome the arid heat of

Kharabad, despite the trepidation that filled his mind. What he felt was n t fear but a deep apprehension. To be

recalled with such urgency meant that things were not going

well with the uprising in the Fallen Land. He had treated with

the Goblins of Terakan and won their support where others

had failed. Now it seemed the Emperor meant to deal with the

Swamp Goblins in a similar fashion. But they were a breed

apart and the only thing kiz knew about the Fallen Land was

that it \-VaS. a place of great beauty but more terrible nightmare,

ki:z. seatedhimself on deep cushions as the tower guards

removed the hoods from the giant condors and released th

tethers. The vast balloon surgedupwards on wave of chill air

then swung about as the condors spread their wings and took

the strain on the lines of their harnesses. The taught lines sangin the wind and the silk of the balloon flapped loudly, like a

tent in the teeth of a sandstorm. Only here the sand was

crystals of ice, the storm. was that of revolution and Tarimek

~iz was flying into the teeth of it.

TH~ARTOTDIPLOMACY

Emperor Nizar met them in the Marble Court. Nearly two

hundred Goblins from. both the Fallen Land an d the city of

'Ierakan, more 1ike a 'War party than a diplomatic embassy. Clad

infull armor he sat on a raised dais at one end oi the court and

watched as the delegation approached over the white marble

flagstones. The two spokesmen of the delegation moved ahead of

the main body and came to a halt at the foot of the dais. They

searched the archways surrounding the courtyard uneasily for it

seemed the Emperor was alone. Nizar watched in amusement as

the th.ought of making an attempt on his life flashed in their eyes.

"Welcome. • He said and his voice rang strong and

powerful around the courtyard. "How may the Blood Throne

serve its subjeces from Terakan and the distant Fallen land. "

The Goblins exchanged meaningful looks.

"Greetings Emperor." The Ambassador from Terakan

bowed, though he remained on his feet, an affront that would

have earned him death had he not already been sentenced to

such. "We the High Lords of Terakan, respectfully demand

independence from the Blood Throne. The Goblins have lived

for too long under the thrall .ofKharabad. "Nizar'e muscles bunched beneath his armor; The urge to

break the ambassador's neck was almost irresistible but he

wanted to hear what the ambassador from the Swamp

Goblin's had to say.

"And the Fallen Land, what demands do they make of theBlackblood Emperor?"

The Swamp Goblin ambassador took a step forward and

there was the barely discernible sound of many hidden bows

being drawn. The Goblins glanced. about the courtyard

nervously and the ambassador held his place, There was no

gesture of deference from the spokesman of the Fallen Land as

he struck a p.ose of austerity. His strange, segmented armor

shimmered in the sun with an iridescence of crimson and

green and he even had the audacity to gesture towards Nizar

with his jagged, mandible-shaped spear. Nizar's eyes narrowed

imperceptibly and it was a mark of his self-discipline

that he did not attack.

"No more will the Burning Star trespass in our domain, If

Kharabad requires the bounty of our lands it must pay like

ethers must pay. Further, the Blood Throne shall recognize the

Children of the Gourd as a race apart from the Blackbloods.

The ancient ties will bind us no longer fer we hear the song of

the Fallen Land and you do not, Finally, we demand that

Kharabad returns to us Sarukh'ti Nishtar."

Nizar looked down at the Goblin ambassadors; their

confidence infuriated him. Bukhir had cautioned him not to

act in haste but to think of anyway that they might increase

the time they needed. He paused only a moment as the cold

stone of fury warmed in his belly. "Io hell with caution!" He

thought.

Nizar leapt forward and his sword-arm was a blur as he

brought his falchion round in a great an: that passed between

the head and shoulders of the ambassador from Terakan. The

Swamp Goblin ambassador seemed frozen in shock as the head

of his fellow emissary sailed through the air andbounced .off

the flagstones by his feet.

All around the courtyard Orcs and Ogres c.ha:rge.dout from

the archways that, till now, had seemed sc empty. Nizar could

almost hear Bukhir cursing him as the Goblins recovered from

the surprise and surged towards him but Nizar only smiled, it

had been too long since he felt the thrill of'com bat in his veins.

The Swamp Goblin ambassador stumbled backwards as hisbodyguards put themselves between him and the advancing

Ogre. Bows thrummed from behind the Emperor and three

Goblin Swcrdmasters fell as Niaar engaged the Mantis Guard of

the Swamp Gcblins, He knew better than to underestimate an

enemy simply because of its size but he had always been a gifted

warrior and now the Mantis Guard would learn of h.is skill.

The first of them feinted to the left before switching his attack

but Nizar was not duped. he let the spear go past him and

brought his falchion up into the pit of the Goblin's arm. The

next Guard raised his spear high and Niw" kicked his steel-

shod foot into the Goblin's armored chest. The

Goblin coughed up blood. as it. hit the white

marble floor.A third guard managed to score a glancing blow on

Nizar's thigh but Nizar only snarled and punched the spiked

guard of his falchion into the Goblin's face. He sidestepped an

attack by a Goblin Swordmaster and used its body to shield

himself from the chitin spear of another Mantis Guard before

stabbing the Swordmaster and flinging its body aside. All around the Marble Court Blackbloods fought

Blackbloods. The Goblins were incredibly fast, darting in to

attack and dodging back out of danger but they wereoutnumbered and quickly overwhelmed by Nizar's

handpicked force. The Blackbloods turned the Goblin

delegation into a bloodbath and the white flagstones of the

Marble Court were slick with dark red blood.

Nizar had given orders that the Swamp Goblin ambassador

was not to be harmed. Now as the noise of killing subsided to

a deathly quiet, his warriors brought the ambassador forward,

The Swamp Goblin twisted in his captor's grip and spat at the

Emperor as he was thrust down at Nizar's feet. Nizar

smiled as he spoke to the spokesman from the Fallen

Land.

•So ambassador; it: seems we shall have the

pleasure of your company inKharabad for a whilelonger. I am very sorry but after due

considerati n I must refuse the demands

you have placed before the Blood Throne.

I trust you wiD convey our decision to the High Goblin at the

Tree of Life?"

The Goblin. spat out a curse and grunted as an Ore boot

ground his face Into the pool of blood beneath him..

Ni~ Bloodbound looked across the courtyard and was

content. A few Orcs and an Ogre lay among the dead but

already his servants were busy clearing away the carnage. TheMarble Court must be scrubbed clean, for tomorrow he would

meet Tariniek kuon the same spot and it would not do forone inclined to honesty t9 be privy to the slaughter that took

place here this day. The truth of the day's events might play

upon the conscience of ki1; and undermine his ability to

convince the Goblins of his sincerity.

Bukhir directed. the Orcs to remove the ambassador to

secure quarters and went to stand at his Emperor's shoulder:

"Unfortunate but inevitable Bukhir]"

"Quite so my lord."

"The city is under martial law?"

IN TH~ SWRYlCE OJ'

THWWMVERORTarimek Azi4 had never een Kharabad from the air before and

it took his breath away. A vast city of desert colored sandstone,

shimmering with gilded domes, onyx towers and marble palaces.

Surely it was the grandest city in all of Chronopia. The balloon

descended towards the landing tower at the Marble Court and

Tarimek could see a formal gathering assembled on the tiny

white square far below. He let the silk curtain fall back and

gathered his composure as he prepared to meet the Emperor:

The Orcs on the landing tower caught the trailing lines and

with practiced skill quickly secured the balloon. Tarimek Azi4stepped out into the bright sunlight of Kharabad and

descended the tower. The stones of the courtyard. felt

reassuringly solid as he strode between the ranks of the honorguard. At the far end of the courtyard sat the Emperor, with

the Grand Vizier Bukhir beside him as always, And beside

them, gagged and bound to an ornate chair was a Swamp

Goblin from the Fallen Land his yellow ~ was filled with

hate. Tarimek tried to assess the situation but whichever way

he looked at it he found no comfort in his thoughts.

As he reached the dais Tarimek immediately dropped to

one knee.

"Greetings great Emperor:""The Blood Throne welcomes its loyal Satrap. Rise.Tarirnek

Aziz, the Throne has need of your expertise."

"How may 1 serve you my Lord?"It was Bukhir who enlightened Tarimek on the current

situation, while Niz.ar looked on. He understood the decisionto put down the Gobkns of Terakan ..They had gone too far fordiplomatic persuasion and needed to learn their place. The

decision to pacify the Fallen land and the Jade House of the

Elves was more of a surprise. I<harabad must be in dire straits

indeed to concede so' much to those who. threatened it and

Tarimek found himself disappointed in his Emperor. He had

been suitably impressed at the sight of the Sarukh'ti Nishtar, he

had never seen it before. Now he was to be given the task of

returning it to the High Goblin at the Tree of Life. So. be itl It

was not for him to question the Blood Throne.

•And 50... • continued Bukhir, "the Sarukh'ti Nishtar

shall be placed in this chest and sealed by the Order of

the Burning Star so that none but the High Go.blin

himself may open it without destroying the ancient treasure of

the Fallen Land."Tarimek glanced at the chest, which did indeed bear the

gold and silver seal of the Burning Star over the lock.

"The Swamp Goblin delegation shall rest in I<harabad after

their long journey and the revered ambassador shall remain as

our guest in the palace until your safe return."

Tarimekincline.d his head at this concern for his wellbeing

though his misgivings were not lessened.

"When do I leave my Lord?"Nizar smiled at Tarimek's lack of hesitation.

·You leave tomorrow at first,~t, bound for the Rim of

the World. There. to meet the escort that will accompany you."As the Emperor left the court Tarimek tried to recall

everything he knew of the Fallen Land and even the very little

he knew filled him trepidation.

The following morning was cold and bright as Tarimek

watched the chest bearing the Sarukh'ti Nishtar being loaded

into the gondola of the balloon. The servants handling it took

great care to avoid the seal of the Burning Star. For many

Blackbloods the unfathomable secrets of the On: Alchemists were

a source f dread. Tarimek was sure that this was nothing more

than a precaution to deter the avarice of fools. And. yet he was

not 50 sure that he would have opened the chest himself. He

stepped into the Gondola and was not aware that the Emperor

and his Grand. Vizier had risen early to watch him leave.

"Do you think he will succeed Bukhir?""He already has my Lord. We received word in the night

that the Goblins of Terakan have been reassured by word of

his recall. They believe he has returned to treat with them as

he did once before."

Nizar smiled."Every week he buys us will see our army strengthened.

Ifhe survives to reach the Tree of Life we shall be in a position

to deal with the Swamp Goblins and their Elven allies of the

Jade House."

"And what ofTarimek Aziz then my Lord?"

"His life is in the hands of fate Bukhir. But there are

times when we must all mike sacrifices for the

good of the Empire!"

THWRrM OTTH~WORtD

Tarimek Az~ stood on the Rim of the World and looked down

on the jungle canopy of the Fallen Land. The first parley with

the Swamp Goblins had gone better than expected. It seemed

they were not offended by the thought of their ambassador

and his delegation being held hostage at Kharabad and the very

thought of the Sarukh'ti Nishtar being so close made them

heady with excitement ..

The Emperor had provided Tarimek with a strong escort of

Orcs , Ogres and Trolls numbering one hundred in all. Four of

the Trolls were to be his personal guard. But one of the four, a

Troll by the name of Ghandruk, had denigrated Tarimek'sreputation and 'Iarimek would have executed him had it not

been for the other three. They beat their comrade 50 severely

that he could barely walk. After that there had been no more

comments and Tarimek let the matter rest. N w they waited

at the crest of a mighty waterfall for their Swamp Goblin

guides to arrive. Tarimek had studied. the only vague map he

had of the Fallen Land and had learned that the Tree of Life lay

fa r to the southeast of the great rift valley.

Their guides appeared suddenly at the edge of the cliff.

They bowed slightly to Tarimek and moved to look with

wonder at the chest bearing the ancient icon that was the stuff

of legend among their people. They gestured.at the mark of the

Burning Star as though warding off the touch of evil. Finallythey returned to Tarimek

"Corne!" They said. ffWe have fa r to travel and the way

will not be easy for you"

With that they passed over the Rim of the World. Tarimek

stepped forward and could see that there were steps cut into

the rock. A great number of stone stairways switching back

and forth up the sheer face of the cliff. With only a moment's

hesitation he maneuvered himself around and carefully began

the descent into the Fallen Land.

The jungle dosed around them while they were still highabove the forest floor: The descent was treacherous but

Tarimek lost only MO of his party on the R im of the

World, the Ogre that slipped and the Ore Assault

Warrior that was hit by the falling Ogre. When atleast they

reached the forest floor it seemed the very air was green and it

took along time for their eyes to adjust to the subdued light.

Tarimek regrouped his troops and insisted they rest and drink

from the falls before moving on further. The heat was

incredible. Not the blazing heat of direct sunlight but a

smothering heat that made it hard to breathe,

Their Swamp Goblin guides squatted down easily on the

great buttress roots of enormous trees nearby. The trees were

swathed in trailing vines, creepers and mosses of many

different colors, There were open areas of leaf litter, slimecovered mud and the deep pool where the waterfall thundered

dOW'Dbut mostly the jungle seemed. impenetrable. A mass of

broad glossy leaves, dense thickets and fern-like trees spiny

fronds. One of the Orcs went to bathe his face in the wide

river where it began to flow away into the jungle but one of

the guides leapt down and shouted for him to stop.

HS n aJGI ! " ,He said, "To them Orc flesh is the same as any

other." The Goblin made a quick motion with his thumb and

fingers tapping them together quickly like jaws or pincers.

Tarimek saw the exchange and wasn't inclined to ask which it

was supposed to be . The Ore decided to heed the warning and

moved.back to the frothing pool where apparently it was safe.

When they were ready to move on it seemed they wouldbe unable to cross the river for many miles. Apparently Ogres

and Trolls were too heavy for the upper ways, and Blackbloods

lacked the skill of climbing the razor vines. The Blackbloods

suffered the remarks for one simple reason ... they had no

choice..Tarimek assigned the chest to two powerful Ogres and

followed the guides as they led the way into the jungles of the

Fallen Land.

When night fell the jungle seemed to come alive. The

towering trees were on fire with glowing lights and Tarimek

realized to his discomfort that most of them were eyes. Faints

of light, most in pairs but many in unsettling dusters all

focused on the Blackbloods with alien malice.

The following day they came upon the

massing army of the Swamp Goblins. The jungle was thick

with them. Slung in hammocks woven from vines, gathered

on platforms lashed together like rafts, squatting under living

lean-toe or simply sitting on the lofty branches of the mightyforest trees. They all crowded forward surrounding the

Blackbloods completely. The air was filled with a deep

resonant buzzing as though from hornets the size of Ripper

Beasts. As the Blackbloods looked. up they could see that the

sound. matched. the image. Giant insect creatures with small

eyes and bloated bodies encased in chitinous plates. The

Swamp Goblins rode them like mounts and many swooped

down to inspect the Blackhloods and the famous chest that

was said to hold the Sarukh'ti Nishtar.

A small knot of Swamp Goblins came forward and

Tarimek could see that they were from different

tribes. The colors they wore were very

distinct and he could see the same colors mirrored inthe vast

swarm around them. Swarm was the only 'Way todescribe the

army of Swamp Goblins, 'Their armor and weapons gave them

the look of exotic insects and the way they moved through the

jungle reminded him of the army ants that often plagued the

eastern cities of the Empire, But there were obviously a

number of tribes among the swarm and they were not

comfortable .1.0such dose proxirniey to each other. Tarimek

began to recognize the different colorings among them. Blue

and green, black and red, black and yellow, the combinations

went on and on and he wondered if Niaar had known just

how great an army the Swamp Goblins could raise if the tribes

were to unite. There were tens of thousands of them and as he

watched Tarimek saw two flying Elven Dragon Bane drop

from a high platform and glide away into the jungle. Together

with the Elves of the Jade Hou e the Swamp Goblins posed a

more serious threat than he had ever thought possible,

Tarimek recognized the group that came forward as

Shaman, Goblins skilled in the use of 'plants and narcotics and

acting as medicine men for the tribes. They approached with

authority and made directly for the chest. Tarimek A z ; i : z ; was

experienced enough to know that this would be a crucial

moment in their expedition. He knew little of Swamp Goblin

life but he knew the-tribes warred against each other fiercely

and they would always look for some way to undermine theirenemies 01:' raise their own standing. To have this treasure pass

within. their control was a great temptation for all of them.

Slowly he moved towards the chest.

The Shaman stopped before the chest and Tarimek could

sense the tension in the guards standing near it. Then one of the

Shaman moved. forward to touch it.. One of the Ogre guards

reached out to restrain him but Tarimek grabbed the guard by his

shoulder, span him. round and. slapped him so hard he staggered

to retain his feet. From among the trees around them a score of

giant arachnoid creatures known as Sentinels appeared,

converging quickly on their position. The Blackbloods

immediately took a defensive stance and things would

Page 15: Fallen Land

have turned ugly ha d not the Goblin Shaman held up

his hand to halt the. giant spider-like Sentinels. He

turned to look atTarimek who stepped aside and with

a gesture of his hand invited the Shaman to approach

the chest. The Shaman paused only a moment before

stepping forward. and squatting beside the chest.

Gingerly he placed his skinny hand on it, beingcare:fu1

not to touch the seal of the Burning Stat:

"Sarukh'ti Nishtar?" He asked of Tarimek,

"Yes.· Replied the Emperor's faithful servant.

"To be delivered by my hand to the High Goblin at

the Tree of Life. io

"Else?" Ventured the Shaman.

"Else, by the art of the Burning Star, it shall

cea e robe and there shall be war between your

people and mine.• Tarimek's gaze did not waver as

he held the Shaman's eye.

Once again. Tarimek seemed to have passed the

test. The Sentinels moved back into the trees,

watching the Blackbloods as spiders might watch a

wasp struggling to break free of their web, content

to wait until the last of its strength was used up.

The Swamp Goblin swarm parted and their

guides led the Blackbloods on into the. jungle but

each of the tribes insisted on sending warriors toaccompany the expedition to the Tree of Life.

Tarimek was not in a position to object but the

sense of claustrophobia grew stronger and stronger:

Now the Blackbloods had a fully armed escort of

over two hundred Swamp Goblins and thus any

room for maneuver was effectively removed, He

went ahead of his party as the Goblins herded them

on, hoping that the value they afforded their

ambassador would. be . sufficient to buy their safe

return once the Spirit of the Fallen land was

returned to its rightful owners,

TRIBI! AND 'ILVESOTTin JADE Moun.

The nightmare stories of the Fallen Land did not do justice to

the reality of the jungle. For nine days Tarimek and his party

had struggled to keep up with the Goblins who delighted indisplaying the ease with which they negotiated the jungle. The

BIackbloods stumbled in their wake. If they weren't wading

through swamps of stinking mud they were hacking their way

throughundergrowth that snagged or pierced their skin with

hooked barbs and.wicked thorns, The jungle left t hem. covered

in shallow wounds and.weak with infection. Then there were

the clouds of insects. They plagued the Blackbloods mercilessly

converging on eyes, nose and mouth and fastening themselves

to the open wounds in their flesh and none dared to think of

the eggs and larvae they might be laying there.

The Swamp Goblins seemed to lake pleasure in all this

and it seemed the 13bckbloods would not live to

reach the Tree of Life for the jungle was Jii:e.rally eating them alive. Then

on the tenth day the Goblins became more alert and cautious. Ta.rimek

had refused to allow hi party to rest while the Goblihs did not but he

was immensely grateful for the brief respite this turn of events brought

them. They had just emerged from a.seemingly endless swamp and it

would. take many hours to reIn.OVI! the leeches that were. feasting on

their blood ..The ground raised u.p slightlyand became drier and.firmer,

They drew their falchions ready to hack their way t'hroughthe

unyielding barrier of malignant plant life.

As they entered a dearing Tarime.k queried one of the

guides about the source of their concern. It seemed they were

entering the territory of the Malovanti a.renegade tribe thathad refused to join the uprising. Suddenly, as though at a given

signal, the Swamp Goblins stopped. Tarimek listened and

searched the jungle bu.t could see nothing. Then without

warning the Malovanti attacked.

The Blackb100ds dived. for cover as poisoned darts flicked

through the air. Tarimek saw a Goblin take a dart in the chest

and fall to the ground shaking violently and clawing at his throat

before he died. He quickly assessed the ambush and tried to .

decide where the main thrust of the attack was coming from.

He may be a stranger to the jungle but to the rules of

engagement he was not. The colors of the Malovanti were deep

blue and crimson and Tarimek could see where they were most

strongly placed. Having made his decision he began toorChestrate a counter attack. His men were exhausted and

injured but they responded like the Blackbloods they were,

putting aside pain and discomfort and summoning their strength

fer battle. Tari .mek arranged his Assault Warriers quickly, a few

volleys of arrows would m a ke th eir attackers think twice aboutraising their heads. He raised. his falchion and the Orcs bent

their bows but before they loosed one of their guides leapt

forward and commanded t hem. to stop. T arim ek a lm o st ig no re d

you would .fight u.s also."

"And if you lose while we. sit by and do nothing?" He

asked cautiously.

"Then you will die and the Song of the Fallen Land will go

on without you."

Tarim.ek and the guide stared at each other while the battle

grew in intensity. Then they both turned suddenly as a

number of Flying Dragon Bane swept down out of the trees

and launched. javelins at the Goblins who defended the

Sarukh'ti Nishtar. It seemed the Malovanti had employed the

support of the Eiven Jade House in their attempt to gain

possession of the ancient treasure. Elven swordsmen,

spearmenand archers burst out of the jungle and attacked theGoblins from the other side of the clearing. Their green robes

serving as effective camouflage in the dense vegetation of the

jungle, Tarimek looked down at the stubborn guid.ebeside him,

"What about them?" He asked.

The Goblin considered the advancing Elves for second.

When he turned back he was smiling.

Tarimek laughed. and called his Assault Warriors to tum.

about. They drew their bows, loosed their arrows and brought

down the first rank of Elven warriors. They fired. a second

volley before the Ogres and the Trolls charged. The Elves

seemed surprised to be confronted by such a strong Blackblood

force but they were accustomed to fighting in the jungle and

they used the knowledge to their advantage and clashed

strongly with the Blackbloods. For the Blackbloods it was an

opportunity to vent some of the frustration that had been

growing since they began this expedition. They launched

themselves at the Elves and. when Ogres and Trolls attack en

mass there are few that can. stand Wore them. For all theirjungle skills the Elven sword and. spearmen were no match for

the frenzied Blackbloods. The jungle was loud with the sound

of battle and Tarimek yearned. to join the fray but he held his

ground beside the chest. He directed the Assault Warriors to

target the Dragon Bane that were. harrying the Goblins.

The Goblins themselves were in their element. They

leapt from the limbs of trees and darted through the

undergrowth, their chitin spears and mandible blades darting

and slashing. Tarimek was impressed by their skill. He

watched a. Mantis Guard I.eader from their escort fend off I

three Swamp Goblin Spearmen. The Mantis Guard killed all

three of his attackers but the last one managed to hamstring

the Mantis Guard before he died. Even then the Mantis Guard

struggled to fight on, limping to block the approach of yet more

attackers. He was cut down in short order but. he died well.

The glossy green leaves of the jungle were darkened with

blood. But finally the Blackbloods routed the Elves and

without the support of the Jade House the Malovanti losttheir advantage and were forced to call off the attack. They

faded away into the jungle almost as quickly as they had

appeared. The Malovanti had failed in their attempt to take the

Spirit of the Fallen Land.

The battle had raised the spirits of the Blackbloods and

changed the attitude of the Swamp Goblins. That night while

the Blackbloods rested the Swamp Goblins moved among them

tending to cuts and stings. They dressed wounds with healing

poultices. They cut out burrowing parasites and drew poison

with burning sticks. They soothed burns with the nectar of

flowers and even cut the throat of one Ogre who'd been bitten

by a particularly evil insect and was now beyond hope of

saving. Many of the Ogre's companions reacted harshly to this

but 'Iarimek merely thanked the Goblins for their kindness.

When they moved off in the morning the Blackbl00ds chewed

aromatic leaves and covered their skin with pungent sap to de-

ter many of the biting insects. They learned how to move

through the undergrowth without tearing themselves to

shreds. The Goblins laughed at their efforts but as clumsy as

they were the injuries from barbs, spines and thorns grew less.

The Blackbloods were beginning to think they might finally

come to terms 'With the jungle. But that was until they

reached the Devil's Garden.

At dawn on the 27th day of the Crimson Moon the City of

Emperor had decided not to bend to their demands and the fust

thing they knew of hi:s decision was an ominous cloud of dust

on the horizon to the west of the city. The city was thrown

into panic for the main body of their army was encamped h~

Swamp Goblins on when to attack. No such word had arrived

and it: became apparent that N= had found. some way to delay

the assault on his capital Now he sent an army against them

and it approached £.rom the city of Japurin the west. Terakan

sat at the summit of a sharp ridge and the fortified appsoach

road coidd be well defended when the city's garrison was at full

strength. But the garrison was not at full strength for they had

co mm itted. m ost o f it in preparation for a n a ss a.w t on Kharabad.

The High Goblins dispatched their&stest Ripper Beasts to

recall their army back to the city. But evenas the couriers

sprinted. £.rom the city gates they knew itwas too late.

The Ogre warlord from Japur commanded powerful siege

engines and a great host of Kutara cavalry. Behind them

marched more than six tho usan d O rcs,. O gres and Trolls.

They reached the foot of the approach road atnightfull and

attacked without delay. The warlord moved his siege engines

High Lords ordered the pitifully small garrison to attack. The

Two days later the main. Goblin

anny returned. to the city. A great

war-herd of Myrmadons shook the

earth as they thundered out of the

low hills to the north of the city.

Warbands of Ripper Beasts flanked

the herd and behind. them came the

infantry running in the heat of the

day only to fmd their city occupied

Goblins stood on the city walls

trying to take it back but the

strength of their army lay in the

they could not hope to fight a battle

reducing the city to rums. Their city

was lost, their revolution ended

before it had really begun. But above

all the Blackbloods respected

strength. The Emperor had shown

himself stronger than they and

therefore a worthy sovereign. Their

bitterness was searing-hot but short-

TM~ DWrl'S C ;ARDWH '6TH DAY 01' 1'Hi! GOLDEN MOON:

Tar imek lost more warriors on the first day in the Devil's Garden,

than he had inall the weeks since entering the FallenLand. If the

jungle had a malevolent heart then this region of stinking

swamps, murderous plants and corrosive spores was it. Things

lived in the slimy green water, vile things that never quite

revealed themselves andwere al l the more terrifying because of it.

Even the Swamp Goblins seemed subd!ued and were especially

careful in choosing the routes they would take. The towering

mangrove trees were supported by a dense latticework of roots

and the Goblins tried to use these as much as possible. The

B1ackbloodis were not so nimble and were forced to forge their

way through the swamp itself. One of the Orcs said that theywere fortunate that the Malovanti had not chosen to attack them

here but one of their guides looked at him with scorn.

"No one fights in the Devil's Garden," he said, "they only

die!"

Tarimek thought of this as he waded through the green-

black sludge that swirled around his waist like oil. He moved

with great care trying to test the spongy ground, before taking

another step. He had no desire to share the fate of the Troll

who had tripped on a submerged root and fallen face first in

the noxious soup. He'd regained his feet quickly; spiting out

the foul tasting muck and rinsing his mouth with some of

their precious water but the Swamp Goblins had looked at

him doubtfully and Tarimek asked them why."I f he is weak he will die quickly." They said, "I f he is

strong he will die slowly. ft

Tarimek had never known a weak Troll.

He'd 10 t three Orcs who were too slow to get to safety

when the Goblins cried out a warning. Something had snatched

th.em down so quickly that they had no time to cry out before

they were gone. Four Ogres and an Orchad failed to wake one

morning and were found in their makeshift bier, covered in a

fine yellow powder from a nearby fungus. The powder had

liquefied their flesh and it dripped from their bones like vomit.

All this was in addition to the incessant irritation of the

insects and mosquitoes that followed them in clouds and the

daily practice of removing the leeches from each other's skin.

Tarimek dreaded. to think how they would have fared without

the lotions, balms and ministerings of their guides.

After more than a week of this seething hell the

Blackbloods were beginning to weaken. The Swamp Goblins

grew concerned about two things; the health of those who

carried the chest and the wellbeing ofTarimek A:;i2; who they

believed must deliver the Sarukh'ti Nishtar to the High

Goblin in person. Tarimek was surprised by the depth of their

belief. He knew it wouldn't matter who delivered the chest tothe High Goblin but even he believed that the chest was

indeed protected against tampering. This belief irritated him

but he was growing increasingly irritated for it seemed this

putrid swamp would go on for ever and Tarimek felt compelled

to challenge their guides..

"Is there no other way?" He asked.

"You cannot cross the rivets and the Snaka pools. We

refuse to enter the domain of the Stygian demons and the

Toltach hold the northern crossing of the Black Ravine they

would succeed where the Malovanti failed. The Devil's Garden

is difficult but some of you will survive,"

By the time they emerged at the southern edge of the

Devil's Garden Tarimek's band was reduced to a little overfifty. The last day had claimed nearly a dozen as they crossed

an open expanse of steaming mud. The mud seemed to be

heated from below. It threw up huge bubbles of foul smelling

gas and the Blackbloods felt as though they were being boiled

alive. The Goblins, being smaller and lighter, made use of the

circular leaves of the giant pond lilies, using them as rafts and

stepping stones. The Blackbloods had no choice but to take

their chances and hope that a gas bubble did not rise beneath

their feet, for If it did they quickly found themselves caught in

the sucking mud and once it closed around their legs there was

Page 21: Fallen Land

no. hope of escape, They were drawn dovvn very slowly and

there was nothing their companione could do. to answer the

pleas for help, the drowning snarls Dr the sight of 'Blackblood

hands reaching up to the air that was far beyend their reach,

When at last they reached higher ground Tarimek insisted

they rest and recover their strength. The Goblins protested but

he would have none of it. They spent four days tending

injuries and purging their bodies of the sicknesses that ailed

them. They cleaned their armor sharpened their falchions and

shook off the lethargy that had. begun to descend en them.

Tarimek took the opportunity to learn. more about the jungle.

He questioned. their guides endlessly and even managed to .fillinmany of the blank areas en hismap.

They were nearing the Black.Ravine, a bottomless chasm,

which they would follow south to the Tree of Life. He learned

that the Stygian had risen. up and claimed a large area to the

southwest. The Geblinsc:ould not conceal the fear they felt for

the Stygian who it seemed were as well adapted to the jungle

as they were to the southern deserts or th temperate plains

of the Blackblood Empire. Far to the north lay the Dead

Swamp and the spawning groves of the arachnid creatures that

the Swamp Goblins tamed and used as mounts. Despite the

horror of the last few weeks Tarimek could not help but

wonder at the beauty he observed around him. Every sunrise

was like the birth of life itself as great shafts of green-filtered

sunlight thrust down through the mist. The richness and

diversity of flowers and fruits was more brilliant even than the

gardens of Kharabad. But It seemed the more beautiful the

flora the more treacherous and deadly it was to creatures

attracted by its beauty and Tarimek wondered what the

warrior poets of "Be~ekmight make of such a paradox.

When his men were rested they moved on. After the trial of

the Devil's Garden the normal jungle seemed almost pleasant. They still had far to go but they had learned much and the next

few weeks should see them arrive at the Tree of Life. Tarimek

looked forward to . disposing of his burden and was ,grateful

that the Emperor had possessed the foresight to take hostages

against their sate return. He had his map and was not ignorant

of navigating the wilderness but he did not relish the thought

of retracing their steps through the Devil's Garden without

the aid of Swamp Goblin guides. Hefting his falchion he strode

forth on the last leg of his mission to deliver the Sarukh'ti

Nishtar to the High Goblin at the Tree of Life.

the light of torches and the largeseed-likeetructures that the

Goblins used. as dwellings. They called these dwell ings gourds

and it was from these that the Gourd Cities got their name.

They glowed like giant lanterns and Tarimek could see Goblins

emerging from them as the Blackbloods approached. Higher upthe tree were even larger gourds rimmed with platforms.

Milling around these gourds and landing on the platforms

were many of the giant insect creatures that Tarimek now

knew were called Drones.

Tarime.k felt his heart quicken as the entire population of

the Tree of Life swarmed. down from the Tree to converge on

their position.. The noise of nearly a. hundred scuttling

Sentinels made his skin crawl. and the sound of the Drones:

wings thrummed in the air while the Goblins themselves

skittered. and swung down from the Tree.

There came the shrill sound of horns and pipes and a tight for'

rnation f Drones emerged from a splendid gourd near the cen-ter of the Tree. They spiraled down and came to rest at the top

of a steep-sloping roadway that Tarimek quickly realized was a

monstrous root. The crowd of Goblins on the root parted to

reveal an open space and a ring of bright torehes suddenly

sp.r:angup around a crystal seat that was so grand it could only

be described as .a throne. Tarimek could just make out that it

was carved from pale yellow crystal in the likeness of a Lotus

Flower .

A distinctive looking Shaman dismounted from one of the

Drones and all the Swamp Goblins bowed low as the High

Goblin took his p la ce o n the throne. Beyond the Tree of Life the

darkness was impenetrable but here beneath its spreading limbs

the night was filled with light. At a gesture from the High

Goblin their guides led.Tarimek and the Blackbloodsforvvard.

throne the trunk of the Tree rose up like a gray-green cliff face,

Tarim.ek immediately went to-one knee and all the Blackbloods

followed his lead. The High Goblin seemed suitably impressed

by their gesture of respect and with a wave of his hand bade

them rise. Tarimek looked at the diminutive figure that hadmanaged to unite the Swamp Goblins like never before.

Tarimek looked round at the thousands of Goblins surround,

ing them and was proud of the Blackbloods who bore them'

selves with dignity and refused to be intimidated. The four

Trolls of his bodyguard fell into place beside him adopting the

stance they would for the Emperor himself. The spokesman

"What news Bukhir?"

"Good my Lord." Answered Bukhir as he knelt before his

Tar imek A2.iz could. not believe they were still alive. Though

how long they would remain so he had no idea. When the

High Goblin had lifted the head of his ambassador from the

chest there had been a long moment of stunned silence as the

gathered swarm tried to comprehend the depth of the

Blackblood treachery. Then, still brandishing the severed head,

the High Goblin had screamed ....

"Kill them!' Kill them. am "

And suddenly the Blackbloods were fighting for their lives.

Tarimek's bodyguard dosed up around him and killed a dozen

Goblins that tried to reach Tarimek in the first few seconds of

the battle. The rest of the Blackbleods turned around and be,

ganto cleave their way down the massive root ..They were for-

tunate that the root prevented them. from being surrounded.

They fought to front and rear as they worked their way d wn,

while those to the edge of the root struggled to fend off the vi,

cious attacks from the Drones that dived down upon them.

The High Goblin screamed out orders and the entire Goblin

swarm swept down to converge on the small band of Black,

bloods trying to escape.

Tarimek was blazing with fury. He attacked anything that

came within reach, Drones. Mantis Guard even the Sentinels

that were trying to scale the steep sides of the root. For

precious minutes his anger at being usedblind.ed his

judgement. Finally he asserted his self-control and tried tofathom a way out of this deathtrap. It took him about. three

seconds to realize there was no way out.

Thousands of Goblins massed around the base of the

mighty root and as strong as the Blackblcods w-ere the Goblins

were bringing them down. Above them more Drones flooded

out from the gourds higher up the Tree. Tarimek looked hack

up the root towards the massive trunk of the Tree. The High

Goblin was driving his own elite force of Mantis Guard, and

spearmen down after the B1ackbloods. Tarimek was about to

resign himself to a glorious death when something echoed in

his memory. Something; some gem of information that

tempted hope. He remembered a scroll bearing

the seal of the Durning Star and a peculiar message about

Swamp Goblin society. He struggled. to discern the significance

of the memory and. then it struck him!'

.... a ll social activity, From the gathering of food to the

waging of war, is suspended upon the death of the High

Goblin."

'farimek A z . i . z turned to look directly at the High Goblin.

The High Goblin met his stare but misread his intent. It was too

late to regroup hi s force, they were fighting for their lives but

Tarimek caught the attention of the four bodyguards that fought

beside him and gave them a new order, one they d id not

understand hut one they obeyed without question or hesitation ..

"Kill the High Goblin!"

The four Trolls who'd been fighting as a rear guard now

pressed back up the wide limb and attacked their attackers. The

Mantis Guard and Goblin Spearmen were taken by surprise as

the Trolls tore into them, Tarimek wentwith them, Hacking

and thrusting, dodging the rapid attacks from Chitin Spears

and Mantis Claws. The Mantis Guard and spearmen were

fierce opponents but no match for the Trolls and a Deathseeker

Ogre. They forged upwards and the throng of Goblins between

them and the High Goblin grew less and less. Finally the High

Goblin realized their intent and saw that he was in deadly

peril. There was no way to retreat from the root as it butted

against the sheer face of the Tree's trunk. The High Goblinbegan to grow frantic and called out to the Drones that were

harrying the Blackbloods. One of them broke away from the

battle and swooped down towards him. Tarimek could not

allow him to escape, he charged forward and the Trolls

fo.llowed. his lead, They were only a few yards away when the

High Goblin finally dragged the rider from its Drone and leapt

onto the creature's back. The confused Drone fanned its wings

as its new rider tried to raise it up to safety, The High G blin

screamed out a harsh laugh even as Tarimek saw the Troll

named Ghandruk launch himself into the air. He leapt .high

and grabbed. the Drone's trailing legs. The creature

hissed as it fell back down against the Tree and jabbed

As the scream faded away an unnatural silence descended

which the battle ended. The Swamp Goblins simply ceased to

fight and drew back out of blade's reach. The scene had an

unreal quality about it and Tarimek moved carefully as though

the fighting would begin again at any moment. The hostili.ty

Without the knowledge they had gained from their gui.desthe

Blackbloods would never have survived a week but after so

long in the jungle they were able avoid the worst of the

dangers around them. Tarimek knew that by now a new High

first thing on his agenda would be the capture and. slow

beginning to doubt if the.y would J:i.velong enough. for the

sighting theancient pyramid he had. slowly retraced their steps

to give the ~iggurat awide berth. He. drove the Blackbloodsmercilessly, allowing only an hour or two each night for them

.consequences should they fail to escape.

The first thjng they knew of the Stygian presence was the

disappearance of an Ore to the rear of the party" There had

been no sound, no cry :forhelp. One minute he was there the

next he was gone and only a few drops of blood bore witness

to violence and there was no time to search for their comrade.

After that frrst attack Tarimek had lost at least one of his

party each day. There had been ,only one occasion when the

Stygian had attacked openly but the desperation of the

Blackbloods had served them well as they tore into the Stygian

Tarimek: trembling with adrenaline. Afte.rthat he had pushed

his men harder than ever;

Slowly the Stygian attacks grew less and Tarimek

realized they must be moving out of their

knowledge that they would no longer be protected by the

reputation of the Stygian. Th.ey were moving back into the

Valley of the Screaming Wind to descend in.to the Fallen I.an.d

Kuzaras, Ripper Beasts and Myrrruldon Bulls used the wider

army to descend the cliffs and there were many casualties

during the decent.

'The members of the 'Blackblood army did not suffer the

their Emperor's bloody mark on the jungle.

What did it matter if they lost a few warriors to the voracious

Scouts reported that the Swamp Goblin army was massed

a little over iii. day's march east and after regrouping at the base

of the cliffs the Blackblood commanders led.their army into the

jungle. The army or the Blackbloods found what Tarimek and

his hand had found. One did not move. through the jungle, one

pain and! discomfort as, with thorns, barbs and. burning sap

the jungle renanded you that you did not belong.

Over seven thousand Blaekbloods hacked their way intothe Fallen Land and the jungle dosed around them. Then at

dawn on the 12th Day of the Barren Moo.nthe Swamp

Goblins attacked.

The Blackbloods had no time to arrange their forces and

would not have known how to arrange them in any event.

The Goblins attacked from all sides. Drones flew overhead and

The Blackbloode needed no second order. They turned and fled

for the Rim of the World.

A deafening roar of victory erupted in the jungle as the

Swamp Goblins routed the Blackbloods. They pursued them

savagely; cutting down stragglers and trying to overtake the

army and prevent it from escaping the Fallen Land but the

desperate Blackbloods forged on. Finally they reached the cliffs

and began to climb. The Myrmadon Bulls and Kutara charged

up the steep, switching slopes trampling any foot soldiers that

got in their way. The infantry scaled the perilous steps trying

to outpace the Goblins that snapped and slashed at their heels.Hundreds of Drones flew up the cliff-face picking off

Blackbloods who tried. to cling to the vertical rock. There were

many Blackbloods who, seeing that they' could not escape,

chose to turn away from the rock and launch themselves at the

Drones. Many missed their targets and plunged a.thousand

feet or more into the jungle below but some managed to

grapple their insect tormentors and they went down together,

locked in combat as they crashed into the canopy of leaves.

Seven thousand Blackbl00ds had entered the Fallen Land, less

than half that number returned. Finally, those who were going

to escape the Fallen land did so..The Swamp Goblins swarmed

up the cliffs after the Blackbloods, thousands upon thousands

of them. It seemed they wanted to press home the advantagethey had gained and for the first time inover a thousand years

the Swamp Goblins emerged from the land which was theirs.

Large groups of Drones rose up over the Rim of the World

as the Goblins teemed over the edge. Sentinels and Swamp.

Fiends scaled the cliffs with ease and clawed their way onto

the flat ground that led into the Valley of the Screaming Wind.

Swamp Goblin Shaman empowered their troops with

off the Swamp Goblin armor as they swept after the fleeing

Blackbloods like a colony of army ants on the march.

As the Blackbloods streamed. down the broad valley they

were met by a Goblin force coming in the opposite direction.

But these were not Swamp Goblins dosing a trap they were

Blackblood Goblins fighting in the service of the Blood Throne,

The earth shook before them as a great war-herd of

Myrmadons filled the valley. At the head, of the herd mounted

on a white Mynnadon Bull rode. an Ogre. He called out ordersto the fleeing Blackblcods and they turned back to face the

enemy pursuing them. Qpickly the Blackbloods formed up on

either side of the war-herd like the horns of a mighty bull. Then

with solid rock beneath their feet and nothing to hinder their

progress they turned back to face the Swamp Goblins. They had

to jog to keep up with the MynnacIons but they were beyond

feeling tired. They were free of the ju:ngle and now they would

fight on ground that suited their ways of battle,

The Swamp Goblins came on and al l they saw was a great

cloud of sand and dust blowing towards them, born up by a

wind that screamed in their ears. And then the giant

Myrmadons emerged from the stinging cloud of dust.

A solid wall of towering beasts that shook theearth as they trampled forward. To the Swamp

Goblins it seemed as though a mountain was

moving against them. Those at the front tried

to stop the Mynnadons with darts and

spears but the mighty beasts crushed them

under foot. Others tried to scale the steep

slopes to either side of the valley but the

Dlackblood 'horns of the bull' drove them back into the path of

the stampeding Mynnadons. Sentinels and Swamp Fiends

slowed the Myrmadons but were smashed aside by the massive

charging beasts. The Swamp Goblins seemed furious that their

erstwhile allieshad turned against them but curses and fury did

not save them from being driven back into the Fallen Land.

Now it was their turn to flee. The Blackbloods and GoblinMyrmadons drove them forward. and pushed them back over

the Rim of the World. A number ofMyrmadons were unable to

slow their charge and. plunged headlong over the cliffs. Finally

the Blackblood force stood.at the edgeof the cliffsand roared in

victory, A hollow victory for there were many more Dlackblood

corpses feeding the Fallen Land than there were Swamp Goblin.

Skirmishes went on for days as the two forces probed each

other's defenses but neither could. make any progress against

the other. Each was master of the territory they held and it

was folly for one to try and attack the other. The

battle at the Rim of the World was at an end. The

Swamp Goblin uprising was finished but so toowas any chance of the Ore Alchemists

DTHRONW

The Emperor NizarBloodbound sat upon the Blood Throne

with the weight of the Empire lying heavy on his shoulders.

And yet he was content. The Goblins ofTerakan had been put

down and brought back into the Blackblood fold. The Swamp

Goblins were a different matter. N= hadistened to reports

of the massacre in the Fallen Land and burned with anger and

frustration but when all things were over and done it was notvictory' or defeat that decided greatness but a refusal to bow to

the will of others. Even when his enemies had thought him.

too weak to defend his position he had drawn on the strength

that made him Emperor and put down those who thought to

challenge him. The Fallen Land was lost to him but he couldbear the loss. They knew they could not challenge his seat ofpower and the order of the Burning Star would have to find

other sources for the components they required.

Bukhir entered the throne room quietly and knelt for a

long time before the Emperor broke out of his reverie and

acknowledged him. As Bukhir went to stand beside his

Emperor his eyes were drawn to the huge glowing emerald

that was now mounted on golden stand. The stand was

fashioned in the shape of a tree and Bukhir smiled at the irony.

NWr followed the ~ of his Grand Vu.ier:

'''Magnificent is it not Bukhir?"

"Indeed 50 my Lord."

"Tell me Bukhir, would you give up this bauble to save ourEmpire?"

"Only if 1had no other choice my Lord." The two Ogres

exchanged a meaningfu1look then laughed out loud.

"My thoughts exactly Bukhir." Nizar gazed at the

Sarukh'ti Nishtar and spoke to his advisor without looking

him. "What news Bukhir; you seem agitated."

Bukhir looked at the Emperor. He disliked the way Nj~

could read his mind for there were precious few that could.

"There is someone that seeks an audience with you. my

Lord. A 'traveler' ifyou will. He arrived in the night with a

caravan from the city of Hazad and. refuses to be

"1 have told you Bukhir, there shall be no personal

audiences until we have regained control of the territory we

lost in dealing with the Goblin uprising. Why do you bring

this before me when you know my mind on this matter?"

"I thought you might wish to grant this audience my Lord.

The individual claims to be one Tarimek ~."

Ni1M looked up from the priceless treasure before himand.

settled his gaze on his advisor. He saw no evidence of jest in

his eyes.

"Is it him Bukhir?"

"The Ogre in question looks very different from the

dignified Satta p that left the palace several months ago my Lordbut yes Ido believe it is."

N~ sat back heavily, contemplating the ramifications of

Tarimek's' return seeing a number of potential! dangers. But

despite his concerns he found himself to be deeply satisfied at

the news. He raised himself up in the Blood Throne and

addressed. his Grand Vizier,

•Show him in Bukhir, We can always spare the time for

one who has served the Empire with such devotion."

Bukhir turned. to the doors of the throne room and clapped

his hands sharply. The doors swung open. The Ogre thatentered the room was as grim and hard a looking individual! as

N~ had ever seen. He wore the armor and the colors of a

Deathseekez His body was lean and powerful and his facebore not the slightest trace of weakness. The Ogre wore a black

patch over his left eye and his dark skin was covered ina mass

of scars and newly healed wounds. The Ogre strode forward

and stopped before the Blood Throne but he remained on his

feet. His gaze was implacable as he gaud on the Emperor who

had sentenced him to death.

NWr returned Tarimek's gau and Bukhir watched the

two Ogres with interest, Rarely bad he experienced an

exchange between two individuals so strong of presence. He

was not surprised. by Tarimek's show of defiance and he

wondered how the matter would end. N~ held

Ta:riroek's eye with an unwavering gaze, There

VIlaS no evidence of apology or remorse in his expression. He

had done what he needed to do to secure the: Empire and

would do it again without a second thought. As the tension

mounted Bukhir thought he saw the hint of a smile: in his

Emperor's eyes. A fierce glint that spoke of amusement and

deep respect and not of guilt or ridicule. The spark was

reflected in Tarimek's eye and then without a word Tarimek

bowed his head and knelt before his Emperor.

The Emperor looked down upon the:Satrap whom he had

believed to be dead and hisheart swelled with a fierce love for

this Ogre who served the Blood Throne with such

COur.lge and dignity. He rose from his Throne

and descended the steps towards the kneeling Tarimek. Then

Bukhir watched in awed silence as the Emperor offered

Tarimek his hand. Tarimek looked at Nizar's hand and grasped

it in his own as the Emperor raised his most loyal subject. to

his feet..

Bukhir raised an eyebrow at this unprecedented show of

respect but he was deeply satisfied that Tarimek A~ had

survived the Fallen Land. It was many months since he had

sealed a scroll with the mark of the Burning Star and ended

the message with the words, ..

SWAMP C;O 'BtrNS

M.S,.ORVAll things are born of the Tree of Life and all things are given

back to the Tree of Life. This is the basis of Swamp Goblin

belief and governs almost every aspect of life in the Fallen

Land. The Swamp Goblins do not see themselves as living in

the Fallen Land they see themselves as part of it. Although

they share a distant ancestry with the Goblins of the

Blackbloods they see themselves as a distinct race and often

refer to themselves as the Children of the Fallen Land or the

Children of the Gourd. So ancient is their history that no one

knows whether the Blackblood Goblins came first and

migrated to the Fallen Land or whether the Goblins originated

there and were drawn into the Empire when the four races of

the Blackbloods first found strength in unity. The truth of the

matter is now academic for the recent uprising has seen the

last links between the two races severed once and for all.

Until recently there existed a healthy trade between the

two nations and the Blackblood Empire benefited from having

such an impenetrable region covering its eastern. flank. The

Ore Alchemists from the Order of the Burning Star relied

heavily on the exotic substances to be found in the rich

rainforest. They would often lead parties over the Rim of the

World to search out new ingredients and components for use

in their art. However, in recent years the relationship between

the Swamp Goblins and the Jade House of the Elves has

grown stronger giving the Goblins the confidence to challenge

the right of the Alchemists to enter their land. As this attitude

of defiance spread friction between the Swamp Goblins and

the Blackbloods increased. This unrest made the Goblins of

Terakan bolder than ever and so the wind of change began to

blow. With the support of the Jade House the Swamp Goblins

and the Goblins of Terskan rose up against the Emperor Nizar

Bloodbound. However, the uprising did not succeed. The

Goblins ofTerakan were defeated by the army from Japur and

although Nizar's anny was routed by the Swamp Goblins in

the Fallen Land his refusal to yield and his display of strength

has earned him much respect from all quarters.

Now the Swamp Goblins have closed their land off to a ll

strangers and. they keep a sharp vigil along the Rim of the World

for any that might think to enter their domain in secret to plunder

the treasures to be fOW1dthere. There are two areas however, that

they are unable to control, The area. of the jungle where the

Stygian have emerged, which lies to the south, and the area to the

north which seems to be suffering from the shadow of sickness

that the Shaman are unable to remedy. A malady of rot is slowly

spreading down into the Fallen Land and the Swamp Goblins have

been slow to recognize the influence of the Devout who

seem eager to claim all lands for their dark master no

matter how difficult and impenetrable they may be .

soe.nvSwamp Goblin society is a difficult thing to fathom. The values

they place on life are often so alien that the defy

understanding. Life in the Fallen Land revolves around two

things; the Gourd Cities and the Yellow Lotus. The Gourd

Cities are the vast trees in which the strongest tribes make

their homes. These broad trees tower for more than a

thousand feet over the jungle and can accommodate many

thousands of Goblins. There are only five Gourd Cities known

to the outside world but others surely exist in the depths of I

the jungle. The name 'Gourd City' is derived from the fruiting

bodies that are produced by the trees. These take the form of

enormous pods, hanging from the branches of the tree like

great lanterns. They are known as gourds and are hollowed out

by the Swamp Goblins and used as dwellings, barracks and

other types of buildings.

The Yellow Lotus flower affects every aspect of Swamp

Goblin life. This potent herb is used in everything from

cooking and medicinal remedies to the preparation of poisons

and the potions used. by the Swamp Goblin Shaman. It is a

truly wondrous substance with many astounding qualities but

it is also a powerful toxin and only those with a deep

knowledge of herb-lore know how to prepare it for the many

uses to which it is put. The knowledge and cultivation of the

Yellow Lotus have played a major part in the relationship

between the Swamp Goblins and the Jade House of the Elves

who have grown increasingly dependant on this powerful

narcotic. The main areas of cultivation are centered around. the

Gourd Cities and this makes such places even more highly

desirable to the tribes of the Swamp Goblins.

There are hundreds of Swamp Goblin tribes in the Fallen

Land and they live in a constant flux of sporadic wars and

shifting territory. The strongest tribes fight for control of the

Gourd Cities. The battles for the Gourd Cities are swift and

savage and rarely last longer than a day or two but in all thefighting the tree is never harmed. The warring tribes fight

around the tree until one emerges victorious and then the

fighting stops. The defeated tribe immediately departs the

Gourd City leaving it in the hands of the. victors. The

important thing is that the tending of the tree is not

interrupted.

Governing each of the tribes are the Shaman. They know

the secrets of preparing the Yellow Lotus and walk the Spirit

World from which they gain secret knowledge vital for the

tribe's survival. They alone can drink the golden sap of the

Gourd Cities without dying a slow and painful death. By

drinking the sap they pass into a trance during which

they commune with the jungle and. hear the Song

of the Fallen Land more clearly than eve ....

Page 36: Fallen Land

8/4/2019 Fallen Land

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/fallen-land 36/94

While i.n this state they can perceive the state of affairs in all

the other Gourd! Cities. This supports the notion that all the

far-flung Gourd Cities are actually a single semi-sentient

organism passing i.nfonnation from one to the other in the

essence of its sap. This allows for instantaneous

communication between the Gourd Cities, though it takes a

skillful Shaman to interpret the nuances in the golden sap.

It is in this way that the Elder Shaman from all across theFallen Land learn of the High Goblin's death at the Tree of Life.

The Tree of Life is the largest and oldest of the Gourd. Cities and

the High Goblin is the closest thing the Swamp Goblins have

to a king. The High Goblin may come from any of the tribesand remains in. place at the Tree of Life until his death even if

another tribe takes over the Tree. Upon hi.s demise his body is

absorbed into the Tree and his spirit becomes one with the

Tree's sap. The Elder Shaman at the other Gourd Cities perceive

this when they drink the sap and immediately pass into the

Spirit World. There they contest each other for dominance,

though knowledge of this ethereal struggle defies

understanding. Within a matter of days one of the Elder

Shaman emerges from the Spirit World as the new High Goblin

and begins the journey to take his place at the Tree of life.

In recent years the golden sap of the Gourd cities has taken

on a bitter taste and the Shaman speak of demons and terrors

that stalk the Spirit World. They attribute this to the influenceof the Devout whose influence is encroaching from the north

where one of the Gourd Cities has fallen into decay. The tribe

tending it have become gluttonous, taking far more than they

need and returning far less than they should. They have even

started the practice of burning the dead, which is tantamount

to sacrilege in the eyes of the Swamp Goblins.

MrlrTARYThe Swamp Goblins are a war-like race but they do not fight

for personal gain like so many of the other ra.ces. Their wars

are territorial and essential to the survival of their race. The

constant shifting of territory keeps knowledge of the jungle

fluid, which is vital in a world where ignorance and stagnation

are in invitation. to death.

All the tribes are composed of the same types of warriors

and the design. of their armor and weapons is also the same.

The color and markings of this armor differs greatly however.

In centuries past the Goblins made use of body parts from the

giant insects in the jungle and now, even though they follow

traditional designs, they forge their armaments from copper,

gold and steel. The skillful blacksmiths impregnate the steel

with pigments from the crushed carapaces of the giant insects.

This gives the arms and armor of the Swamp Goblins a glazed

iridescence that i~ both beautiful and distinctive to each tribe.

The main body of their armies is made up of spearmen. The

light spearmen tend to be young warriors, while the heavy

speannen are older veterans who have survived. many a

campaign. They attack in concerted groups and "usetheir chitin

spears and shields with skill.

The Headhunters fight for the glory of the tribe and often

for the glory of self, though this is somewhat frowned upon.

They take trophies from the battles i.nwhich they figh t and notrophy is more highly prized than the head of your enemy.

These fanatical warriors have a ferocious reputation and are

often given a wide berth even by their own people.

There are two types of Swamp Goblin Hunters that also

fight in their armies, the Blowpipe Warriors and the Netters.

Th.e Blowpipe Warriors coat their needle-sharp darts in

various toxins and are deadly accurate at short range, while

the Netters attempt to snag the enemy in their nets before

pummeling them with their chitin maces. The Mantis Guard

are hand picked warriors and are often given the task of

defending the Elder Shaman or taking the lead in an attack on

a Gourd City. The leaders of the Mantis Guard fight with a

pair of Mantis Claws, which they wield with great skill.Supporting the Swamp Goblins from the air are the insects

known as Drone's. These giant, hornet-like creatures are

ridden by either a warrior or a Shaman. The warriors are

armed with a chitin sword and blowpipe while the Shaman

enhance the efforts of their allies or attack the enemy with

exploding spore bombs. The Sentinels are another insect used

by the Swamp Goblins. These enormous long-limbed

arachnoids scout the jungle, guarding boundaries and warning

of attack. When it comes to taking the attack to the enemy the

Swamp Goblins use the larger Swamp Fiends these massive

insectoid creatures can carry a number of Goblins on their

spiny backs.

When and how a Swamp Goblin tribe will attack is

decided by the Elde.r Shaman. These learned individuals

commune with the Spirit World and guide the tribe with the

wisdom they learn. there. The outcome of a battle is normally

decided by the wisdom or folly of these members of society

and it is not uncommon for an Elder Shaman to be executed if

his visions lead the tribe into disaster. Better that his essence

be returned to the Tree of Life than diminishing the eminence

of the tribe.

THW JADW HOUSW

OTTH'E~tWSThe Spiral City of the Jade House has stood upon the Ri.m of

the World for nearly a thousand. years. It began life as a.

fortified. outpost used by the Elves to maintain their presence

in the east. Protected on one side by the Palisade Mountains

and on the other by sheer cliffs and the jungles of the Fallen

Land it proved an ideal point from which to mount campaigns

into the eastern flank of the B1ackblood Empire. The Elves also

made forays into the Fallen Land and it was during these that

they first learned of the Yellow Lotus Flower. The news of a

new variety of the powerful Lotus Flower sent shock waves

through the Elven Houses who thought they knew

everything there was to know about this mystical bloom. There were many attempts to propagate the Yellow lotus but

they all ended in failure and it soon became apparent that only

the Swamp Goblins knew the secret of its cultivation.

The Elven Dukes began to court the Swamp Goblins

hoping to secure a constant supply of the Yellow Lotus. The

Swamp Goblins were surprised by the interest of the Elves for

they had thought the Yellow Lotus poisonous to anyone other

than the Children of the Gourd. But now it seemed the Elves

could also tolerate its potent effects and could therefore hear

the Song of the Fallen Land, which is one of the many gifts of

the Yellow Lotus ..The Elves began to trade with the Goblins

and to further strengthen their position they began lending

their strength to particular tribes in battle. This practicebecame ever more prevalent because a Goblin army enhanced

by the strength of the Elves was very effective indeed. In

return the Goblins provided the Elves with supplies of Yellow

Lotus and so their relationship was established.

The constant warring between the tribes would always

require the services of the Elves and the stocks of Yellow

Lotus would never be enough for the Elves because the Yellow

lotus turned out to be fa r more addictive than any of the other

varieties of Lotus Flower. The Yellow Lotus had another

quality that made it more valuable than ever. Unlike the others

it could be taken by ordinary Elves and not only by the elitist

lotus Eaters. Digesting the drug could prove fatal but it could

also enhance the ability of warriors and 60 many deemed. it

worth the risk.

Two hundred years ago when peace was declared between

the Elves and the Blackblood Empire the major Elven Houses

tried to assert themselves over the Elven Lords at the Jade

City, for the city had now grown considerably in size and

influence. They wanted the Yellow Lotus for themselves to

research and discover its full potential. The Jade City refused

to surrender its position to the Elven Dukes and the

remoteness of the city began to work in their favor. Relationsbetween the Blackbloods and the Elves began to deteriorate

once more and the Elven Lords at the Jade City found

themselves isolated from Elven society. Their numbers grew as

Elves from the other Houses flocked to the city, which

possessed an alluring reputation for independence and

decadence.

The Lords at the Jade City decided to formalize their city

and set themselves up as the Jade House. They did not concern

themselves with the wider world but were content to send

their warbands into the Fallen land as mercenaries in

exchange for supplies of Yellow Lotus. They fought

sporadically with the Blackbloods in the Palisade Mountains

but the worst of the wars in Chronopia passed them by. This

isolation has bred a hedonistic society that is too consumed

with luxury to worry about the troubles facing their fellow

Elves on the Islands of the Inner Sea. They consume the

Yellow Lotus and fight when they must, intoxicated and made

stronger by the power of this exotic flower that only grows in

the Fallen Land.

MOUNTED TROOPSThis section of the supplement expands the rules for Mounted

Troops in the Chronopia rules system. A Mounted Troop

consists of a rider and a mount, but as stated in the main rule

book, ifa Mounted Troop's Wounds are reduced to zero both

rider and mount are removed from playas a single model.

MOUNTED TROOPPRO l' Il' ES

The new Mounted Troop profile is split into separate stat

lines. One stat line shows the relevant stats for the rider, one

shows the relevant stats for the mount and another stat line

shows the stats for the rider and mount combined. Even

though the model still behaves as an Individual the stat lines

are kept largely separate to take account of the differentroles

played by the rider and mount. The combined stat line

illustrates the scats that apply to the model as a whole.

In the case of stats like CC and ST, both the rider and it.s

mount may have a value and the rules to cover the use of these

scats will be covered shortly. Here is an example profile for a

STRUCTUR'E: INDIVIDUAL

ACTIVATIO N AND AC TIO NS

For a Mounted Troop to perform most kinds of Action both

the rider and the mount must expend an Action. This accounts

for the fact that any Action requires a certain amount of time

to perform. For example, if the rider attempts to Spot a Hidden

model, both he and his mount will lose an Action while the

activity is being carried out. Mounted. Troops moving and

shooting at the same time (with the -6 penalty as stated in the

main rules) would also be covered, as both the rider and the

mount are spending an Action in the same period of time.

If a Mounted Troop is in Close Combat and the rider

makes a CC attack, then the mount may also make an attack,

using its own CC stat if it has one, as both Actions take place

simultaneously.

In the case of a rider with more Actions than his mount,

the rider may use any additional Actions at any point in the

model's TWTIfor any Action other than Move or Wa.it.

MOY'EM'ENT

Mounted Troops have the same capabilities and are subject to

the same restrictions as infantry models.

COMBAT

The rider and mount use their own relevant characteristics

when fighting, shooting or casting spells. For example, the

Sentinel attacks with a CC of 14 and would add his Strength

of 1 to any CC attack and not his mount's Strength of 2.

• Mounted Troops have a 360 degree firing arc.

• Mounted Troops attempting to Break Away from. Close

Combat use the higher Strength stat of either the rider or

mount.

ATTAC lC IN e; MOUNTE D TROOPS

Mounted Troops are attacked in the same way as infantry

models. An opponent can not choose to target the mount or

the rider independently as they are considered to be one

integral unit. You win notice in the new profile that the stats

for Wounds, Armor and DEF are included in the combined

stat line, which means they apply to the model as a whole.

MORAL'! ANDOTH'ER TE STS

Mounted Troops use the characteristics of the rider when

taking Morale tests. However, when making Strength tests in

the case of spells like Freeze, or when trying to break out of

the Troll's Net, for example, they would use the higher

Strength of either the rider or the mount.

This section of the supplement introduces rules for chariots to

the Chronopia rules system. Typically, a chariot consists of the

chariot, one or more creatures pulling it, a driver, and one or

more warriors riding in it.

CHARIOT PROFIL 'E SThe profile for a chariot consists of two or more separate stat

lines. The chariot stat line shows the combined characteristics

for the chariot, the driver and the creature or creatures pulling

it. Additional stat lines show the characteristics for any

warriors riding in the chariot. The point cost for any warriors

riding in the chariot is included in the cost of the chariot, as

shown in the chariot's stat line.

MOVEMWHT

Chariots may perform 1 tum of up to 90 degrees at the

beginning, or at the end of a Move Action. However, all turns

must be separated by an element of forward movement. It does

n t matter how' small this forward movement is but it

prevents the chariot from turning on the spot and simulates,

more accurately, the way they would move in real life.

Therefore you can not begin a Move Action with a turn if you

ended your last Move Action with a turn,

This restriction only applies to Move Actions made in the

same 'Game Turn'. Ifa chariot ends its current activation with

a turn, then the next time it is Activated it can begin its first

Move Action with a turn.

RANC;' ED COMBAT

Warriors riding i.nchariots have a 360 degree firing arc.

C lO S'E CO.MBAT

Warriors riding in chariots have a 360 degree combat arc, and

can. fight enemy models in base contact with any part of the

chariot model. If the creatures pulling the chariot have Close

Combat attacks they may only attack enemy models in base

contact with themselves, unless they have specific abilities

which allow them to de otherwise, Chariots may only

Countercharge enemies within the 180 degrees of their front

facing (see diagram 2).

ATTACKrNC ; CHARIOTS

When attacking a chariot the following rules apply:

First roll a d20.

• On a score of 1·10 the chariot is the target.

• On a score of 11·20 any warriors riding in the chariot are

the target.

• If there is more than orie ride I: in the chariot the attacking

player may choose which one to attack.

• Once decided, the target i attacked as normal, using the

target's profile.

• When trying to target a chariot with a spell such as Freeze

the caster needs LOS to any part of the chariot model.

MOHA l'E AND O TM 'E R TE STS

When making Morale or ether tests chariots use the highest

relevant characteristics of any warriors riding in them. If all

the riders in the chariot are killed then the chariot's

characteristics are used. In the case of Break Away tests, or

Strength tests against things such as the Freeze spell, then the

highest characteristic of either the chariot or riders is used.

The effects of any tests apply to the chariot as a whole.

TtV'ERSThis section of the supplement introduces rules for Flyers to

the Chronopia rules system. The term. Flyer refers to any

model that is capable of flight, Such models could be creatures

that can fly under their own power, such as Flying Dragon

Bane or passengers in a craft supported by sorcery or other

such means, The following rules apply to Flyers in general,

unless otherwise stated in a model's profile:

• Flyers can be either deployed on the ground or flying.

• Flyers are Activated and follow the same general rules as

any other model of the same type. For example, a MountedModel capable of flying follows the same general rules as

any other Mounted Model.

• Any Flyers armed with Missile Weapons can Move. and

Fire in the same way as a Mounted Model and with the

normal MW penalty of -6.

n.CHT"B4NDS

Height-bands are used to indicate the height of a Flyer above

the tabletop. Each Height-band represents a height of up to

three inches as shown in the following table. To indicate a

flyers height place a dice with its upper face showing the

current height band beside the model's base.

ftnR PR~rL,£SThe Profile for a Flyer is the same as for any other model of the

same type except that Flyers have two stars for Movement. The

first stat shows the model's Movement when on the ground,

while the second shows their Movement when in the air; For

example, a Flyer's Movement might be written as 3/6. If the

first stat for M.ovement is written as 0, then the model is not

capable of moving on the battlefield while on the ground.

COMMAND D IS TANC 'E

Warbands of Flyers maintain Command Distance if they are

within 4 inches and 1 Height-band of their Warband Leader.

MOV'EM"ENT

Flyers in the air Move in exactly the same way and have the

same restrictions as a model of the same type on the ground.

For example, a flying chariot would have the same restrictions

on turning as a chariot on the ground.

CH4HC.NC H'I'.CHT

Flyers need toexpend one Action to take off from the ground

or move vertically up one Height-band. Once per Turn Flyers

can vertically descend a single Height-band without expending

an Action, but must expend one Action to descend each

additional Height-band in the same Turn. For example a Flyer

would need to expend two Actions in order to descend three

Height-bands in one 'fum. To indicate a Flyer's height place a

Height-band counter by the model's base.

RANc;D COMBAT

In general Flyers shoot at and are shot at by other models in

the same way as. models on the ground would shoot at each

other. The main differences in ranged combat when Flyers are

involved are as follows:

• When measuring the range to the target simply measure

the horizontal range to the model and add 3 inches for each

Height-band between the 'Firing model and the target.

• When trying to determine Line of Sight to or from a Flyer,

use your ruler to measure the position of the model as

represented by the model's height then judge ifyou can see

the target from that position.• Directly Placed Template Weapons and spells can not be

targeted at Flyers outside the attacker's Height-band.

• Ranged Template Weapons and spells that are targeted at

Flyers only affect the target model and models in the same

Height-band as the target model. Deviating templates deviate

horizontally in the same Height-band, never vertically.

• Flyers in the air and models firing at Flyers in the air are

not subject to the rules for Dead Ground as detailed later

in this supplement.

C1.0S'E COMBAT

Flyers may Charge, be Charged, or Countercharge other

models at any height as long as both the charger and the target

are in the same Height-band. If Flyers wish to Charge or

Countercharge ground based models on elevated Terrain or

vice versa simply measure the height of the Terrain above the

tabletop and divide by three to determine the height of the

Terrain. in Height-bands.

DrYI: ATTACkS

Flyers may make Dive attacks on models below them. Dive

attacks are Charges with added advantages for impetus and

attacking from above your victim.

To make a Dive Attack the Flyer must start the attack from

the Height-band above the target model, and must be within

Charge distance of its target as measured horizontally, Use the

following procedure:

• The model making the Dive attack declares the attack.

• The Diving model descends to the target model's Height-

band expending an Action if required (see the rules for

'Changing Height').

• TI1e Diving model then Charges the target model as normal.

Models making a Dive attack gain a bonus of + 1 CC and + 1Dam in addition to the usual bonuses for Charging. Models

Countercharging a model making a Dive attack suffer a penalty

to their bonuses of -1CC and -1Dam.

B R:E AK .N (f AWAY

A Flyer wishing to Break Away from Close Combat does not

need to make a roll in order to Break Away even if an enemy

model wishes to prevent it. The Flyer need only expend 1

Action and can then Move away.

D AMA(f'N (f "H YE RS

Flyers suffer Damage jus t as any other model of the same type

would on the ground. Unless otherwise stated if a Flyer is

reduced to a Wounds whilst in the air simply remove the

model from the tabletop as you would any other model.

SPE lLS, TE RRAIN AND W 'EATH 'fR

Certain spells, Terrain and weather conditions affect Flyers in a

different way than other models. The following guidelines will

give you a good idea. as to how to handle effects of this nature.

Rough and Impassable Terrain have no effect on Flyers in

the air as they simply fly over obstructions, bushes, walls, marshes and the like. However, Flyers may need to change

Height-bands in order to pass over high obstacles or Terrain

features.

Weather effects such as the Sandstorm and Desert 'Twister

in the 'Land of Two Rivers' and the Ice Storm in the 'Sons of

Krenos' Chronopia supplements affect an Height-bands from

the ground up, so a Flyer would be affected no matter how

high up it was.

Spell effects that can only be used on the ground such as

Chasm, Lava Pool and Savage Roots have no effect on Flyers in

the air. The following examples also affect Flyers in slightly

different ways.

T',",PU1: - When the position of Flyers is affected by aTempest they deviate in the same Height-band only.

PUlliN - flying models that are Petrified fall to the ground

directly below them taking Damage as described in the section

on 'Jumping and Failing'. Don't forget they have Armor 30

when hitting the ground.

CAll Of 'eM! DRAGON - The mist affects a n Height-bands.

CLIMB' 'NC;There are many occasions when models on the tabletop might

want to climb up or down vertical Terrain features. In the

main Chronopia rules it states that models may climb over

linear Terrain features, so long as the feature is smaller than

the modelin height, Negotiating Terrain like this requires the

model to expend one Action.

The following rules introduce climbing to the Chronopia

rules system and allow models to attempt to climb Terrain

features that are taller than the model in question, such as

cliffs, walls and even large trees.

• AU creatures of a basically humanoid character may

attempt to climb. If players can't agree on whether or not

a creature would be able to climb a given piece of Terrain,

they should simply roll a d20 with the decision going in

the winner's favor.

• Models move at 1 inch per Action when climbing.

• Once climbing, models must spend all their available

Actions climbing, and can do nothing else until they reach

a flat surface they can stand on. Combat and shooting etc.

are impossible while climbing.

• Climbing models must make a Climbing Roll to see if they

fall, Roll 1 dlO. On a score of 16-20 the model falls. See the

section on 'Jumping and Falling' to calculate any Damage. This Climbing Roll is made for the climb they are

attempting in that Turn and not for each Action spent

climbing, regardless of whether the model is climbing up or

down. If the model fails its Climbing Roll and falls, the

Damage is calculated from the highest point of the climb he

is attempting.

For example: A model with 3 Actions attempts a climb of 6

inches. If the model is climbing up the cliff he could climb 3

inches high in one Tum. He must now make a Climbing Roll

and if he fails he would take the Damage for a fall of 3 inches.

In his next Turn he could climb to a height of 6 inches, so if

he fails his Climbing Roll for this part of the climb he would

take the Damage for a fall of 6 inches. If the same model were climbing down. the cliff the situation

would be reversed. If he failed his roll on the first part of the

climb he would take the Damage for a fall of 6 inches, and if he

failed on the second part of the climb he would take the Damage

for a fall of 3 inches. If a model is hit while climbing, or

successfully targeted by an enemy spell it must make a Climbing

Roll to see if it falls regardless of whether it took any Damage.

JUMPING AND TALL .NGIf a model jumps or falls from an elevated piece of Terrain they

are likely to be injured by the fall, and the greater the height of

the fall the greater the risk of injury. Models might fall while

attempting to climb the wall of a tower or be pushed. off a ledge

by a spell like Wind Blast. Equally they might decide to jump

from a cliff to escape an enemy or to fall on an unsuspecting

foe.

Ifa model wants to jump from a height of 6 inches or over,

they must make a successful Leadership Test to see if they have

the nerve to jump.

Whether jumping or falling they must refer to the follow-

ing table and make an Armor Roll to see if they take a

Wound or Wounds from the fall. Simply measure the dis-

tance that the model has fallen and make the Annor Roll

against the corresponding Damage.

placed on the table it then behaves as any other model and can be

targeted just like any other model for the rest of the game.

S 'EHS'E PR"ES'l 'NC'E:

Models with this Special Ability are aware of all models on the

tabletop. They do not see by conventional means and therefore

their vision is not blocked by ordinary things. They can

essentially 'see through' Terrain and they are automatically

aware of Hidden models. For the purpose of LOS, models with

this ability have LOS to all models on the tabletop. This does

not mean they would be able to shoot through intervening

Terrain but it does mean they would be affected by spells or

standards such as the Dark Tusk Legion Standard, as this

causes Fear to all enemy Units within 6 inches and LOS.

As mentioned, models can not Hide from a model with the

Sense Presence Special Ability. However, because they do not

see the world in the same way as other models, they can not

use their ability to expose Hidden models to other members of

their anny. Such models would need to make a Spot roll as

normal. This ability is essentially the same as that noted in the

Special Rules fOI"the Dark Eyes of the Devout and the Stygian

- Sisters ofTiamat.

We have noticed however, that in some circumstances Missile

Weapon Warbands tend to . dominate the field, especially in

games where players may net have access to . the wealth of

Terrain that we enjoy here at the studio, To. cater for such

people, and fer these of you who prefer a mere open game

where the savagery of Close Combat plays a greater part, we

have developed the following new rules fer shooting. You may

well like the way the system. plays at the moment and you may

have developed tactics and battlefield layouts that suit the way

you like to play, and that's great.

We have found however, that when using these improvedsheeting rules a mere balanced and exciting game results,

When using the new sheeting rules make sure you and your

opponent agree beforehand. The new rules impose restrictions

on sheeting but also. promote a more varied use of the rules as

Missile Weapon troops are now mere inclined to . Aim and

then Fire rather than take two. shots with less chance of

hitting. The new optional rules are as follows:

• Missile Weapon Units may only Fire once a Tum.

Missile Weapon Units may not go.on Wait if they have

Fired in the same Tum.

ClIMATE AND TERRAINLarge areas of the jungle are submerged in stagnant water and

much of what passes for solid ground is treacherous with

pockets of slimy mud. In some places there are immense pools

of still water or sluggish rivers bridged only by huge water

lilies, and in others raised areas of land provide a relatively

solid footing and a firm bed fer strange animal and plant life.

The tall trees festooned with vines and creepers, tangled

intertwining roots and dense lush undergrowth make some

parts of the jungle almost impenetrable but in other areas there

is a much sparser coverage of trees and vegetation and even

large creatures can move around relatively easily. Visibility isoften very poor due to trees, vegetation and the mists and

vapors that rise from the swamp.

The following rules cover climate, Terrain effects and some

of the aggressive plants and animals that reside in . the jun-

gles and swamps of the Fallen Land. Using them will allow

you to fight interesting battles with a unique flavor, You

will have to adapt your tactics to take advantage of the Ter-

rain, the dangerous flora and fauna. and the reduced visibil-

ity common in the depths of the jungle.

Page 48: Fallen Land

You can depict areas of dense jungle, swamp or water by

cutting an irregular shape out of a piece of cloth or felt and

placing it 0.0 the table. Areas of any size can be depicted in this

way, from small patches a few inches across to large areas that

take up much ofthe tabletop. Ifyou wish to depict a patch of

trees or jungle you could use a green colored materialand place

individual model trees on the cloth. A brown colored material

with small bushes and the odd small tree model dotted around

could represent swamp. A dark biue/black material perhaps

with the addition of floating lily pads and plants can represent

pools of water.

JUN~t'E J"~HTrNC;-We suggest that ifyou wish to playa game that involves jungle

and swamp Terrain and effects, you choose one of the

following ways to decide how the creatures, Terrain and

climate of the Fallen Land will affect your game.

TIf 'E ' OUTER nUNClS O J ' " T K ' E JUNCL'ESAND SWAMP

Set up the table as normal for your game. Place patches of

same effect as that described in the Chronopia rules, for

Random jungle and swamp hazards as described shortly

can only be played in areas of the tabletop depicted as being

jungle, swamp or pools etc. In all other respects the game

should be played as normal.

THI H'£ART O F TH'E JUN~L'E

For battles in the heart of the jungle you should assume that

the entire tabletop is covered with swamp and. vegetation. To

simulate this in game terms illS for all troops is reduced to 18

to obstructing vegetation and mists. In addition to this you

should place patches of swamp and jungle around on the

tabletop. These depict much denser areas of swamp, jungle etc.

and will have the same effect as that described in the

Chronopia rules, for example models without the jungle

Warrior Special Ability will have their Move halved when

moving through them. You might want to place some

individual trees and bushes here and there across the tabletop

to give the effect that the entire tabletop is covered in jungle.

Random jungle and swamp hazards as described shortly

RANDOM JUN(;t'E AND SW AM P H AURD S

SPEARMAN

5VEARMWNIn times of need or when the Gourd Cities are under threat the entire population of

a Swamp Goblin tribe take up spears and shields as they arm themselves for war. It

is also common for small war parties of Spearmen to raid neighboring tribes for food

or the larvae of the great insectoid beasts that all Swamp Goblin tribes raise and trainas mounts and beasts of war:

The Spearmen are drawn. from the vast bulk of gourd tenders and craftsmen, and

every adult male, Goblin is expected to fight for the security of the tribe, Young

Goblins are eager to prove themselves in battle as this improves their standing when

competing for a mate. The Spearmen often fight in large groups relying on force of

numbers to subdue the enemy. Although small in stature Swamp Goblins have a

reputation. for courage and ferocity, especially when ftgbting to protect their homes

and people.Waibands of Spearmen often benefit from the support of Novice

Shamans who join the Warband hoping to elevate their standing by using their

knowledge and win victory for the tribe.

Strong bonds exist between the members of particular Warbands because they

MUNTERSApart from providing much of the food for the tribe the Hunters fu1fill other roles

in Swamp Goblin society. The Hunters are the ones who seek out the lairs and nests

of wild insectoid creatures from which eggs and larvae are taken. They also hunt

down and capture the ferocious male Swamp Fiends, needed for the breeding of a

new brood. A Hunter who manages to break a.wild Swamp Fiend enjoys the respect

and envy of his fellow Hunters .•while the tribe gains another powerful beast thatacts according to their will. .

A Hunter's most valuable qualities are not martial skills but those of patience and

jungle-craft. Swamp Goblin Hunters spend much of their time far away from the

security and comfort of the tribe in remote and inaccessible areas of the jungle. Theyare as comfortable with the nature of the jungle as any could hope to be , moving

through swamps and dense undergrowth with a skill that enables them to

outmaneuver the enemy or sneak into the heart of a Swamp Stalk___erest.

Swamp Goblin Hunters work inteams to bring down large creatures and make the

most of their skills, which often gives them the edge in a world full of enemies that

are often many times larger than themselves ..There are two main groups of Hunters;

the Blowpipers and the Web lvUsters and each have their own specialties.

Swamp Goblins are in the belief that

they are as much a part of the Fallen

Land as any plant or animal in

the jungle. The most striking

example of this coexistence can be

seen in the relationship 'between

the Swamp Goblins and the Yellow

Lotus flower. The Yellow Lotus and the

Swamp Goblins are effectively

symbiotic, the Yellow Lotus only growsin the areas of the jungle where the

Goblins dwell. The Goblins use the

poisons and even for communing with

Swamp Goblins partake of the Yello,",

Lotus for only by do._ingo can they hear

the Song of the Fallen Land. And theevidence of their reliance on this

powerful drug can be seen in their

yellow eyes which are saturated with

the essence of this most exotic of

f lcwers,

Only the Shamans know the secret of

preparing the Yellow Lotus for its many

uses and,as such they enjoy a status high

above any other in the tribe, A powerful

Shaman can do much to raise the

standing of a tribe and all tribes hope

that their Elder Shaman might one day

emerge from the Spirit World ahead ofall other contenders to take his place at

the Tree of life.

The Militia forms an important part of

the military in the Jade House of the

Elves because the society is more

inclined to indulgence than any of the

other Houses. Thus m.any of the citizens

are required to serve in tbe Militia as

part of their debt to the House that has

given them so much. Elven Lords

within the city often amass large forces

of Militia to strengthen their position

when. jostling for power in the Jade

City, In addition to this an Elven Lordwith a large number of Militia in his

service has considerable bargaining

power with the Swamp Goblin Tribes

for the Militia are easily replaced and

therefore ideal for committing to the

incessant skirmishes between the

Goblin Tribes. This military aid is repaid

with supplies of the specially prepared

Lotus Flower which is such an integral

part of society in the Jade City ..

The Militia is also used for the defenseof the city and the outlying towers on

the Rim of the World. And should these

come under threat then the Elven Lords

will put aside their differences in a brief

show of unity that dissipates the

moment the threat has disappeared,

DRAC;ONBAN~ RJD'ERSDragonbane have been. a part ofElven Armies for many centuries. These powerful

beasts are naturally fierce and the Elves have harnessed their aggression and

strength. The secrets of their breeding and training are still wreathed inmystery but

all the Spiral Cities are rich in deep caverns and. lofty pinnacles which are perfect for

nurturing the increasingly important Dragonbane,

The Dragonbane Scouts and Warkillers area common sight on the battlefields of

Chronopia. The Flying Dragonbane are less common but are sighted with increasing

frequency. And there are yet other breeds of Dragonbane that remain the source of

secret and rumor.

The right to become a Dragonbane Rider is restricted to the Elven nobility forwhom such a mount brings great prestige. The wingless Dragonbane are highly

prized and often given as gifts to lords and nobles of the great Houses. The heritage

of Flying Dragonbane is even more elitist. Riding these awesome beasts requires

great skill and special training, the knowledge which is handed down through

particular families which hold the hereditary title of Skyrider.

DRAC;ONBAN'E SCOUTSThe Scouts are young Elven nobles training in the arts of war and command.

Amongst other things they are used to patrol borders and observe enemy troop

movements and use this knowledge to advise their superiors on strategy and tactics.

They rarely get into mass combat as they prefer to keep some distance from the

enemy and use their archery skills as they pick off the enemy. firing from the saddle

The Standard has been treated with extracts from the Yellow

Lotus Flower that was specially prepared by the Lotus-Eaters.

The air around the Standard shimmers with energy and

vitality, sharpening the reflexes of warriors in the Warband

and giving them a bonus to their DEF of ,1.

STANDARD OF' V'TALrTVCOST 16

An incense burner sits at the top of this standard. and the

incense is impregnated with Yellow Lotus. The incense is. lit

when. the standard is raised and the smoke from the burner is

highly invigorating. All members of the Warband receive a

bonus of + 1 to ST.

'El.XIR 01' V1:ttOW tOTUSAll members of Jade House society use the Yellow lotus

flower. They incorprate it into their food and wine. They

inhale the. vapors from pipes and steaming bowls scented with

oils. Poorer families use it sparingly for it is highlypmed and

expensive but the nobility of the Jade House indulge

themselves to the f u l J ! . They are now slaves to the Yeilow lotus

and cannot live without regular consumption. Thus the fate of

the. Jade House is now inextricably linked to that of the

Swamp Goblins and the Fallen Land.

In war the retinues of the wealthier noblemen carry vials ofhighly concentrated Yellow Lotus Elixir, which IS usually only

consumed in times of great need. The effect of the Elixir can

vary considerably and while it can empower a warrior to great

feats on the battlefield it can also deliver a.quick and agcnizing

death.

All Elven Units in the Jade, House army except the Mili-

tiamen can carry Ellixir with them onto the hattlefi.eld but

due to the rarity of the substance, you may only have one

Unit with the Elixir for every two you have without.

When equipping a Unit with the Elixir it must be bought

for every member in the Unit, including any mounts, at a

cost of 5 points per member.

The Elixir may only be used once per battle. All members ofthe Unit drink their Elixir at the. start of the Unit's Turn

before any of them have used any Actions and. the effects last

until the end of the Unit's Turn, The Elixir doesn't cost anAction. to use, simply declare that the members of the Unit are

going to use :it and roll once on the following table. All themembers of the Unit suffer the same effect. Lotus-Eaters

suffer/gain the. effects of both the columns and. other models

get the effect from the left column only.
