Eagle Scouts Benjamin F. Selvey and Jacob A. McQuistion recently earned their rank of Eagle Scout and were awarded this achievement at the Court of Honor at St. Ann’s Church Bishop Hoffman Hall. Selvey is the son of Norm and Cathy Selvey. He is currently a senior at SJCC and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. His Eagle Scout community service project was for Our Lady of the Pines Retreat Center. He led the installation of a concrete sidewalk/walkway under the direction of Mr. Dick Celek. This walk-way connects the Hermitage Cabins to the parking lot and the other buildings on the premises. With the help of other scouts, family and friends, the project accumulated 146 volunteer hours of time to complete. Many area businessmen donated to this project for its completion. After graduation, he plans to attend college and pursue an engineering degree.

McQuistion is the son of Brian and Peggy McQuistion. He is currently a senior at SJCC. His Eagle Scout community service project consisted of the installation of a disc golf course at Walsh Park in Fremont. He enlisted the help and resources of family, fellow scouts, the City of Fremont and designer Bill Bigalow. The nine-hole course includes some challenging shots, as well as a practice area. The project took approximately 18 months to complete with a re-corded 188 hours of work involved. After graduating from high school, he plans to attend college and major in graphic design.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Catholic Schools: In my office is a school locker that was decorated with hundreds of “old” yearbook pictures of teachers and students. Some are in black and white, some are in color, some include priests and nuns and some include volunteers and other support staff. I bought it at one of the early Catholic Schools auctions because it gave me a sense of pride, connection and hope for those kids who would be our future Streaks and enter the hallways of knowledge at SJCC. We are connected to those who came before and those yet to come. Those of you who have already passed through the hallways of our Catholic

schools and are now entrenched in very busy lives – with families, work, church and other service activities – appreciate how your Catholic school experience has helped shape who you are today. You know our BHCS students from preschool through high school deserve a chance to experi-ence an even better opportunity. Through our development efforts, we now reach out to all of you. We appreciate those who have already “paid it forward” and say “thank you from the heart”. For those of you who have wondered where to best serve the next generation of SJCC gradu-ates, your unique method of “paying it forward” may be by a credit card donation, or writing a check or picking up the phone and calling or sending an email asking for more information. We have set a goal of $250,000 for this year’s annual fund. We know it will be achieved when everyone gives. We know it will be achieved when everyone “invests” back so we can move forward. You make a difference. Go make a difference. Go make a difference in our world. Please give to our fund, to our children and help us take this next generation to even greater heights than any of us could have imagined “back in the day”. God bless you and thank you!

Tim Cullen

ThankYou!

Hometown HeroKatie Magnuson ‘16 How would it feel to be mostly paralyzed? Parker Inks, a freshman at St. Joseph Central Catholic, has been living this way nearly all of his life. Parker devel-oped a form of muscular dystrophy when he was about six months old. This genetic disease makes the muscles weak and people with it generally have a limited range of mobility, ultimately needing wheelchairs in order to get around. However, despite the complications asso-ciated with his condition, Parker does not allow adver-sity to get the best of him. Instead, he seeks to inspire and help others to be confident and look on the bright side of life. Since his arrival at SJCC, Parker has had to adapt to high school life like everyone else, but with the added pressures of a genetic condition. However, when asked about the difficulties of high school life and how he’s met the challenges, he never once mentioned or complained about having to navigate a wheel-chair through the halls or take the elevator to move from one floor to the next. Instead, he reflected on the posi-tivity that seems to surround him wherever he goes. According to Parker, he has been able to make the transition from middle school to high school well be-cause he is familiar with nearly the entire student body and receives an immense amount of encouragement from those around him. His favorite subjects are Art I and American History-- which he is able to take as a fresh-man by special request-- and although he sees the work as a bit more difficult, it does not seem to bother him in the least. In fact, Parker describes the most difficult aspect of high school is trying to find time to be with his friends. In addition to setting a good example for his peers, Parker also seeks to empower those with similar condi-tions as well as their families. In 2008 the Inks family, and a few others, decided to establish Parker’s Purpose, an organization dedicated to easing the financial burden faced by the families of those with life-altering conditions. The organization was formed because of the Inks family’s desire to help others as their community had helped them when Parker was ill and medical expenses were a burden. Since its creation, Parker’s Purpose has donated over $100,000 to hundreds of families in need. Through this charity, Parker has been able to sow hope in the hearts of others like him and continues to be an inspiration to all who know him. Overall, Parker is a real go-getter. He has taken what others may view as setbacks and used them to prove that, with a lot of hard work and a little faith, anything is possible. All his life, Parker has had a motto: “Don’t let what you can’t do interfere with what you can do.” With this in mind, it is easy to stop focusing on shortcomings and use one’s strengths to help others. Parker’s wit and great capacity to love and teach others to love make his presence in our school a true blessing. We are very happy to have him with us.

Mrs. Jody Twining’s 8th Grade Science Topics class at SJCC is participating in the Lexus/Scholastic EcoChal-lenge for a chance to win $10,000! They prepared their project around invasive species in the Great Lakes and they presented it to the 4th and 8th grades at the St. Joseph Campus. The class presented a puppet show, a slideshow and a scavenger hunt with prizes! The class researched several different invasive species, including the Round Goby, Asian Carp and Sea Lam-prey. They also researched the different problems these species pose for Lake Erie. This educational presentation ap-plies to everyone in the community since the invasive fish and plants that are damaging Lake Erie affect us all. Please remember to do your part by not releasing pets into the wild, returning animals and plants to the areas you find them in, and being a good boating citizen! A big Thank You goes out to the 4th and 8th Grade teachers for allowing us to present to your classes and to Mrs. Krupp for allowing us to put up posters throughout the building! The class looks forward to finding out if they win!

Friday, August 23, was a great day for golf as SJCC alumni and friends participated in the 7th annual Alumni and Friends/CEDF Golf Outing. The Fremont Country Club hosted the event with 22 teams competing. Over $5,800 was raised and will be split between the Alumni and Friends Association and CEDF. Congratulations to the winning team of John Faist, Dick Faist, Red Haslinger and John Lauer! We would like to thank the golf committee members Rick Frank, John Lauer, Al O’Neal and Al Schabel for the time and expertise in planning the outing, and to the sponsors listed below.

2013-2014 Annual Fund CampaignIt’s time to say “YES”

We are in our fourth year as a consolidated Catholic school system and we are moving forward. No more looking back in the rear view mirror – we now celebrate our present and build our future:

We have increased the number of “new” students to our school system. We have a budget that is balanced and an enrollment that is stable. We have brought in state scholarship money for parents of students with special needs and also students on a Kindergar- ten voucher based on income needs. This money covers the total tuition for each designated student and the services they require. We have Smartboard and iPad technology throughout each Campus location. We have continued to reach service hour and fundraising goals set for students. We have safe, clean and disciplined schools.

Your 2013-2014 annual fund appeal will be arriving in the mail soon. We need a big push over the next two years – we need a major “re-commitment” to our schools. We have set a goal of $250,000 for this year and for next year for the Annual Fund. This amount will secure solid footing for our funding and allow us to keep new initiatives going along with keeping tuition at a reasonable cost for our families. We believe the next two years will help us turn the corner toward an aim-line of growth, creativity and long-standing viability. We have hundreds of Alumni and Friends and are asking each to join in this major push to help us reach our goal. If only 250 each donate a thousand dollars we will reach it. If only 500 would each donate five hundred dollars, we will reach it. These monies will impact our youngest Streaks all the way through our SJCC students as we maintain the only PreK through 12 Catholic school system in Sandusky County.

Please read through the information, prayerfully consider a first-time or continued donation and let us know if you have any questions or need more information. The halls of SJCC are vibrant and continue to echo the core values we all benefitted from. Let’s roll up our sleeves and together make this two-year push successful.

Drivers help patients on Road to Recoveryreprinted with permission from Sandusky Register by Jessica Cuffman

Just to get to appointments for treatment, it takes time and energy. Fremont resident John Lauer, now retired, made seemingly countless trips, driving his wife to the Cleveland Clinic 15 years ago for bone marrow transplants and stem cell treatments when she was fighting the disease. That’s why he’s a volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s newly implemented program called Road to Recovery, which connects cancer pa-tients with a free ride and volunteer drivers for treatment and doctor’s ap-pointments. “I’m active in the cancer society. I lost a brother and my wife is a cancer survivor. I’ve been in charge of Relay for Life a couple of times,” Lauer said. Sandusky and Seneca counties recenty launched the program, already avail-able in many other Ohio counties, said Deborah Niese, health initiatives rep-resentative for ACS. “The best treatment in the world is useless if you can’t get there,” she said. About 25 drivers have already volunteered to help with the program. Lauer said once they verify your insurance, license and background, it just takes a few hours to get ready to be a volunteer. A volunteer coordinator arranges the rides as they receive requests for transport. Lauer is set to give his first ride next week from Bellevue to Columbus. “It’s a good cause, and cancer affects about every family, if not every family,” Lauer added.
