LAMARHIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Savages eye big seasonBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

The Lamar High School footballteam enjoyed another successfulseason in the Tri-Peaks League, but the postseason was not kind tothe Savages.

After opening the season withtwo losses to Burlington (28-20)and Florence (12-6 in overtime),the Savages ran off a string of eightvictories over Ellicott, La Junta,Monte Vista, St. Mary’s, DoloresHuerta, Colorado Springs Chris-tian, Trinidad, and ManitouSprings.

But in preliminaries of the Class2A state playoffs, Lamar fell to theHoly Family Tigers, 39-15, to finishthe season with an 8-3 record.

Heavy losses on both the offen-sive and defensive lines have theLamar coaching staff looking hardat newcomers vying for those spotsin hopes of returning to the play-offs.

Head coach Jason Tice and hisseven assistant coaches welcomedaround 70 plus players for thisyear’s team.

The Savages return a wealth ofskill people to build around in theiropen pro-set formations.

The coaching staff has in-stalled Branson Jennings, a6-2, 205 junior at thequarterback position,while Cory Fasiot-to, a 6-2, 195senior, was

moved to tight end.Bruising fullback Emilio Carrillo

(5-9, 205) returns for his senior sea-son, while the tailback spot will bemanned by elusive Erik Niesch-burg, a 5-10, 170 junior. Senior Dar-rian Adame, a 5-10, 150 senior, willplay the sweeper position.

Fassiotto will share duty at tightend with Colby Turner, a 5-10, 170senior. Rotating at wide receiverwill be Kyle Monson, 5-18, 140 sen-ior and Isiah Martinez, 6-0, 145 jun-ior.

The question for Lamar will bethe offensive line, where only Mi-chael Niedens (6-0, 250 senior) andTony Herrera (6-1, 275 junior) re-turn as starters.

Neidens has been moved to cen-ter and Herrera is at quick sideguard.

Filling the other positions on theline will be Josh Viar, a 5-10, 190senior, at strong side guard; JoseRodriguez, a 5-10, 190 senior, atstrong stide tackle, and Kaden Pier-son, a 6-3, 205 sophomore at quickside tackle. Remington Stocking, a5-5, 160 senior, will also contributeon the front line.

The offense will feature pro sets, two back looks, and Tice’s tradi-

tional man in motion.Tice and his stafffeel like they canthrow the ballmuch more effec-tively this year aswell.

Defensively, the team islooking at thesame problem

in that they must shore up their de-fensive front.

Defensive coordinator AustinWertz may change up the defen-sive look this year, as the Savageslook strong at the linebacker spots.Returning league MVP and leadingtackler Emilio Carrillo will lead theway, along with Viar, a starter ayear ago. The duo will be joined byZeb Harvey (5-10, 150 junior) andJamin Tate (5-7, 145 sophomore).

Gabe Beard (6-0, 180 junior) andCory Fasiotto will play at defensiveends.

The defensive tackle positionswill be shared by Hererra, Niedens,Tyler Nielson (5-10, 180 junior) andJonathan Ortiz, 5-10, 195 sopho-more).

The defensive backfield looksstrong and will be led by leagueMVP Ricky Rodriquez (5-9, 170senior) at cornerback. DiminutiveMike Sandoval, a 5-4, 135 senior, will join Rodriquez at cornerback.Derrick Adame (5-8, 135 junior)will be the starter at free safety

The specialty teams, which get ahard look every practice, will bepaced by Tylor Jara, last year’spunter and kick off man.

Returning punts and kick offswill be Sandoval and Rodriquez.“Even though it is early, this is a re-ally fun team to coach,” said Ticke“They like to practice and workhard every day. They are a reallygood kids to be around.“Looking atthe Tri-Peaks League, coach Ticesaid, “Florence is the favorite untilsome one beats them. But I’d liketo think we are the best team in theleague.”

In the Denver Post Class 2A pre-season football three teams fromthe Tri-Peaks League are ranked.

The state poll reads as follows: 1.Faith Christian, 2. Kent Denver: 3.Brush; 4. Aspen; 5. Platte Canyon;6. Bayfield; 7. Florence; 8. Olathe;9. Lamar; 10. Colorado SpringsChristian.

LAMARPREP SOFTBALL

Softball team eyes new seasonBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

The Lamar High Schoolgirls softball team is comingoff a 13-8 season a year ago.

Lamar was one of fourteams that received an at largebid to play in the Class 3Astate tournament. As the No.16 seed the Lady Savagesdidn’t catch much of a breakas they faced No. 1 seed andeventual state champion Erieand lost 14-4.

Craig Forney heads into hissecond year as the helm.

He said last year was alearning experience for himand now with one season un-der his belt his expectationsare higher.

“Just getting to know theplayers was new for me andthank goodness for my assist-ant coaches,” he said. “It tookus a while to really mesh as ateam. Early in the season, westruggled for a bit and we hadsome tough games. But Ithought we were playing ourbest softball at the end of theyear and that’s all you can askfor as a coach.”

This season, Forney has 35players out for the team.

“Having the numbers is agood problem to have,” hesaid. “But it’s hard to get agood evaluation of all of theplayers.”

Forney lost the services ofhis top two pitchers from lastyear. He said another area ofconcern will be behind theplate where he also lost his toptwo catchers.

Looking to pick up the slack

in the pitching circle will besophomore Katie Cramptonand senior Whitney Crown.

“I think our pitching willdefinitely be a strength thisyear,” said Forney. “We returnKatie and she worked hardover the summer and looksstronger. Whitney can alsothrow and I have some othergirls who can come in. We’llbe fine pitching wise.”

Forney will be counting onsome young players to fill thevoid at catcher. Candidates forthe job are junior Felicity Per-ales, and sophomores VanessaGalindo and Veronica Jime-nez.

“The position of main con-cern is catcher,” he said. “I’mtrying to find that every daycatcher because it’s such a vi-tal position.”

The infield should be solidwith several players return-ing but Forney explainedthey will see duty at differ-ent positions.

Senior Madison Do-renkamp will play atfirst base while fresh-man Abbie Reed movesin at second base. Sen-ior Tessa Peacock willmake the move from thirdbase to shortstop while seniorTanner Campbell will play thehot corner at third base. Alsoseeing work in the infield willbe senior Tanisha Kisamore.

In the outfield, WhitneyCrown will move from rightfield to center field. Battlingfor the position in right fieldwill be seniors Kaitlin Ybarraand Ashley Lawrence.

Playing left field will be an-other freshman prospect in

Chelsea Vallejos. SophomoreAbigail Cruz from Wiley isalso tabbed to see duty in theoutfield.

Looking ahead to this sea-son, Forney said, “You alwaysset your goals higher everyyear. This year, we definitelywant to finish higher in theleague and I think we can. Iwant to see us be more consis-tent. I really think we returnsome girls who know thegame.”

The Lady Sav-ages will com-pete in Dis-trict 2 forthe

postsea-son with the toptwo teams advancing tothe 3A state tournament.

The seven teeams in Dis-trict 2 include Lamar, Clas-sical Academy, DoloresHuerta, Florence, La Junta,Rocky Ford, and St. Mary’s.

Lamar boys make jump to varsityBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

It will be the beginning of anew era for the Lamar HighSchool boys’ soccer team.

After two successful sea-sons at the junior varsity level, the Savages will make the bigjump to the varsity level.

The Savages will be underthe direction of new headcoach Miguel Roman after thedeparture of former headcoach James Rooks.

Roman isn’t new to the pro-gram as he served as an assist-ant coach the last two years.

“I’m very excited and hope-fully we can put a pretty goodteam on the field,” said Ro-man. “I learned a lot fromJames but I also have a lot ofexperience. I’ve played soccersince I was five years old. Ihave a pretty good knowledgeof the game.”

One of the biggest thingsRoman said he learned fromRooks is interacting with theplayers.

“That plays a big part,” saidRoman. “If the kids don’t haveany respect for you then you

won’t succeed. I want the kidsto have fun and learn thegame. That’s what soccer is allabout.”

Roman has over 30 playerson the roster which includes agood base of seniors.“We areyoung, but I feel we have a lot

of talent,” he said. “If the kidsare willing to learn and playwith intensity, we’ll be fine.”

“We lost some key seniorslast year,” added Roman. “Butwe’ve got some players readyto step in and do their best.”

Players to watch at goal-

LAMARPREP CROSS COUNTRY

Changing of the guardBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

The Lamar High Schoolgirls and boys cross countryteams have been hitting thecourse in stride as they pre-pare for the 2010 season.

Joe Harbert and Erik Mel-goza head into their third sea-son as the respective coachesfor the girls’ and boys’ teams.

Harbert graduated two sen-iors from last year’s team andcurrently has 10 girls out.

He said a welcome additionto this year’s team is junior Su-sie Lira, who will be looking tofill the shoes of her sister An-tonia who was one of the for-mer top runners for the LadySavages.

“Susie is a huge welcomeaddition to our team after play-ing softball last year,” saidHarbert. “Her sister Antoniawent to state for us last year.Susie looks great right andworking hard.”

Another top prospect in herfirst year out for cross countryis Kim States, a senior fromWiley.

“Kim is very personable andher work ethic is great. We’rehappy to have her on theteam.

Also returning from lastyear is junior Sydney Crist, who Harbert said is a greatcompetitor and works veryhard.

From there, Harbert saidthe rest of the field is close be-hind to fill the fourth varsityspot on the team.

The rest of the roster for thegirls’ team will include seniorsNaerissa Strossner and Gio-vanna Vargas Soto; junior Dan-iela Villasenor ; and sopho-mores Maribel Duque,MyKinthia Ebron, MonicaGaitonde, and Amy Jaime.

“I feel lucky and fortunate tobe the coach,” said Harbert. “Ihave a great bunch of kids andthey’re all willing to work hardand have good attitudes. Theystrive to please and what morecould you ask for. I really ex-pect good things from thisteam.”

Melgoza has 11 out for thisyear’s boy’s team.

He will look to fill the shoesof two of his top runners JoshJaime and Jose Rueda, whograduated.

“We lost a couple of goodkids in Josh and Jose,” saidMelgoza. “I think it was agood solid season last year.We built on our numbers andwe built the program back towhere I’d like to see it.”

The team will be fairlyyoung with only two seniorson the roster in Jared Smarttand Codey Smith, a newcomerfrom Wiley High School.

Juniors will include NolanAnderson, Philip Binder, Da-vis Haggard, and Grant Hag-gard.

Sophomores on the rosterwill include Matthew Aguilerafrom Wiley, Dalton Bray, andDakota Jara.

Also new to the team aretwo freshmen Josh Davis andEric Pinon from Garden City,Kan.

“We’re going to be a youngteam and that’s a good thing,”said Melgoza. “Age and size, Ifeel, doesn’t carry a factor incross country.”

Melgoza said the team willhave two good leaders in An-derson and Smartt.

“They’ve been in the pro-gram for three and four yearsnow and are real solid run-ners,” he said. “They are start-ing to come into their own.

They’re understanding what Iexpect a runner should bementally as well as physically.”

Melgoza also expects GrantHaggard to have a successfulseason.

“I’ve been pushing Grant fortwo years now,” said the La-

mar coach. “He’s an excellentmotocross rider and he lovesto compete in that realm. I’mtrying to use that to translateover to cross country andtrack. He knows how to winand it’s just a matter of himgaining confidence and believ-ing in his ability.”

Melgoza said he’s high ontwo freshmen in Davis and Pi-non.

“Josh is doing a super joband has been pushing the sen-iors and juniors,” he said.“He’s not big but is going tomake a lot of noise as a fresh-man. I’m anxiously to see howhe does. He’s a kid that comesin with a lot of drive and that’sexciting to see.”

“Eric is a new kid and he’salso doing a super job,” citiedMelgoza. “He’s in my top fiveright now. He’s another kidlike Josh and not very big, buthe’s up there running with thebig dogs.”

“The rest of the kids on theteam are also doing a realgood job,” Melgoza said.“They still haven’t come intotheir own and still haven’treached the potential I thinkthey can. But they’re workinghard for us and they are goingto push the varsity guys.”

Looking ahead to the sea-son, Melgoza said, “I alwayshave high expectations. I liketaking the kids to competeagainst the mountain and pri-vate schools and see what wecan do. We can’t recruit kidslike they can.”

Melgoza noted that Class3A in cross country is chang-ing a little bit with Alamosadropping into the classificationand the region.

“Alamosa is rich in traditionand probably has one of thefinest coaches in the statewhen it comes to high schoolcross country and track andfield,” he said. “They alwaysput together a good product.Classical Academy is alsogoing to be tough becausethey’re 60 to 70 kids deep. Ibelieve Salida returns somegood runners also.”

As far as Lamar is con-cerned, Melgoza said, “I feelwe’ll be able to compete andwe’re looking forward to theseason.”

WILEYLedger Staff Report

For the first time since 2002, theLady Panthers qualified for the statetournament under second-year headcoach Audrey Bauer.

At the Class 1A state tournamentin Denver, Wiley went 1-2 in poolplay and finished the season with a19-9 record.

“The success that these girls hadlast year — a trip to state in volley-ball, state runner-up in basketball, and several qualifying for state intrack — has only helped us,” saidBauer. “These girls have reallygrown and matured in just one year.”

The Lady Panthers lost one oftheir top hitters to graduation in out-side hitter Tanner Parmely, as wellas middle Sandra Morales and out-side Katherine DeWitt.

But they do return four starters in-cluding their leading hitter 6-0 juniorTaylin Spitzer. Middle hitter TeriJohnson, just a sophomore, returnsgiving Bauer and her coaching stafftwo strengths to build around.

As important, Wiley returns setterKacey Wells and libero Erika Rag-land, two important cogs in the Wileyoffense and defense.

Spitzer was a first-team selectionon the Arkansas Valley All-Confer-ence volleyball teams while Raglandwas named to the second-team.

“We must replace three hitters andwork hard on our passing, so we defi-nitely have things to work on,” saidBauer. “We have a lot of possibilitiesthough.”

Bauer is looking at younger class-men Sabra Perdue, Brenna Cash, and Bailey Dotson as possible hit-ters. Wiley’s only senior, TessaMcDonald will get a look there also.Sophomore Kim States will give Wi-ley some defensive presence as well.

“Our JV girls have improved leapsand bounds, so I am really excitedabout our prospects,” Bauer said.

Looking at the teams in Class 1ADistrict 3, Bauer said it should becompetitive. “Walsh will be good inour district and Holly has been goodin junior high the last couple ofyears,” she said. “But we have goodplayers to build around in crucial po-sitions. We are very young age wise, but I like this team. It should be anexciting year.”

Wildcats look to make runBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

The Holly High School footballteam was expected to be one ofthe top contenders in the ArkansasValley 8-man Conference last sea-son.

Instead, the Wildcats stumbledand finished fourth in the leaguestandings and ended the year with4-6 record under new head coachScott Hodgson.

“With a new coach there were alot of adjustments to make,” saidHodgson. “But I feel we’re headedin the right direction thisyear.“Holly owned a 1-2 recordheading into their conferenceschedule a year ago.

The Wildcats got off to a 2-0start with big wins over Wiley andMcClave but lost their last threeleague games falling to Spring-field, 44-14; Walsh, 62-22; and Gra-nada, 30-28.

In the cross-division playoffs,Holly came up with a big win overthe Fowler Grizzlies, 38-32, to ex-tend the season another week.

The season ended when Hollywas stomped by the Merino Rams,63-8. Merino went on to win theClass A 8-man state championshipover defending state championDayspring Christian.

Hodgson lost just three seniorsfrom last year’s team includingrunning back Mike Salgado, whorushed for 1,500 yards.

The Wildcats have 23 playersout for this year’s team and returnseven starters on offense and sev-

en starters on defense.Looking to have a big senior

campaign will be Mikey Lozano, a6-0, 185-pound running back, whowas a first-team selection on theArkansas Valley All-Conferenceteam.

“We lost running back Mike Sal-gado and it’s hard to replace a kidlike that,” Hodgson said. “But wehave some kids ready to step it up.Mikey Lozano will be a key part ofour offense and we’re expectingbig things from him and our wholeteam.“Back to direct the offense atquarterback will be Stetson Rush-ton, a 6-1, 170-pound junior. Rush-ton was an honorable-mention se-lection on the all-conference team.

Also in the backfield will be full-back Jace Nordyke, a 5-9, 160 sen-ior.

Twin brothers Estevan (6-0, 200senior) and Richard Hernandez(6-0, 210 senior) will lineup on theoffensive line as double tight ends.Estevan was named all-conferencehonorable-mention last year andhe could also see duty as a run-ning back.

The interior front line will beanchored by first-team all-confer-ence player Brandon Hess, a 6-4,210-pound senior guard.. He’ll bejoined by Jeremy Brian, a 5-8, 170sophomore, at center. The otherguard position will be manned byJace Massar, a 6-4, 230 junior.

“Last year we started the seasonwith three new linemen,” ex-plained Hodgson. “Now they’remore comfortable with each otherand the communication is better.

We will have good size up andwe’re expecting good things fromour front five.“On the defensiveside, Dylan Hammit, a 5-9, 170sophomore, will play at noseguard. The defensive ends will beHess and Massar.

Lining up at linebackers will beLozano and Richard and EstevanHernandez. The safety will be Ty-lor Swopes, a 5-11, 170 jun-ior.Looking at the Arkansas ValleyConference, Hodgson said thatWalsh get the nod to win theleague title, but anything can hap-pen.

“This is a tough league and onany given Friday night it dependson who shows up and plays thebest. Walsh, Granada, and Spring-field are going to be tough againand McClave and Wiley are goingto be better this year also. Wehave a lot of potential but the keyis to perform to your potential.”

Lady Wildcats look for turn aroundBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

The Holly High School vol-leyball team will enter the2010 season under second-year head coach CatherineHodgson.

The Lady Wildcats lost fiveseniors from a team that onlywon four matches last year.

Looking back on her firstyear at the helm, Hodgsonsaid, “I learned a lot about myplayers and a lot about myselfas a coach. We didn’t make itpast districts, which was a dis-

appointment. But we learned alot about each other and weimproved during the course ofthe season.”

“This year, we’re going totry different things and lookforward to putting those towork this year,” she said. “Isee a lot of good things hap-pening for us this year. Wehave a lot of potential and girlsare working hard. The girlscoming back are hungry andwant more.”

With 16 out for this year’steam, Hodgson has a solid ofgroup of four seniors that shehopes can provide the leader-ship to get the Lady Wildcatsover the hump.

Seniors on this year’s teamwill include Shelbie Weeder,5-10 outside hitter; Kylene Da-vis, 5-7 utility player; RhiannonCampbell, 5-3 outside/rightside hitter; and Delaine Gar-cia, 5-5 libero.

Leading the attack at the netwill be junior Lora Kirmer, a6-2 middle hitter, who earnedsecond-team honors on the Ar-kansas Valley All-Conferencevolleyball teams a year ago.

Also expected to makesome big contributions will bejunior Liberty Boling, a 5-9outside/right side hitter; jun-ior Kayla Guiterrrez, a 5-4 set-ter; and sophomore Kensie Si-mon, 5-11 middle hitter.

“Shelbie is definitely goingto be the leader of our teamfrom the outside,” said Hodg-son. “Lora is going to be phe-nomenal as a middle hitter.

Kensie (Simon) is coming upas a sophomore and has beena lot on her hitting this sum-mer. Delaine is going to be anawesome libero. Those fourare going to be some key play-ers for us. I have a couple ofother players (Kylene Davis

and Liberty Boling) that aregood hitters. We’re just figur-ing out which side they hitbetter from.”

Rounding out the team arejunior Kenzi Tefertiller; sopho-mores Kayla Hannel and Jor-dan Fletcher as well as fresh-men Tiana Isley, SheridanRushton, Ashlyn Hess, LaceyDarnell, and Alexa Griego.

On the varsity roster will beDarnell, and Hess, and Rush-ton.

“We missed having someleadership last year and Ithink we have that this year,”said Hodgson. “I think we alsohave bonded more togethersince the tragic accident ofone of players Serena Hernan-

dez, a junior. We’re thinkingabout her and talked about it.We had T-shirts made withher number on them in herhonor.”

Holly enters its third year atthe Class 1A level. The LadyWildcats are members of Dis-trict 3 and will play against thelikes of Wiley, Kim, Spring-field, Walsh, South Baca, andManzanola.

’I’m excited about the sea-son,” Hodgson said. “I thinkit’s going to be a good year.”

Facing some heavy losses tograduation, most observers feltthat Granada High School foot-ball program would face a re-building mode last season.

However, rebuilding isn’t aword that veteran coach Man-uel Gonzales likes to use.

He was forced to put someyoung players into action andthey responded with a fairlysuccessful season.

Last year, Granada startedthe season with three straightlosses to defending state cham-pion Dayspring Christian, 41-14;Stratton, 38-14; and CheyenneWells, 34-8.

But the Bobcats went on towin four of its five games in theArkansas Valley 8-man Confer-ence. They defeated Spring-field, 24-7, before losing a closegame to Walsh, 34-28.

Granada then rolled off threestraight wins over McClave,50-22; Wiley, 61-19; and edgedHolly, 30-28.

The conference race endedin a three-way tie for first placebetween Walsh, Springfield, and Granada that resulted in aCalifornia playoff that wasplayed at Savage Stadium in La-mar.

In the first half, Granada fellto Springfield, 26-0, butbounced back to beat a banged-up Walsh team, 8-0, in the sec-ond half to earn the No. 2 seedfor the cross-divisional playoffs.

“We did okay last year,” saidGonzales. “We knocked offsome good teams like Spring-field and Holly and that sur-prised me.“In the cross-division-al playoffs, Granada defeatedHoehne, 26-6, but the seasonwould end for the Bobcats inthe first-round of the 8-manstate playoffs as they wereburied by Antonito, 54-12.

Gonzales lost some other keyplayers to graduation and alsosaw two key players transfer.

Leading the Bobcats will bereturning senior quarterbackTraegon Marquez, an Arkansas

Valley Conference first-team se-lection.

Marquez will be joined in thebackfield by sophomore SaulPizarro at tailback and juniorTony Esquibel and sophomoreCaleb Harris rotating at full-back.“Traegon is our veteranback there and he did a goodjob for us last year,” praisedGonzales. “I feel Saul, Tony, and Caleb will give us a goodrunning game.“Receivers willfeature sophomores KolbyPalmer, Bryan Gonzales, andBrynden Burns.

On the front line, sophomoreSam Rink gets the inside nod atcenter while Brady Rink, a jun-ior, will play right guard andsophomore Dillon Bohlander atleft guard. Many of the sameplayers will play on the defen-sive side of the ball but Gon-zales will also count on seniorKyle Hartshorn, junior JuanMorales, and sophomores Tan-ner Grasmick, Chase Holden, and Antonio Huerta to contrib-ute on the defensiveside.“We’ve still got a lot ofyoung kids,” said Gonzales.“We’ve been hitting it prettyhard in practice and we’regoing to play hard.“Looking atthe Arkansas Valley Confer-ence, Gonzales gives the nod toWalsh. From there he feels it iswide open.

Bobcats return with core playersBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

For Granada volleyballcoach Cindy Otto it seems ev-ery time she heads into a newseason it’s been a young teamthat she’ll put on the floor.

That seems to be the caseagain this year.

The fifth year head coachhas 21 players out for the teambut has only one senior on theroster. The rest of team will in-clude six juniors, seven sopho-mores, and seven freshmen.

However, she isn’t going tocomplain about the numbers. When she first took over theprogram she barely hadenough players to practicewith.

“We’re going to be youngagain, but hopefully the expe-rience some of our playershave gained will pay divi-dends,” she said.

Last year, the Lady Bobcatsstruggled as far as victorieswere concerned but Otto saidshe measured the success ofthe season with the progressher players made.

Otto lost only one starterfrom last year so she returnsas nucleus of players.

The Granada coach will becounting on the following play-ers to turn things around.

Leading the way will be Car-rie Marrow, a 5-8 junior setter;Britt Widener, a 5-6 juniormiddle hitter; Selena Demers,a 5-5 junior middle hitter; Ky-reth Tirado, a 5-4 junior mid-dle hitter; Marlena Rojas, a 5-6sophomore outside hitter;Alyssa Dulac, a 5-4 sophomoresetter; and Rebecca Gomez, a5-6 junior middle hitter.

Competing in one of thetougher districts in the state,Otto knows it’s been tough forher team to break into the win-ning column.

In District 2, McClave andKit Carson have been theteams to beat but have suf-fered some tough losses dueto graduation.

The rest of the District 2field includes Cheraw, Chey-enne Wells, Eads, Karval, andPlainview.

New coach to direct Lady CardinalsFormer assistanttakes overprogram

By John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

Entering the 2010 season, the McClave High School vol-leyball program will be underthe direction of a new headcoach Rachel Dunning.

Dunning takes over thereins from former coachBrianne Howe, who guidedthe Lady Cardinals for fiveyears.

Dunning won’t be a strangerto the program as she servedas the assistant coach the pastfive years. Howe had a suc-cessful tenure at McClave asshe led the Lady Cardinals tothe state tournament all fiveyears including a state runner-up finish in 2005.

In last year’s state tourna-ment, McClave went 1-2 inpool play and finished the sea-son with a 19-9 record.

In the state tournament,McClave opened with a three-game sweep over North Park.

In their next match,McClave tangled with top seedand eventual state championOtis and gave the Lady Bull-dogs everything they wantedbefore falling 27-25, 27-25, and25-15.

Playing for a spot in thesemifinal round, McClave fellin five games to Weldon Valley25-27, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, and12-15.

McClave lost six seniorstarters from last year’s teamso Dunning has some holes tofill.

Returning starters for theLady Cardinals will be KarleeStuart, Melissa Navarrette, and Sydney Curley.

Dunning said that Stuart, a5-0 senior outside hitter, willcarry the load at the net forthe Lady Cardinals.

“Not only is Karlee a big hit-ter, but she also passes theball well,” said Dunning.“She’s a great leader and we’reexpecting a lot things fromher.”

Navarrette, a 5-3 junior, re-turns as the setter for theteam.

“Melissa is dynamite,” Dun-ning said. “She sees the floor

so well and can set the ballanywhere to perfection.”

Curley, a 5-11 senior middlehitter, played mostly in thefront row last year. However, she is going to play all aroundthis year. “Sydney is a great

middle hitter, but I’m expect-ing more from her this yearespcially with blocking. LikeKarlee, she’s going to be a vi-tal player for us.”

Dunning said that KelseyThaxton, a 5-7 junior outside

hitter, also saw some valuablevarsity playing time last yearand moves into a starting posi-tion.

The new head coach willalso look for big contributionsfrom Sara Turner, a 5-10 soph-omore outside hitter; Cami

Idler, a 5-8 sophomore setter;and Tausha Sniff a 5-11 sopho-more middle hitter.

“We’re basically a prettyyoung team,” said Dunning.“So we’re going to depend onour first seven players to playboth in the front and back

row,” explained Dunning.Looking ahead to the sea-

son, Dunning stated, “Our ex-pectations have not changed. We know what our goals areand we will do what it takes toachieve those goals.”

Cardinals look to bounce backBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

It was a rebuilding year forthe McClave High School foot-ball team in 2009 as the Cardi-nals finished the year with a 1-7record.

The lone victory for McClavecame in the last game of theregular season as they defeatedarchrival Wiley, who finishedwinless for the second seasonin a row.

Third-year head coachShawn Randel lost only onesenior from last year’s team sohe brings back a lot of playerswho gained some valuable ex-perience and playing time.

“We played a lot of freshmenlast season and you know withfreshmen you’re going to makea lot of mistakes,” said Randel.“Hopefully those guys havegrown a little bit. Now we havea chance to start seniors, jun-iors, and sophomores this yearinstead of freshmen and that al-ways helps.”

Randel has 18 prospects outfor this year’s team which isfive more players than he hadlast year.

On offense, Randel said thequarterback position is the big

question mark facing the Cardi-nals.

“The big question mark is atquarterback, no doubt about it,”he said. “We had two freshmenworking there last year andhave a lot of inexperience atthat position.”

Randel has tabbed Dillan Kel-ley, a 5-9, 125 sophomore, as

the candidate to run the offensefor the Cardinals.

Kelley will be joined in thebackfield by fullback WaceyTurner, 5-10, 150 senior andtailback William Valdez, a 6-0,170 senior.

“I’ve always been a run firsttype of coach,” said Randel. “SoWacey and William are going toget a bunch of carries.”

Tate Mauser, a 6-4 junior, willanchor the line at center. Hewill be flanked by guards ChaseMorris, a 6-2, 235 junior andJ.D. Stuart, a 5-10, 245 junior.

At the end positions will beCody Canfield, a 6-4, 150 sopho-more and Keaton Sloan, a 5-10,160 junior.

“We’ll have some decent size

up front and hopefully we canturn it around on offense,” saidRandel.

On defense, the front line willbe led by Mauser at nose guardand Turner and Canfield at de-fensive ends. Playing at line-backer will be Stuart, Kelley, and Sterling Noecker, 5-10, 180. Sloan and Valdez will be thesafeties in the defensive back-field.

“We did some good thingson defense last year,” Randelsaid. “We switched to a 4-2 andprobably going to switch again.I want to take advantage of oursize and get some bigger kidson the field. I think we’ll be alittle bit faster than we were lastyear. We struggled stoppingthe run and hopefully we can fixsome things. As you know, there’s some good runningteams in the conference.”

And speaking of the Arkan-sas Valley Conference, Randelsaid that Walsh will be the teamto beat no question. After thathe feels it could be wide open.

“Springfield had a good sea-son last year,” he said. “Gra-nada lost two players who trans-ferred but they’re always tough.Holly should be better afterplaying under a new coach lastyear. Wiley has a new coach

but he’s been there before andhe’ll be working hard to turnthings around for them.““Wehad a tough season last year, but our kids played hard,”added Randel. “They got betterand I really respect them withhow hard they worked. Therewere a lot of games where wewere just outmanned. Hopeful-ly, we’ll turn the table thisyear.”

EADS

Eads football to field young teamBy Rhonda UhlandThe Lamar Ledger

Starting his third season asthe head coach for the EadsHigh School football team,Dustin Uhland would likenothing better than to see hisathletes have a successful sea-son.

The 2009 season ended withEads making their way to theFinal Four in the Class A6-man state playoffs before be-ing eliminated by Hi-Plains ina high scoring affair, 59-47.The loss snapped a six-gamewinning streak for the Eaglesas they finished the seasonwith a 7-3 record.

Although Eads lost a massof athletic seniors to gradua-tion, this year’s team is re-building with strong under-classmen who have good workethics and a will to win.

If there is a weakness forthe Eagles it is that they areyoung, as they only have onereturning senior, two juniors, eleven sophomores and onefreshman.

“We definitely are going tobe a young team this year,”said Uhland.

The strengths seem to out-weigh the weaknesses thoughwith Eads having pretty goodnumbers for 6 man footballand their size will also work intheir favor.

Uhland will turn to sopho-more Cory Miller to run theoffense at quarterback. Also inthe backfield will be seniorAuston Randolph and sopho-more Alberto Gutierrez.

Up front in the trenches,Uhland said players handlingthe snapping duties at centerwill be sophomore Daniel Wei-

rich, junior Jon Mitchek, andjunior Justin Lenox.

At the end positions will besophomores Logan Crawfordand Troy Miller or freshmanBlaine Winder.

Uhland said that many ofthe players above will also seework on defense.

Playing at linebacker will beRandolph, Guiterrez, TroyMiller, and Crawford.

At the defensive ends willbe Lenox, Mitchek, and Wei-rich and Winder will play atsafety.

Rounding out the roster isTyler Harris, T.J. Mitchell,Kyle Crow, Taylor Weirich,Logan Smith, and Daniel Orte-ga.

“We’re still trying to ironout some positions,” explainedUhland. “But things are start-ing to take shape. We’ll knowmore when we get that firstgame under our belts.”

Eads will start the season onthe road with games againstEdison and Deer Trail beforereturning to play at home inmid-September when the Ea-gles take on the Hi-Plains Pat-riots

It’s deja vu for Dave Eastin.Eastin returns to Wiley

High School as both the su-perintendent and head footballcoach.

He served as the Panther’shead man in football from2002-2006.

Like his first appearance atWiley, Eastin inherits a teamthat has struggled the last twoyears.

“It is deja vu for me,” Eastinsaid. “My first years at Wileywere tough. We had to over-come a losing mentality.”

And Eastin did; Wiley lost ina California playoff his thirdyear for a chance to advanceto the state playoffs, thenmade the playoffs his finalyear when they fell to Haxtunin the state quarterfinals. It re-mains Wiley’s last appearancein the playoff field for football. The Panthers, who were 0-8each of the last two years, have responded to Eastin’s en-thusiasm, as they have 21 play-ers out this year.

“We wanted to get somebodies out here, and we wantto change that mindset. Wehave some bodies and we areworking on changing thatmindset every day at practice,”Eastin remarked.

The Panthers will buildaround five seniors - Ivan Cas-tanos, line: Zack Garner, endand line; Heath Perdue, full-

back; Brandon Rhuba, end;and Taylor Wilson, a runningback.

Wilson was named honorab-

le-mention on last year’s Ar-kansas Valley All-Conferencefootball teams.

All five mentioned above

will also look to help on thedefensive side of the ball aswell.

The Panthers will look to

run out of the I-formation of-fensively and look to have abalanced offense.

“We have lots of work todo,” admitted Eastin, “But thisis a dream come true for me.To be able to come to a schoolas both an administrator and acoach is just a fabulous oppor-tunity. I am absolutely ecstaticabout this. My family lovedWiley the first time, and wejust feel lucky to be here now.”

EADSPREP VOLLEYBALL

Lady Eagles look to get back on trackBy John ContrerasThe Lamar Ledger

The Eads High School vol-leyball program will welcomethe addition of two playersfrom Plainview High Schoolon the team this year.

Lack of players forced Plain-view to co-op with Eads.

“The combination withPlainview has been a positivesituation,” said Janelle Crow, who enters her fourth year asthe head coach for Eads.

The Lady Eagles are com-ing off a season where theystruggled with some youthand inexperience.

Crow said it’s a different sit-uation this year as her girlsare working hard to improve.

“We have girls who don’tlike to lose, so they are work-ing hard and do not want to gothrough the season they hadlast year,” she said.

Returning starters for Eadsinclude Marisa Dixon, a 5-11sophomore middle hitter andKailey Lane, a 5-5 senior set-ter.

Paige Specht, a 5-5 senioroutside hitter, and NatalyaWeber, a 5-6 junior setter, both started for Plainview lastyear and will move into start-ing roles for the Lady Eagles.

Other players Crow will alsobe counting on to fill someholes on the varsity team willbe Bekah Hallman, a 5-7 junioroutside hitter and Kailyn Lane,a 5-3 freshmen defensive spe-cialists.

Also returning is Emily Wei-rich, a 5-9 middle hitter, whomissed last season due to aninjury.

“I look for Emily and Marisato be a good combination inthe middle for us,” said Crow.“I feel our strength will be atthe net if we work well togeth-er. I also have some good set-ters that will play a big role.”

Rounding out the roster areLeisha Peck, Dorian Ray, Alys-sa Splitter, Mikayla Schmidt,Shealynne McCracken, AddieSeifried, Dena Hallman, andSheri Weber.

Besides Eads, the teams inDistrict 2 include McClave, KitCarson, Cheyenne Wells, Che-raw, Karval, and Granada.

“This district is alwaystough,” said Crow. “We’re ap-proaching every team as atough opponent and with thatmentality I think that willmake us a better team. Like Isaid before things have beenpositive and the girls are work-ing together.”
