For the past several years, the Lowry High School foot-ball team has been one of the most successful in the state of Nevada. The Buckaroos have sent a number of its players off to college and they are contributing in big ways at the next level.

However, it’s a different look this fall in many ways. Long-time head coach Tim Billingsley retired after the 2014 season and assistant coach Taua Cabatbat has taken over the program, bringing his style to the Buckaroos.

In addition, Lowry must replace 27 players from a sea-son ago, as just seven players return from the varsity squad.

“We know we lost a lot of guys,” Cabatbat said. “We have a lot of young kids coming up to the varsity, but they know me from school and practice. We are not going to change too much and stick with the same thing. We will be mostly a team of juniors and there will be some bumps along the road. We want to change the mindset and atti-tude of this group. I just want them to work hard.”

Look for Brady Lange, a junior, to take over the quarter-back position for the Buckaroos. Lange saw his first action as quarterback last year at the JV level.

“He improved throughout the year,” Cabatbat said. “It’s a big jump up to the next level. We don’t want him to feel that he has to do too much, it will be a learning experience.”

His backup will be Nate Nelson, one of the few seniors on the squad. Nelson will also play wide receiver and cor-nerback. He was honorable mention selection in the Divi-sion I-A North at cornerback in 2014.

The running back spots look to get filled by junior Jacob Hernandez and senior Mason Morrison. Morrison missed a majority of the 2014 season, rushing for just 27 yards. Hernandez played in nine games, rushing for 19 yards.

Lowry lost 2,600 yards on the ground and 30 touch-downs with the graduation of Beau Billingsley, Donovan

Brumm and Christian Gray.“We have some pretty good skill guys back,” Cabatbat

said. “But, they didn’t see a lot of time last year behind those other guys.”

Lowry does bring back four players on the offensive and defensive lines in Shaun Mentaberry, Mikeas Somers, Chris Karchella and Anthony Silva. A large group of lineman have moved up from the JV team as well.

“I think we have good front five,” said the coach. “We have all the right pieces, we just need to get them working together. We had some rough moments in the scrimmage against Elko and that will happen. They weren’t used to the speed. It’s a different animal at this level. I expected a lot of what I saw. I want them to have a good attitude. This group hasn’t won that many games in the past couple of years. We got to get them to believe in themselves.”

Look for Jed Teichert, Roberto Rodriguez and Michael Venzor to take some reps at the wide receiver spot. They played that position last year with the junior varsity.

The Buckaroos have been mostly a run first team over the past few years, but slowly added to the passing game. That should be the same for this season, but the Bucka-roos will not be afraid to throw the ball if needed, keeping opposing defenses honest.

It will be much of the same on the defensive side of the ball as well.

Defensively in 2014, Lowry allowed 24 points a game. The Buckaroos held six opponents to 24 points or less.

The run to the top of the Division I-A North will be a tough one for the Buckaroos with the likes of Churchill County, Elko, Spring Creek, Fernley and Truckee.

Lowry will not play a 10th game this season and opens its season on Friday, Sept. 4, against Fernley in Winnemuc-ca at 7 p.m. It’s the Division I-A North opener for both teams.

The schedule is a little more favorable for the Buckaroos with five home games. Lowry hits the road for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 12, with a trip to Truckee. The Bucka-roos return home to play Wooster on Friday, Sept. 18, and they will go back to California and Lake Tahoe on Friday Sept. 25, to play South Tahoe.

This year’s Homecoming game will be Friday, Oct. 2, against Dayton. After roads trips to Elko (Oct. 9) and Sparks (Oct. 16), Lowry closes out the regular season at home ver-sus Spring Creek (Oct. 23) and Churchill County (Oct. 29).

The top four teams in the league advance to the regional playoffs, where the No. 1 seed will host the No. 4 seed, while the No. 3 seed travels to face the No. 2 seed. From there, the teams will be re-seeded for the state semifinals to account for the two Southern I-A schools.

Moapa Valley and Desert Pines should provide the toughest challenges in the Division I-A South. Moapa Valley overcame a large fourth-quarter deficit to Desert Pines last year in the state championship to win the title.

“You want to win every game you play, but that is not what we are looking at this year,” Cabatbat said. “I want to see us compete. My big deal is that we improve. I want to see kids grow and not making as many mistakes. We will be alright. We are trying to find ourselves as a team right now. We need an identity. What are we going to be and what are we going to do? If we can get some wins and be around .500 that will be a good year for us.”

By Tony ErquiagaWinnemucca Publishing

Redemption. You could say that is the motto for the Lowry High

School volleyball team this year. After playing through their most successful season since

2007, the Lady Bucks saw their year come to an unexpected end in Winnemucca in the regional semifinals to Truckee.

A relatively young Lowry team finished 27-4 overall and 14-2 in the Division I-A North, but were left heartbroken after the playoff loss to the Wolverines.

One year later, the Lady Bucks are ready to make noise and hope to advance to the state tournament for the first time since 2007. Lowry has won one state title in school history — 2006 against North Tahoe.

“I am excited for the season,” said LHS head coach Megan Allen. “We are at a high level in practice already. It was a bitter end to the season last year, but a good learning experience for us. We had all the tools physically, but the program had not been in that position in a long time to get to the state tournament. There was a lot of pressure on the girls. One of our goals this year is to be mentally strong. With the experience we have, we want to make it happen this year. We have some unfinished business.”

Lowry returns nine players from 2014 and features six seniors — most have been with the varsity program since their sophomore year.

The offense at the net begins with senior Juliana Vel-asco, who led Lowry with 178 kills and 38 blocks in 2014. Velasco has been on the Lowry roster since her freshman season. She was named to the Division I-A North first team and the Division I-A all-state second team as a sophomore. In 2014, she was first-team all-state choice and was named to the first team in the Division I-A North.

“Juliana is going to be a force at the net,” Allen said. “She keeps getting better and better. When she is on, she is tough to stop at the net with her hitting and blocking.”

Sierra Thiede, Darion Iturriaga and Jillian Albright, all seniors, return as well. Iturriaga is the Lady Bucks’ libero (defensive specialist). As a sophomore, she set a Division I-A record for digs in a match against Truckee with 45. Last year, Iturriaga finished with 388 digs, which was the

second most in Division I-A history. She was named to the I-A North honorable mention team.

Albright is the top setter for the Lady Bucks but she can also be used as a hitter. Lowry could change up its offense from a 5-1 set to a 6-2, allowing Albright to get more hit-ting chances at the net as well. Albright had 111 assists in 2014 to go with 55 kills. She was second-team choice in the Division I-A North last year.

Thiede, in her third year on the varsity team, will play as an outside hitter for Lowry, but she is also strong on the defensive side. Thiede had 73 kills in 2014, but also finished with 373 digs, which is the third most in I-A history, As with Albright, she was named to the I-A North second team.

“It’s nice that we already have foundations down,” Allen said. “We have great defense and passing from Dar-ion, Sierra can hit the ball and play defense with digs and blocks and Jillian can play different spots. We have great leadership with our six seniors and they have something to prove. The nice thing is we are tweaking and adding some higher level stuff right now to use.”

Ashlee Barron and Chelsea Herrera round out the group of seniors. Barron was an honorable mention selection in the Division I-A North last year with 47 kills. Both players figure to be a strong presence at the net.

“Chelsea has improved a ton over the past year and being left-handed she gives a different look to teams. Ashlee gives us a strong presence on the outside,” added the coach.

Lowry had four sophomores on the roster last year and three return in Brooklyn Waller, Madison Montero and Hannah Hillyer.

Waller is also a setter for the Lady Bucks but can be a hitter at the net as well.

Hillyer and Montero saw ample playing time in their sophomore campaign. Hillyer had 53 kills and 18 blocks, while Montero had 44 kills. Hillyer plays in the middle, while Montero is an outside hitter.

The Lady Bucks are going with a roster of 13, as junior Aimee Brandon steps up from the JV team, as does sopho-mores Alyssa Kuskie, Kepa Bengochea and Jadyn Eastman. Lowry’s JV team went undefeated last year.

“Our juniors are right with our seniors and excited and enthusiastic,” Allen said. “The sophomores are going to go through a learning experience and they have accepted that with grace. I want them to learn from the other girls.”

Lowry opens the season at the Yerington Invitational today and Saturday. The Lady Bucks are scheduled to play

Silver Stage, Sparks and Coleville in pool play. Elko, Dayton and Spanish Springs are scheduled to compete as well. Lowry beat Spanish Springs last year in the tourney.

“Our goal is to go in there and win it,” Allen said. “We know Yerington and Spanish Springs have tough teams.”

Lowry will move on to the High Sierra Invitational on Sept. 4-5 hosted by Galena High School in Reno. That tournament is one of the toughest preseason tournaments in Nevada.

“That will be great tournament for us,” said the coach. “We will see what kind of team we will have.”

Lowry also hopes to set up a match with Bishop Manogue during the year. Both teams attended the same camp over the summer.

“Their coach was impressed with our program,” Allen said. “That is the ultimate sign of respect when I hear that from another coach.”

Graduation hit a number of teams in the Division I-A North, including regional champion Elko. Truckee also lost a handful of players, so the league should be up for grabs.

The Division I-A North Regional Championship will be held Nov. 6-7 in Truckee. The format has expanded to six teams, with the top two seeds getting byes on the first day. The state tournament will be held Nov. 13-14 in Las Vegas.

“This team is growing, learning and pushing them-selves,” Allen said. “They are not satisfied with just being good. They have a goal in front of them.”

There were a number of unknowns as the Lowry High School girls soccer team took to the field a season ago.

The Lady Bucks featured mostly underclassmen and were under the direction of new head coach Melanie Rasor. Throw in a number of games being postponed to fires in the area and it made for an up and down first half of the year.

In danger of missing out of the regional playoffs, it all began to click for the Lady Bucks in the final two weeks of the regular season. Lowry won its final six regular season matches, including victories over Elko and a 6-0 rout of Spring Creek. Lowry’s season ended with a 4-0 loss to South Tahoe in the semifinals of the regional champion-ship, but the foundation was laid for the 2015 season.

“We really came on strong at the end,” Rasor said. “The girls gained a lot of confidence in themselves. They have been together for a long time and they are excited for the season.”

Lowry brings back 12 players from last year, but will need to replace top goal scorer Monique Rodriguez and goalkeeper Jasmine Marchand. The Lady Bucks will look to their five seniors for strong leadership.

“Scoring is something we know we have to improve on,” Rasor said. “It’s something we are working on and it’s all about improving their confidence. They are playing good in practice and they need to take that to the game, which I think they will. We want to take more shots this year.”

Lowry should have a strong presence in the midfield and defense, where all five seniors reside. Caitlynn Cooper was a second-team choice in the Division I-A North last year as a defender, but she can also play the midfield. As a junior she scored four goals and had two assists.

Lindsay Pate, an honorable mention selection a season ago, could be the answer at goalie, but coach Rasor would also like to see her on the field as a defender. In splitting time in the goal in 2014, Pate made 32 saves and allowed seven goals.

“These two are going to be solid captains for us,” Rasor said. “They can both play different positions. I know Lindsay can play in the goal, but I want her in the field. She has improved so much. We have to get one of the JV goalies trained right now.”

Maddie Mayo will take up one of the midfield spots and she was named to the Division I-A North honorable

mention team in 2014. As a junior, she scored three goals and added four assists. Brittany Partee and Cheyanna Wolicki will look to make it tough on opposing offensive players in their defensive spots.

“We are going to have players in different spots,” said the coach. “We will stick with our 4-4-2 formation, but we might use a 3-5-2 depending on who we are playing.”

One of the possible scoring threats comes from junior Audrey Snow, who tallied 10 goals as a freshman. Last year, she had four goals and four assists and was named to the honorable mention team.

As a freshman, Bailey Sapien scored six goals and had three assists. She is the top returning scorer for the Lady Bucks. Kenadee Jeppsen, a junior, and sophomores Hailey Hinkle and Shelby Garrison will look to add to the offen-sive attack.

Junior Alyssa Campbell will be a strong presence on defense as will sophomore Sylvie Prokasky.

Trista Furrh and McKenna Jones saw playing time with the varsity squad late in the year and Claudia Magana and Julia Laird join the team this year. The Lady Bucks will feature six sophomores on their roster.

“These girls are dedicated this year and are willing to try new spots,” Rasor said. “They learned how to win at the end of last year. I am excited to see what they can do.“

Lowry has an extra week to begin the season, which opens at the Spring Creek Jamboree on Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6. Those will be the only non-confer-ence matches for the Lady Bucks.

“It’s a big tournament for us,” Rasor said. “It will be huge for us and set the tone for the season. We want to get off to a good start.”

Lowry makes its home debut on Wednesday, Sept. 9, against Fernley. The Lady Bucks will have a stretch through the middle of the season where they will play six of eight games in Winnemucca.

The playoff structure has changed this year, with the Division I-A North Regional Tournament featuring six teams. The top two seeds receive a bye on the first day of the tournament, which will be held in Elko on Nov. 5-7.

The Lady Bucks played tough with the Lake Tahoe powers in Truckee and South Tahoe, but produced no wins. If Lowry can find a way to steal a victory from one of the two it would help in getting a higher playoff seed.

The Lady Bucks will also need to gain victories over Churchill County, Sparks, Elko and Spring Creek in order to slide into one of the playoff spots

“We showed that we can play and beat those teams,” Rasor said. “The goal now is to beat a South Tahoe or Truckee. The goal is to get back to the playoffs and a chance to get to state. We are going to give teams a run for their money. We need to step up another level.”

As for looking back on the 2014 season, that is a distant memory for the Lowry High School boys soccer team. What was thought to be a promising season, quickly turned sour for the Buckaroos, who missed out on the playoffs.

This fall brings a number of questions, as Lowry is begin-ning with a new slate and attitude. There are just a handful of players back from last year, but LHS head coach Steve Swanson is optimistic about the season. Lowry will feature 11 seniors this year.

“It will be a different looking team than from the past,” said Swanson. “We don’t have the talent that we did last, but we have way better attitudes than we did last year. That’s what killed us. I have high hopes that we can get in the top six and into the playoffs. We should be able to play with most of the teams if we can get everything working.”

The biggest issue for Lowry right is trying to find a goalie to start the season. Sergio Lopez played the spot for the Buckaroos and saw playing time during the season. Lowry could also look to Brian Shettler, but Swanson wants the senior to be on the field in his defender spot.

“That is the No. 1 question we have to answer,” said the coach. “I really don’t want to put him (Shettler) there. We are going to pin our hopes on someone new. He is going to have a couple weeks to get up to speed.”

There is just a couple of juniors on the squad and the coach plans on sending them with the JV team to the Spring Creek Jamboree this weekend to get some playing time.

The Buckaroos will look to seniors Jesus Escobedo as a scoring threat along with midfelder Jordan Diaz to be two of the leaders. Swanson added he has been impressed with the early play of Shettler and Levi Lloyd. Lloyd will be one of the main defenders for Lowry. Seniors Ariel Gutierrez and Weston Irons will be a defenders that Swanson will look to as well. Ariano Aguilar, a senior, will be counted on as a striker.

Look for the Buckaroos to get an offensive jump start from sophomore Pedro Lopez, who moves up from the junior varsity team. It will be possible that Lowry will play three sophomores and two freshmen in the lineup.

Matthew Kepler, Joseph Mullis, Trevor Burroughs, Nico Espinola and Diego Gudino are new to the varsity team.

“We just have 13 upperclassmen in the program,” said the coach. “It will be a learning experience for us. If we get any injuries, depth will be a problem for us. We have no varsity experience coming off the bench.”

There may or may not some formation changes when the Buckaroos hit the field. Lowry may use the 4-4-2 for-mation or go to a 3-5-2, depending on how the season plays out.

“I don’t know right now,” Swanson said. “Every Janu-ary, I sit down and write down what I think the team will look like. I didn’t do that this year. I didn’t know what I was going to have. I sat down last week to do it and was still thinking about it. If my defense is as good as I think it is and we settle in goal, I would like to go to a 3-5-2.”

At the moment, the coach is just happy with what he is seeing from his squad.

“The good thing is that we have been practicing four days a week all summer and we have been out here five hours a day for the last two weeks,” Swanson said. “There has been a lot work put in. The guys have been practicing hard and I am happy with that. They are getting better quickly and we will have to see where we end up at. All I ask is that they do the best they can. My biggest concern is we have no varsity experience on the bench. I will put up my starting 11 against anybody.”

Lowry has an extra week to prepare until its season opener at the Spring Creek Jamboree on Friday, Sept. 4, and Saturday, Sept. 5. The Buckaroos will get three pre-season matches in the two-day tournament. The Buckaroos make their home debut on Saturday, Sept. 12, against Churchill County at noon.

The Division I-A North moved back to a six-team region-al playoff this season. The Division I-A North Regional Championships will be held Nov. 5-7 in Elko, with the top two seeds getting byes.

South Tahoe and Truckee have perennial powers in the league, but the playoff race should be a close one. Lowry beat Fernley and Dayton twice a season ago, but will need to get wins over the likes of Spring Creek, Sparks, Elko and Churchill County to get in the playoffs.

“If we can stay healthy, we can give it a pretty good go,” Swanson said. “If we have some injuries like we did, it could be a struggle to get one of the playoff spots. But I know, if we play to our potential, we can play with the teams in our league.”

Over the past several years in northern Nevada, cross country is becoming more and more competitive in the Division I-A North. The likes of Spring Creek, Elko and Truckee have risen to the top of the league.

Lowry High School is looking to join those elite group teams once again and find its way back to the state tournament. The Buckaroos have worked hard in the off season for the past couple of years and the hopes are that commitment is going to pay off.

“I am excited for the season,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “The kids have been working hard since the end of last year. They ran all winter and I coached them in distance running during track season. We have been running since June, with a club that we put together.

Their times are way ahead of were they were last year.”The Lowry boys finished eighth at the Division I-A

North Regional Championships last year and five of the runners that participated in the regional are back, including Jonathan Madrid, a junior who finished 32nd last year with a time of 19 minutes, 49 seconds.

Devin Dowd is back for his junior year after placing 38th last season. Christopher Kearns and Chanse McAl-lister, both juniors return as well.

Omar Aranjo, a junior has shown improvement over the past year, and should be a mainstay in the lineup this year.

“We have a good group of boys,” Norcutt said. “They learned quite a bit about how to race last year and know what to expect now.”

Liam Gallups and Braden Thomas are back from 2014 and Gavin Ziemer, Will Kracaw and Jacob Means are new to the team.

Spring Creek and Elko finished first and second at the Division I-A North Regional Championships last year, with Spring Creek winning the state title and Clark finishing second. Spring Creek lost just two runners to graduation and Elko lost four.

“Those two are always going to be tough,” Norcutt said. “We have to get ourselves closer to them and race with their guys.”

The Lady Bucks roster has a handful of runners back, including three that ran in the regional championships a

year ago. The highest finisher among that group is junior Charice Brown, who placed 29th in the regional with a time of 23:11. Alex Ziemer and Camryn Maher return off the regional team that finished seventh.

Five new faces are in store for the Lady Bucks this year, including Rebecca Kuskie, Odessa Pearrow, Amelia Weber, Savannah Rorex and Brienna Everhart.

“We have a good group of girls back and some new ones that will help us,” said the coach. “We are working on being more competitive as a team and run together as a group. “Our goal is to be closer to the front of the field and looking to pass that next person in front of you.”

Truckee, the defending girls state champions, grad-uated the top two finishers at the state championships, but brings back five runners. The Wolverines had four freshmen run at the state championships. Spring Creek, who finished second, raced with all underclassmen a season ago.

“Truckee and Spring Creek are definitely going to be tough,” added the coach. “Our goal is always to get both teams to state. If we can’t, we are going to do our best to get individuals in both the boys and girls race to state.”

Lowry opens its season on Friday, Sept. 11, at North Tahoe. The Buckaroos will also make trips to Dayton, Fernley and its annual trek back to Boise, Idaho, for the Bob Firman Invitational. The Buckaroos host their annual meet on Friday, Oct. 9.

The regional championships take place on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. The state championships will be back at Rancho San Rafael on Saturday, Nov. 7. The top three finishing teams at the regional championships, advance to state. The top five individuals on non-qualifying teams advance to state as well.

“The goal is always to get to state as a team,” Nor-cutt said. “My big philosophy is on personal growth and advancement. The goal is to run each race faster than the previous one. I will consider it a positive and success-ful season if the kids continue to improve.”

The Lowry High School girls golf team has been one the prominent squads in the Division I-A over the past few years.

Despite losing one of their top golf-ers in Alyssa Dendary, the Lady Bucks are hoping to be near the top of the league once again, with five players returning from the state tournament team that finished fourth last season.

Lowry also has a new coach in Todd Milton, who replaces Vince Mendiola.

“I am excited about it,” said Milton. “It’s going to be a fun year. We have five juniors back and they all played in the state tournament, which is nice. We have some good experience. I feel we are going to have a nice team. We have taken it a little slow and getting them back into the flow of the game. I am thankful for the relationship with Joey (Dendary) and the staff at the golf course. They have been great with us and are willing to come out and help.”

Two of the top golfers that are back include Elise Rose and Brooklyn Backus. Rose and Backus were named to the all-league team last year. Rose had the seventh-best average in the Division I-A North at 95.5 and placed 16th at the state tournament with rounds of 99 and 97. Backus averaged 99 in league play, which was 10th best and as a sophomore she placed 15th in the state championships with a 195. Both play-ers have been with the program since their freshmen year, with two state tournament appearances each.

Fellow junior, Savanna Cox, was 12th in the average in the Division I-A North at 103 and she placed 25th at the state tournament, with a two-day total of 215.

Before last year, Kaity Sample had not picked up a golf club, but she quickly learned the game and was a contributor for the Lady Bucks. In her sophomore campaign, she averaged 111 and Sample placed 27th in the state tournament at 218.

The final returner from 2014, is Veronica Jones. She was in the top 25 in average in league and placed 33rd in the state championships with a score of 229.

“I am happy with what we have back, it’s a strong group of players,” Milton said. “From just watching them in the first week, chipping and putting is what we need to work on and we need some work out of the sand. They need to have the confidence to take that swing. The girls need to use the driving range wisely and just not get up there and grip it and rip it. They have to have a plan. I was impressed by how well they can hit the ball, there are some nice swings out there. It’s straight and long.”

Lowry will be aided by the addition of freshman Tatyana Carlson, who

played all summer. She won a number of junior events and broke 90 once.

“She will be a nice pick up for us,” added the coach. “She knows the game and is a good player. We have a solid six players that we can take to the course every week. I am very fortunate to inherit what Mr. Mendiola left, he did as great job.”

The roster is filled out by one more freshman in Hannah Havens.

Lowry finished second in the Divi-sion I-A North last year with 74 points, with Elko winning with 78. The Lady Bucks defeated the Indians twice in tournament play. Elko graduated its top two players, both placed in the top 13 at the state tournament.

Fernley, the other school that com-peted in the state championships from the North and returns Player of the Year in Brittany Evans. Evans placed fourth at the state tournament in 2014.

Lowry took part in a preseason ice-breaker this past Monday and gets the regular season underway on Wednes-day, Sept. 2, at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. The teams will stay in eastern Nevada and move over to Spring Creek on Thursday, Sept. 3.

The Lady Bucks will have to wait until the end of the regular season to host the Division I-A North on Thurs-day, Oct. 8.

The Division I-A North will not have a regional tournament this year and its three state participants will be based on the final regular season standings after nine tournaments. The Division I-A South will have a regional tournament with the top three teams advancing to the state tournament on Oct. 21-22 in Boulder City.

“I feel we are going to be compet-itive in the league,” Milton said. “We have some high expectations and want to get back to the state tournament. We can’t put ourselves in trouble right off the tee. The girls are excited. We don’t have any seniors and what we do from here builds for the next two years. I am not saying this year doesn’t count, because we have a good team. At the same time, it’s exciting to have the same seven girls and whatever we pick up in the next couple of years.”

MCDERMITT — For the first time in recent memory, the McDermitt High School volley-ball team will have a slew of seniors when it hits the floor this fall.

After a roller coaster season in 2014, where the Lady Bulldogs reached the regional play-offs before losing to Smith Valley, the team has high hopes of a return trip to the postsea-son with better results.

“I feel we could have a pretty good team,” said MHS coach Danielle Wilson. “We have some good experience and a couple of fresh-men that played with me last year when I coached the junior high team. The biggest thing is to get all the girls on the same page. I want them out there helping and encourag-ing each other. There is a lot of learning right now.”

Va Draunidalo, Lydia Northrup and Andrea Smart are the senior leaders that Wilson will look to lead the Lady Bulldogs. All three have been with the program since their freshmen year. Draunidalo is one of the top hitters for McDermitt.

“Va has really come in and taken the leadership role to heart,” Wilson said. “She is the most vocal out on the floor and the girls respond to what she has to say. She has a killer instinct and is very demanding of others.”

Northrup and Smart will be looked at as hitters as well, but both girls have a strong serve that can give opposing teams fits. A duo of juniors are back for the Lady Bulldogs in Megan Sam and Dacey Horn. Sam will be up at the net as a hitter, while Horn will be the setter in the Lady Bulldogs’ 5-1 formation.

“We have a smaller group of kids this year,” Wilson said. “You will see some girls in different spots on the floor, so I can utilize them in the best position possible. There are girls that can play multiple spots. Right now, it looks like we are just going with one setter. I am giving the green light to everyone to hit the ball. If we can hit and block con-sistently that will be a big plus for us. I think we will be strong servers once again.”

Adrie Smart and Morissa Bitt, both sophomores, return and saw playing time as freshmen. Precious Masters and Sienna Aster are new the team as freshmen.

”The chemistry is good right

now,” said the coach. “The older girls are tak-ing the younger players under their wing and teaching them. With the small group we have, it’s going to take everyone to contribute.”

The Lady Bulldogs open their season today at home against Round Mountain in a non-conference match at 2 p.m. McDer-mitt will make the return trip back to Round Mountain in October.

McDermitt also has a home-home series with Crane, Ore., and will travel to Crane twice, once for a single match and the other occasion will be a tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs will play seven of their final nine matches on the road, including the final five. McDermitt plays its final home matches on Oct. 2-3, against Wells and Owyhee, respectively.

Wells, Owyhee and Eureka claimed the top three spots in the Division IV East a season ago. McDermitt has hopes of getting back into the playoff hunt.

The top four teams out of the Division IV East and West advance to the regional cham-pionships in western Nevada on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7. The state champion-ships will be Nov. 13-14 in Las Vegas.

“Our goal is to get back to the playoffs,” Wilson said. “If we can play to our ability, the girls are good enough to do that. I am excited to get the season started. The girls are excited and ready to go. We did a lot of fundraising over the summer and got new uniforms.”

MCDERMITT — The McDermitt High School football team put on its full pads for the first time this season at the beginning of the week.

Hopefully, the Bulldogs will be able to do that for the next two months. McDermitt is in a number crunch right now with its roster in single digits to play 8-man football this year. The hope is that a few more boys decide to come out and play and the season is not canceled.

“We are up in the air (if we are going to play) right now,” said long-time coach Richard Egan. “We are going to wait and we should be gaining one more player that should put us at nine. We will see what happens when school starts. We thought we had five kids that would be playing, but they are not and that is hurting us right now. They talked about playing and changed their minds. That is their decision.”

McDermitt finished the 2014 season at 2-6, with wins over Pyramid Lake and Owyhee. The Bulldogs were competitive

in match-ups against Wells and Carlin, but that core group of players has graduated or decided not to play this season.

Devin Vigil, Troy McKee, Duane Horse and Jace Ramsey are the lone returners from 2014. Cauy Crutcher, Kyon Egan, Robert Pope and Ryder Little join the Bulldogs this year.

“These guys are out here and willing to work and it’s a bummer for the whole pro-gram,” Egan said. “I don’t want to start over and go to an independent schedule. That will be tough on the program and we will have to find games. We were lucky to get four games the last time we were independent. It’s frustrating right now. If we were to play right now and suffer any injuries, our season would be over. We just don’t have the kids to fill the positions.”

The goal is to get to about a dozen players and the season will be a go. The Bulldogs were scheduled to take part in the Carlin scrimmage last Saturday, but the lack of numbers forced them to stay home.

As of now, the season-opener against Pyr-amid Lake on Saturday, Sept. 5, in McDer-mitt is still a go according to the coach. The Bulldogs’ only other home game is set for Friday, Oct. 2, versus Wells. McDermitt will play four games on the road, Jordan Valley (Sept. 11), Owyhee (Sept. 25), Eureka (Oct. 10) and Carlin (Oct. 16).

“Once we get going I have told the kids that they will be playing two or three spots,” Egan said. “They are going to be on the field for the entire 48 minutes. We are going to have to condition hard and push ourselves. We have the kids that want to work. We have to go with what we have. We don’t have a choice. I am here for the kids. I have been here before and want to see it continue. We just want to play.”
