18Souderton Area School District Community Education Fall 2017

Volume IIII, Issue 2Fall 2017

The 2016-2017 school year was an exciting year of creativity and innovation prompted by the implementation of SASDNext throughout the district. SASDNext, a five-year plan, was developed by a district wide committee of teachers, administrators, community members and students in an effort to transform teaching and learning. In fact, my opening day message to teachers asked them to reimagine their teaching and to engage our students to be collaborative lifelong learners. As school began, all middle school students received a Chromebook as part of the one-to-one program. Providing access to 21st century tools enabled teachers to extend learning beyond the classroom while preparing students for the future. To organize the creation and sharing of new content, the district launched use of Schoology, a learning management system accessible to students, teachers, and parents.Throughout the school year teachers redefined what a learning environment could look like. Inspired by the Classroom Design Contest, a partnership between Souderton Area School District and the Indian Valley Education Foundation. Low tables, high desks, alternate seating, lighting, and curtains helped to make the classroom an inviting place where all learners can find comfort and success. As winter approached, George Couros, author of Innovator’s Mindset, energized teachers to foster the natural curiosity of our students, guiding them to define their own learning and continue as forward thinking leaders. George encouraged teachers to embrace change and become professionally networked outside the classroom through social media as a way of growing their own learning.Based on experiences from the first half of the year, makerspaces and break-out boxes began to pop up in buildings, curriculum revisions were in process, and a K-12 STEM committee was formed. Technology became a core element of instruction as teachers

developed lessons and delivered content giving real world application through

virtual means. These first steps in

From the SuperintendentSouderton’s SASDNext journey have generated enthusiasm and excitement establishing a strong foundation for continued transformation of teaching and learning over this next school year.Thank you for your support of Souderton Area Community Education. SASD 17-18 Budget ApprovedOn June 22, the School Board approved the 2017-18 Final Budget of $124.4 million. Despite rising mandated expenditures for contributions to the retirement system and charter school tuition, the Board delivered a budget with only a 0.5% real estate tax increase. It marked five consecutive years of tax increases less than 1%. The budget continues the District’s investment in high quality educational programming and advances the efforts of the SASD Next initiative. For more information about the budget, please visit the District’s website: (www.soudertonsd.org/district/finance/budget).

Preliminary earthwork was done over the summer and the landscape is rapidly changing at the facility. The playground equipment has been removed to make way for the addition which will include a new gym/cafeteria and replacement of modular classrooms with permanent rooms. The existing cafeteria will be converted into the library, more parking will be added and the playground will be re-located on the updated campus. Foundations and evidence of a newly constructed facility will soon be evident for all to see. Stay tuned for further updates as progress continues.
