and are working hard to prepare students for college and career. 800+ 9th graders have already experienced their annual FISH camp, and we are already preparing for our first “big test” administration scheduled for October 19th (more on that later).

We hope that you find this newsletter informative and helpful as you help your student navigate the next few months at Hays High School. The fall semester is a busy one… and we want to help make it successful.

Exam Exemptions “We want to reward our hard working students for excellent academic performance and good attendance.”- David Pierce

We are excited to offer our students the opportunity to exempt their semester exams this year. Students who are enrolled in on-level or Pre-AP courses and earn a semester average of 85 or better and those students who are enrolled in AP courses and earn a grade of 90 or better are half-way there to earning an exemption! All that is left is for them to meet the attendance and discipline requirement. For more information our exemption policy, please visit www.hayscisd.net/hhs and click on the exam exemption information link on the left side of the page.

PSAT/SAT TESTING Our Sophomore and Junior class will be participating in the PSAT test administration on October 19th. This test serves several purposes. It helps us identify those students who are academically prepared for advanced level courses but are not already enrolled in the courses, it helps students project how they might perform on the SAT test, and also identifies students who qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.

Our graduating class of 2017 will be taking the SAT on this day as well.

Student Safety Trumps Convenience More than 2,900 students and staff navigate the hallways and parking lots of Hays High School every day! The physical layout of our campus presents challenges as it relates to the safety of those of us who call this “home” during the day.

We need the help of our parents to ensure that we are able to provide our students and staff with the safest campus possible. You can help in the following ways:

• Please use caution and drive safely when dropping students off in the morning and picking them up in the afternoon. The designated parent drop off/pick up area is on the North side of Joe Graham Gym along the red curb. Please DO NOT drop them off directly in front of the school. The building will open at 8:00am so it is recommended that you not drop students off earlier than this as they will be unsupervised and will have no access to shelter in inclement weather.

• Please do not make deliveries directly to students during the school day. All deliveries (including lunches) must be brought into the main office by the parent. Lunch deliveries can be left on the table in the foyer for students to pick up during the passing period. Students should not be meeting anyone at their vehicle to pick up items. We must ensure that we enforce our campus visitor policy because it is in place to protect the safety and welfare of our students.

Please join us on Monday, October 3, 2016 for our Meet the Teacher night. We will begin the evening by joining for a parent information session at 6:30pm. After the meeting, parents will be invited to visit with their student’s teachers by following their student’s schedule.
