Welcome to A Christmas Affair 2014 Christmas in the City! This years event marks the 39th year The Junior League of Austin members have produced this premiere shopping event kicking off the holiday season in Austin. Since its first year the event has grown from 41, mostly local, merchants to an event with more than 200 merchants featuring products from around the world!

Just as our city has grown and changed, so has A Christmas Affair and so has The Junior League of Austin. Our membership has grown and is more diverse. As an organization of women we have adapted to the changing roles our members have in society and we have continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of our community and our members. Weve grown and evolved while keeping our purpose focused.

Our members are dedicated to improving our community through voluntarism, which, in turn, develops remarkable women leaders who serve in our community. In my view, this model of membership, voluntarism and training creates a perfect, infinite cycle for every action given, there is a benefit gained, thereby creating a uniquely talented, trained and effective community leader.

Each year the A Christmas Affair committee sets out to create a uniquely themed and decorated holiday market intermingled with special events for kids of all ages and this year is no exception. I proudly proclaim, without hesitation, they have delivered! So, as you shop the market and experience the events that are A Christmas Affair Christmas in the City consider thisThe Junior League of Austin is an organization run entirely by volunteers. EMPOWERING YOUNG WOMEN ACROSS AUSTINBY ANNE PETERSThe Junior League of Austin (JLA) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. -JLA Mission Statement

The League does not exist solely for the development of its members, but also for the development of the potential of women throughout our community. Three community programs are particularly important in meeting this mission: Con Mi MADRE; GENAustin; and Junior Achievement of Central Texas.

DEVELOPING THE POTENTIAL OF WOMEN: CON MI MADRECon Mi MADRE is an organization devoted to providing educational and social support for Latina girls to prepare for post-secondary education. The most unique aspect of the program is that it involves both students and their mothers, recognizing that parental involvement often determines whether a student will achieve success. The importance of parental involvement cannot be overstated.

Con Mi MADRE will be awarding five $1,000 scholarships to qualified students who complete the organizations GRAD (Girls Reaching A Dream) program for college students. In addition to providing 16 volunteers, the League contributes $500 towards these scholarships.

The scholarships support the community by defraying the expenses of higher education for the young women who have stuck with and completed the Con Mi MADRE program. Every scholarship dollar is a dollar that a young woman does not have to borrow from her future self to fund her education. Scholarships also recognize a students hard work and demonstrate our confidence in her potential. We believe that our investment will strengthen her own self-confidence.

Through its support of Con Mi Madre, The Junior League of Austin directly and positively influences the realization of the limitless potential of young women in the community.

IMPROVING THE COMMuNITY: GENAuSTINThe GEN in GENAustin stands for Girls Empowerment Network. Their purpose is to support and guide girls to make wise choices as they navigate the unique pressures of girlhood. They do this through various programs that give girls the opportunity to discuss body image, develop media literacy and foster healthy relationships. One of their programs, clubGEN, is an after-school program for girls in the fourth through eighth grades. The girls are surrounded

The League does not exist solely for the development of its members, but for the development of the potential of women throughout our community.

    Con Mi MADRE Students

by positive role models and they discuss diverse, relevant, and significant topics like bullying, healthy relationships, fitness and career exploration. Starting these discussions at this early age will ensure these girls continue them for the rest of their lives and with following generations of young people.

GENAustin also holds the statewide annual We Are Girls Conference, for girls in the third through twelfth grade and the adults who care about them. The conference features speakers and workshops addressing issues such as social media, financial literacy and enhancing parent-daughter communication.

GENAustin conducts workshops through the 180 Program. These workshops address challenges faced by many girls today and additionally offer programs for girls who are either involved with or at a high-risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system. Girls who are empowered to make healthy choices and who are given the tools to seek positive relationships with themselves and with others become girls who grow into leaders and are members of a strong and loving community. These programs not only positively affect the girls in the programs, but also the girls and boys with whom they interact. This is what The Junior League of Austin seeks for our community.

EFFECTIVE ACTION AND LEADERSHIP: JuNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF CENTRAL TExASJunior Achievement is the worlds largest organization dedicated to the education of elementary, middle, and high school students in real-world business, job and financial skills. The stated mission of Junior Achievement of Central Texas is to educate, and inspire young people the value of free enterprise, business, and economics in order to improve the quality of their lives.

In elementary school, the goal is to broaden childrens horizons and open their eyes to the possibilities, including entrepreneurial possibilities, for their future. The skills they learn will help them be confident in their choices and the decision making process that gets them there.

Junior Achievement recognizes that middle school is a crossroads for many kids. At this age, some students dont see the connection between school work and future success. These students are likely to give up or drop out. Junior Achievement teaches the link between school achievement and real world success the link between school lessons and real world business concepts. For students in high school the programs focus on job readiness, financial management and business or career guidance.

Junior Achievement is effective. According to a study conducted by the organization, 92% of Junior Achievement alumni reported that being a JA student positively affected their future. Junior Achievement teaches young people leadership skills. The same study found that over 80% of former Junior Achievement alumni say their participation strengthened problem solving abilities, decision making, critical thinking and interpersonal communication skills. Through The Junior League of Austins volunteer and monetary support, the League contributes greatly to building future leaders and enabling these students success in our community.

The JLAs FIT program meets another critical nutrition need in our community. According to the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, our state ranks among the worst states in the nation for hunger, child hunger and obesity. One in every four children in Texas experience food insecurity and multiple studies show that children who are hungry do not excel in school. FIT Chair, Deanna Schobey, works with her committee in Del Valle schools to help provide backpacks of nutritious food to kids on Fridays, filling the nutritional void

HEALTHY FOOD FOR FEEDING MINDS AND GROWING BODIESBY JUL IE BERGSTROM

The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is committed to ensuring that children have access to nutritious foods to feed their minds and grow strong bodies. When a child is hungry, he cannot concentrate in school, which can lead to poor performance. To addresss the hunger challenge, the JLA partners with community agencies such as Mothers Milk Bank and Sustainable Food Center to help grow our childrens minds and bodies. In addition, the Leagues own program FIT - Food In Tummies provides weekly nutrition during the school year to kids in two Del Valle ISD elementary schools.

Before being placed at Mothers Milk Bank, I had no idea that donor breast milk was even a thing, said League member Noel Nielsen, My time at the Milk Bank has raised my awareness in regards to the necessity of donor milk and donor milk facilities. Noels placement is in the Mothers Milk Bank lab which processes prescribed donor human milk for infants. The milk helps pre-term and medically fragile babies grow and thrive, by providing them special antibodies to fight disease and infection, as well as growth hormones to help them develop. Remarked Noel of her placement, Volunteering saves lives.

Break goat cheese into chunks and toss into salad.

FIT backpacks provide healthy food to fill the weekend nutrition gap

many children face on weekends. Deanna recalls that, Last year Good Friday was scheduled as a make-up day for the weather cancelations. Staff expected attendance numbers to be down. But instead teachers at Hillcrest Elementary found their halls full. The Hillcrest Principal told Deanna, Those kids came to get their FIT bags. They need that food.

During the 2013-2014 school year, the FIT program provided approximately 48,000 bags of food, delivered in 1,500 backpacks, for 32 weeks. The packs delivered weekly to Baty and Hillcrest Elementary includes food for the weekend, bilingual healthy recipe cards, and nutrition tips to be shared with the students family. Said Deanna about her experience with FIT, The opportunity to truly make a difference has been life changing for me.

Sustainable Food Center is another project where League members work to cultivate a healthy community by strengthening the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food. Sustainable Food Center envisions a food-secure community where all children and adults grow, share, and prepare healthy, local food. When asked about what drew JLA volunteer Audrey Lopez to her placement she said, Helping independent, organic, and local farmers sell their high quality, nutritious food is very satisfying. Gatherings like the Farmers Market are the fabric of our community.

A CHRISTMAS AFFAIR:CREATING A COMMUNITY OF POSSIBILITIESBY ANNE PETERS

When I think of A Christmas Affair, I think of:

the decorations and music, which make the shopping experience feel a bit magical Jennifer Jackson, community member.

a cornucopia of shopping options! Kelly Lowe, community member.

A Christmas Affair (ACA) is widely known as a giant holiday market, a fun place to shop with friends, and an event kicking off the holiday season here in Austin. Shoppers - 6,000 of them each day - come from all over Texas to a single destination where they can find treats for themselves and unique gifts for others. Its a chance for local and small businesses to show off their wares. The beautiful decorations elevate the experience to something that Austinites and tourists cannot find anywhere else. Even Santa Claus makes a special preseason appearance to meet children for brunch and photos.

There is no denying that A Christmas Affair is an amazingly successful fundraiser for The Junior League of Austin, raising over $750,000 annually to support the Central Texas community.

While you can shop elsewhere for holiday gifts, remember that your support of A Christmas Affair means you are supporting positive change in our community.

    FROM THE SUSTAINING PRESIDENT

    Sustaining President, MariBen Ramsey

    Thank you for your support of A Christmas Affair! With more than 2,400 total members 1200+ provisional and active members and 1,200+ sustaining members - The Junior League of Austin relies on the community to help the League deliver on its mission: to promote voluntarism, to develop the potential of women and to improve our community. Thanks to you, The Junior League of Austin provides volunteers and funding to: local non profits; to teachers for educational projects;

and to low-income school children who wouldnt have enough to eat over weekends if it werent for the Leagues FIT - Food In Tummies program. Sustainers are members of the League ages 40 and above who have graduated from active membership obligations. We maintain our affiliation to help mentor, guide, advise, engage and learn from our entire League membership community. Since The Junior League of Austin was founded in 1934, its members have contributed time, talent and treasure to enhance the Austin community. From bringing the first professional social worker to Austin, to founding non-profit organizations including the Ronald McDonald House (the Leagues 50th Anniversary gift to Austin) and Con Mi MADRE, to innovation in response to community needs (see the FIT program above!). The Leagues members have taken their League experiences and serve Austin beyond their League workAustin has benefited from hundreds of League members tackling community issues, spearheading needed efforts and serving as civic leaders.

Your support of the The Junior League of Austin is an investment that has an exponential return. Youll find it all across our communityfrom the children who receive coats through Coats for Kids or weekend backpacks of food for kids who would otherwise go hungry to many of the leaders serving on boards and actively engaged in our community.
