ACADEMIC REGALIA As the faculty enter the auditorium you will notice their academic regalia. The history of academic dress dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries when most students and faculty were also clergy so they wore long, black gowns similar to clerical dress. The style of the academic gown distinguishes graduates by the degree they have earned. Bachelor’s degree gowns are plain black with long pointed sleeves.
Master’s degree gowns are slightly fuller and have longer, closed and square cut sleeves. Doctoral gowns are more full cut with bell shaped sleeves. They are typically faced down the front with velvet and have three velvet bars on the sleeves. Often the velvet is black but it may be in the color of the wearer’s academic discipline. Doctoral and Master’s hoods are lined with silk in the colors of the University conferring the doctoral degree. Hoods have long tails. Legend has it that the long tail of the hood provided a pocket hanging down the back of the faculty person so students could drop the appropriate fee for teaching without the teacher being able to see how much (or how little) was being paid. Some of our students are also wearing academic cords or stoles around their necks. For example, students of color often choose to wear a Kente cloth. The vibrant colors of the Kente cloth symbolize strong family values, collective work and responsibility, and cooperation. The cardinal and gold cords represent graduating with distinction. To graduate with distinction the student must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or better. The white cords represent graduating with honors. To graduate with honors a student must be a member of the University Honors Program. Membership means they must complete a planned program of study designed to provide greater depth and breadth of scholarship than the regular curriculum. Blue and gold cords represent membership in Alpha Kappa Psi, a professional business fraternity.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS The first business courses at Iowa State University were offered as Business Engineering in the Department of Economics in the 1920s. Business Engineering underwent a number of name changes in the 1920s and 1930s before the Department of Industrial Administration was established in 1955. Although the word business appeared in the department’s goals, it was left out of the department title, as it was unsure at the time how a business education fit into the Science with Practice motto of the institution. In 1959, the department became a part of the new College of Science and Humanities. The 1960s saw significant growth, with a faculty that increased in numbers from 10 to 21 and majors from 375 to 725. In 1969, the department moved into its longtime home in Carver Hall and continued to add faculty and students during the 1970s. In 1980, the School of Business Administration was formed. The school became a college in 1984, and the College of Business awarded its first degrees to 205 graduates that fall.
The MBA program was launched a year later, and accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business was granted in 1991. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the college added undergraduate majors, graduate programs, and partnerships like the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. The year 2004 marked two major milestones: the college celebrated its 20th anniversary, and also moved into its new home, the 111,000-square foot, state-of-the-art Gerdin Business Building. In the fall of 2009, the college launched its new Ph.D. Program in Business and Technology in the midst of its 25th anniversary celebration. The College of Business had a fall 2013 enrollment of 3,687 undergraduate, 206 master’s, and 24 Ph.D. students. Information from History of the Industrial Administration Department 1955-1980, by W.H. Thompson,
Ph.D., and from university records.
