Leading theWay inSustainability Efforts…

Triathlon Club President Andrew Shanks

Georgia State University’s Student Recreation Center hasrecently been certified using the Green Globes greenbuilding rating system for Continual Improvement of ExistingBuildings (CIEB). A first for the Georgia State campus,Green Globes is a revolutionary green building guidanceand assessment program that offers an effective, practicaland affordable way to advance the overall environmentalperformance and sustainability of commercial buildings.Based on its recognized and proven assessment protocol, the system ensures that environmental impacts arecomprehensively assessed on a point scale in multiplecategories (energy, indoor environment, site, water, resources, emissions and project/environmental management). Since2004, Green Globes has built a strong presence as anationally recognized rating and assessment system. Its webapplications have been recognized in legislation in 25 statesand have assessed, improved and certified 130+ buildingsin the United States. We are the first existing Universityrecreation center in the country to receive Green Globescertification (proudly, 3 out of a possible 4 Globes in therating system). This means we demonstrate leadership indesign and delivery of energy and environmentally sensitivebuildings and a commitment to continual improvement.

Since the Student Recreation Center opened in 2001, wehave continually striven to reduce our environmental impactwith no specific green building rating or assessmentplanned. Environmental stewardship has been a keyoperating strategy to both reduce our carbon footprint andreduce operating costs. Buildings rated or certified GreenGlobes are verified to use less energy, conserve naturalresources and emit fewer pollutants in the form ofgreenhouse gases, airborne particulates, liquid effluents andsolid waste.

We continue to lead the way on campus and across thecountry for existing University recreation centers in oursustainability efforts.

~Scott Levin

What do people say about the Touch the EarthChallenge Program?“The ultimate proof of the success of this program waswalking into class the next day and looking at all myclassmates in a completely different light. They were no longerjust people filling a chair in the classroom, they were now myfriends, people I can talk to, trust and depend on.”

~Lindsey William, MGS 3400

“Overall, I enjoyed the Ropes Course and wish that otherstudents could have the same opportunity to participate in it. Ithelped me to build new relationships with my classmates andlearn to trust people more. Also, I was able to climb trees andlearned how to walk on ropes. I can tell now my friends andfamily that I do other stuff besides study while attendingGeorgia State.”
