Welcome to the UW Bothell MBA Quarterly Newsletter!

I hope you will enjoy our new format and delivery method. I view this as a way to stay connected to students and alumni and to keep you informed. For now we will publish this newsletter quarterly. However, on this Word Press site, the calendar of events and job opportunities will be updated regularly so please check back often. As you all know we lost our dear friend, Don Whitney, in September. There is more about Don in this newsletter, however, I wanted to mention that Don was a huge advocate of “networking”, but more than that, he was a greater advocate of “connecting”. What I learned from Don, especially over this past year, is the difference. I hope, as we all move forward, that you will see the difference as well. Many of you have already described to me how Don “connected”. It may have been in an off-moment phone call, a brief visit and hand-shake at the classroom door or an email introducing you to another student or alumni but the connection was made and it was noticed. I hope you will all, like me, take up the challenge to further the connections. Take the time to go beyond the art of networking and really connect with a fellow student or alum that you haven’t talked to for a while. It can make a difference.

Please mark your calendars now for Friday evening, April 12, 2013 to join us for a special Alumni/Student Networking and Reunion Evening. Network (and connect) with UWB MBA/MMgt Alumni and Students (all are invited) and celebrate the Reunion of the MBA Class of 2003 (10 yrs) and MBA Class of 2008 (5 years)! We will keep you informed as the date draws near. Students, I will begin registering 2nd year students this week for Winter Quarter. I will register 1st year students the week of November 19th.

IN REMEMBRANCE ~

Don Whitney

1948-2012 Don Whitney, longtime manager of graduate services at the University Of Washington Bothell School Of Business, died September 11 of pancreatic cancer. He was 64.

Don was a devoted champion of students throughout his life and dedicated thirty-two years of service to university students at his beloved Oregon State University and the

University of Washington. He served the MBA program at UW Bothell for the last twelve years, helping the program grow and more than double its size, all the while nurturing a strong bond between the school, students and alumni.

Professor Gowri Shankar remembered Don as a “dear friend and wonderful colleague who was a ‘stalwart champion’ to students of all ages. While mourning for Don, Gowri came across an article about him in the Portland Tribune that you might

enjoy reading. Gowri said “This article brought out to me Don's ability to see light in the midst of darkness and his remarkable capacity to appreciate life in all its glories and vagaries even in his last days”. Whitney joined the UW Bothell Business Program in 2000 as the first manager of the MBA program. Before coming to UW Bothell, he held advising and administrative student service positions on the UW Seattle campus, working in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, School of Social Work and the College of Forest Resources. A gifted athlete, Whitney was a member of the 1967 Oregon State Beavers “Giant Killers” football team that beat three top teams in one season. At Oregon State, he was the first academic counselor in the athletic department, leading change in support of student-athletes that led to higher graduation rates.

A Prior to 1980, he was a radio newsman and taught part-time in the OSU Department

of Religious Studies and Honors Program. Whitney had a bachelor's degree in political science from OSU (1971) and a master's degree in religion from the School of Theology at Claremont (1976) in California. Don was a gentle man but a fierce, protective and compassionate champion of all students; they reciprocated his kindness in many ways with their lifelong friendships and warmth for him. A “Celebration of Life” was held on September 15, 2012. This was an uplifting and inspirational experience for all who attended. Don was indeed a member of the Oregon State Beavers “Giant Killers” football team but he was also a giant among men, leaving behind a legacy of making a difference in the lives of others. As Professor Shankar said, “We lost a dear friend and a wonderful colleague and our students of all ages and degrees lost a stalwart champion. He will be sorely missed!” Don leaves behind his spouse, Beth, and his son, Colin, and all of us at UW Bothell who had the pleasure of working with him over the years.

The Don Whitney Endowed MBA Scholarship has been established. This scholarship will live in perpetuity and has the potential to help many MBA students over the years. Sports and Recreation Complex: The Sports and Recreation Complex will consist of a 2.5 acre (100,000 square foot) complex including a shared soccer and softball field, tennis courts, a basketball court and a sand volley ball court. The Sports and Recreation Complex will serve the existing student body by providing enhanced opportunities for students and recreational activities. The construction is anticipated to be completed by October 2012. UW Bothell 3 Science and Academic Building: The new building will house programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). It is expected to produce 1,500 construction-related jobs, more than 1,000 students and an increase in the number of STEM graduates in the Puget Sound region. The construction area will be fenced and under construction from July 2012 through July 2014. Watch the construction with the UWB3 Webcam! Sarah Simonds Green Conservatory: The stunning greenhouse and conservatory, which will contain a classroom, botanical laboratory and exhibit space, will be located at the north end of the campus wetlands and serve as a working educational center for UW Bothell. Dr. Gordon Green, the project’s benefactor, wanted to give back to the community where his family took root. His vision was to create a conservatory and greenhouse that’s both accessible to the public and dedicated to the legacy of his pioneering Bothell family.

Graduate Commons! The primary purpose of the Graduate Commons is to support graduate education at UW Bothell by providing a

comfortable drop‐in space for relaxation, study, and collaboration. The Graduate Commons is designed as a hub for graduate student life, enhancing academic, research, and social interactions.

The Graduate Commons is on the first floor of the Truly House, located at 18140 110th Ave NE. Graduate Commons hours: Monday through Friday 3pm – 9am (the following day), and weekends open 24 hours. The Graduate Commons includes:

End of the Year Celebration December 18, 2012

Who: MBA cohorts, faculty, alumni What: 2012 MBAA End of the Year Celebration When: 6PM Tuesday December 18th, 2012 Where: Urban Enoteca - 4130 1st AVE South, Seattle WA 98134 Why: Why not? Last year, approximately 100 people attended the e. With the change in venue and the push we are making, we should easily surpass 120. Food is included in the price of the ticket. A keg of beer has been donated and a fellow cohort member in the LMBA class is getting a keg of wine at cost. Hard Alcohol and mixed cocktails are available for purchase at the bar. This will be a great time to celebrate the holiday season along with the completion of the 2012 fall quarter. It will also be a great chance to meet some of the alumni who have successfully completed this journey before us. Early bird tickets are $25 for each student/alumni and $25 for their plus one. “I moved to Washington three years ago and have found so many things about it to enjoy. There are so many activities offered like summer outdoor events, arts, street fairs, and music that I can easily say that I am never bored. In addition, although I still root for my San Diego Padres and Chargers, I have adopted the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks as my home teams. I also love getting out to UW games of all kinds and seeing the school spirit and exciting contests. Having played trumpet through college, I enjoy seeing the UW marching band in action at these games. Go Huskies!”

“I have three daughters. The twins are the same age as the UW Bothell Business Program which is now considered by my family as the triplet given the time and attention that I devote to the program! The Twins are currently freshman at Stanford. My younger one loves to fly gliders and is with the Civil Air Patrol. I love to read, consider myself a bit of a polymath, and used to spend time browsing good second hand book shops.”

Deborah Medlar Professor of Business Law and Ethics, School of Business University of Washington Bothell “Five years after Deborah and Jerry were married, they decided to adopt children, and were on a wait list for Korean children. Then their adoption agency started an adoption program in Thailand, and sent a picture of a 2 year old little Thai girl in the Red Cross Orphanage. Deborah and Jerry decided to adopt that little girl, and were told it would take 2 to 4 months to bring that little girl home to America. But, alas, it took 18 months for all of the paper work to clear. So, on June 1986 Jerry and Deborah went to Bangkok, and met with the Thai Red Cross Board, including Thai Royalty, and were approved to take Allison home on July 4, 1986. Two years later, after another lengthy wait, Jerry, Deborah and Allison returned to Thailand to pick up Nick, a son, then 3 years old. They had been given a picture of Nick when he was 1 ½ years old. Then later that year they were told he might be mentally handicapped and were given the opportunity to adopt other little boys in that same orphanage. They stuck with Nick. They brought him home on Deborah’s birthday, which because of the date line was a 39 hour birthday..24 hours of it spent on planes, including one that was struck by lightning. Nick actually turned out to have been frightened of the strangers when he was tested. Far from mentally handicapped, he turned out to be a chatterbox. Chattering in Thai when he arrived, he soon stopped talking at all. Six weeks later he started talking again…in full sentences, in English. He hasn’t stopped talking since…yada, yada. Today Allison lives in San Diego, which makes for wonderful winter time visits, and Nick and his wife life in North Kirkland, in between Deborah and Jerry’s home and UWB. Deborah’s only regret is that neither Allison nor Nick’s wife like to shop for clothes or shoes. Nick doesn’t even know what a mall is. He lives only for Cabela’s.”

Is now the Methods and Process Analyst at Boeing, previously working as the Financial Service Specialist at DSHS.

I was hired on July 20, 2012 as a Methods and Process Analyst. My job consists of scheduling jobs for the 787

Dreamliner, primarily the wings section. On a daily basis, I update bar charts to reflect the job schedule. I also

create visibility reports such as costs per job, jobs burn rate, performance chart and behind schedule report.

For behind schedule jobs, I would develop a recovery plan each week.

I worked at The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) as a Financial Service Specialist prior to

working at Boeing. I originally had a solid plan for where I wanted to go within the organizations and

obtaining an MBA would solidify my skills and set a foundation for future success. So I enrolled at UWB. But

after working at DSHS for two years, I realized that my job does not offer the challenge that I wanted. The

problem was that the job was becoming easier and I was getting too comfortable and complacent. Although

opportunities for advancements were there, I felt that I would grow out of any new positions and would again

become stagnant. So I applied at Boeing and received an offer within weeks. So far, a lot work and not

enough time to finish it; exactly what I was asking for.

In many ways, pursuing my MBA played a major role in my new job. The program at UWB provided a vast

network of professions that provided coaching and career advices at a personal level. I was able to get

insights on various positions within each company that I was considering working for. My peers gave me

advices on interviews, career paths, and opportunities in various fields. One of my peers spent hours refining

my resume. In the end, It really didn’t take me long to choose the company and position I wanted.

I am also pleased to see that the topics taught in the UWB MBA program is relevant to my current job

description; what I learned so far in school I have put in practice at work. Pursuing an MBA was one of the

best choices I’ve made. The reward doesn’t come from getting a higher paying job, even though I was offer a

higher than normal salary for having completed one year of grad school, but rather the networking

opportunities that is made available. Sure the academic side added values in terms of technical skills, but it’s

the people that I met throughout the program (peers, guess speakers, professors) that open new

opportunities for me currently and I am sure they will keep the door open for me in the future as well. I’ve

learned a lot from my peers, guess speakers and professor and I am thankful for that. This minds me of a blog

I’ve read from Sandeep Krishnamurthy. The blog explained the how important networking is to one's

career/goals; he is absolutely right.
