Since 2002, the Bronx Forum has been a joint venture between Hostos CommunityCollege and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York’s Commission onIntergroup Relations and Community Concerns / CAUSE-NY. The Forum convenesprofessional, lay, community and faith-based leadership of the Bronx, representingits diversity. These leaders come from the worlds of education, business, social serv-ice, government, health care as well as many other walks of life.

The Bronx Forum will conduct a series of community wide roundtable discus-sions, seminars, workshops and an annual conference to empower community andfaith-based leaders with the community organizing skills needed to support andserve the Bronx and its array of culturally diverse neighborhoods.

Stay tuned for the Center for Bronx Non-Profits (CBNP), which

will be launching in 2011! CBNP will serve as a convener of

Bronx non-profits and will offer professional development and

networking opportunities

to help strengthen commu-

nity and faith-based agencies

around the borough. CBNP will also over-

see several projects including:

(1) We Are The Bronx Fellowship (WATB) is anine-month professional development andnetworking opportunity for Bronx-basednon-profits, government agencies, and community and faith-based leaders.Fellows apply for the program during the summer and participate in two month-ly meetings based around core competency skills and action-based committees.

(2) The Bronx Forum provides free and low-cost trainings for non-profit, community,and faith-based professionals looking to enhance their skills, network, navigatelocal systems, maximize resources, and further professional development.

(3) Non-Profit Certificate Track at Hostos offers one-day seminars and certificatesprograms for non-profit professionals looking to increase their skills in areassuch as fundraising and grant writing, volunteer management, social media,accounting, program evaluation and more.

(4) The Bronx Community Coalition is made up of Bronx-based non-profits, govern-ment agencies, and community and faith-based organizations looking to worktogether to improve the borough.

Studentswill learn test-taking strategies, build reading com-prehension skills, and study the 5 GED contentareas. Topics covered will include learning how toread visuals; use of a Casio fx-260 calculator; andhow to fill out alternate format questions on themathematics section of the exam.

This course is designed for students who need toimprove their reading, writing and math skills. Theclass will focus on strengthening reading compre-hension skills and developing basic writing skills(grammar, sentence structure, paragraph organiza-tions, etc). In addition, this course offers basicmathematics instruction to help students practicearithmetic and build problem-solving skills.

certificate, or RN, LPN licenses to the basic procedures used for obtaining blood

from veins and capillaries. It will provide skill building for those who are already

Standard precautions, collecting blood specimens for diagnosis and treatment, performing cap-

Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervisionof a dentist, to administer intraoral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxideanalgesia to a patient who is 18 years of age or older. Hostos Community

College’s Department of Dental Hygiene is offering a continuing education coursefor certification in Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia.

This course, in compliance with the new law in New York, will facilitate the New York Statelicensed dental hygienist to apply for a restricted certificate in local infiltration anesthe-sia/nitrous oxide analgesia. The program will be comprised of lectures (30 hours) and hands-on clinical application (15 hours) under faculty supervision.

Upon the successful completion of this course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply forcertification through the New York State Education Department.

Participants who do not meet clinical competency for local anesthesia and nitrous oxide expe-riences will not be permitted to challenge the written certification exam and will be requiredto retake the entire course at their own expense.

Students will be provided with a CD Rom with all power point presentations andwritten presentations. This course will be taught by Dr. James King.

Participants will serve as patients for each other during the clinical portion of the course. If you areunwilling or unable to be a patient please do not register for this course. HOSTOS CURRICULUMThe following new curriculum is designed to meet the State’s new criteria and will provide the appli-cant with the required 350 hours of “Education and Training.” Upon successful completion of thistraining, the student will be awarded the Hostos Community College’s Continuing Education andProfessional Studies Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor Certificate. This Certification indicatesthat the student has completed the education and training requirements. The student is then referredto as being “CASAC eligible,” requiring only the necessary experience to sit for the examination.

Session Guarantee:Bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances may cause the cancellation of a class session.For bad weather cancellation information, call the Continuing Education Department at 718-518-6656, or Public Safety Office at 718-518-6888. We guarantee that the number of sessionsand/or number of hours specified for each course will be given.

Refund/Withdrawal:Request for a refund must be submitted in writing together with a copy of the registration receipt.Your refund will be mailed within three weeks of submission. Lack of attendance does not con-stitute withdrawal and eligibility for a refund. 100% if a class is cancelled by the college.Registration fees are non refundable unless class is cancelled by the College. Refunds will notbe issued after the end of the first day of class.

Course Cancellation:Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. When courses are cancelled, students may transferto another course or receive a full refund. It is the student’s responsibility to call the day beforeclass starts to confirm if class will or will not meet as scheduled.

Normas y ProcedimientosContinuing Education & Professional Studies

Descuentos en la matricula:Si se matricula a dos o más clases: 5% de descuento. Para personas mayores (de 62 años deedad o más): 15% de descuento. Para estudiantes, personal y alumnos de HHC que presentenuna tarjeta de identificación valida: 15% de descuento. Solamente se permite un tipo de des-cuento para cada persona.

Matricula y costos:Los estudiantes se matricularán por orden de llegada. Hay una tarifa sin devolución de $20 paracada persona matricularse. Los estudiantes no se consideran oficialmente matriculados hastaque no hayan pagado el precio total. La mayoría de cursos requieren la compra de libros. Losestudiantes deben efectuar el pago total al matricularse. (excepción: Cursos con tarifas de $800o más). No se aceptan cheques personales.

Cambios en el programa:El programa de formación continuada para adultos se reserva el derecho de cancelar cursos,sustituir profesores, cambiar los días, horas y lugares de clases si fuera necesario.

Devolución/ Cancelación:Para recibir una devolución deberá presentar una aplicación de devolución junto con una copiade su recibo de matricula. Le enviaremos su devolución por correo a las tres semanas de haberpresentado su aplicación de devolución. La falta de asistencia no constituye una cancelación niel derecho a reembolso. 100% si Hostos cancela la clase. Las tarifas de matricula no se reem-bolsarán a no ser que Hostos cancele la clase.

No se consideraran reembolsos después del final del primer día de clase.
