The “RoboRangers,” a neighborhood-based team from the Grayson Lakes subdivision of Katy, won the tournament’s First Place Champions Award, given to the team with the highest combined score from all elements of the competition. Made up of 4th and 5th graders and one junior high-aged member, “RoboRangers” was one of the youngest teams in the tournament. Team “CRypton,” from Cinco Ranch Ju-nior High, won the Second Place Champions Award.

In addition to the performance of their robot in head-to-head timed competition, other elements the teams are judged on are their research project and presentation, robot design and programming, and FIRST Core Values. As First and Second Place Cham-pions, both the “RoboRangers” and “CRypton” will be moving on to the next phase of FLL competition.

Throughout the competition process, FLL robotics teams deal with real-world application of science and math concepts, hands-on problem solving as well as honing research and presentation skills. This Katy qualifying tournament, one of 570 held around the world, was the first step in the regional robotics competition process, which culminates in the Southwest (Texas/New Mexico) FLL Champi-onship Tournament. Katy tween/teen talent ShowcaSe competition

Global Arm, Inc. and Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.) hosted the inaugural Katy Tween Teen Talent Showcase Competition on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Zo-ca-lo Lounge (510 Mason Road). Contestants from Katy ISD and Ft. Bend County ISD entered the competition. Along with their parents, they net-worked with many recording industry professionals and received valuable advice on career paths, personality, stage presence and business matters. Lunch was provided courtesy of Chick-fil-A (369 South Mason Road). Music industry packages containing valuable information regarding publishing, copyright, promotions and marketing were given to each contestant.

Two of the contestants performed original numbers and the oth-ers treated the audience to covers by Carrie Underwood, Selena Gomez, Etta James and Jamie Fox. Vocal ability wasn’t the only surprise of the day - two of the contestants performed their num-bers by playing the guitar. The 1st place winner of the showcase was Ms. Reagan Douglas, of Katy, TX. Ms. Douglas performed a song she wrote entitled, Till The End (dedicated to Cancer victims), with her guitar; 2nd place winner was Ms. Skyler Sadler (Katy, TX) who performed At Last by Etta James; and the 3rd place winner was Ms. Kaitlyn Wright (Katy, TX) who performed Change by Car-rie Underwood. Each winner received a trophy, courtesy of Katy Trophies. 2nd and 3rd place winners received a Chili’s Gift Card,

courtesy of Don McGill Toyota. The 1st place winner won a package valued at over $16,000 which consisted of a complimentary studio session at Music World Studios (courtesy of Matthew Knowles), a complimentary photo shoot (courtesy of Jamie LeBlanc Photography), a featured song on Coast 2 Coast Mix tape hosted by Wildman Teddy T (courtesy of Star Quality Entourage) and a featured song on the upcoming film soundtrack starring Snoop Dog (courtesy of Vision World Entertainment).

Door prizes were given away between performances where audience members won gift cards from Chuy’s Restaurant, Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Red Oak Grill, and Perry’s Restaurant. Additional gift cards were given away from Salt Grass Steakhouse and Carino’s (courtesy of Don McGill Toyota). T.E.E.S. will continue to host future events to raise funds for a Teen Community Center in Katy Texas, as well as expand their Teen Table Talk program to other neighborhoods around Houston. Second Saturday Aluminum Can Collection - If you live in the Houston Area, please consider participating in our “Cans for a Cure” Recycling program.

The second Saturday of each month, Keep Kids Connected collects aluminum beverage cans at the Tradition Bank pin Oak Branch location from 9 AM-12 pM. The proceeds from recycling the cans helps fund the purchase of Netbook computers and pediatric cancer research.

Invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to support this recycling pro-gram and donate their aluminum cans to Keep Kids Connected.

Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish

is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission. For more information about Keep Kids Con-nected go to the website, www.keepkidsconnected.org or check out their Facebook page! If you would like to get on the contact list for upcoming events, email [email protected].

The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens and adults has inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club began on Saturday, January 21, 2012 and will continue for six weeks through March 3, 2012 at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system.

Page 23: Falcon_Ranch-Feb12

This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who read 36 books or 6 hours – 6 books per week or 60 minutes per week – will be entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 5, 2012.

A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 20, 2012. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time.

There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or the library branch nearest you.

The next training will be in March. after 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, un-derstand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impact-ing someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. RUOK PROgRamFort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated pro-gram called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the partici-pant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Acad-emy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

aTTENTION! PET POOPs / YOU scOOP Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEasE NOTE - PETs ON LEashEs It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neigh-borhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BENd cOUNTY “LEash Law”Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law.

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make ev-ery effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATSThe primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also:• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

VACCINATIONRabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the
