BUCKET LIST GOALS

Mother of 12 pursues Master’s degree at the newly-launched TWU Richmond

BUCKET LIST GOALS

Page 5: Faith Today 2015 Trinity Western University Insert

My mother has been forever asking, ‘Are you ever going to go back to finish your degree?’” says Hyne-

Ju Huizenga (’15). Huizenga began pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1984 but soon, kids and work became priority.

The mom of 12—yes, 12 children—Huizenga kept replaying her mother’s words and decided to investigate Trinity Western. She knew that twu offered a Christian education for undergrads fresh out of high school, but wasn’t sure the University offered anything for adults. Fortunately, her search proved rewarding.

“I was so happy to discover that twu offered a degree completion program,” she says. The program’s six-week cohort system, and the fact that she could complete her degree in one night a week, appealed to her.

Trinity Western’s degree completion program offers students the opportunity to graduate with a ba in Leadership. For Huizenga, the idea of a degree in leadership was revolutionary. “I couldn’t believe how applicable it was to my personal life, my career, and my relationships,” says the 2015 graduate. “The instruction I’ve received here is like none other I’ve experienced.”

The confidence she gained with her ba in Leadership spurred her on to enroll in twu’s Master of Arts in Leadership program in

Richmond. Her flexible schedule as a restaurant manager allows her to pursue full-time studies. As well, the Vancouver resident benefits greatly from the shorter commute to twu Richmond. “The facility is beautiful. I really appreciate the face-to-face-instruction and the small class size,” says Huizenga.

twu Richmond was established for that very purpose, says Phillip Laird, Ph.D., twu Vice Provost. “It provides learners with an urban learning setting close to downtown Vancouver,” he says. “The Richmond site complements twu

Langley’s rural university context and provides an international, adult, and graduate learning environment to inspire the hearts and minds of future generations of learners.”

Completing her degree gave Huizenga an undeniable sense of fulfillment. “I think in life you have lots of loose ends, lots of loose threads,” she says. “twu, and the community here, helped me tie those up.”

HOW TWU CAN WORK FOR YOU

CREATING INCLUSIVE LEARNING COMMUNITIES

TWU launches Master of Arts in Educational Studies, Special Education

Page 9: Faith Today 2015 Trinity Western University Insert

Trinity Western University’s School of Education has launched a new graduate degree, the first of its kind: a

Master of Arts in Educational Studies, Special Education (maes-sped). A two-year, 35-credit program designed to develop the understanding and competence of educators in the k-12 system in dealing with exceptional and special-needs students, this new program is aimed at teachers already in the school systems who wish to increase their qualifications.

Developed by long-time twu Professor of Education Ken Pudlas, Ed.D., the maes-sped is based on a cohort model, in which students form a cooperative learning community. By sharing challenges and solutions, cohort members will enhance their own abilities to meet students’ diverse needs. “Our hope,” says Pudlas, “is that the program will bring together the confluence of head, heart, and hands into inclusive praxis.”

Students of the program are drawn to this unique approach and its emphasis on changing the lives of special needs children for the better. “I have a child with high-functioning autism myself,” says current maes-sped student Olivia Rhoddy, who teaches in the public school system. “Over the years I’ve worked with a great variety of special needs and after 16 years, I’ve reached a place in my career where I just want to make a difference.”

Although many of the courses offered in the program focus on caring for students’ diverse emotional, behavioural, and physical needs, there are also courses that explore their spiritual needs. These include a review of the literature that explains the differences a Christian world view might make in perceptions and education of

persons with disabilities or other unique learning challenges.

Trinity Western University was one of the first universities in Canada to make a special education course mandatory for its B.Ed. degree; in 1990, the School of Education did that and later added a second optional course, as well as a Special Education minor.

“Much of my teaching life has been with kids that have a hearing impairment, and I want to see them included,” Pudlas says. “Two basic elements of my philosophy are the critical confluence of head plus heart plus hands, as well as full inclusion. As inclusion is a biblical principle, I believe it should be nurtured by the premier Christian university in Canada.”

TRINITY WESTERN OFFERS SEVERAL GRADUATE PROGRAMS TO HELP YOU BETTER SERVE OTHERS:

• Counselling Psychology (MA): Become a professional counsellor with a vision to address human suffering and promote human flourishing.

• Nursing (MSN): Provide leadership locally, nationally, and globally to meet humanity’s most basic and pressing needs.

• Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL): Contribute to the educational world as a teacher, material developer, teacher-trainer, or administrator in English programs for both adults and youth in a variety of international and local contexts.

It used to be that if you had a good heart and common sense you could run a not-for-profit,” says R. Paul Goodyear (’09),

cfo of The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda. “But times have changed and not-for-profits are now subject to growing complexity, due to the legislative and regulatory framework in which they operate.”

Each year in Canada, The Salvation Army—Canada’s largest non-governmental provider of social services—serves over three million meals, provides 5650 beds for vulnerable individuals and families, and assists 1.3 million people with food, clothing, and practical aid. Goodyear, who has been with The Salvation Army for 28 years, is responsible for the reporting and accounting of $1.7 billion in assets and an operating budget of over $600 million.

In an effort to expand his own not-for-profit management skills, Goodyear completed twu’s mba in the Non-profit and Charitable Organization Management stream. “When I completed my undergraduate degree in 1986, not-for-profit organizations were barely given a mention,” he says. “The opportunity to study core mba subjects with a focus on the not-for-profit sector contributed immensely to my personal and professional development.”

twu is one of only two universities in Canada to offer an mba specialization in the

growing field of not-for-profit management, and the only Christian university to offer an mba of this nature.

“The non-profit organization has two customers: their client, whom they serve, and the donors and board of directors, from whom they seek contributions in various forms,” says Murray MacTavish, Ph.D., Director of Trinity Western University’s mba program. “It takes the smartest and best leaders to successfully lead a non-profit organization, as most non-profit organizations lack the resources typically available in for-profit companies.”

While Goodyear continues to work on the cutting-edge of management and accounting, the mission of not-for-profit organizations is what drives him. “The reason I go to work every day has less to do with the salary I earn than it does with the fulfilment of knowing that my work helps transform lives,” he says.

“I know that I’m contributing to something bigger than me,” Goodyear continues. “While I don’t get the opportunity to work on the front lines, I’m humbled in knowing that the work I do contributes to our organization’s ability to minister to people by meeting their needs and being Christ to them.”
