Holy Baptism – Dane Fox Ott

Apostles CreedP: Do you Believe in God, the Father?C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. P: Do you believe in Jesus, the Son of God? C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P: Do you believe in God, the Holy Spirit?C: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The ScripturesFirst Reading: Acts 1:1 – 11 In my former book I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem,

Page 2: Faith Lutheran Church in Valdersfaithlutheranchurchvalders.org/.../June_2_2019_bulletin.docx · Web viewC: We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done

but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:16 – 21 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Children’s Message

Gospel Acclamation p. 142Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Gospel: Luke 24:44 – 53 The Final Resurrection Appearance Jesus said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the

third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.P: The Gospel of our Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ.

Prayers of IntercessionPeople are asked to spontaneously speak aloud petitions that are marked with **P: Let us pray. Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic church. Fill it with truth and peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in anything it is amiss, reform it; where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in need, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

**Almighty God, lead your world from death to life, from falsehood to truth. Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust. Lead us from hate to love, from war to peace. May your love and peace fill the hearts of humanity. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

**God of all, with wonderful diversity of languages and cultures you created all people in your image. Guide all of humanity to be true caretakers of this beautiful world you have given us. Give us compassion for the less fortunate, that we would care as you have demonstrated your love for the world in Jesus, your Son. Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.
