AcademicCourseLevels     

TheacademicprogramofSt.MichaelCatholicHighSchoolseekstoprovidecourseworkwhich challengesstudentsfromabroadrangeoftalentsandareasofstrength.Asacollegepreparatory school,alllevelsaredesignedtopreparestudentsforcollege;thereisnoremedialtrack.Coursework isofferedatseverallevelsofchallenge:CollegiateStudies,HonorsandAdvancedPlacement(A.P.)   CollegiateStudies–Courseworkatthislevelrequiresavarietyofstudyskillsandlearninghabits. Independenceincompletingdailyassignments,accomplishingindividualprojectsandunderstanding themajorconceptsofcontentisexpected.Studentsmustdisplaysufficientmotivationtocomplete tasks.Competentperformanceateachlevelofthecriticalthinkinghierarchywillbestrengthenedin ordertoensurethatstudentsarewellpreparedtomeettheacademicdemandsofcollege.  Honors–Courseworkatthislevelrequiresthatstudentsdemonstrateahigherdegreeof self-directionandperformance.Theywillmanagemoreextensiveprojectsandreadingoutsideof class.Bothafasterpaceandfrequentdemandsforhigherlevelthinkingandproblemsolvingare expected.Studentswillbeexpectedtodemonstrategreaterknowledgeandanalyticalcriticisminall areasofassessment.Studentsreceive"+.5"gradebumpintheircumulativeweightedgradepoint average,suchthatan"A"=4.5.  AdvancedPlacement–WorkontheAdvancedPlacementleveliscomparabletocollegelevelwork. College-leveltextbooks,outsidereading,varioustypesofresearchprojectsandpresentations,aswell asrapidpacing,establishrigorousacademicdemands.Regulardemonstrationofhigher-level cognitiveskillsandwidercommandofthecontentmustbedemonstratedinallacademicactivities oftheclass.StudentsareinstructedinboththecontentandskillareasparticulartotheCollege BoardAPexaminationsforthecourse.SittingfortheNationalAPExaminationinMayisa requirementandwillcountasthesecondsemesterfinalexamforthatcourse.Studentsreceive"+1" gradebumpintheircumulativeweightedgradepointaverage,suchthatan"A"=5.0.

AdmissionPolicy  

Whenevaluatingapplicants,theadmissionsofficeseeksstudentswhohavetheprerequisiteskillsto succeedinacollegepreparatoryprogram,whichisdeterminedbyanassessmentofthestudent’s prioracademicrecord,aplacementtestandapersonalinterviewforthosestudentscomingtoSt. MichaelfromoutsidetheCatholicschoolsystem. 

WeanticipateadiversityofacademicaptitudesatSt.Michael,reflectiveofthediversityofBaldwin CountyCatholicfamilies.Becauseourfirstresponsibilityistoservethesefamilies,theyaregiven preferenceinadmissions,butwewelcomestudentsandfamiliesofallChristianfaiths,unitedaswe areinservicetothegospelofJesusChrist,aswellasthosefromotherreligioustraditions.  

Wealsoinvitetransfersofhighlycapablestudentsinto10thor11thgrade.Asageneralrule,wedo notacceptin-towntransfersintoSt.Michaelforastudent'ssenioryear.Ifachildstruggles academically,itisimportantthatheorsheappliestoSt.Michaelasafreshman,asthefreshmanyear programestablishesthefoundationforupperlevelsuccess.Therearenoremedialclassesortracks atSt.Michaeltohelpupperclassmenclosegapsintheirpreviouslearning,andforthatreasonthe admissionsstandardsforstudentsswitchingschoolsismorechallenging.  

Intheeventwereceivemoreapplicationsthanwehaveavailableopenings(aswedidforthe incomingfreshmanclassof2018),prioritiesforadmissionareasfollows: 

 

1. 8thgradersenrolledatChristtheKingSchool(Daphne),St.PatrickSchool(Robertsdale)orSt.Benedict (Elberta).ThesestudentsshouldapplybeforeChristmastheyearbeforetoclaimthisprioritystatus.  

2. ApplicantswhoseparentsarecontributingmembersofareaCatholicparishes;  3. ApplicantswitholdersiblingswhoarecurrentlyenrolledatSt.Michael;  4. Allotherapplicants,basedonthedateofapplication,availabilityofclasses,placementtest,academicrecord, 

andthejudgmentoftheadmissionsofficeastowhetherthestudentwillthriveinandcontributetotheschool.

COLLEGIATESTUDIESENGLISH11(11th)-1Credit(FullYear) CollegiateStudiesEnglish11exploresthemajorworksofBritishLiteraturefromitsbeginningsto the21stCenturyandbuildsonthecriticalthinking,reading,andwritingskillsintroducedin CollegiateEnglish10.Studentsreadfromavarietyofperiods,usingthehistoricalcontextsofthetexts tofosteradeeperunderstandingofthehumanconditionexploredbythewritersandtoequipstudentsto applythetimelesslessonsofBritishLiteraturetothecultureinwhichwelivetoday.Studentsrespondto thetextsindiscussionandwrittenformats.Bothformalandinformalwritingassignmentsare required.Additionally,studentsstudyvocabularyandgrammarandmechanicsofStandard AmericanEditedEnglish.    Prerequisite:CSEnglish10  ADVANCEDPLACEMENTLANGUAGEANDCOMPOSITION(11th)-1Credit(Full Year) TheoverarchinggoalsforAPLanguageandCompositionaretodevelopcriticalliteracyand facilitateinformedcitizenship.Thesegoalsarereached,primarily,throughexploringtherhetorical strategiesemployedbyothersinnon-fictiontexts,bothprintandvisual,andusingthosestrategies effectivelyinwriting.Tothisend,studentsreadawiderangeofnon-fictiontexts,including autobiographies,essays,speeches,politicaldocuments,advertisements,criticism,sciencewriting, politicalcartoons,etc.Studentslearntoanalyzethetexts,useresearchtoinquireintotheissues treatedbythem,synthesizevariousviewpointsontheissues,and,ultimately,developandarguefor theirownviewpoints.AllstudentsinthecoursemusttaketheAPexam.  Prerequisite:HonorsEnglish10  COLLEGIATESTUDIESENGLISH12(12th)-1Credit(FullYear) English12isacourseinadvancedcompositionandliterarystudies.Theframeworkisprovidedby theNortonAnthologyofWorldLiterature,whichcoverstheancientworldtothepresent.To structurethecourse,studentswillbeginwithasemesteronthefoundationsofWesternliterature andthemajorgenres(epic,tragedy,philosophy,andlyric).Inthesecondsemester,studentswill movetothemodernworldinthe18th,19th,and20thcenturies(withsomeselectionsfromthe21st. Studentswillreadliterature(intranslation)fromLatinAmerican,theOrient,Russia,Italy,Norway, andelsewhere. Prerequisite:English11  ADVANCEDPLACEMENTLANGUAGEANDLITERATURE(12th)-1Credit(Full Year) TheAPEnglishLiteratureandCompositioncourseisarigorous,college-levelcoursefocusedonthe analysisofliterarytextsandthewritingofclear,compelling,andsophisticatedessaysinresponse. TheaimistohaveeverystudentreadytotaketheAPLanguageandCompositionexaminMay (required).Studentsreadagreatmanytextsacrossarangeofgenresandperiodsandwriteand reviseuntilitissecondnature.AllstudentsinthecoursemusttaketheAPexam. Prerequisite:APLanguageandComposition

 ANALYTICALREADING(11th)-½Credit(1Semester) AnalyticalReadingisdesignedtohelpstudentsbecomeactive,critical,andefficientreaderswiththe ultimategoalofperformingtoone’shighestpotentialonstandardizedcollegeentranceexams. StudentswillhavetheopportunitytotakeandanalyzemultipleACTpracticetestsandtestexcerpts. Grammarandvocabularypracticespecifictothetestswillbecovered.Studentswilllearnspecialized andresearch-provennote-takingstrategiestoassisttheminoverallperformanceinothercourses. Furthermore,studentswillsetasideoneclassperweektoreadforpleasure,whichisshownto directlyrelatetostandardizedtestscores.   Prerequisite:None  CREATIVEWRITING(9th-12th)-1Credit(FullYear) Thiscoursewillgivestudentsachancetowriteinarangeofgenres.Themajorityofworkwillbe withpoetry,butthecoursewillalsocovershortfiction,aone-actplay,andcreativenonfiction. Classeswillbeamixof‘reverseengineering’poetryandprosetobetterunderstandthecraftandthe optionsavailabletoawriter,in-classwriting,andworkshopsdevotedtopeercritique. Prerequisite:None  GREATBOOKSSEMINAR(9th-12th)-½Credit(1Semester) TheGreatBooksSeminarwillfocusonaselectionofseminalliterarytextsintheWest,fromancient timestothe19thcentury.Wewillconsidergenreandthewayinwhichauthorstalktoeachother acrossthecenturiesinalivingtradition.Asaseminar,itwillbeacollaborativeendeavor,witha mixtureofbrieflecture,studentpresentations,responseessays,andvigorousdiscussion.  Prerequisite:None  INTERPERSONALCOMMUNICATIONS(10th-12th)-½credit(1Semester) Thepurposeofthiscourseistodelveintocommunication:howpeoplecommunicate,whyitis importanttocommunicateeffectively,andthemanydifferentwaysandmethodsmeaningisderived. Thiselectivewillfocusonafewmajorformsofcommunication:reading,writing,publicspeaking, andsigning(usingAmericanSignLanguage).Thesemester-longgoalwillbetohoneanddeepen communicationskills,andtodeveloplifelonghabitsofmoreeffectiveandmeaningful communicationinaworldinwhichlessandlessvaluesmeaningfulhumaninteractionand communicationinexchangeformereefficiency. Prerequisite:None  YEARBOOK(11th/12th)-1credit(FullYear) Thiscoursewilldevelopthephotography,design,journalismandmarketingskillsofstudentsinthe productionoftheschool’syearbook.Studentswillbeexpectedtocreate,develop,contributeand producethebookinconjunctionwiththeyearbookeditorsandteachersponsor. Prerequisite:PermissionofYearbookTeacher

STATISTICS(11thor12th)-1Credit(FullYear) Thiscourseisdesignedtoprovideabasicunderstandingofdescriptiveandinferentialstatistics. Topicsincludethemeasuresofcentraltendency,standarddeviation,combinationsand permutations,probability,sampling,andvariousdistributions.Emphasisisonapplicationsof statisticalconcepts. Prerequisite:AlgebraII.    INTRODUCTIONTOPERSONALFINANCE(11thor12th)-½Credit(1Semester) Businessandmanagementisarigorousandcriticalstudyofthewaysinwhichindividualsand groupsinteractinadynamicbusinessenvironment.Itisanacademicdisciplinethatexamineshow businessdecisionsaremadeandhowthesedecisionsmakeanimpactoninternalandexternal environments.Theidealsofinternationalcooperationandresponsiblecitizenshipareattheheartof businessandmanagement.Topicsinclude:checking,typesofcredit,insurance,investing,budgeting, careersandstockmarket. Prerequisite:None

ADVANCEDPLACEMENTSPANISH4(9th-12th) Thiscourseprovidesstudentswithopportunitiestodeveloplanguageproficiencyacrossthethree modesofcommunication:Interpretive,Interpersonal,andPresentational.Theywilllearnabout culturethroughtheuseofauthenticmaterialsthatarerepresentativeoftheSpanish-speakingworld. Thisisalanguageacquisitioncoursedesignedtoprovidestudentswiththenecessaryskillsand interculturalunderstandingtoenablethemtocommunicatesuccessfullyinanenvironmentwhere Spanishisspokenandassuch,isanimmersionexperiencerequiringexclusiveuseofSpanish. StudentsarerequiredtotaketheAPexam.Courseactivitiesfocusonthesixmajorthemesofthe APExam:FamiliesandCommunities,ScienceandTechnology,BeautyandAesthetics, ContemporaryLife,WorldChallenges,andPersonalandPublicIdentities.Studentswillberequired totaketheAPexaminMayofthecourseyear. Prerequisite:SuccessfulcompletionofSpanish3andAPteacherapproval  CONVERSATIONALSPANISH(11thor12th)-½credit(1Semester) Inthissemester-longcourse,studentswillbuildontheirbaseknowledgeoftheSpanishlanguage andgrowrootsdeeperintothespokenandwrittenaspectsofexpressingthemselvesinthetarget languageinboththepast,presentandfuture.Classeswilldevelopconversationsandpresentations astheyexploreeverydayskills,popularcultureanddebate-worthytopicsallinthetargetlanguage.  Prerequisite:SuccessfulcompletionofSpanishII.    COLLEGIATESTUDIESFRENCHI(9th-12th)-1credit(FullYear) ThiscourseprovidesaframeworkandanintroductiontotheFrenchlanguage.Alongsideastudyof theFrancophoneworld,studentswillbeabletospeak,read,write,andunderstandFrenchatabasic level.Studentswilllearnhowtospeakinthepresenttense,withanintroductiontospeakinginthe futureandpasttenses.Theywillexplorethevocabularyabouteverydayplaces,activities,andwill learnhowtocommunicatetheessentials.Theywillbeabletoanswerandasksimplequestions.  Prerequisite:None  COLLEGIATESTUDIESFRENCHII(9th-12th)-1credit(FullYear) ThiscoursedivesdeeperintotheFrenchLanguage,throughamorein-depthlookinto  language,syntax,andpronunciationofFrench.Thestudentswilllearnhowtocommunicateabout everydayactivities,createsimplewritingaboutthemselvesandtheworldaroundthem,and understandmorecomplexFrenchtexts.Thestudentswillbeabletospeakinpast,present,and futuretenses,aswellasformingquestions,commands,andworkingonspontaneousconversation. ThisclasswillexploremorecloselytheFrancophoneworld,andwillanalyzethecustomsand differencesofFrenchspeakingcountries.  Prerequisite:SuccessfulcompletionofFrenchI.

PERFORMINGANDVISUALARTSDEPARTMENT  CONCERT(BEGINNER)BAND(9th-12th)-1Credit(FullYear) BeginningConcertBandisdesignedforanystudentwithlittleornoexperienceandadesiretobe apartoftheSt.Michaelbandprogram.Studentswilllearnthefundamentalsoftheirchosen instrument.MusicTheorywillalsobecovered.Classactivitiesemphasizethedevelopmentof instrumenttechnique,toneproduction,tuning,musicreadingandlisteningskills. TheConcertBandisaperformancebasedclass.Thisensemblewillbecombinedwiththetop MiddleSchoolBandmembersandperformatallbandconcertsandlocalcompetitions.  Thestudentwillberesponsibleforprovidinghis/herowninstrumentor(ifavailable)useaschool ownedinstrument.    SYMPHONIC(ADVANCED)BAND(9th-12th)-1Credit(FullYear) TheSymphonicBandisanensemblecomprisedofthefinesthighschoolinstrumentalistatSt. Michael.TheSymphonicBandoffersstudentsgreatvarietyandchallengeinmusicalperformance, includingexperienceinsmallensemblemusic,analysisandtheory.Thisclassisdesignedfor studentswithmusicalabilitiesnecessarytoperformlevel3and4bandliterature.Bandmemberswill alsohavetheopportunitytoperformatfootball/basketballhomegames,parades,local,stateand nationalmusicfestivalsduringtheyear.Thestudentmustbeamemberofthebandtoparticipatein allbandactivities.Thestudentwillberesponsibleforprovidinghis/herowninstrumentor(if available)useaschoolownedinstrument.SymphonicBandmembersareencouragedtoaudition fortheAlabamaBandmastersAssociationAll-StateBands.MembersoftheSymphonicBandmake uptheJazzBandandothersmallensembles.TheJazzBandrehearseseveryThursdayafternoon.  Prerequisite:Approvalofthebanddirector.   CONCERTCHOIR(9th-12th)-1Credit(FullYear) TheSt.MichaelConcertChoirisopentoallstudentswhohavelittleornochoirexperience.This courseisdesignedtogivestudentsanopportunitytoexperiencethejoyofsingingtogetherandto provideanopportunityforindividualgrowthanddevelopmentthroughthechoirexperience.  Studentswilllearnavarietyofsongs,fromunisontotwo,andthreepartsingingwithanemphasis placedonvocalandchoraldevelopment.MusicTheoryandSightReadingconceptswillalsobe covered.Performancesarerequired.TheSt.MichaelChamberSingersareselectedfromtheConcert Choirbythedirector.ThisensembleisthecompetitivechoralensembleandrehearseseveryTuesday afternoon.TopchoralstudentsarealsoencouragedtoauditionfortheAlabamaVocalAssociation All-StateChoirs.  Prerequisite:None  STUDIOARTI(9th-12th)-1.0Credit(FullYear) TheStudioArtIcoursewillprovidestudentswiththeopportunitytolearnthefoundationsof creating2Dart.Majortopicsincludecomposition,shading,color,value,andperspective.Students willuseasketchbooktoexercisecreativethinkingandpracticetheirskillsoutsideofclass.Art Historywillbeinfusedthroughoutthecoursetodeepenstudentunderstandingoftheelementsof artandprinciplesofcomposition.Studentswillalsobegintolearnhowtoeffectivelycritiqueart.   Prerequisite:None

DRIVEREDUCATION(9thor10th)-NoCredit/IncludedinPE IncorporatedintotheFitnessTrainingorStrengthandConditioningcourse,thisoptionalcourseisa 2phasecourseconsistingofclassroominstructionandBehindTheWheel(BTW)instruction.The classroomphaseofthecourseconsistsofinstructioninsafedrivingtechniques,theeffectsof alcohol,drugs,andfatigueonsafedriving,vehiclemaintenanceandinsurance,aswellasmap reading.StudentswillalsoreceiveinstructioninBoatingBasicswiththeopportunitytoearna BoatingLicense.TheBehindTheWheelphaseofthecourseisthepracticalapplicationofthe course.ALearner'sLicenseisrequired.9thstudentsmustturn15byNovember1st.Studentsthat successfullycompletethecoursewillearntheir“BlueCard”whichqualifiesthatstudentfortheir driverslicense.   Prerequisite:None
