Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) has been very proud to produce three years of the Fairfield Amphitheatre Summer Concert Series (FASCS) from 2012 to 2014 and we thank the City of Yarra for its vision in supporting diversity and the arts within its municipality. Throughout the three year set, MAV has brought a fresh and exciting program to the City of Yarra that reflects our extensive connections to culturally and linguistically diverse artists and communities. We highly value this opportunity to uncover some extraordinary talent. I believe that the opportunity to share their artistic expression, including new collaborations and cultural traditions, is invaluable not just to the artists, but also to the City of Yarra and its diverse communities.

These concerts represent more than a fun afternoon of entertainment by the river. Importantly, they encourage greater cultural awareness, appreciation and participation in cultural activity in the city.It was a delight to once again, enjoy the series sitting beside the Mayor and I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank her for her support and enthusiasm.

We have enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership over several years and we look forward to developing this into the future.

Jill Morgan AMChief Executive Officer

My how time flies! It feels like yesterday that we were planning the first in the three-year series and now, with the Rats of Tobruk bagpipes, we ceremoniously marked the final concert over the last weekend of February 2014.

I have thoroughly enjoyed consulting with communities and offering opportunities to artists to perform and celebrate their heritage in this unique and special place. This year, we were confident enough in the momentum we had gained from previous years to program even more community based and emerging acts into the series. The result was very unique and meaningful to those that were able to celebrate their culture (e.g. Mauritians and Ethiopians) and also offered rare and beautiful insights for the audience.

We were lucky with the weather again in 2014 which was fabulous, and both locals and visitors from all walks of life and from diverse ages and cultures converged on the banks of the Yarra to enjoy the world of Melbourne

based multicultural artists. The cultural background of the weekly audience also reflected the theme of the respective weekly program, which tells us that we once again effectively tapped into key ethnic community networks.

The FASCS offered a platform for new collaborations (e.g. Indigenous MC Birds with established band the Black Jesus Experience), for celebration of heritage (e.g. Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipe band) and for contemporary expressions of folklore (e.g. Tango and Chilean dance troupes).

We are proud to have presented such a successful program over three years in the City of Yarra and we thank Council’s Arts & Culture Unit for their support and encouragement.

The Series is a great opportunity to showcase the City of Yarra as dynamic city and the curation of the Fairfield Concert summer series by an organisation like MAV addresses, in a real sense, the lack of representation of our many talented emerging CALD and Indigenous artists in the Melbourne mainstream.

SHORT TERMTo program a quality, engaging series of entertainment in the City of Yarra

To conduct safe and professional events that augment the natural beauty of Fairfield Park

To celebrate and promote the diversity of Yarra’s community and encourage greater awareness, appreciation and participation in cultural activityTo increase resident access and participation in arts and cultural activity for all ages

To welcome and entertain visitors from beyond the City of Yarra, including tourists.

LONG TERMTo promote the City of Yarra as a vibrant, artistic and unique municipality

To encourage harmonious relations within the City of Yarra’s communities and beyond

To increase appreciation of the benefits and strengths of cultural diversity

To create on-going economic opportunities and to maximise employment opportunities for CALD and Indigenous artists

To develop a sense of cultural pride especially amongst the young in indigenous and multicultural communities.

FEEDBACKI volunteered at the Mauritian event and it was a joy to contribute.  It was clear that the Mauritian community took the opportunity to come together and it was a very positive experience. I would definitely consider attending or volunteering again in future.

CHEERSBRENT

It was a pleasure to be asked to be MC at the last of the summer concerts at Fairfield.  The MAV staff were friendly and welcoming and pre-gig worksheets were excellent. The afternoon itself was a beautiful collection of community groups, it ran smoothly and was very well received by a large gallery.  The community obviously value these events. I would be very happy to be involved in any MCing duties that are available...any time!

STEVE MONTGOMERY, MC, CELTIC JIG

Hi Andrea

I provided some feedback to our internal Volunteer Program which I’m sure you received however form a volunteers perspective it was a very enjoyable experience. I’ve done quite a few of these days and this was easily one of the best and I’d thoroughly recommend MCAV day to other people.

Some personal feedback: I thought you connected well with myself as volunteer and were conscious of ensuring no one person was left doing any particular job too long which was really admirable. I also enjoyed the manner we were encouraged to get involved with the groups and work on a fairly antonymous level.

Best of luck with your upcoming events!

REGARDSBRETT

Thank you again for choosing us. The whole organisation, team and sound was excellent...everyone from different culture was enjoying it...continue with good job.....Ben from the Tropical Trio

SURVEY RESULTSKEY FINDINGS:

-This survey was conducted in the final week (Celtic theme) and this theme is reflected in the cultural make-up of the audience members. This was visually apparent in other weeks also. We are therefore drawing out key ethnic communities as well as diverse audiences with the programming.-This survey was conducted in the final week (Celtic theme) and this theme is reflected in the cultural make-up of the audience members. This was visually apparent in other weeks also. We are therefore drawing out key ethnic communities as well as diverse audiences with the programming.

-Most people in attendance are between 35-54 and many bring young family members/children.

-Two thirds of the audience are local residents within 5 kms of the amphitheatre yet almost half drive their car to the event.

-Half found out about the event through word of mouth while about 17% had been in previous weeks or years.

-One third of people bought something from the kiosk and the feedback on the food was positive.

-Overall, satisfaction levels were very high for all areas of the event planning and presentation.
